Alex looking for fitness

Football Italia

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero is a doubt for Saturday's League game at lowly Siena. Although the player returned to action in the midweek win over Bayern Munich, he has hinted that he needs more time to recover.

"I've already told boss Fabio Capello that I won't play when I'm only 70 per cent fit," he informed La Stampa newspaper.

Del Piero has spent the last two weeks trying to recover from a problematic Achilles' tendon injury. However, he didn't impress many onlookers with his display in the 1-0 victory over the Germans.

"I wasn't that unfit as to not play in that match," he added. "I didn't want people to think that I was holding myself back. I'm a lot better physically now but I am still not 100 per cent fit and that is noticeable."

Del Piero is now being tipped to start on the bench in Tuscany, with Capello opting for a Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcelo Zalayeta strike pairing. Bianconeri fans will be hoping that the Italian can find some form quickly as David Trezeguet is out until January with injury.

Juve power impresses Zlatan

Football Italia

Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic admits he is surprised by how good his new teammates are.

"This squad really is very strong," he stated. "I'm shocked by the way in which we have dealt with difficulties, such as the loss of David Trezeguet and Alex Del Piero to injury. We will go far."

The Swedish international, who arrived on transfer deadline day in an £11m deal from Ajax, has begun his Bianconeri stint well.

"I'm starting to understand the difficulties of Italian football thanks to my teammates and the Coach," he continued. "Fabio Capello tells me how to play against Italian defences, underlining the importance of passing the ball quickly because opponents simply don't give you a chance to dwell on the ball over here."

Although Ibrahimovic has netted three goals in six Serie A games, the 22-year-old is impressing with his overall team play. Especially after serving up two assists for Pavel Nedved in the last two wins against Messina and Bayern Munich.

"Our understanding of each other is improving all of the time," noted the Euro 2004 star. "Nedved likes to run down the middle coming in from the left and I like to play one-touch football, it is a way of playing which suits us both."

Juventus stunned by Udinese's Jankulovski price

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi will attempt to sign Udinese midfielder Marek Jankulovski in January.

The Czech Republic international signed a new contract with Udinese this week, that ties him to the club until 2008. Juve had hoped Jankulovski's agreement would smooth the deal, but have been stunned by Udinese's opening price of £6 million for the player.

Meanwhile, Moggi has all but ruled out selling his four reserve defenders. Injury concerns over Paolo Montero and Igor Tudor has seen interest in the pair dry up, while Nicola Legrottaglie and Mark Iuliano have told Moggi they would prefer to stay and fight for their place.

Juve get Morientes warning

Football Italia

Juventus' chances of signing Fernando Morientes look slim after Real Madrid insisted he wasn't for sale.

Although the striker has been strongly linked with Liverpool, the Turin giants were also associated given the injury to David Trezeguet. Yet Real Madrid have today maintained that the Spaniard will not be released during the January transfer window.

"The player is not available," read a club statement. "The recent newspaper stories claiming otherwise are false. The club would like to make clear that the player is an important figure here who is happy to remain for the immediate future."

Morientes was linked with a switch as he struggles to get a regular game at Real with Ronaldo, Raul and Michael Owen all at the club. The international, who Juve boss Fabio Capello highly rates, returned to Madrid in the summer after a successful loan period at Monaco.

The Bianconeri may still buy a new forward in the New Year given that they only have four strikers on their books.

Sensi to dump Cassano?

Football Italia

Roma President Franco Sensi has cast doubt on the capital future of starlet Antonio Cassano. Reports had suggested talks regarding a new contract had begun given that his present deal expires in 2006. But the capital chief has fuelled speculation that the 22-year-old could be sold at the end of this season.

"I don't know whether I will keep him," stated Sensi. "There are a number of issues which are not helping. They are not problems to do with finances but those to do with his character. I also wasn't impressed with his performance at Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday."

Cassano is somewhat of an enigma in the Italian game. Despite his undoubted quality as a player, his hot temper has landed him in trouble on a number of occasions.

"Things can't go on like this, also because he is very expensive," added Sensi. "I give him £3m a season but I don't know if I want to keep giving him that. Nevertheless, he hasn't asked for anything and I haven't offered him anything."

Sensi is no stranger to making this sort of outburst even if it is unclear at this stage what his real motives are. He could really be thinking of selling or just trying to fire up the international who has yet to hit top form this term.

Should Cassano quit the Stadio Olimpico then there are a host of clubs interested in his services. Milan and Juventus recently 'invited' the player to consider joining them, even if Real Madrid and Chelsea could also be very keen.

Betis play down Joaquin approach by Real Madrid supremo

Tribal Football

A Real Betis official has played down reports of a meeting between Joaquin and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez on Saturday night. Perez was spotted in conversation with Joaquin after the 1-1 draw in Seville, but a club spokesman insisted: "The conversation lasted less than 20 seconds.

