Ibra eyes golden future

Football Italia

Zlatan Ibrahimovic hopes his move to Juventus will one day see him win the prestigious Golden Ball.

"I want to be the best there is and that is why I want to be named as the European Footballer of the Year in the future," said the Swede. "I have no interest in being second best. I'm expressing myself at decent levels right now but I'm working hard in order to live up to my potential."

Ibra's name is on the 50-man shortlist for this year's Golden Ball but Milan ace Andriy Shevchenko is set to lift the honour. Ibrahimovic arrived in Turin on transfer deadline day after an £11.5m fee was agreed with Ajax. The Swedish international has settled in well and has already scored seven goals in Serie A so far.

"I admire players who make the difference like Ronaldo," the 23-year-old added after last night's 1-1 draw with Maccabi Tel Aviv. "But all that I am concentrating on right now is the game against Bologna at the weekend.

"Only after that match will I start to focus on the Milan clash, because every tie in Italy is so tough."

Del Piero: I Want To Avoid Barca, Real And Utd

Goal.com

The Juventus captain would prefer to play against a less quoted side in the next round of the Champions League. Alessandro Del Piero was satisfied following Juve's 1-1 draw at Maccabi, where he scored his second goal of this Champions League edition.

"I found myself well with Zalayeta. It was a good game even though after Maccabi's goal we went into confusion. However we recovered well."

Pintuircchio also stated his preferences for the next stage of Europe's top competition, where he would like to avoid in particular Barcelona.

"For the next round, all teams are the same. If I had to choose, I would avoid Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United. Especially I would like to avoid the Catalan side right now."

The draw for the next round of the Champions League will be held on Friday 17th of December.

Capello Appreciates Juve's Character

Goal.com

Despite not achieving the 100% record target, the Juventus boss was still satisfied with his team's performance against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Fabio Capello was especially happy with the character his players showed on the pitch as a Juve side missing some first team regulars still succeeded in equalizing against a more motivated squad.

"We played a good game. In the first 25 minutes the team was in command of the match then they took good measures and took advantage of a mistake we made in the penalty.

"In the second half we were back even though we cannot forget the great save our keeper made. I especially liked the character we showed. Those that went on the pitch did what they had to do."

Mavuba catches Juve's eye

Sky Sports

Juventus are on the trail of Bordeaux's highly-rated young midfielder Rio Mavuba. The 20-year-old's career has enjoyed a meteoric rise during the past 12 months following his breakthrough into the Bordeaux first team.

Despite his lack of professional experience, Mavuba has already forced his way into the France squad and has been regularly involved under Raymond Domenech.

His progress was rewarded by Bordeaux in October when the midfielder was handed a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2009. That has not deterred his suitors, with Juve having dispatched a scout to watch Mavuba in action last weekend.

Mavuba's performance against Auxerre was put under the microscope by the Italian giants, who will now weigh up a move for the starlet. Juve made a hugely successful raid on Les Girondins in the past when they lured Zinedine Zidane to Stadio Delle Alpi and Mavuba is tipped for a similarly stellar career.

Tacchi not off to Barca

Football Italia

Barcelona are set to fail in their bid to sign Alessio Tacchinardi from Juventus in the New Year. The midfielder is believed to be Barca's primary January transfer target but the player looks set to remain in Turin.

"I really don't think that Tacchinardi will be leaving for Spain," suggested his agent Alessandro Moggi. "I firmly believe that he will stay at Juventus which will satisfy both the player and the club."

The Italian's future at the Stadio Delle Alpi has been in doubt since the departure of Marcello Lippi. Tacchinardi was a first team regular under the now Italy boss but he's struggled to get a game this term.

New Coach Fabio Capello prefers to play with Emerson and the young Manuele Blasi in central midfield. That fuelled speculation that a Liga switch was on the agenda for the former Atalanta youth product.

Meanwhile, Juventus are again being linked with a move for Marek Jankulovski of Udinese. Latest reports suggest that they will offer £3.5m and the services of Rodrigo Taddei - if Juve can sign him from Siena in January.

Milan consider Bonera option

Football Italia

Alberto Gilardino may not be the only Parma player set for a move to Milan, as Daniele Bonera could join him. It's understood that the Stadio Tardini duo are expected to be targeted at the end of the season.

Whispers in the peninsula claim that initial negotiations have already taken place. Milan's Adriano Galliani and Ariedo Braida are believed to have met Arrigo Sacchi and Luca Baraldi last week after the game between the two sides.

Bonera, now a regular Italian international, is liked as he can play as both a right-back and a central defender. Although the Rossoneri have one of the strongest defences around, the likes of Paolo Maldini, Marcos Cafu and Jaap Stam may not have too much time left in their careers.

Bonera was heavily associated with a move to Juventus before the start of this season but no switch took place.

Legrottaglie ponders exit

Football Italia

Nicola Legrottaglie's agent has confirmed that his client could leave Juventus after Christmas.

"He's not finding a lot of space in the Juventus team at this moment in time," stated Alessandro Moggi. "We may think about a change in January even if we haven't spoken about it yet. After all, there are still 20 days until the market opens."

The defender arrived at the Stadio Delle Alpi from Chievo in the summer of 2003 but has struggled. He was heavily criticised for his performances in his first campaign and now doesn't feature in Fabio Capello's plans.

