Juventus-Brescia

Football Italia

Juventus need a victory against troubled Brescia in order to stave off Milan's challenge for the leadership, but there are clearly problems in Turin.

Fabio Capello's side had made a strong defence the key to their success, but conceding six goals over their last three official games shows something has gone awry - especially when Gianfranco Zola is allowed to score a header in the final stages of their 1-1 draw at Cagliari.

Alessio Tacchinardi and Alessandro Birindelli are doubts for this game, while David Trezeguet could again squeeze Alessandro Del Piero out of the starting eleven.

Brescia are slipping towards the relegation zone and are now level on points with third-from-bottom Parma, so they'll be more than happy to sneak a point at the Delle Alpi. Andrea Caracciolo should partner Giuseppe Sculli, though Luigi Dipasquale is an option after scoring his first Serie A goal in the 1-1 draw with Fiorentina. Omar Milanetto and Marius Stankevicius will work hard to clog up spaces in midfield and prevent Juve running the show.

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet

Brescia (probable): Castellazzi; Martinez, Di Biagio, Adani; Stankevicius, Guana, Milanetto, Dallamano; Mannini, Sculli; Caracciolo

Capello expected Spanish switch

Football Italia

Fabio Capello has admitted his surprise at being called to boss Juventus this season, stating that he expected to end up in Spain. His departure from Roma in the summer shocked fans but also represented an unforeseen move for the man himself.

"I never thought the Old Lady would call me," stated the former Juventus player. "To be honest, I thought I'd go to a Spanish club."

Capello's decision to leave one of the Giallorossi's biggest rivals didn't go down well in Rome, but he dismisses the idea that he fled the capital.

"It wasn't a matter of running away. I've remained on good terms with the Sensi family," he added. "But there was something at Roma which stuck in my throat. In a Milan away tie last season, the fans displayed banners asking me to resign. I didn't think I deserved it."

The Coach, who has achieved major success with Real Madrid as well as Milan and Roma, now hopes to win more trophies in Turin.

"I've won everywhere and I'm counting on doing the same at Juventus," he continued. "People who win a lot of things are always despised, but that goes with the territory."

Davids set for shock return?

Football Italia

Juventus could be preparing an audacious move to bring Edgar Davids back to the Delle Alpi. Director general Luciano Moggi has made it clear that the Bianconeri are searching for a quality midfielder to play alongside Emerson.

The Dutch international is believed to be No 1 on his list despite looking out of sorts since his move to Inter this summer. Boss Fabio Capello is a known admirer of the combative ace, trying to sign him for old club Roma on more than one occasion.

Davids left Juventus last summer on a free transfer after spending the last six months of his Turin contract on loan at Barcelona. Should Inter reject Juventus' approach, the Bianconeri could make enquiries about another Inter player who Capello knows from his Roma days, Cristiano Zanetti.

However, the main stumbling block over either proposed move seems to be the poor relations between the two Serie A giants.

Meanwhile, Juve's attempts to sign Javier Mascherano from River Plate also seem to have run into trouble. According to some sources, the talented 20-year-old has already reached an agreement with Corinthians, but is likely to stay in Buenos Aires until the summer in any case.

Juventus chief Moggi: Market activity over for us

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has ruled out anymore transfer activity this month.

"Juventus has released Iuliano and Legrottaglie and with these operations our market work is closed," said Moggi. "We're first on the table, with one of the best attacks and the better defence in the championship - which has been achieved practically without David Trezeguet all season.

"In fact, David will reinforce us - for the rest there will be no sales or acquisitions."

Juventus to land Behrami as Montero lined up by Genoa

Tribal Football

Genoa president Enrico Preziosi is said to have struck an agreement with Juventus for an end-of-season deal for Swiss youngster Valon Behrami. The 19 year-old has been outstanding on-loan at Verona in the Serie B this season and his form has attracted the interest of Tottenham and Liverpool.

However, its understood Preziosi has agreed to sell Behrami to Juve in part exchange for veteran defender Paolo Montero. The Uruguayan was set to join Genoa this month, but the departures of Nicola Legrottaglie (Bologna) and Mark Iuliano (Mallorca) saw coach Fabio Capello block his exit.

Despite the setback, Preziosi has agreed to give Juve first refusal on Behrami when the summer market opens in June.

Del Piero offered Palermo path

Football Italia

Ambitious Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini is reportedly chasing Juventus idol Alessandro Del Piero. The Rosaneri chief has long admired the Turin talisman, who has recently been relegated to the bench following David Trezeguet's return from injury.

A number of clubs have tried to tempt the Italian international away from Turin before but none have succeeded. However, an exit could be on the horizon given that Del Piero's place in the starting line-up has never been more in doubt.

Meanwhile, another Bianconeri player could be heading for La Liga after Mark Iuliano joined Majorca this week. Midfielder Stephen Appiah is being touted as an exchange player in a possible deal for Pablo Ibanez, Atletico Madrid's 23-year-old centre-half.

The Old Lady also offloaded defender Nicola Legrottaglie to Bologna on Tuesday, which may pave the way for the arrival of Bayer Leverkusen full-back Diego Placente.

Bologna signing Legrottaglie: I want to put Juventus behind me

Tribal Football

Bologna signing Nicola Legrottaglie admits he wants to put the past 18 months at Juventus behind him. The defender, who joined Bologna on Monday, said: "I have a big ambition to redeem myself and to be playing regularly again.

"That's why I came here. I had many critics in Turin, but I never had the chance to answer them because I wasn't playing. When my agent told me Bologna was interested, I didn't have to think about it.

"Now I just want to get match-fit and leave the selection up to the coach. I know the defence has been doing well, but I am confident I can make it even stronger."

Chelsea, Real Madrid rival AC Milan for Gilardino

Tribal Football

Parma are ready to hold talks with representatives from Chelsea and Real Madrid over the future of striker Alberto Gilardino. While AC Milan remain favourites to land the Italy international in the summer, Chelsea and Real are also in the frame as Parma prepare to cash in on their young star in the summer.