"Perez asked to see Joaquin and there was no problem. He did say 'You must join us. I want you with us'. But there was nothing to concern us."

Conte rejects Lecce option

Football Italia

Antonio Conte has turned down the chance to resume his career at the club where it started. Lecce yesterday revealed that they wanted the 35-year-old who was available with immediate effect. But the veteran, whose Juventus contract expired in the summer, says he's played his last game as a professional.

"I've decided to hang up my boots and start training to become a Coach," said the 1994 World Cup player.

However, it seems that Conte's proposed capture wasn't welcome by some fans despite the fact that he was born in the city. A banner unveiled at the club's training ground read: 'We don't want Conte.'

Boss Zdenek Zeman also didn't seem too enthusiastic. "If the club has opened talks with him then they will have good reason," he said. "But I won't talk about Conte now."

It would have been interesting to see how the two men would have got on given Zeman's infamous attacks on Juventus over the last decade.

Preview: Siena - Juventus

Football Italia

Italian giants Juventus will be confident of maintaining their lead at the top of the table as they travel to Siena in Week 7. Although the Tuscan side collected an impressive 0-0 draw at Fiorentina last week, Juventus have won all of their away games so far this season.

Boss Fabio Capello should make few changes to his starting XI with only a question mark remaining over who to field in attack. David Trezeguet is out until the New Year so Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alex Del Piero and the in-form Marcelo Zalayeta are in competition for just two places.

Del Piero should be available for selection after sitting out the last two weeks in an attempt to resolve a problematic Achilles' tendon injury. Juve will need him to return to his highest levels if they plan to cope without Trezeguet's goals for the next three months.

Siena boss Gigi Simoni has a number of issues to resolve before the Turin giants come to town. Star man Rodrigo Taddei has still not been reintegrated back into the squad after a contract dispute. Colonnese, Manninger, Mignani and Di Donato are all on the treatment table.

Siena (probable): Fortin; Cirillo, Portanova, Argilli, Falsini; Nicola, Pecchia, Ardito, Vergassola; Graffiedi, Flo

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Blasi, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Del Piero

Nedved: I'll win then quit

Football Italia

Pavel Nedved has confirmed that he intends to retire in 2006 – but wants to win the European Cup first. The Czech ace is back to his brilliant best but has ruled out the possibility of extending his playing days.

"I'm not getting any younger," said the 32-year-old. "I plan to stop playing when my contract expires and I don't think I'll change my mind. It isn't easy to play every three games at this level but in the next two years I will give my all for Juventus."

Nedved has won numerous honours with the Bianconeri but he's keen to net the Champions' League after missing the 2003 Final, which Juve lost to Milan, through suspension.

He's definitely helped his side's cause as two of their three victories so far have been achieved thanks to his goals in the victories over Ajax and now Bayern Munich.

"I could even retire at the end of this season if we win the trophy in May," joked the midfield ace.

Nedved is fully committed to Juventus after he opted to retire from international football, a decision criticised by Lecce boss Zdenek Zeman.

"I have great respect for him," replied Nedved. "All I will say is that I'm happy that I made the choice rather than just being left out of future squads."

The former Lazio star has also thanked teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his second assist in two games last night.

"He tells me that I should be setting up goals for him and not vice-versa," continued the Golden Ball winner. "He's right but I just look to help out the attackers in any way that I can."

Comeback delights Del Piero

Football Italia

Alessandro Del Piero says he's content with his display in the 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on Tuesday. The Italian returned to the team last night after spending the last 15 days on the sidelines with an Achilles' tendon problem.

The No 10, who was replaced after an hour, didn't really shine but believes the evening was a positive. "I'm happy to be available again," said the Azzurri ace. "It was just important to not feel any pain. Now we'll have to see how I feel on Wednesday.

"My substitution? It was as a result of my fitness. I agree with the decisions of the Coach who is well aware that there are plenty of games to come."

Boss Fabio Capello will now have to decide whether to start with Alex on Saturday at Siena. Although Del Piero is available again, Capello opted to drop in-form Marcelo Zalayeta last night despite scoring in his last two games.

Whispers on Wednesday suggest that the tactician could now rest Ibrahimovic, despite his good form, for the trip to Tuscany.

Zlatan still suffering with back

Planet Football

Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still struggling to shake off his back problem. The Swedish international has been troubled with the problem since aggravating the injury on international duty last week. Ibrahimovic has been unable to train with the injury, but he has still been able to play in games.

"I'm only playing games at the moment, I'm not training," Ibrahimovic told SportExpressen. "I get treatment every day and it is getting better."

Ibrahimovic helped set up with the winning goal against Bayern Munich on Tuesday for Pavel Nedved and he feels he is building up a good relationship with the Czech star.