Legrottaglie is no more than a squad player now after the signing of Fabio Cannavaro from Inter. The Italian international defender has been linked with a move to Roma, to work under former Chievo boss Gigi Del Neri.

Meanwhile, Moggi has commented on rumours that he could soon become the director general of Roma.

"It would fascinate me to come up against my father (Juve director general) Luciano," he revealed. "But I would only do that if I was asked by a big club. Roma? They are certainly that."

Gasbarroni wants out

Football Italia

Former Under-21 international Andrea Gasbarroni has told Palermo that he wants a transfer. The winger is struggling to get a regular game this term and he's eager to not waste the rest of the season on the bench.

"I've got no room here and I'll be leaving during the January transfer window," said the player who is part owned by Juventus. Possible destinations for the midfielder include Sampdoria, where he has played in the past, and Torino.

"I would like to stay in Serie A and it would be great to work under Walter Novellino again," he stated. "All that I know for sure is that I don't want to be a problem for Palermo so it is best to end things here."

Bologna - Juventus

Football Italia

Milan are keeping the pressure on the leaders and only a victory at the Stadio Dall'Ara will ensure the four-point gap stays solid going into next week's Scudetto showdown.

Juventus suffered a scare against Lazio last Sunday, going behind and only managing to turn the situation around in the closing stages with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's seventh goal of the season.

Ruben Olivera was also on target that day and suffered a thigh injury that'll force him to miss this trip, though Pavel Nedved returns after a bout of flu. Alessandro Del Piero is again set to start following a long lay-off and he must now recover his best form ahead of the clash with Milan.

Bologna were beaten by a wicked Enzo Maresca free kick away to Fiorentina last weekend and have now picked up just one point from their last three games. However, Carlo Mazzone's men tend to step up a gear when confronted by the big clubs, beating Parma and Roma this season before holding Inter at the San Siro.

Their real problem is a lack of goals, but that crisis should be eased by the end of ex-Juve striker Giacomo Cipriani's two-match ban, while Igli Tare has also recovered from injury. Mazzone is forced to reshuffle his defence with both Valentin Nastase and Fabio Petruzzi suspended, so Juarez and Alessandro Gamberini step in.

Bologna (probable): Pagliuca; Juarez, Gamberini, Sussi; Zagorakis, Colucci, Amoroso, Smit; Meghni, Locatelli; Cipriani

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Del Piero

Maccabi TA 1 - 1 Juventus

Football Italia

Juventus celebrates Del Piero's equalizer

Maccabi Tel Aviv became the first team to pierce Juve's net in the Champions' League, but Alex Del Piero maintained their unbeaten record.

The Bianconeri came into this game with five consecutive 1-0 victories and hoped to keep their defence unbeaten in the final Group phase test. Gianluigi Buffon was rested in favour of Antonio Chimenti, while Alessandro Del Piero partnered Marcelo Zalayeta.

The Israeli side could still challenge for a UEFA Cup spot and had a strong start with Zitoni taking advantage of Paolo Montero's error to drill over the bar, while Pavel Nedved's finish was not too far off the target soon after.

Nedved missed the Serie A match with Lazio due to a bout of flu, but he was back on form and his fierce drive was punched out by goalkeeper Gal Nir. The Bianconeri really should have taken the lead after 20 minutes, but Del Piero, Gianluca Pessotto and Olivier Kapo all failed to get the final shot tucked away.

Instead, Juventus conceded their first goal of the competition proper when Jonathan Zebina pushed Emile Mbamba in the area and Barukh Dego converted the resulting penalty. Maccabi's confidence was boosted and Chimenti was called to save on Salem Abo Siam, while Cohen curled a free kick past the post.

Stephen Appiah replaced Manuele Blasi after the break as he suffered a bruised shin. Nedved and substitute Appiah had chances to draw level, while goalkeeper Nir took two attempts to finally get Kapo's shot under control.

Del Piero scores the equalizer for Juventus

Gianluca Zambrotta came on as a substitute and within two minutes had helped Juventus equalise. His free kick was touched on by Marcelo Zalayeta and Del Piero turned in from close range.

It was the captain's final contribution to the game as he made way for Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Chimenti filled in admirably for Buffon with a crucial late save on Giovanini's downward header after some good build-up from Cohen.

Maccabi Tel Aviv: Nir; Abo-Siam, Strool, Giovanini, Moosa; T Cohen, Mishaelof (Reis 75), Zitoni (Mesika 82), Dego, L Cohen; Mbamba (Addo 76)

Juventus: Chimenti; Pessotto (Zambrotta 69), Montero, Cannavaro, Zebina; Nedved, Tacchinardi, Blasi (Appiah 46), Kapo; Zalayeta, Del Piero (Ibrahimovic 73)

Capello pleased with progress

Football Italia

Fabio Capello and Alessandro Del Piero were satisfied at being one of three teams to end the Group phase unbeaten.

"I am not upset at conceding a goal, as I knew it was important to maintain our unbeaten record," said the Coach after their 1-1 draw in Israel.

"Maccabi Tel Aviv are a strong side on home turf and we were punished for our first error, which made them more confident and they caused us a few more problems. We could easily have won towards the end with Del Piero and another interesting scoring opportunity with Olivier Kapo."