With Hernan Crespo on his way to AC Milan, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will have officials register his interest in Gilardino in the coming weeks. While Real GM Arrigo Sacchi also plans to return to his old club to ask for the youngster.

Depor approach AC Milan for Coloccini

Tribal Football

Deportivo La Coruna have approached AC Milan for defender Fabricio Coloccini. Depor coach Javier Irureta wants to take the Argentine on-loan and hopes to use him both in defence and as a midfield anchor. Coloccini has played for Villarreal and Atletico Madrid in Spain, but has struggled to win a first team place on his return to Milan this season.

Serie A dominates UEFA side

Football Italia

Half of the players in UEFA's ideal squad for 2004 ply their trade in Serie A, including two Italian internationals. The first-choice XI was voted for by visitors to the UEFA.com website and five members of the side can be found in the Peninsula.

Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and Milan defender Alessandro Nesta are the only Azzurri players, but there are a further three Serie A stars. They are Rossoneri fullback Marcos Cafu, who has had a career renaissance since moving to the San Siro, and his teammate Andriy Shevchenko.

The Ballon d'Or winner is joined by last year's European Player of the Year, Pavel Nedved of Juventus and the Czech Republic. The other members of the ideal eleven include four Premiership players, Maniche representing Porto and Barcelona's Ronaldinho.

As for the Italy squad itself, it remains tenth in the FIFA World Rankings with 738 points. Brazil are again the leaders ahead of France, Argentina, the Czech Republic, Spain, Holland, Mexico, England and Portugal.

Livorno solve Mutu loophole

Football Italia

Adrian Mutu has been registered with Livorno to bypass the limits set on non-EC players and Chelsea are owed nothing, explained Juve's transfer guru Luciano Moggi.

"Livorno have signed Mutu and will turn him over to us as soon as the international transfer comes through," said Juventus director general Luciano Moggi in today's press conference.

New regulations state that a Serie A club cannot sign a fifth non-EC player unless he was already plying his trade in Italy that season. Livorno have not reached their quota yet, so they were able to register Mutu and will then sell him on to Juventus.

"In any case, Mutu will play with us for the next five years. We don't owe Chelsea anything, as it is an issue between the English club and the player. We have a very precise agreement with him."

The Bianconeri had long been associated with Mutu and had been close to completing the move in the summer before his cocaine scandal broke.

"Mutu is a world class player and we had been tracking him from his time at Verona," continued Moggi. "At the time his price-tag was too high. This summer the negotiations were at an advanced stage before Roman Abramovich changed his mind on a loan deal at the last minute, but this chance came and we took it. Now our transfer campaign has closed."

Livorno also noted the procedure was far from an unusual one for Serie A sides.

"Our President simply decided to do Juve a favour," revealed director Elio Signorelli. "It is possible we will receive some players in exchange, but we haven't discussed it yet."

The Romanian was a free agent after he was fired from Chelsea for failing a drugs test, but was unable to register for the Bianconeri and today's planned press conference was cancelled due to "bureaucratic problems."

"This is hardly a crazy manoeuvre," said agent Claudio Pasqualin. "It is a perfectly normal procedure that does not violate any existing rules. Livorno will receive a player in exchange and nothing more."

It's already reported that the Amaranto will be handed promising youngster David Chiumiento, currently on loan at Siena, at the end of the season. The impasse with Chelsea is still far from resolved, however, as the Stamford Bridge side is looking for compensation for breach of contract.

"The London club has certainly been left out of pocket by this whole incident," added Pasqualin. "I expect a long and difficult legal battle between Chelsea and Mutu."

Juventus chief: Mutu won't go to Roma

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has dismissed reports suggesting new signing Adrian Mutu will be offered to AS Roma. Its claimed Mutu could be sent to Roma in exchange for one of Antonio Cassano or Francesco Totti, two players high on Moggi's wanted list.

But the Juve chief insisted yesterday: "Adrian Mutu has come to us in order to stay and we have taken him in order to play him. Moreover, I have the feeling that Totti and Cassano will remain with Roma next season."

Juventus chief: Tudor is staying

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi insists defender Igor Tudor will now remain with the Turin giants. Having sent Nicola Legrottaglie on-loan to Bologna and released Mark Iuliano to Real Mallorca, Moggi has decided that Croatia international Tudor will not be following his ex-defensive teammates out the exit door.

"Tudor? He stays. We are pleased that two players who asked to leave are now finding space at other clubs, but we cannot allow another defender to leave us," said Moggi. West Brom and Newcastle United in England have been chasing the experienced defender.

Juventus prepare bumper offer for Rangers target Nonda

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi will speak with the representatives of AS Monaco striker Shabani Nonda on Monday. The Congolese ace is off contract in the summer and his agent is currently in Glasgow speaking with Rangers about a possible Bosman move at the end of this season.

However, Moggi is expecting to also hold talks with Nonda's representatives next week and will offer the Monaco forward a three-year contract worth £1 million-a-season. Nonda is said to be angling for a long-term, five-year deal.

Atletico Madrid president: No Juventus move for Ibanez

Tribal Football

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo insists defender Pablo Ibanez will not be sold this month. Juventus have made contact with the youngster's representatives and are aware he can be signed for an affordable £8 million. Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal have also been linked with the Spanish prospect this season.

But Cerezo said: "Pablo has his contract and contracts are there to be followed. Another thing is that it is possible to be improved, but these are details we will consider later."

Atletico Madrid approach Juventus for Appiah

Tribal Football

Atletico Madrid have approached Juventus for midfielder Stephen Appiah. Juve coach Fabio Capello has given the green light for the Ghana international to be released on-loan as it will free up a non-EU spot in his squad. Appiah has failed to convince Capello of his long-term value at Juve and the youngster could join Atletico on-loan in exchange for first refusal on young defender Pablo Ibanez.