"We understand each other better and better," added Ibrahimovic. "Nedved likes to run it down the middle coming in from the left and I play with one-touch a lot, it's a way of playing that suits us both."

Juventus content with win

Planet Football

Juventus acquired their third consecutive win in the UEFA Champions League placing them top of Group C. The 1-0 triumph over Bayern Munich at Stadio Delle Alpi puts three points between the two clubs.

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero provided a welcome return for the home crowd following his injury, but it was midfield ace Pavel Nedved who broke the deadlock.

"I'm happy for the team's result," said the 32-year-old Czech. "It was a difficult match. It wasn't easy to find a goal. But we played well on the occasion, (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic was especially good. We are on the right track, but lets see at the end."

Juventus coach Fabio Capello was also positive about his squad's performance.

"It was a really difficult match because our opponents were really tight," reflected Capello. "In my opinion this was a really important result against a really good team. We put together more chances than Bayern. As for Ibrahimovic, he's growing match by match. But I have to say I was pleased with the whole team."

Zambrotta and Blasi comments

Juventus.com

Gianluca Zambrotta, although satisfied with the victory against Bayern Munich, doesn't want to hear about an already conquered qualification.

"During the first half we've created important scoring occasions but we were unable to finish them. Luckily the goal scored by Nedved finally helped us achieve a very important win.

"We're on top of Group C but we've played only 3 matches. We still have to hold on tight."

Manuele Blasi agrees that it's still a long, although difficult, way ahead. He said: "Having 9 points certainly makes us confident but it's not over yet. We have to continue playing like this, without conceding goals and creating dangerous occasions.

"That's what we've done so far, even against a giant like Bayern and cannot but feel satisfied."

Juve ponder Bonera bid

Football Italia

Juventus have admitted that they are interested in signing Parma stopper Daniele Bonera. Bonera is just 23-years-old and is being tipped for a great future at domestic and international level. Transfer guru Luciano Moggi has ruled out a January bid but hinted that a summer one may occur.

"I don't think we will sign anyone in the New Year," stated the club's director general. "But we could think about him at the end of the season. Bonera is a very interesting youngster who has already shown people his worth in the game recently."

The defender was heavily associated with a switch to Turin last summer but no move took place as Juve opted to sign Fabio Cannavaro instead.

Bonera is now an established Italian international after he graduated from the Under-21 set-up. The player was brought up through the Brescia youth system and can play either as a right-back or as a central defender.

Juventus to pounce as Jankulovski signs Udinese extension

Tribal Football

Udinese have secured midfielder Marek Jankulovski to a new contract extension. After months of negotiations, Udinese confirmed yesterday that the Czech Republic international had extended his deal to keep him with the club until 2008.

The deal was struck on the understanding that Udinese would not block Jankulovski's dream move to Juventus should the Turin giants come in for him. Udinese feared losing Jankulovski on a Bosman and so insisted he extend his deal.

Along with Juve, where director general Luciano Moggi has declared he wants to sign the midfielder, Tottenham have also registered their interest in Jankulovski.

Juventus, Atletico Madrid keep tabs on Chelsea's Mutu

Tribal Football

Juventus and Atletico Madrid are monitoring Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu's situation. Both clubs were keen to discuss a winter market deal for the Romania international before this week's drug revelations. However, they are still interested and if Mutu can escape a ban, will move for the player in January.

Mutu is expected to be shown the door by Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who reportedly tipped off drug testers about the striker.

Boniperti Impressed With Capello's Juve

Goal.com

Juventus might not be playing spectacular football, but the solidity of the team has impressed many people, including former player and president, Giampiero Boniperti.

"I like this Juve a lot because it's strong and plays well," declared Boniperti. "Capello immediately understood the Juve mentality."

The former 70s and 80s bianconero president was back at the stadium on Tuesday night after a long absence, despite not really liking the Delle Alpi stadium.

"I'm feeling younger and I want to enjoy a bit of football from the stands, even though I don't like the Delle Alpi stadium."

Juventus are in fact planning on building a new stadium which will be named after Giovanni Agnelli, a friend of Boniperti, who died nearly 2 years ago, followed by the death of his brother, Umberto, in summer of this year.

"It's not just me who misses them. They are missed by Turin, Juventus and Italy and maybe even by the whole world."

Lecce want Conte return

Football Italia

Veteran midfielder Antonio Conte could continue his playing career with home town club Lecce. The 35-year-old is available with immediate effect after his contract at Juventus expired in the summer. Now Lecce are keen to sign the former international, who spent six years at the Via del Mare until his 1991 switch to the Bianconeri.

"There is a desire to bring in Conte," revealed Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino. "We think it would be gratifying for him to end his career where it all started."

Reports suggest that boss Zdenek Zeman wants the player in a bid to help out his young squad - whose average age is just 23.