Many top stars were rested for this trip to Israel, but perhaps the most sorely missed element was Emerson in midfield. "It's clear that Emerson is an important player, but nobody is irreplaceable at Juventus. It is the team ethic that wins games and not an individual."

Capello refused to comment on the Second Round draw, which will be made next Friday and could give Juve a superstar match against the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

"You can't make a prediction on a match, let alone a draw, so we are all waiting to find out what happens. In knockout rounds so much depends on the approach and how much you can stand the pressure."

Alessandro Del Piero's goal ensured Juve remain one of only three teams to end the Group phase unbeaten along with Inter and Arsenal.

"We played well all over the park and the only thing that troubled us was that penalty," said the captain. "It's good to maintain concentration during a match that didn't really mean much to Juventus. Scoring goals is nice on a personal level, but the important thing is that the team wins."

The Italian international was less cagey when asked about the draw and pinpointed the three sides he hopes Juve won't pull out of the hat.

"Clearly when a team reaches this stage then it deserves to be there, but I'd say Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United are the toughest opponents with the Nou Camp outfit a step above the rest. These are the ones we'd like to avoid."

Second Round draw:

Pot 1: Milan, Inter, Arsenal, Chelsea, Juventus, Lyon, Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco

Pot 2: Barcelona, Werder Bremen, PSV, Porto, Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Liverpool

Juve want unbeaten tag

Football Italia

Juventus, who have already qualified, are looking to avoid defeat when they face Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions' League. The Italian giants have already won their group with five 1-0 victories and they are keen to continue their unbeaten run tonight.

"The objective is to not lose and not to concede a goal," said boss Fabio Capello ahead of the Israeli fixture.

The Bianconeri have the chance to equal a record this evening if they win again – matching Milan's 1992 achievement under Capello. "We're not interested in that," responded the tactician. "The only thing we want from this competition is to win it."

The Turin boys will be without Camoranesi, Thuram, Emerson and Olivera amongst others, but expect a relatively strong side.

"I'll use the rotation system but I won't go over the top. There will be a strong spine and Pavel Nedved will return after illness. We want to do well," added Capello.

Alex Del Piero may also start after his recent fitness issues. "I'm happy with how I am physically," he explained. "Maccabi? I want to win summer friendlies so I obviously would like to collect the three points in the Champions' League.

"We'll also try to score more than just one goal but there are times in games when you need to know how to defend."

Juventus coach Capello big fan of Cagliari's Langella

Tribal Football

Juventus coach Fabio Capello is keeping tabs on Cagliari midfielder Antonio Langella. Capello has told his directors that Langella is displaying the qualities this season to suggest he could be a genuine successor to Pavel Nedved at Juve.

Juve will continue to track Langella's progress this season ahead of the summer market, when they will also consider a move for the midfielder's Cagliari teammate David Suazo.

Moggi reveals Kapo faith

Sky Sports

Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi has insisted they are not interested in selling Olivier Kapo. Kapo has struggled to hold down a regular place in Turin since his summer move from Auxerre and German side Borussia Dortmund have been in touch about securing the forward's services on loan.

Moggi insists he believes Kapo has the talent to succeed and wants the Frenchman to prove his quality in Turin. "Borussia Dortmund have been in contact with us for some time about Kapo, but I don't want them to have him," Moggi told Gazzetta Dello Sport.

Moggi also revealed that other teams have expressed interest in Kapo. "It's true," he added. "Monaco asked about him in the summer, but we have not let him go, as we believe in Kapo. He only has to improve a little in order to be a big champion."

Del Piero Still Far From Best Condition

Goal.com

The Bianconero player admitted that he is still not 100% fit due to the various injuries picked up this season. Alessandro Del Piero returned to the Juve squad for the match against Lazio, but despite the Bianconeri winning 2-1, 'Pinturicchio' failed to leave his mark on the match.

"Against Lazio we did well. My second stop of the season lasted three weeks, even though my continuous stopping is not the best thing to find my best form and consistency."

Fabio Capello is hoping to have the best Del Piero available for the important title match against Milan, in program on Sunday 19th of December.

Juventus chief fed-up with Udinese over Jankulovski

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi is losing patience with Udinese over negotiations for midfielder Marek Jankulovski.

Moggi wants to seal an agreement in January for the Czech Republic international and has proposed a player swap deal. But despite offering a choice of Olivier Kapo, Ruben Olivera and Marcelo Zalayeta, Moggi is yet to find common ground with Udinese officials.

Fed up, Moggi has turned to Lazio's Cesar and the Rome club's president, Claudio Lotito, has already fielded an enquiry from Juve about the Brazilian's availability.

West Brom rival Newcastle for Juventus defender Tudor

Tribal Football

West Bromwich Albion boss Bryan Robson is chasing Juventus defender Igor Tudor. Robson is already in talks with Brescia midfielder Matias Almeyda about a January move to the Premiership and is also keen on Inter Milan striker Julio Cruz.

Juve are asking £3 million for Tudor, who along with West Brom is attracting interest from Newcastle United. Robson is using his good name on the continent to attract established internationals to the Hawthorns as he attempts to haul the Baggies away from the drop-zone.

Milan turn to Chivu

Football Italia

Milan are looking at Roma's Cristian Chivu as a long-term replacement for the legendary Paolo Maldini. The 36-year-old is expected to end his career in the summer of 2006 and the Rossoneri are already planning ahead.