Juve consider Miccoli sale

Football Italia

Fiorentina could be a step closer to buying on-loan striker Fabrizio Miccoli from Juventus as the Bianconeri bid for Javier Mascherano. Juve chief officer Antonio Giraudo and Viola President Diego Della Valle yesterday denied talking business when they met in Milan for a League summit.

However, with three players currently in co-ownership between the two sides, they must resolve the future of Miccoli, Enzo Maresca and Giorgio Chiellini.

Chiellini seems destined to play for Juventus next season, after Fabio Capello insisted that the international defender was in his plans. But the Viola could obtain the services of Maresca for £3.5m and Miccoli for £5m.

Miccoli has already said that he would be delighted to sign for Fiorentina, but the price tag may be a bit steep for Della Valle. In that case, another year of co-ownership could be on the cards.

Fiorentina have reportedly completed the signing of Dario Dainelli, buying out the remaining 50 per cent of his contract from Brescia for £1.4m.

Elsewhere, Juve have also entered into the running for River Plate's Javier Mascherano. The Argentine midfielder is already being chased by Chelsea and Inter, but the Bianconeri have an ace up their sleeve. Juve still own Marcelo Salas, who is currently at River Plate, and could strike an exchange deal for the two players.

Gilardino future in balance

Football Italia

Parma admit Alberto Gilardino's future will be decided by the shareholders, while Fabio Vignaroli joins the Tardini side. Gialloblu director Luca Baraldi has denied strong reports that Milan have first refusal on Alberto Gilardino.

The 22-year-old striker has already said that he will not leave during the January transfer window, but discussions could reopen on his future in the summer.

"Gilardino is a Parma player and the club haven't had talks with him regarding other clubs," insisted Baraldi.

But he confirmed the matter was out of his hands. "What happens in June depends on the shareholders. I can only suggest things. Personally, I would never sell Gilardino."

It's likely the Italian international - who has already scored nine Serie A goals this term - will move on at the end of the season with Milan, Real Madrid, Juventus and Roma already showing interest.

Baggio plays tsunami benefit

Football Italia

Roberto Baggio has come out of retirement for a Tsunami benefit side captained by Andriy Shevchenko. FIFA have announced that World Player of the Year Ronaldinho and Ballon d'Or winner Shevchenko are amongst 52 world-class footballers who will participate in the charity game next month in aid of the Indian Ocean victims.

The 'Football for Hope' match will take place at Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium on February 15 at 8pm GMT. The Brazilian midfielder and the Ukrainian international will each captain two star-studded sides, which include Brazil's Ronaldo, England's David Beckham, and Italy's Francesco Totti.

Italy Coach Marcello Lippi and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will train the Shevchenko XI, whilst Ronaldinho's side will be Coached by Brazil tactician Carlos Alberto Parreira and Barcelona's Frank Rijkaard.

Inter player Adriano will also feature, with Milan sending Kaka, Paolo Maldini, and Jaap Stam to play alongside Shevchenko. Even Italian legend Roberto Baggio is expected to come out of retirement for this very special event.

UEFA President Lennart Johansson noted, "We hope that the message of hope disseminated by the world of sport will help to alleviate the terrible suffering."

Team captains Ronaldinho and Shevchenko also released a statement, offering their sympathies to those affected by the tsunami.

Zola counsels Del Piero

Football Italia

Gianfranco Zola has given Alessandro Del Piero advice on getting his career back on track while the Juve man reacts to his critics. The Bianconeri captain was sensationally dropped from the starting line-up for the 1-1 draw at Cagliari on Sunday evening, fuelling reports he'll join a Japanese club at the end of this season.

"After the match I spoke to Ale for a long time as we are good friends," revealed Sardinian goalscorer Zola. "I just told him to relax and forget that he is Del Piero, because now he's got to start all over again. Every player has gone through tough periods like this, so I reminded him of my own problems and how I came out of them stronger than ever."

Zola was pushed out of the Parma squad by then-Coach Carlo Ancelotti, but found solace and a new career path in the Premiership with Chelsea. Del Piero could also be forced to go overseas in order to find a club that will pay his wages and Japan seems to be the most likely option right now after he was repeatedly substituted by Coach Fabio Capello.

"Of course he isn't happy about the current situation," continued Zola, "but he can come out of this a better player. The only cure is to look ahead and react to it, and Del Piero has the qualities to do that. He has a fight ahead of him, but I am convinced he can make it."

The Italian international did not comment on the issue on his official website, but did pledge to get Juventus back on track.

"Our lead has been cut to two points as we reach the halfway stage," he explained, "and it was a little disappointing to see Cagliari snatch our victory away at the last minute. Like swimmers, we get an extra push off the wall midway through a race and we won't let our opponents make up any more ground."

Juventus coach Capello warns Del Piero

Tribal Football

Juventus coach Fabio Capello has warned Alessandro del Piero that his team won't carry passengers this season. Del Piero is struggling to hold onto his first team place and Capello admitted: "We will help Del Piero in the best way, like against Cagliari where he had the opportunity to make beautiful things.

"I am convinced that he remains important for our future, but I cannot allow his form and his state of mind to dominate my thinking. I make the formation in order to take home the three points, not to give sympathy to individuals."

Buffon still the best

Football Italia

Gianluigi Buffon has been named the World's Best Goalkeeper for the second year running with Milan's Dida in third place. The Italy and Juventus shot-stopper was handed the accolade by the German-based International Federation for Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

"It's wonderfully satisfying, especially as it is the second consecutive year in which I have topped this prestigious list," said the player who turns 27 years of age at the end of this month.

"When it comes to these statistical analyses, it is important to maintain a certain level of consistency over the whole year and that means you have found your balance."

Buffon earned 185 points, putting him in front of Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech with 125 and Milan hero Dida on 78. The next highest placed Italian was Inter's Francesco Toldo in 16th place.

"I think this is a very valuable achievement, as the best goalkeepers in the world are lined up here," added the former Parma star.

"I am particularly happy to see Cech in the runner-up slot, as he is perhaps not as well known as many others, but he is certainly among the best. Let us also not forget Dida's remarkable class."