"Negotiations are taking place," added Corvino. "I have spoken with Zeman and we are awaiting an answer. He could certainly help us in our bid to escape relegation. He is still doing a few things for Juventus right now but we are waiting for him."

China cancel Azzurri clash

Football Italia

The Azzurri are looking for another opponent after China cancelled their planned November 19 friendly. Italy were set to play in the Far Eastern country for the first time ever next month in a test match, but the game has been called off at late notice.

China are currently involved in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers and could need this time to prepare for a clash against Hong Kong. The Italian FIGC is now looking for another opponent that can play Marcello Lippi's squad during the Serie A break for international duty around November 17.

Nedved scores as Juventus win 1-0 against Bayern Munich

Pavel Nedved's strike sank Bayern Munich and ensured Juventus maintain their 100 per cent record in the Champions' League with three consecutive 1-0 wins.

Alessandro Del Piero returned from three weeks out with a tendon problem to wear the captain's armband in this top of the table clash. The German giants share the leadership of this Group as both teams had a 100 per cent record going into the Stadio Delle Alpi. Zlatan Ibrahimovic retained his spot following the injury to David Trezeguet's shoulder.

Bayern boss Felix Magath is a familiar figure to Juve fans, as he scored the winning goal in the 1983 European Cup Final for Hamburg.

The home side had the first glorious opportunity after seven minutes when Gianluca Zambrotta charged down the left flank and floated in a cross for the head of Ibrahimovic, but the Swede somehow ballooned it over the bar from seven yards.

Soon after, Jonathan Zebina pushed forward and his intelligent through ball found Del Piero, but the finish was extremely weak and straight into the arms of Oliver Kahn.

However, there was panic in the Juve area after 23 minutes when Lilian Thuram was distracted and allowed Roy Makaay to sprint past him. Gianluigi Buffon rushed off his line to slow him down, but it took a Zebina goalline clearance to prevent the Dutchman from scoring.

Ibrahimovic wasted another good chance when he went for glory instead of cutting back for the totally unmarked Del Piero.

There was tension at the dawn of the second half when Torsten Frings escaped without a booking after a late challenge on Zebina, then Kahn was angry with Pavel Nedved when the two went for the same cross and collided.

Kahn nearly gifted Juventus with a goal moments later. Emerson's deflected effort seemed harmless, but the veteran goalkeeper fumbled and Del Piero somehow fired wide of the target from six yards.

Bayern's best move of the game arrived on the hour mark, as Thuram, Zebina and then Zambrotta performed crucial tackles on Salihamidzic, Frings and Makaay in quick succession.

Del Piero left the field after an hour and made way for Marcelo Zalayeta - a planned substitution in his first match since September 25. Zalayeta's opening chance was a glancing header on Mauro Camoranesi's free kick.

Zambrotta's challenge on Schweinsteiger prevented a tricky situation and moments later Juventus broke the deadlock. Ibrahimovic held up a searching Thuram pass for Pavel Nedved's control and accurate left-foot finish.

Bayern hit back immediately and Buffon did well to fingertip Schweinsteiger's rising drive over the bar from close range, then a free kick took everyone by surprise and the goalkeeper was able to clear at the far post. From the resulting corner Salihamidzic incredibly nodded wide from four yards.

Ibrahimovic was all set to make it 2-0 when he hooked a wayward pass with a delightful first touch, but the chip was just off target with Kahn beaten.

Capello: Defence key to Euro glory

Football Italia

Fabio Capello's Juve is marching on in Europe with three 1-0 wins on the trot and he maintains solidity is crucial to conquering this competition.

"It was a tough game without much room as Bayern Munich had one striker, so it was an extremely important result," said the Coach after this crucial victory. "We had a few more chances than the Germans and everyone put in a lot of effort and humility to fight for the win."

Juventus were a disaster in defence last season, but so far in the Champions' League proper they are yet to concede a single goal.

"The truth of football is that you win if you don't concede and it's not as if we didn't create chances to score – we had far more than Bayern. Michael Ballack and Roy Makaay ran like crazy tonight as they really wanted the victory, but we were solid and took our opportunities."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was brought in as a target man, but is making his mark as a team player as well.

"Ibrahimovic is improving with every game and for the last two matches he has provided Pavel Nedved with an assist, but I liked everyone tonight as Bayern are a tough nut to crack."

However, Capello is rarely completely content with a performance and had a few pointers for the Swede.

"I was a little angry when Ibrahimovic could have set up Nedved on the counter-attack only to mis-place his pass. That for me was the worst mistake of the entire match."

The Bianconeri are now three points clear at the top of the table, but Ajax's 3-0 win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv leaves Capello with a few doubts.