Chivu is liked because he has the versatility of the Italian given that he can play as a centre-back and a left-back. Reports suggest that Franco Baresi, who is currently in charge of the Milan Primavera side, has urged his club to take an interest.

The Romanian did impress many in his first Serie A campaign following his 2003 switch from Ajax. However, he's hardly played so far this term after having surgery twice on a broken foot injury. Chivu could be sold by Roma at the end of the season, who are still struggling financially, if a big enough offer is made.

The 24-year-old has also been strongly associated with both Inter and Juventus in the past. The latter could be especially keen as Chivu worked remarkably well under boss Fabio Capello last term.

Totti denies exit talk

Football Italia

Francesco Totti has quickly diffused reports that he is looking to leave Roma at the end of the season. A Spanish newspaper today suggested that the Italian would quit the Stadio Olimpico outfit if a new owner didn't arrive.

"My contract expires in 2006 and if President Franco Sensi stays then I will decide to leave," the captain was quoted as saying by the 'AS' newspaper. "It is my hope that Sensi sells. At that point I will speak to the new owner in an effort to find out the plans for the future. I want to play for a competitive Roma."

However, Totti immediately hit back at those statements. "It's all a misunderstanding," he replied on Tuesday. "I feel like a Romanista and I am happy to remain here. Roma is the club of my life."

Totti's future has been at the centre of speculation for some time as he has just 18 months left on his current deal. Although he has today committed himself to the Giallorossi, there is a possibility that he could still leave.

Especially as Real Madrid President Florentino Perez is in the Italian capital ahead of Wednesday's Champions' League tie. The Spanish giants are known to be keen on signing the Italian international at the end of this season.

Lippi open to Zola return

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi has hinted at a shock Italian international recall for 38-year-old Gianfranco Zola following his fine performances for Cagliari.

"The door to the Azzurri is open for everyone," assured the tactician this afternoon. "In some situations you can even call up a 38-year-old. The important thing is that people with enthusiasm come here."

The former Chelsea star is currently helping Serie A new boys Cagliari climb into fourth place and scored a brace at the weekend.

"I hope to create a list of 30 or 40 players to choose from when working out my World Cup squad," added the Coach. "When I was appointed I met with many top flight clubs and Zola asked if he should be at the meeting. I told him the door was open to everyone."

Zola's last international cap was earned on October 11 1997, when England held Italy to a 0-0 draw in the World Cup qualifiers.

"The enthusiasm players have shown about being part of the Azzurri experience is what most impressed me during my first six months in charge. I thought I'd have to urge them on, but instead their passion for the game has boosted me."

The former Juventus boss point blank refused to discuss the recent Turin doping trial at the Expogoal football convention, but concentrated on the new breed of stars in Serie A.

"I am glad to see that the big clubs are back on track in the Champions' League after last season's shock exits, while in Italy smaller sides like Palermo, Messina and Cagliari are coming to the fore. It is my job to build a team based on the previous Azzurri line-up with elements of the Under-21 European Champions and the Serie A stars of today."

Two clubs are dominating the Scudetto race so far and it is unusual to see such a large gap between second-placed Milan and the chasing pack.

"I really didn't expect this scenario, but we mustn't forget that the season is even longer this year and there is still time to get back into the running. Next week's Milan-Juve clash will be important, but not decisive."

The Italy boss also looked at the Francesco Totti situation at Roma with clubs such as Real Madrid trying to tempt him away from his home town.

"He has scored 106 goals with Roma and, considering his age, has time to really make his mark on the history of this club. I don't think he needs to leave in order to find international acclaim, as the Giallorossi have always done well in recent years."

Ibrahimovic on a high

Football Italia

Zlatan Ibrahimovic admits his move to Juventus has boosted his confidence. While the club are being linked with a new striker. The Swedish international scored his seventh League goal of the campaign yesterday to net his side a 2-1 win over Lazio.

"I feel like a much better player since I came here," commented the former Ajax star. "My goal against Lazio wasn't only beautiful but very important.

"It wasn't easy to get a win because the Biancocelesti played very well and caused us some real problems. But we are a squad who never give up and our tremendous strength came out at the end of the day."

Meanwhile, Monaco's Shabani Nonda is being associated with a summer move to the Stadio Delle Alpi. The powerful striker is available on a free transfer and his agent has hinted of a Bianconeri swoop.

"We've spoken to Monaco on a number of occasions about an extension but their offer doesn't satisfy us," his agent is quoted as saying. "We've received some very interesting offers from abroad. Shab wants to join a big club and he is honoured by Juventus' interest."

The 27-year-old has reportedly been on director general Luciano Moggi's wish list for some time.

Legrottaglie wins dud award

Football Italia

Nicola Legrottaglie of Juventus has netted an unwanted award after being named as the biggest flop of 2004. The central defender has been assigned the 'Bidone d'Oro 2004' after listener votes compiled by Radio 2 Rai programme Catersport.

Legrottaglie, who succeeds former Milan player Rivaldo, has had a nightmare time since joining the Turin giants in the summer of 2003. His debut campaign at the Stadio Delle Alpi was poor and he rarely features under new boss Fabio Capello.

Legrottaglie is joined by some illustrious names on this year's podium as Inter's Christian Vieri came second, while Alex Del Piero of Juventus was third. Inter's Marco Materazzi finished fourth.