1. Gianluigi Buffon, Juventus/Italy, 185pts

2. Petr Cech, Chelsea/Czech Republic, 125pts

3. Dida, Milan/Brazil, 78pts

4. Iker Casillas, Real Madrid/Spain, 75pts

5. Andonios Nikopolidis, Olympiakos/Greece, 64pts

6. Oliver Kahn, Bayern Munich/Germany, 39pts

7. Roberto Carlos Abbondanzieri, Boca Juniors/Argentina, 31pts

8. Vitor Manuel Martins Baia, Porto/Portugal, 29pts

9. Juan Carlos Henao, Once Caldas/Colombia, 29pts

10. Jose Santiago Canizares, Valencia/Spain, 23pts

Legrottaglie joins Bologna

Football Italia

Nicola Legrottaglie's Juventus nightmare is over after he joined Bologna for the rest of the season. The central defender has flopped at the Delle Alpi since his move from Chievo in the summer of 2003.

But now the Rossoblu, and boss Carlo Mazzone in particular, have offered him the chance to prove his doubters wrong. The 28-year-old, who has also played for Bari, Pistoiese, Prato, Reggiana and Modena, has signed on loan until June.

Legrottaglie, who was tipped to have a decent international career, has spent much of this season on the bench. He's been relegated to the stands as boss Fabio Capello prefers the partnership of Lilian Thuram and Fabio Cannavaro.

Meanwhile, Juventus have announced that the unveiling of new signing Adriano Mutu has been delayed due to bureaucratic problems. The club was due to present their new striker to the media tomorrow, but instead a press conference will be held to explain the status of the Romanian's switch.

Messina's Parisi prefers Juventus over Inter Milan

Tribal Football

Messina winger Alessandro Parisi admits he is watching with interest the speculation linking him with a big move away.

"There's been a lot of talk about me," said Parisi, "and this increases my expectations, but it is important to be calm. There is no option for Juventus or the interest of Inter, it is only talk and there is nothing concrete. I continue on my road that is the one of Messina."

He added: "If something arrives I will consider it. Inter or Juventus? I would have to choose Juve. I am a lifelong fan."

Inter Milan beat Chelsea for Brazilian whiz Ederson

Tribal Football

Internacional midfield ace Ederson is being chased by Inter Milan. The 18 year-old has been likened to AC Milan star Kaka and is set to join Nice in France this month.

But his agent, Antonio Caliendo, revealed: "Inter has an option on Ederson. This year he will play with Nice, but this will be a season of acclimatization in European football, then Inter will be able to take advantage of his newly gained experience in order to carry him to Milan."

Inter have trumped Chelsea for the teenager, who was recommended to the Premiership giants' owner Roman Abramovich by former Brazil captain Dunga.

Juve target Spanish stopper

Football Italia

Juventus are ready to strike on the transfer market after conceding seven goals in their last seven games. Luciano Moggi is reportedly chasing Atletico Madrid stopper Pablo Ibanez, 23, to rejuvenate an ageing defence.

Although the Turin giants already have a number of world class defenders, Fabio Cannavaro and Lilian Thuram are over 30, while veteran reserves Paolo Montero and Ciro Ferrara are approaching the end of their careers.

Ibanez, a central defender whose current deal expires in 2008, is an £8.5m target for the Italians who are ready to offer him £1.5m a season. It is thought that Moggi was originally pursuing Barcelona stopper Carles Puyol but the Spanish club put the brakes on the deal.

Juventus could be targeting Ibanez given that Mark Iuliano has recently joined Majorca, while Igor Tudor and Nicola Legrottaglie could soon follow him out of the exit.

The Old Lady could do with a few more options as Gianluigi Buffon and Cannavaro have played every League match so far, with Gianluca Zambrotta and Thuram missing just one game.

Juventus offer double-your-money deal to Atletico Madrid's Ibanez

Tribal Football

Juventus are pressing Atletico Madrid for fullback Pablo Ibanez. The youngster has enjoyed an outstanding first six months at the Vicente Calderon and has a buyout clause of £8 million.

Juve coach Fabio Capello has urged his director general, Luciano Moggi, to bring Ibanez to Turin next season and the Italian giants have already made contact with the defender's representatives offering a double-your-money contract worth almost £1.5 million-a-year.

Ibanez's current Atletico deal runs to 2008 and club chiefs have already intimated they are keen to secure him to an improved contract.

Juventus chief asks Benfica about Miguel

Tribal Football

Juventus are in talks with Benfica over attacking right-back Miguel. The Portugal international has been a long-term target for Juve director general Luciano Moggi, who fancies the 25 year-old as a better solution at right-back than Jonathan Zebina.

Moggi took advantage of an approach from Benfica over the weekend for Igor Tudor to discuss Miguel's availability. Benfica's Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni wants to bring Tudor to Portugal as a replacement for Luisao, who is interesting several European heavyweights, including Tottenham and Deportivo La Coruna.

Miguel accepts he is likely to be sold in the summer and on Juve admitted: "I know about their interest, they almost signed me after the Euros but Juventus couldn't get a deal together."

Mutu snubbed mega AC Milan offer for Juventus deal

Tribal Football

Adrian Mutu rejected a bigger offer from AC Milan to sign for Juventus last week. The former Chelsea striker was offered a massive £2.2 million-a-year by Milan as the scramble for his signature heated up over Christmas. But Juve, where his agent, Alessandro Moggi, is the son of director general Luciano, won the race by securing Mutu to a five-year deal worth £1.4 million-a-season.

Juventus give up on Siena's Taddei

Tribal Football

Juventus have given up on trying to persuade Siena midfielder Rodrigo Taddei to join them this month. Juve director general Luciano Moggi has been in talks with Siena president Paolo De Luca for over two months about the Brazilian's situation. But Taddei has refused to budge, despite Juve being prepared to match De Luca's asking price.

Taddei wants a move to AS Roma, though the deal is unlikely to be secured until June when he comes off contract.