"We aren't qualified yet, but the next match in Munich will be decisive if, as predicted, Ajax win in Tel Aviv. Nonetheless, having three points more than Bayern is a comforting prospect for the moment."

Pavel Nedved scored the winner with 15 minutes to go and was also hesitant to discuss reaching the Final.

"The difference from last season will only show in May," said the Balon d'Or winner, "as we also started well last year. All we can do is keep working hard and try to improve with every game."

Trez surgery a success

Football Italia

Juventus striker David Trezeguet has today been operated on in a bid to resolve a shoulder problem. The Frenchman went under the knife at 7.30 am, in Lyon, and doctors are happy that the 45-minute procedure was a success. The operation was carried out by professor Gilles Walch in the Sainte Anne Lumiere clinic.

Juventus have revealed that the 27-year-old, who has already netted seven goals this term, will start a rehabilitation programme in Lyon tomorrow. Trezeguet is then expected to head back to Turin next week where he will continue his treatment.

The Old Lady of Italian football remain confident that he will be at the full disposal of Coach Fabio Capello within three months.

Juventus chief: We'll talk to Parma's Bonera

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has ruled out a January move for Parma fullback Daniele Bonera. The right-back is keen on a move to Juve, but Moggi said: "I don't believe we will sign the right-sided defender in January. I can't see that happening.

"But when the season finishes we will definitely speak. He's an interesting young person who has already demonstrated his value."

Juventus in talks with Lazio over Inzaghi

Tribal Football

Juventus have begun talks with Lazio over three of their players. Despite his claims last week that Juve wouldn't be seeking a new striker after David Trezeguet's injury, director general Luciano Moggi is in discussions with Lazio over Simone Inzaghi.

Whether he can prise Inzaghi away in January is another matter, with Lazio president Claudio Lotito having just secured him to a new contract - with a promise of a job waiting for him after he retires.

However, Moggi will also be enquiring after Inzaghi's teammates Cesar and Massimo Oddo, with both fullbacks serious defensive targets for Juve coach Fabio Capello.

Marek pens new Udinese deal

Football Italia

The months of transfer speculation seem to be at an end after Marek Jankulovski extended his contract with Udinese. The Czech Republic star has been heavily linked with moves to Juventus and Inter for over a year, and even rejected a switch to CSKA Moscow this summer after the two clubs had already agreed terms.

It was widely predicted he would leave the Stadio Friuli during the January transfer window, but that now seems to be unlikely. His new contract will tie Jankulovski to the club until June 30 2008, an extra two years on top of his previous deal.

The 27-year-old has been in Serie A since 2000, at first with the Napoli shirt and then moving on to Udinese in the summer of 2002.

Atletico Madrid want more info on Tevez

Tribal Football

Atletico Madrid have requested more information on Boca Juniors striker Carlos Tevez. The Argentina international is a top target for Atletico chiefs, which have been speaking with Boca about the young striker since the end of last season.

Atletico sports chief Toni Munoz sees Tevez as the ideal strike-partner for captain Fernando Torres, but his board won't give him the green light to bid for the youngster until they have a detailed report of his medical history and family background.

Barcelona's Puyol interested in AC Milan

Tribal Football

Barcelona defender Carles Puyol has admitted if he was ever to move to Italy he would want to play for AC Milan. "If ever I left Barcelona and were to play in Italy," said Puyol, "my favoured destination would definitely be AC Milan."

The Spanish international is highly admired by Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani, but any future move would have to be done with Barcelona's permission. Puyol's contract has a buyout clause set at £120 million - which effectively has taken him off the market.

Tuesday 19 October

Juventus v Bayern Munich: Preview

ESPN Soccernet

Juventus can claim sole possession of top spot in Champions League Group G on Tuesday night although coach Fabio Capello knows beating Bayern Munich at the Delle Alpi will be far from straightforward.

The two clubs are currently level at the head of the standings after both won their opening two games. And another success on Tuesday would all but seal progression for either side.

"This is a very important game," said Capello. "It's the game that could reduce the pressure and place us one step away from qualifying to the next round."

Surprisingly for two clubs with such rich European traditions, it is the first time that Juve and Bayern will have met in a competitive fixture. But Juve can take heart from a record of just three defeats in 15 previous encounters against German opposition.

Bayern are not ordinary opponents, however, as Capello concedes.

"They are a team that may have had some problems in the domestic competition but they have been outstanding in the Champions League," added the former AC Milan boss.

Juve may have a 100% record in this season's Champions League but they have been less than impressive in scraping out narrow 1-0 wins against Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Turin club's success has been built on a solid defence although that will be tested to the full when faced by Bayern's Dutch international Roy Makaay.

"Makaay is fantastic in front of goal," said Capello. "Bayern have a strong offensive line and we will have to be careful."