Meanwhile, Legrottaglie is not part of the Bianconeri squad for their Champions' League game at Maccabi Tel Aviv on Wednesday. Emerson, Ruben Olivera, Lilian Thuram and the suspended Mauro Camoranesi have also been omitted. The Italian outfit have already won their group after five 1-0 wins.

Squad: Buffon, Ferrara, Tacchinardi, Montero, Tudor, Pessotto, Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Nedved, Chimenti, Birindelli, Appiah, Zambrotta, Blasi, Bonnefoi, Kapo, Zalayeta, Zebina, Cannavaro

Italy Planning Euro 2012 Bid

Goal.com

Italian football federation president Franco Carraro has asked the Italian government to ok an Italian bid for the 2012 European championships.

"The European championships could represent an important financial chance for our country. The European Championships brought an economic boost to Portugal as oppose to the Olympics, that forced a huge debt upon Greece," he said.

Italian prime minister and AC Milan president Berlusconi has been reported as favourable to the initiative.

Chelsea to splash out big on Betis ace Joaquin

Tribal Football

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon won't give up on his push to bring Real Betis wing ace Joaquin to Stamford Bridge next season.

The Spanish international revealed last week that he had turned down an offer from Chelsea as he wants to remain in Spain. But Kenyon, along with owner Roman Abramovich, is convinced he can force Betis to cash in on Joaquin with a £25 million bid, says the News of World.

Kenyon gave Joaquin a tour of Stamford Bridge last season and the youngster remains Chelsea's top target to strengthen the team's right-side of midfield. With Arjen Robben outstanding on Chelsea's left, Abramovich and Kenyon want to pair him with the best young, right-sided winger in Europe in Joaquin.

Chelsea favourites to land Corinthians ace Tevez

Tribal Football

Chelsea are expected to eventually land Argie ace Carlos Tevez, despite his move last week from Boca Juniors to Corinthians. Tevez's switch has shocked South American football, but the Mail on Sunday says Chelsea could be the big winners from the striker's controversial move.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has a 15 per cent stake in Media Sports Investment, a British investment fund that actually finances Corinthians.

Its been suggested Abramovich's Chelsea now have first refusal on Tevez and could also have a similar agreement for midfielder Marcelo Motta, who surprisingly snubbed a move to Real Betis to pen a long-term deal with Corinthians last week.

AC Milan's Shevchenko on Chelsea wanted list

Football Italia

AC Milan striker Andrei Shevchenko remains a target for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. The pair are good friends and Abramovich has often spoken with the Ukrainian ace about moving to Stamford Bridge.

The Sunday Mirror says Abramovich won't take no for an answer from Milan chiefs in his pursuit for Shevchenko, who is nominated for FIFA's Player of the Year.

AC Milan held fresh Gilardino talks with Parma

Tribal Football

AC Milan and Parma chiefs held talks over the future of striker Alberto Gilardino on Saturday. At halftime of their clash, Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani and Ariedo Braida met with Parma director general Luca Baraldi to discuss Gilardino's transfer to the San Siro.

Talks are on schedule which will see Gilardino move to Milan in June, even if he did score against his future employers in Parma's 2-1 defeat.

"I wanted to show I am a serious professional," insisted the striker last night. "Last season they were talking about me joining Juventus and I scored against them to show my focus was only on Parma. I have done the same this time against AC Milan. I am a professional and only want to do my best for Parma."

Baresi urges AC Milan to go for Roma's Chivu

Tribal Football

AC Milan are ready to test the resolve of cash-strapped AS Roma with a bid for defender Cristian Chivu. Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has spoken with club legend Franco Baresi about the Romania international and is now convinced Chivu is the man to succeed 36 year-old veteran Paolo Maldini.

Baresi has told Galliani that Chivu will move smoothly into Milan's defence alongside Alessandro Nesta and has urged the Milan chief to move for the left-sided defender when the summer market opens.

Chelsea to offer £30M for Liverpool ace Gerrard

Tribal Football

Chelsea are set to make a massive £30 million offer for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. Kop chief Rick Parry said failure to win a trophy could see Gerrard quit. He said: "We cannot guarantee that any player will stay in this day and age."

Chelsea are ready to revive their bid to land Gerrard, who almost moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer before committing to Liverpool after Euro2004.

Juventus 2 - 1 Lazio

Ibrahimovic scores Juventus' winner

Zlatan Ibrahimovic completed a strong comeback as Juventus get back to winning ways by deepening Lazio's gloom.

Mimmo Caso's job was on the line after Lazio's UEFA Cup exit, but the pressure was also on Fabio Capello's men with Milan closing up the gap. Pavel Nedved was ruled out due to a bout of flu, but Alessandro Del Piero returned from a muscular problem.

Juve took the initiative and were extremely unlucky not to score after nine minutes. Mauro Camoranesi's cross reached Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the back post and his header into the ground thumped the crossbar with Matteo Sereni beaten.

However, it was Lazio who took the lead with their first real effort soon after. Youngster Goran Pandev dribbled past three different Juventus defenders around the six-yard box before slamming in a precise angled drive. It was a spectacular solo effort from the Macedonian ex-Inter striker, though there was also good build-up play from Roberto Muzzi.