Juventus to continue sell-off with Birindelli, Montero

Tribal Football

Juventus are continuing their mini clearout this week. After Mark Iuliano's move to Real Mallorca, Nicola Legrottaglie signed to the end of the season on-loan with Bologna yesterday. Veteran defender Paolo Montero is next out the door, with Serie B Genoa set to snap up the Uruguayan. While midfielder Antonio Birindelli will join Siena on-loan.

Miccoli snubs Juve return

Football Italia

Fiorentina striker Fabrizio Miccoli doesn't want to go back to Juventus at the end of the season. The player, currently on loan from the Bianconeri, was told he was surplus to requirements in Turin by Fabio Capello in the summer.

But Miccoli hasn't looked back since moving to the Viola and has now pledged his future to the outfit. "I want to stay in Florence, this is the right place for me," he said. "The squad is in a state of continual evolution and the owners are very ambitious.

"I settled in almost straight away when I arrived. It's a beautiful city and the fans are warm and passionate. Basically there are all the ingredients here for success." Juve turned their back on Miccoli after keeping faith with Alessandro Del Piero and given the acquisition of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Atletico Madrid's Torres prefers Italy over Premiership

Tribal Football

Atletico Madrid skipper Fernando Torres has admitted he'd prefer a move to Serie A over the Premiership if he must leave the Vicente Calderon. Manchester United and Chelsea have both had bids for the ace striker rejected over the last six months, while Jose Reyes urged Arsenal to go for Torres last week.

However, AC Milan are the new favourites for Torres after he admitted: "I know that in England there are important teams that are following me. If it depended on me, I would prefer to come to play in Italy, the Italian championship gives me more inspiration than the Premier League."

Cagliari 1 - 1 Juventus

Football Italia

David Trezeguet returned to the Juve side, but Gianfranco Zola's late header cuts their Serie A lead to just two points.

Juventus needed a victory at the Stadio Sant'Elia to maintain their four-point lead over Milan, but only the Rossoneri have conquered Cagliari on their home turf this season. David Trezeguet returned to the starting line-up for the first time since undergoing shoulder surgery in October, pushing Alessandro Del Piero on to the bench. Cagliari surprisingly brought David Suazo in to replace on-form Antonio Langella.

The home side had a strong start and Mauro Esposito's floated cross left Gianluigi Buffon stranded, but Lilian Thuram cleared from Suazo at the back post. Juve surged forward at the other end and Zlatan Ibrahimovic set up Trezeguet only for his first touch to let him down in a promising position.

Diego Lopez drilled wide at the end of a good team move, then Esposito's shot was charged down and Suazo's follow-up smothered by Buffon. Iezzo got down well to pluck Emerson's ambitious half-volley out of the bottom corner, then Maltagliati did just enough to put Trezeguet off from six yards after he had controlled beautifully with his chest.

Cagliari continued to trouble the Juve defence and Buffon rushed out to punch away Zola's dangerous free kick. There was panic in the Sardinian box on the stroke of half-time when Pavel Nedved's wayward cross was palmed out of the top corner. From the resulting set-piece Iezzo again did well to capture a header from the Czech international.

At the start of the second half Iezzo needed two touches to get Nedved's piledriver under control, but Juventus eventually broke the deadlock after 55 minutes. Nedved was again involved, as he combined with Trezeguet and lifted a cross in for Emerson's header to enter off the underside of the crossbar. Cagliari were furious as Trezeguet was offside when he took part in the move, but the goal was validated.

Zola nearly took the Bianconeri defence by surprise, but Emerson got back to clear at the last moment. Antonio Langella was surprisingly left on the bench, but he was given a standing ovation by the home crowd when he replaced the disappointing Suazo.

Manuele Blasi was booked for a cynical foul to stop Zola running away on a promising counter-attack. Alessandro Del Piero finally stepped on to the field for the final 15 minutes, giving Trezeguet a rest on his Serie A comeback. He had a good chance after some good build-up play from Mauro Camoranesi, but his curling shot was off target.

Langella proved an inspired substitution as he had Cagliari's best chance of the second half with one of his trademark marauding runs, but Buffon intelligently pushed his shot away from goal and the incoming Esposito. Langella again tested Buffon when he sprung the offside trap and this time the World's best goalkeeper rushed off his line to narrow the angle and block the shot with his legs.

The pressure was growing and Stephen Appiah lost the ball in midfield, so Brambilla floated in a cross for Gianfranco Zola to jump in front of Jonathan Zebina and score a great header. It's a rare finish for the little Sardinian, but he timed it perfectly.

Cagliari: Iezzo; Lopez, Maltagliati, Bega, Agostini; Abeijon (Conti 73), Brambilla, Gobbi; Esposito, Zola, Suazo (Langella 65)

Juventus: Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi (Appiah 74), Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Trezeguet (Del Piero 74)

Capello's comment

Juventus.com

Fabio Capello comments on the draw in Cagliari: "We were in full control of the game, we were easily managing the result, when we conceded a quite avoidable goal, that's a pity. Between today's and Parma's match we gave four points away, two due to a lump of earth, the two of today occured in a situation where we were holding the ball and we managed it badly.

"It's a pity we gave points away just when we were in control of the game, we played well, we're in a good shape and we've regained the right determination and balance.

"Cagliari has the merit of not having given up. We had the chance to close the match, two occasions to to turn the defence into attack and have two players score but did not make it; they had a fine occasion with Langella but Buffon was extraordinary."

He's asked about Trezeguet's return: "David is not at one hundred per cent, that's why I substituted him. He had the chance to score but did not make it. He's a very good player, when he's on the pitch opponents fear him."

Capello welcomes Mutu

Football Italia

Fabio Capello has David Trezeguet back in the Juve squad for their trip to Cagliari and comments on new arrival Adrian Mutu.

"Trezeguet did very well in his comeback against Atalanta," explained the Coach, "and above all he didn't show any fear when clashing with opponents. Psychologically that can often be the worst part of returning from such a delicate operation, but I'll have to decide whether or not he starts."