Juve, who beat Messina 2-1 on Saturday, could have Alessandro Del Piero back from injury although the club captain may have to settle for a place on the bench as Capello is set to stick with a strike duo of Marcelo Zalayeta and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Midfielder Mauro Camoranesi, who missed the weekend's game due to injury, will return to the starting X1.

Bayern, who lost at home to Schalke on Saturday, have problems up front with coach Felix Magath struggling to find a partner for the prolific Makaay. Vahid Hashemian is favourite as the Iranian has shrugged off an ankle injury while Claudio Pizarro is still sidelined.

Magath confirmed Pizarro, who has a back problem, has little chance of playing on Tuesday.

"I don't believe he'll make it, and even if he's on the plane, there has to be a huge question mark over his ability to play," said the former Stuttgart boss.

If Magath decides to go with a more cautious formation, Makaay will play as a lone striker with Michael Ballack breaking from deep. One piece of good news for the visitors is that Ze Roberto will be available for selection after missing the Schalke defeat having represented Brazil in midweek.

Juventus have Del doubt

Football Italia

Alex Del Piero is in the Juventus squad to face Bayern Munich but he remains a doubt for the game. The captain has spent the last 15 days on the sidelines in an attempt to cure an Achilles' tendon problem. Boss Fabio Capello has included him in his plans for the Champions' League tie but he's unsure whether the Italian will be available.

"Del Piero has been called-up for Tuesday's match but a decision on his use will be made in the morning," said the tactician. "It all depends on how the night passes. If he says he's ready to play then he'll probably start the game, even if I doubt that he will be able to complete 90 minutes."

With or without Alex, Juventus know that they are in for a tough game against the German giants.

"They are a side who have a few problems domestically but are doing very well in the Champions' League," added Capello. "I would say that they are more difficult to face on their travels rather than in Munich. They wait for sides to attack them and then hit on the counter.

"They also have an attacker in Makaay who is very good at finishing off the work of his teammates."

Bayern, who have arrived in Turin without Pizarro and Hargreaves, are joint top of the group with Juventus as both sides have won their two games so far. Juve will again be unable to count on David Trezeguet, who will have shoulder surgery in France on Tuesday.

"He is deadly in front of goal but we have other players who can do well, even if they don't have his characteristics," added Capello. "We are doing fine though even without Del Piero and Trezeguet because my side has found a certain balance.

"I also have Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is adapting well to the Italian game. Don't forget that it took Zinedine Zidane four months, while I'm happy with Marcelo Zalayeta."

Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Blasi, Emerson, Nedved; Del Piero (Zalayeta), Ibrahimovic

Juve hail Coach Capello

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello has been praised by the club following their impressive start to the season.

"We knew him well and were certain that he would bring out the best in our players," Vice-president Roberto Bettega told Tuttosport. "The fact that we started the season before anyone else, given our Champions' League involvement, gave him more time to figure things out."

Capello was surprisingly appointed by the Turin giants after Marcello Lippi left to wait for the Azzurri call.

Juventus are currently the League leaders after picking up 16 points from six games, in which they have conceded just two goals. However, there could be a few problems around the corner given that David Trezeguet will have shoulder surgery on Tuesday.

"We couldn't predict his injury, if we had then we wouldn't have sold Fabrizio Miccoli to Fiorentina," added the Juventus legend. "But we are certain that Trezeguet will be back to full fitness in January."

In the Frenchman's absence, the fans are expecting Alessandro Del Piero and Marcelo Zalayeta to deliver.

"We still have great faith in Del Piero," continued Bettega. "He should just remain calm and the rest will follow. Zalayeta? He can adapt to certain situations and we shouldn't forget what he has done for this club in the past."

Del Piero is now back in training after injury and could feature in Tuesday's Champions' League clash against Bayern Munich.

Real Madrid ready to flog Morientes

Tribal Football

Real Madrid are ready to open the door to negotiations over a January move for striker Fernando Morientes. Confusion stands over whether FIFA's transfer rules will allow Morientes to leave Real midseason due to his return from a 12-month stint at AS Monaco over the summer.

Liverpool and Juventus head the queue of clubs chasing the Spanish international, who is now prepared to leave the Santiago Bernabeu for regular first team action.

Everything has turned sour for Morientes since Jose Antonio Camacho's resignation and Real management are prepared to release him with Ronaldo, Michael Owen, Raul and the possible return of Javier Portillo from his loan with Fiorentina all top class attacking options for coach Mariano Garcia Remon.

Real Madrid supremo in Joaquin talks

Tribal Football

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was spotted in conversation with Betis ace Joaquin after Saturday's 1-1 draw. Winger Joaquin has been a long-term target for Perez and AS says the Real supremo joked with the Spanish international: "We'll have to see when you come and join us."