Massimo Oddo needed a goalline clearance to prevent Ibrahimovic drawing level, even if he was probably in an offside position, then Del Piero's volley was off target.

Ibrahimovic's glancing header on Ruben Olivera's cross skimmed the far post as Lazio were being squeezed into their own half. Del Piero couldn't believe he failed to score from a brilliant assist by Ibrahimovic, as he somehow ballooned over the bar with only Sereni to beat.

Ruben Olivera scores Juventus' equalizer and gets a congratulatory hug from Juventus captain Del Piero

Juventus eventually got their equaliser just before the break, as a free kick was played down the right and Mauro Camoranesi's chipped cross was met by a powerful Ruben Olivera header. There was bad news for the Uruguayan, as a few minutes later he limped off with a muscular problem to be replaced by Olivier Kapo.

Lazio had a strong start to the second half with a chance for Pandev, who couldn't make the most of Muzzi's cutback, then he fired over the bar from close range.

Juve fought back and Sereni had to fly across his own goal to prevent Fernando Couto's wayward header going in, while Ibrahimovic's header was just wide from a Kapo cross.

Sereni performed another fine reaction save, this time on Emerson's header from a Camoranesi free kick, but for the most part Juve were unable to really trouble the Lazio goalkeeper.

There was controversy on 70 minutes when Ibrahimovic felt he was dragged down in the area by Jose Talamonti, but the referee waved away penalty appeals.

Juve managed to take the lead for the first time with 15 minutes left on the clock. Kapo deserved much of the credit for skipping past two defenders on the right, but a lucky deflection turned his cross into the path of Ibrahimovic for a tap-in.

Lazio poured forward for a fiery final few minutes with Gianluigi Buffon rushing off his line to clear from substitute Simone Inzaghi, while Couto bravely blocked off an Ibrahimovic counter-attack.

A deflected Camoranesi strike skimmed the woodwork of an open goal and Lazio tried until the end, but Juventus get back to winning ways.

Juventus: Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Appiah, Olivera (Kapo 45); Del Piero (Zalayeta 70), Ibrahimovic

Lazio: Sereni; Oddo (Lopez 46), Talamonti, Siviglia, Couto; Cesar (Inzaghi 80), Filippini, Gianichedda, Dabo; Pandev, Muzzi (Rocchi 62)

Post-Match Comments

Fabio Capello: "We can't play football assuming that we've already won just because we are wearing Juventus jerseys. A team needs to put pressure on its opponents and run for 90 minutes. Nonetheless, I am satisfied with our comeback, as we were patient and recovered from a difficult, albeit avoidable, early goal."

Capello fears Lazio trap

Football Italia

Lazio may be struggling this season, but Fabio Capello warns they can still pose a threat to the leaders this afternoon. "We must approach this game with the utmost concentration and determination," said the Juventus Coach. "These are precisely the kind of fixtures that often have a sting in the tail."

The Bianconeri must win to maintain the gap from Milan, whose 2-1 victory at Parma on Saturday saw them close it up to just one point. "Lazio are a side that deserve the utmost respect and have many players who can turn a game at any given moment," he added.

It could be boss Mimmo Caso's last match in charge of the Capital club following their embarrassing UEFA Cup exit without winning a single encounter.

This will be a special fixture for Paolo Di Canio, who clashed with Capello during their time together at Milan. "Di Canio has played for Juventus, Milan, Premiership clubs and now Lazio," noted the tactician. "I think he has achieved what he wanted to in his career."

The Turin giants are forced to reshuffle their squad after Pavel Nedved dropped out with a virus, but Alessandro Del Piero returns from a muscular problem.

"Nedved has had flu for the last three days and told me he just could not make it this weekend. As for his replacement, Olivier Kapo can play both out wide and as a support striker, while Ruben Olivera is more of a midfielder who is useful in the centre or on the wing."

Juventus consider bid for Vicenza striker Bonanni

Tribal Football

Juventus are weighing up a bid for Vicenza youngster Massimo Bonanni. The striker has been followed by Juve scouts since Marcello Lippi was in charge and could be signed in January.

Juve directors are considering signing Bonanni and immediately negotiating a 50-50 co-ownership deal with Fiorentina in a similar agreement to what exists for Giorgio Chellini.

Juventus v Lazio: Preview

ESPN Soccernet

Under-fire Lazio coach Mimmo Caso takes his team to Turin knowing he can ill-afford to taste defeat against Serie A leaders Juventus.

Caso, who succeeded Roberto Mancini in the summer, has seen his side slip to 13th in the table and they suffered a further blow in midweek when they were eliminated from the UEFA Cup after only managing a 2-2 draw at Greek side Egaleo.

That was a severe blow for club president Claudio Lotito, who had high hopes of his team going far in Europe.

"I didn't see the team of gladiators that I expected considering the importance of this game," he said. "At this point not only the coach is under question but also the players. I don't exclude sending away some of my players especially those that claim they are not fit to play."

Thursday's result has heaped more pressure on Caso's men after last weekend's 3-2 league loss against Cagliari came hot on the heels of their Coppa Italia defeat to the same opponents. The Lazio fans are becoming increasingly impatient with the inexperienced boss, who many consider not up to the job.

Lazio passed up a golden opportunity to climb to fourth position in the standings last weekend but now travel to Turin hoping to climb out of the bottom half. Rivals Juventus will be keen to avoid a repeat of last weekend's performance against Internazionale in which they gave away two late goals - and two points.