The Frenchman has been out of action since early October following shoulder surgery and now represents a real threat to off-form Alessandro Del Piero.

"Trezeguet's return is very important for us, because he gives depth to the squad and lives to score goals. Every team needs someone like that in the penalty area."

The Bianconeri have stuttered of late and conceded five goals in their last two games, including the Coppa Italia exit to Atalanta. These could be key issues when taking on attack-minded Cagliari on their home turf.

"Our confidence is high and we are going to the Stadio Sant'Elia to get a positive result," assured Capello. "We must be very careful not to leave space for Cagliari to run at us, because that is when they are at their most dangerous with the fastest forwards in Serie A. Usually it's one particular striker you have to look out for, but in this case it's three."

Antonio Langella and Italian international Mauro Esposito have been revelations since their promotion from Serie B, while Gianfranco Zola has lost none of his class. Juve were further troubled when they were forced to delay the flight to Sardinia because of fog, eventually leaving Cuneo airport at 8.30pm last night.

Juventus have also been hitting the headlines for off the field news this week, such as the shock signing of banned ex-Chelsea star Adrian Mutu.

"He is fast, already knows the Serie A style and has the characteristics I look for in a player," said the tactician. "During his time at Parma he proved what a world class player he is, scoring goals, creating them and putting in some great set-pieces.

"I am happy with his arrival, especially as he was signed on a free transfer, but above all Mutu is a player who deserves to wear the Juve shirt."

The Bianconeri are keeping tight-lipped on British reports that Chelsea want compensation for Mutu's move, but Capello was drawn on the growing dissent of Roma men Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano.

"Totti is a world class player who everyone would be happy to welcome into their team, and the same goes for Cassano. Right now let us concentrate on Mutu, Trezeguet and all the others, as Juventus are more than competitive as they are."

Mazzone wins over Legrottaglie

Football Italia

Juve flop Nicola Legrottaglie has confirmed his move to Bologna is entirely down to Coach Carlo Mazzone.

"I want to play football again," said the defender who is yet to make a single Serie A appearance this season."I have to feel that I am useful to a team once more. For that reason, Bologna becomes an important stage of my career, especially as Carlo Mazzone is there."

Mazzone has made a name for himself by resuscitating the careers of players other clubs had cast aside, such as Beppe Signori and Roberto Baggio. He now welcomes Legrottaglie, who had pushed his way into the Italy squad during his time at Chievo, but has barely made an impact since completing his move to Juventus in 2003.

There were offers from Premiership sides, including West Bromwich Albion, but he opted for the Rossoblu for a very specific reason.

"If I am moving to the Stadio Dall'Ara," revealed the Bari-born defender, "it is above all so that I can work with a legend of the game like Mazzone."

Juventus are cutting down their defence with Mark Iuliano moving to Real Majorca and Igor Tudor also on the transfer list, fuelling reports they are set to make a big money bid.

Director General Luciano Moggi is already looking ahead to next season and it's reported that they will snap up Monaco striker Shabani Nonda on a free transfer in the summer so that he can be offered to Roma in exchange for versatile defender Cristian Chivu.

Genoa supremo reveals Juventus interest in Behrami

Tribal Football

Genoa president Enrico Preziosi has hinted at Juventus' interest in star striker Valon Behrami. The Swiss superkid is on-loan at Verona, where his registration is co-owned with Genoa, and has attracted serious interest from Tottenham and Fulham.

"Behrami is wanted by many clubs," said Preziosi, "But without a call from Turin I will not move."

No Barcelona return for Argies Saviola, Riquelme

Tribal Football

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has ruled out welcoming back Argentine pair Javier Saviola and Juan Roman Riquelme next season. Saviola is on-loan at AS Monaco, while Riquelme is coming to the end of a two-year loan with Villarreal, but neither player is wanted by coach Rijkaard, says DiarioSport.

Riquelme still has two years left on his Barca contract and is wanted by Villarreal on a permanent deal at the end of this season. Barca will also encourage Monaco to take Saviola on-loan for another season.

Cagliari v Juventus: Preview

ESPN Soccernet

Juventus striker David Trezeguet is poised to make his first start in Serie A for three months against Cagliari on Sunday. The France star has not featured in the team since October after undergoing shoulder surgery, but made a goalscoring return to the side when he netted in the midweek Coppa Italia tie against Atalanta in a pulsating 3-3 draw.

Despite the marksmanship of the Frenchman, the Italian league leaders crashed out of the competition, having lost the first leg 2-0.

"We could have qualified for the next stage of the competition three times during that game, but we also made three mistakes," lamented Juve coach Fabio Capello. "It's a pity, because we scored three goals, we caused our own downfall.

"However I must underline Trezeguet's performance - he seems to have completely recovered. He ran well, played hard and scored, and I'm very satisfied with the way he played."

In the absence of the former Monaco frontman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been exhibiting his undeniable talents. The young Swede has already plundered 10 goals so far this campaign, and Trezeguet faces a big task if he is to displace him from the starting XI.

Juventus' enigmatic playmaker, Alessandro Del Piero, has also been in good form, as he appears to have rekindled his love and desire for the game after a sequence of injuries looked like stifling one of the most promising careers in Italian football.

He too has been in goalscoring form this campaign, having notched seven times so far. Trezeguet, though, was generous in his praise for the striking excellence of his team-mates during his absence.

"Zlatan has shown his intelligence by the way he has quickly adapted to the Italian league from the Dutch one," he told Juventus.com. "He has learned quickly that over here it is more physical. He is scoring more often now because he's getting into the box more often. He's understood that goals are achieved in that area.

"I have also noticed that Alex (Del Piero) has been very motivated, he was boosted by the goal he scored against Livorno and I'm sure he will continue doing well."