Perez sees the youngster as a successor to Luis Figo on the right-side of Real's midfield and the fact that no new contract offer has been made to the Portuguese veteran suggests Real are preparing a change.

PSV admit Tevez defeat

Planet Football

PSV Eindhoven boss Guus Hiddink has ruled out the possibility of Argentine superstar Carlos Tevez heading to the Philips Stadion. The Dutch club are regular raiders on South America in search of rough diamonds and they have been persistently linked with a move for Tevez.

The fire was fuelled recently when Hiddink headed to the Southern Hemisphere on a scouting mission which saw him take in a number of games.

Hiddink, who is also looking at the possibility of lining up a cooperation agreement with a South American club, had a brief chat with Tevez before ruling out the possibility of the Boca Juniors ace heading to the Philips Stadion.

"I saw him at work during a Boca game and afterwards we had a brief conversation," Hiddink told PSV's website about Tevez. "But the chance that he will make a move to PSV is negligible. He belongs to a category of players that PSV cannot realistically afford to attract. The price is far too high."

Hiddink confirmed the club are talking to Argentine giants River Plate about the possibility of striking an agreement. "River are a big club; they are anxious to keep in touch with us intensively," he added. "That's what we have discussed with their manager."

PSV could be involved in a number of transfers during the winter transfer window, with Johann Vogel one player being linked with a move away from the club. The Swiss midfielder is being strongly linked with Wolfsburg, but Hiddink was unfazed by all the talk of transfers.

"You will always have to deal with the so-called 'transfer window'; anything might happen," he admitted. "I want to be prepared when contracts expire. That's why I have made a lot of contacts."

No PSV bid for Robinho

Planet Football

Brazilian side Santos have insisted no bid has been tabled by PSV Eindhoven for Robinho. PSV have been linked with a whole host of South American talents in recent weeks and the fire was fuelled recently when coach Guus Hiddink headed to the region on a busman's holiday.

He held talks with a number of clubs on a range of subjects and the media suggested Robinho was the topic on the agenda with Santos. Santos, though, have played down the prospect of the Chelsea target leaving before the 2006 World Cup.

"There isn't any official offer," said Santos president Marcelo Texeira. "Of course there is always interest because Robinho is a very good player but at the moment he only has his mind on the Brazilian Championship and the Copa Sudamericana.

"I am sure that we are not going to negotiate in this moment for Robinho. We have renewed Robinho's contract until 2008 because we are grateful for what he is giving to this club and we expect to count on him in 2005 as well.

"It is clear that we can't compete with a European offer but I can assure all that at the moment there isn't any official offer for him. We had a conversation with the player and he is calm."

Capello praise for Juve

Planet Football

Juventus coach Fabio Capello was delighted with his side's 2-1 win against this season's surprise package Messina. Messina have already beaten Roma and Milan this term, but stand out displays from Marcelo Zalayeta and Zlatan Ibrahimovic buoyed Juve to victory.

"I think Ibrahimovic and Zalayeta played superbly against a team in for," said Capello. "We have to give Messina praise for playing their normal open game and they did cause us problems. Let's say that Messina deserve their league placing.

"We are not looking to sign anyone. We will get Alessandro Del Piero who should be back on Tuesday. Ibrahimovic, Zalayeta and Pavel Nedved can all play up front, and (Olivier) Kapo too.

"The big teams are not selling their players but if someone becomes available? They have to be good players who are able to make a difference."

Trezeguet's shoulder surgery

Planet Football

David Trezeguet has returned to France to undergo shoulder surgery. The Juventus striker is top scorer at the club who are currently leading Serie A. However, chronic shoulder trouble will force the 27-year-old Frenchman to be out of action for several months.

The £14 million signing from Monaco decided to go back to his native France for treatment.

"I chose to do it at Lyon because there is an excellent specialist there," Trezeguet states. "Then I will start rehabilitation, to be fit to play again in February for the major encounters both in the national league and the Champions League.

"I didn't undergo surgery last summer because I did not think it was necessary."

Zalayeta to take his chance

Planet Football

Marcelo Zalayeta insists he can replace injured Juventus striker David Trezeguet. The Uruguayan marksman is standing in for Trezeguet who will be out for the next four months after undergoing shoulder surgery.

Zalayeta scored against Messina in a 2-1 win for Juve to keep them at the top of Serie A, and he says that he will take his chance of replacing Trezeguet.

"In this period I have a big chance and I have to take advantage of it," said Zalayeta. "My job will be playing in a good way and scoring."

Zalayeta is playing for a longer stay in Turin, and knows that he will have ample opportunity to impress Fabio Capello with Trezeguet's long-term injury.

Juventus linked with Messina's Zoro

Tribal Football

Juventus have been linked with Messina midfielder Marco Zoro. The young Ivory Coast international has also caught the interest of Arsenal scouts after helping Messina to second in the table this season.