The 2-2 draw helped AC Milan reduce the gap at the top to just four points.

"The draw feels more like a defeat," admitted defender Fabio Cannavaro. "We have made mistakes and we have relaxed and allowed Inter to get back in the game. We cannot afford to make these kind of errors in the future."

With the Rossoneri facing a seemingly easier battle against demoralised Parma this weekend, the Bianconeri will look to hold on to the league leadership ahead of the clash with the Rossoneri at the Delle Alpi in a fortnight.

Lazio will have to put their worries behind them if they expect to come out victorious against the best attack and defence in Italy's top flight. Juve have netted 25 goals and conceded just six in 13 games.

The Bianconeri welcome back Alessandro Del Piero, who missed last weekend's game through injury. Del Piero will play alongside Juve's top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack. Fabio Capello will have to do without playmaker Pavel Nedved, who is sidelined with flu and will be replaced by Olivier Kapo.

Lazio will be without first choice goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi, who was sent off against Cagliari. Matteo Sereni will deputise. On a positive note for Caso, defender Sebastiano Siviglia, midfielder Giuliano Giannichedda and striker Tomasso Rocchi all return after missing last week's match against Cagliari.

Capello: No more nice guys

Football Italia

Fabio Capello has started a debate on whether the ball should be put out of play when an opponent is down injured, claiming it's a right that is often abused.

"As of the game with Lazio," said the experienced Coach, "Juve's players will not put the ball out of play for an injury. It's just getting ridiculous now and people are fainting to stop counter-attacks."

In Italy there is an unwritten rule that play should be stopped every time an opponent is on the ground in need of treatment, but players and tacticians alike are increasingly frustrated with how strictly that rule is applied.

"We also spoke to the directors about this," continued Capello, "and the decision was not sparked by a single incident, but rather by a general trend. I say this now to warn our future opponents."

The statements have immediately caused controversy and started a debate around Serie A, with several clubs sharing his sentiments.

"I think it all depends on the situation," said Roma Coach Gigi Del Neri. "I am convinced that when you're on the field you know when an injury is serious. They should only stop play when there is a clash of heads, not for a tackle. We've all been conned a few too many times."

Palermo boss Francesco Guidolin also came to Capello's aid on this contentious issue. "We've had enough of this fake fair play. It is up to the referee to halt play when the situation requires it. Of course, everything would be simpler if players just agreed not to trick each other and signed a code of conduct."

Bologna's Carlo Mazzone added, "Well done Capello! I've always said the same thing off the record, as staying down has now become a tactic."

Nedved skips Lazio clash

Football Italia

It's confirmed Pavel Nedved will not be able to face his former Lazio teammates as a bout of flu has floored the Juventus star. The European Player of the Year 2003 has been suffering from the virus for the last few days and skipped training, but today it became clear he would not recover in time for Sunday's afternoon kick-off.

"I spoke to Pavel today and he assured me there was no way he could help the team in his current condition," revealed Coach Fabio Capello. "I have a choice between Olivier Kapo and Ruben Olivera for that position, while we are also boosted by the return from injury of Alessandro Del Piero."

Uruguayan Olivera is the favourite to take over that wide left midfield role, while captain Del Piero should start alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic. There could be another change in the centre, where Manuele Blasi and Alessio Tacchinardi bid to partner former Roma star Emerson.

Gianluca Zambrotta has only missed out on one Serie A game this season, the 3-0 win over Chievo, but insists he is not running out of steam.

"It did me good to sit out that tie and the international friendly against Finland," revealed the Italy fullback. "I had a rest and am on form, just like the whole Juve squad. We threw away two points at Inter, but watched the videotape back and have learned from our mistakes."

Zambrotta was not among the 50 players nominated for the Balon d'Or despite his remarkable consistency in Serie A and the Champions' League, but he is happy just to fight for team trophies.

"This is without doubt the strongest Juventus side I have played in, and certainly the most complete when you look at the alternatives in every position. It's a challenge between this line-up and the one I first arrived in with Pippo Inzaghi, Del Piero and Zinedine Zidane."

Juventus squad:

Gk: 1 Buffon, 12 Chimenti, 22 Bonnefoi

D: 2 Ferrara, 4 Montero, 7 Pessotto, 15 Birindelli, 19 Zambrotta, 21 Thuram, 27 Zebina, 28 Cannavaro

M: 3 Tacchinardi, 8 Emerson, 16 Camoranesi, 18 Appiah, 20 Blasi, 23 Kapo, 24 Olivera

F: 9 Ibrahimovic, 10 Del Piero, 25 Zalayeta

Juventus fight off Real Madrid for Buffon

Tribal Football

Juventus are resisting all efforts from Real Madrid to sign their goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. The Italy international is being lined up by Real president Florentino Perez as a replacement for contract rebel Iker Casillas.

Buffon has been a long-term target for Perez, who he regards as the best shot-stopper in the world. The Italian's Juve contract runs to 2009 and director general Luciano Moggi insisted yesterday: "He is not for sale. Not at any price."