In-form Cagliari will provide a stern test for the league leaders, though, and Gianfranco Zola will relish the chance to pit his skills against the Bianconeri defence. Although he has been substituted in 17 of his 18 matches this term, Cagliari coach Daniele Arrigoni has watched some quality performances from the veteran, and he has eight goals to his credit this season.

At the Stadio Sant'Elia the Sardinians have shown that they are a match for anybody. Indeed, only AC Milan have managed to beat them on home turf - way back in week six of the Serie A campaign. Cagliari have achieved 20 of their 25 points this season at home and have turned the Stadio Sant'Elia into something of a fortress.

Juventus hope that Manuele Blasi will be fit for this clash to reinforce their defence, since the pace of Cagliari strikers Antonio Langella and Mauro Esposito could be decisive, as they have scored five and nine goals respectively this term.

Trez eager for Cagliari chance

Football Italia

David Trezeguet made an impressive comeback midweek and claims he is ready to start against Cagliari on Sunday evening. "I will definitely be in Sardinia and I certainly expect to play at least some of the game," explained the Juve striker.

He had not stepped on to the field since undergoing shoulder surgery in early October, but has lost none of his spark by scoring one goal in the 3-3 Coppa Italia tie against Atalanta and seeing another incorrectly disallowed.

"I am at Coach Fabio Capello's full disposal and I'll accept any decision he makes. He knows I am ready to play when he thinks the time is right."

Trezeguet's return to full fitness will bring up some issues for the Coach, such as how he'll fit into the system with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alessandro Del Piero, or if the Italian will be benched altogether to make room.

"I can assure you the Atalanta game did not tire me out and I feel good," assured Trezeguet. "A couple of days are more than enough to get my energy levels back up. It was the comeback I was hoping for, with a goal and a good overall performance."

Juve squad: 1 Buffon, 4 Montero, 7 Pessotto, 8 Emerson, 9 Ibrahimovic, 10 Del Piero, 11 Nedved, 12 Chimenti, 16 Camoranesi, 17 Trezeguet, 18 Appiah, 19 Zambrotta, 20 Blasi, 21 Thuram, 22 Bonnefoi, 23 Kapo, 24 Olivera, 25 Zalayeta, 27 Zebina, 28 Cannavaro

Juve push for Puyol

Football Italia

The Bianconeri's January shopping isn't over with bids for Barca's Carles Puyol and Messina man Alessandro Parisi. Juventus have long been linked with the Spanish international and were close to a move last summer, but the matter has come up again following the decision to renew their defence.

Mark Iuliano has already joined Real Majorca, while Nicola Legrottaglie is days away from completing his switch to Bologna and Igor Tudor is in negotiations with West Bromwich Albion.

Puyol will be very difficult to prise away from the Nou Camp, but Juve are ready to offer Alessio Tacchinardi immediately in order to get his signature by the end of the season. Director General Luciano Moggi has another option open to him, though they will need to do battle with Inter in order to get their hands on Alessandro Parisi.

The Messina fullback - nicknamed the 'Sicilian Roberto Carlos' - scored 14 goals in Serie B last season and has been a revelation in the top flight, earning an Azzurri cap already. Inter were reportedly in talks with the player earlier this week, but Juventus are said to have captured an option on Parisi two years ago and are ready to make that preparation count.

The Turin giants have already signed Adrian Mutu this week, though reports from the UK suggest they could yet be caught in a legal web.

Collina eyes television future

Football Italia

This is Pierluigi Collina's last year as a referee in Serie A, but he admits he can't leave the football world altogether.

"I started out in 1977, but to be a referee was never a great ambition," he revealed in 'Calcio 2000'. "Until then I had played football like all young men. Everyone dreams of being a player, even if for the most part that's what it remains."

The Bologna-based referee became an international in 1995 and has one moment in his glittering career that stands out.

"All games are difficult and you have to be prepared when you step on to that pitch. Of course, I had the honour of refereeing the 2002 World Cup Final and I can tell you that was an unforgettable experience."

There are only a few months left before Collina must hang up his whistle, at least under Serie A rules, as he turns 45 on February 13.

There is hope he can continue, either in the Premiership with the opening up of borders, or with the tweaking of the Italian rules. "We are thinking of re-evaluating the age limits," revealed Referees' Association President Tullio Lanese. "Collina is a treasure for our sport and it's an issue that needs addressing, not just for him."

Another option for his future lies in television punditry, as the media savvy official slammed the current crop of Italian critics.

"The important thing for a referee is to understand why he made a mistake so that it won't happen again," he commented. "But many of the people currently criticising officials in the media are quite ignorant of the rules, so they see errors where there aren't any."

He could show them how it's done when he does retire from the game, even if he is still allowed to referee at international level until Dec 31 2005.

"I started following football when I was five years old and collecting stickers, so I don't think I could see my future without this sport, even if it's just back to filling the sticker album."

Cagliari-Juventus

Football Italia

Gianfranco Zola takes on the auld enemy as Juventus come to visit on-form Cagliari in a tough test of their Scudetto credentials.

Zola has had many a battle with the Bianconeri over the course of his career, as Parma and Juve challenged for the Scudetto, UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia during the 1990's. Now he represents his homeland and will be a key figure in this encounter, even if the veteran has been repeatedly substituted by Coach Daniele Arrigoni. It is a situation Alessandro Del Piero can sympathise with, as he has been replaced 17 times in 18 official games this season.

Cagliari's home form has been key to their success, both in Serie B and now that they have returned to the top flight, with 20 of their total 25 points picked up at the Stadio Sant'Elia. The only team to have conquered Sardinia so far has been Milan in Week 6, so Fabio Capello has his work cut out for him.

The Turin giants may have been crowned the Winter Champions a round early thanks to Milan's slip in Sicily, but the 4-2 victory over troubled Livorno highlighted growing problems in defence and especially midfield, where Manuele Blasi was sorely missed. It's hoped the ex-Perugia man can be fit enough to start this tie, as the pace of Antonio Langella and Mauro Esposito can be deadly.