Juventus interested in Bonanni

Yahoo! Italia Sport

Juventus are interested in Vicenza youngster Massimo Bonanni, who has been scouted since Marcello Lippi was in charge. The bianconeri want to acquire the midfielder then loan him to Fiorentina in a swap to regain Giogio Chiellini, whom they loaned to Fiorentina on half-ownership.

Price set for Chelsea, Barcelona target Bojinov

Tribal Football

Lecce have told interested clubs that striker Valeri Bojinov can be signed for £10 million. The 18 year-old Bulgarian, a target for Chelsea and Barcelona, signed a new contract to 2009 on Thursday, which includes a new buy-out clause.

"I am very happy as I got everything I asked for in the contract," he said. "Lecce are obliged to accept an offer from anybody who bids £10 million."

Zambrotta: "My most complete Juve"

Juventus.com

"This Juventus squad is one of the strongest Juve squads of all time. During my first year here, it was also a very competitive squad with (Zinedine) Zidane and (Filippo) Inzaghi, and that squad won two Scudetti and two Supercoppas.

"Therefore, compared to that squad, we are more complete because we have alternatives in all areas of the team."

So says Gianluca Zambrotta, one that, in bianconero, has gained a lot of experience and has seen to parade fior of champions. The Juve under Capello is built in order to win and when matches like the previous match in San Siro happen, it wants to cancel them in a hurry.

"We have analyzed the game against Inter. There is disappointment because we have thrown away two important points, letting in two goals in the last 15 minutes. We were mistaken in not trying to close the game when we were 2-0 up, but we have understood our errors and will not repeat them."

The bianconeri wants to return to winning ways, beginning on Sunday against visitors Lazio.

"We want to begin the game against Milan with the maximum possible advantage. At the very least we must maintain the four-point advantage, and if possible, increase them. In order to succeed we must start by winning against Lazio."

Camoranesi keeps cool

Football Italia

Juventus winger Mauro Camoranesi is keeping his feet on the ground despite the praise he's receiving. Some are suggesting that the midfielder has never played so well for his club but the Italian isn't taking much notice.

"I don't know whether this is my best moment and I'm not thinking about it to be honest," he stated. "All I know is that I am happy to be of some use to a side that is doing very well at this moment in time."

Juventus, who are currently top of the table, are next in action against Lazio following the 2-2 draw with Inter.

"It wasn't great to give away a two goal lead but the Inter game is part of the past now," added the Argentine-born star. "We must forget that match and think about Lazio. We're keen to beat them after losing the Coppa Italia to the capital side last season."

Alex Del Piero may return to the starting line-up against the Biancocelesti after recovering from injury. However, Pavel Nedved may not face his former club. The Czech didn't train on Thursday and is a doubt for the weekend.

Nedved doubtful for Lazio match

Yahoo! Italia Sport

Juventus playmaker Pavel Nedved is down with the fever and is rated doubtful to play against the Lazio. The Czech seems being predestined not to play against his former employers. Until now Nedved has only played once against the biancocelesti, a victory in Stadio Delle Alpi for the bianconeri.

The midfielder is currently down with a virus, but a last decision will only be made before the match, with Olivier Kapo ready as replacement. Apart from Nedved, Tudor and Trezeguet, all the others were present in the training.

Juventus keep tabs on Ajax defender Heitinga

Tribal Football

Juventus are keeping tabs on Ajax defender John Heitinga. The 21 year-old is being considered by Juve director general Luciano Moggi for next season as he and coach Fabio Capello seek to overhaul the squad's defensive options.

With Mark Iuliano, Igor Tudor and Paolo Montero all on their way before the start of next season, Moggi and Capello are aware they need to bring in new defensive prospects. Top of the list is Heitinga, who has also been watched this season by AC Milan chief scout Cesare Maldini.

Iuliano rejects move to Lokotomiv Moscow

Yahoo! Italia Sport

Mark Iuliano is not interested in a move to Lokomotiv Moscow. Negotiations between the Juventus defender and the Russian team has been cancelled after the player rejected their contract offer. The bianconeri are looking to move Iuliano before his contract expires after this season.

Juventus stopper Tudor linked with Newcastle

Tribal Football

Juventus defender Igor Tudor has been linked with Newcastle United. The Croatia international has seen little first team action this season and came close to moving to the Premiership in the summer. Newcastle boss Graeme Souness must find £3 million if he wants to land Tudor in January.

Tevez To Corinthians

Goal.com

Boca Juniors president Maurcio Macri announced the conclusion of the deal this morning. 'The Timao' as Corinthians are known as in Brazil dished out 18 million Euros for the services of the Argentine national team striker. The contract binding Tevez to Corinthians will run up-until the 2006 World Cup.

Robinho assures Real Madrid despite Chelsea interest

Tribal Football

Robinho has moved to assure Real Madrid president Florentino Perez that he will join the Spanish giants. The Santos whiz is waiting on kidnappers to release his mother before the deal goes through, but all contracts are signed, with Santos - which own 60 per cent of his registration - having agreed a deal with Real Madrid.

There had been doubt over the move after Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich made his interest known both to Santos and Robinho. But as Abramovich's interference made headlines in Brazil, Robinho was on the phone to Perez assuring him that Real Madrid will be the club he joins after Santos.

Perez has offered Robinho a contract worth £1.4 million-a-year, while Abramovich is said to have tabled an offer worth closer to £3 million-a-year. But despite the Chelsea offer, Robinho wants a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