Cagliari (probable): Iezzo; Lopez, Bega, Maltagliati, Agostini; Abeijon, Brambilla, Gobbi; Esposito, Zola, Langella

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Del Piero

Coppa exit angers Capello

Football Italia

An angry Fabio Capello has blasted his Juventus team for defeat to Atalanta in the Coppa Italia. "We self-destructed," he said. "The only positive thing about the night was the return of David Trezeguet.

"He's already achieved a lot when you consider he had shoulder surgery three months ago. I'll decide today whether or not he will feature against Cagliari."

The Bianconeri drew 3-3 with the Nerazzurri last night, which wasn't enough for qualification given the 2-0 first leg loss. The Coach added: "We gifted them their first goal and we should have paid more attention on the second. The strategy was to score three goals and not concede any."

The tactician admitted he was impressed with Atalanta's hat-trick hero Andrea Lazzari, but denied interest in the youngster. "He'll go down in history," said the Bianconeri boss. "We're sorted in attack so I wouldn't buy him."

Chelsea claim Mutu costs

Football Italia

Juventus could still be forced to pay a fee to Chelsea following the capture of Adrian Mutu on Wednesday. The Romanian international arrived in Turin on a free transfer after the London club sacked him earlier this season for failing a drugs test.

Chelsea are allegedly asking for around £10m in compensation for the player they bought at a cost of £15.8m in August 2003. Juventus, who will officially unveil Mutu to the media next week, may offer out of favour defender Igor Tudor as part of any agreement.

The striker, who is suspended until mid May, was in Turin this morning to undergo a medical.

Mutu forces Juventus to offload Southampton, West Brom target Tudor

Tribal Football

Southampton have been linked with Juventus defender Igor Tudor. Having signed Romanian Adrian Mutu, Juve must offload the Croatia international before the transfer window shuts due to his non-EU status. Southampton are regarded as favourites in Italy to land Tudor, who is also being chased by West Brom and Standard Liege.

Juventus defender Legrottaglie confirms Bologna move

Tribal Football

Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie has confirmed he's on the verge of signing with Bologna. The chance to work with coach Carlo Mazzone convinced Legrottaglie to choose Bologna and he is now waiting for the terms of his loan to be agreed between the two clubs.

"Yes, it is a decision that we have taken - both myself and Juve," revealed Legrottaglie. "It is important that I return to play, Bologna is the ideal team for this and Mazzone is someone I admire a lot."

Kashima join Yokohama push for Juventus star Del Piero

Tribal Football

Kashima Antlers have expressed interest in Juventus attacking midfielder Alessandro del Piero. The Italy international is the subject of a tentative approach from Yokohama Marinos, which backed by sportswear giants Adidas, has drawn up a two-year contract offer for Del Piero to consider.

Yokohama's plans are said to involve signing Del Piero in December this year, though the bid could even be put back to the summer of 2006. The J-League club's offer will fall short of Del Piero's current £3.75 million salary at Juve, but the opportunity of commercial spin-offs from playing in Japan will offset the drop in wages.

Kashima are also in the frame, though their interest so far is preliminary.

Jankulovski heading for Milan

Football Italia

Udinese midfielder Marek Jankulovski has reportedly agreed a £6m transfer to champions Milan. An agreement has allegedly been struck between Rossoneri chief Adriano Galliani and Udinese President Giampaolo Pozzo.

The Czech international, who has yet to officially sign, will finish this season at the Stadio Friuli before moving to the San Siro. Milan are understood to have offered him a four-year deal which will see his salary rise to around £1m a season.

Rossoneri fans will get a close look at Jankulovksi, who was also linked with Juventus and Inter, at the weekend when Udinese arrive in Serie A.

In other transfer news, Roma and Juve are engaged in a tug of war over Vicenza's Massimo Bonanni. The capital side co-own the midfielder but the Bianconeri have recently made an offer for the player.

"I met with Roma sporting director Franco Baldini a few days ago and he said he doesn't want Bonanni to be sold this January," stated Vicenza director general Sergio Gasparin. "This probably means that nothing will happen before June. Juventus? We haven't sold our share in Bonanni to them."

Totti issues new quit threat

Football Italia

Francesco Totti admits he will consider his Roma future after he was insulted by his own fans. The incident occurred during the Coppa Italia match against Siena last night, after Giallorossi fans hurled flares on the pitch - causing the game to be suspended for over an hour due to poor visibility.

The situation got so bad that the capital captain approached the supporters and pleaded with them to behave. "I went to the Curva to tell them not to ignite any more fireworks, and my own fans insulted me and threw bottles," he told Roma Channel. "I don't understand why and I don't think I deserve it."

The star player's contract expires in 2006 and he has already been linked with moves to Real Madrid, Milan and Inter. "I feel really humiliated," the No 10 continued. "I'm going to have to weigh up the situation at the end of the season because this is too great a blow to just brush aside."

Totti had previously already warned President Franco Sensi that he would leave the club unless Roma remain a competitive force.

Barca baulk at Iaquinta price

Football Italia

Barcelona confirm they are interested in Vincenzo Iaquinta, but refuse to meet Udinese's new £6m asking price. "We are on the look-out for a striker and Iaquinta is one of the options," Barca President Joan Laporta told 'Radio Efe'.

"In any case, we are not prepared to pay the £6m that Udinese have asked us for this player. The ideal scenario would be a loan with an option to buy at the end of the season."

The Spaniards need a new forward who is available for the Champions' League, as Henrik Larsson has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign following knee ligament surgery. However, Udinese aren't ready to part with Iaquinta unless it's an offer they can't refuse, as the club is currently leading the battle for Champions' League places.

It's reported the Friuli outfit has offered to release the centre-forward for £1.3m immediately and another £5m at the end of the season, but that too has been shot down by Barca. Coach Frank Rijkaard has shown an interest in the player, who has also been linked with Milan, Lazio and Juventus over the last few months, so the deal could be pushed back to June.

"We are still in negotiations with Udinese and hope everything can be sorted out in a positive manner," concluded Laporta.