Juve are keen on the 20 year-old, with director general Luciano Moggi impressed by Zoro's battling qualities after the way he fought back from a difficult period at Salernitana.

Messina's Parisi wants Juventus over Valencia

Tribal Football

Messina captain Alessandro Parisi has declared he wants a move to Juventus. The subject of a £5 million bid from Valencia, Parisi is also being scouted by Manchester United. But its Juve he has his heart set on.

"I am a Juventino, to play one day with the Bianconeri would be a dream," declared Parisi before Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Juve.

Juve have a strong relationship with Messina and director general Luciano Moggi has already begun tentative talks over a close-season deal for the left-sided winger.

Barcelona chiefs in dispute over Tacchinardi, Dacourt

Tribal Football

Barcelona president Joan Laporta and coach Frank Rijkaard are in dispute over their January transfer market plans. Both men are in agreement that a new midfielder must be signed when the winter window opens. But Laporta wants AS Roma star Ollie Dacourt, while Rijkaard likes the versatility of Juventus' Alessio Tacchinardi.

Laporta will have the final say, however, with Roma to be approached first about Dacourt's availability before he turns to the Tacchinardi option.

Parma's Gilardino keen on AC Milan

Tribal Football

Parma striker Alberto Gilardino admits he is flattered to be linked with AC Milan. Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani refused to deny reports yesterday that they had struck personal terms with the young centre-forward ahead of a possible January agreement with Parma.

For his part, Gilardino admitted: "There have been five or six months of talk with my name linking me to this or to that great team. I have always said I would stay with Parma and here I have remained.

"The interest of Milan? There is no doubt, it is surely a beautiful thing."

Juventus 2 - 1 Messina

Football Italia

The scorers Nedved and Zalayeta Juventus celebrate Zalayeta's goal

Juve survived a late scare to end Messina's unbeaten record and stretch out a five-point lead at the top of the table. This was an unlikely choice for top of the table clash pre-season, but going into Week 6 newly promoted Messina were only two points behind the Bianconeri.

Juve were at the centre of an injury crisis with David Trezeguet out until January following shoulder surgery and Alessandro Del Piero still sidelined, but Mauro Camoranesi was able to recover from a bruised calf to start. This left just two strikers at Fabio Capello's disposal, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Uruguayan Marcelo Zalayeta.

7,000 Giallorossi fans made the trip up from Sicily for this game and both teams were unbeaten going in. The visitors had the first chance after three minutes when Gianluigi Buffon got down to palm Riccardo Zampagna's long-range strike round the post.

At the other end Marco Storari punched out a swinging Pavel Nedved free kick, then Camoranesi and Zalayeta combined before Emerson eventually fired it wide of the target. Zampagna had timid penalty appeals for a Jonathan Zebina shirt-tug waved away, but Messina were rarely dangerous.

Emerson won back the ball in midfield and set up Nedved for an angled drive that was parried, but Juve were beginning to take control.

That pressure paid off after 25 minutes when Camoranesi's cross from the right was nodded in by Marcelo Zalayeta. The Uruguayan has been a squad player for many years and often delivers when called upon, as he also scored the winner against Udinese last week.

A scuffle broke out on the stroke of half-time when Coppola claimed he had been struck by Nedved, but replays suggest any contact was purely accidental. The Czech tried to get back at Messina in the best possible way, as his fierce drive was palmed out with some difficulty.

Salvatore Sullo came on for the second half and within a minute he had placed a fine cross to the back post that almost took Buffon by surprise. Juve also had a great chance early on when Zalayeta fired Zebina's cross over the bar.

Arturo Di Napoli combined well with Parisi and fell under a challenge from Fabio Cannavaro, but his penalty appeals were waved away.

Within moments Juventus doubled their lead at the other end of the pitch. Zlatan Ibrahimovic pulled it back for Nedved to side-foot intelligently into the far corner of the net with his right foot.

Messina did not give in, as they had fought back from 3-1 down to Roma for a 4-3 victory, and got back into the match on 68 minutes with a splendid goal. Sullo's cross took both Cannavaro and Thuram by surprise, allowing Riccardo Zampagna to turn and volley past a helpless Buffon.

This was only the second Serie A goal Juventus have conceded this season after Cristian Zaccardo's effort for fellow Sicilians Palermo. Juve tried to put the win in the bag with a fine move that saw Nedved roll a cross in for Zalayeta, but his tap-in was splendidly smothered by a Storari reaction save.

It was his last contribution, as Zalayeta was replaced by Ruben Olivera, while Messina threw on Japanese international Atsushi Yanagisawa and ex-Juve man Nicola Amoruso.

Alessandro Parisi had a quiet game, but his venomous free kick was only kept out by the back of his own teammate Di Napoli. Soon after Zampagna hooked down the ball for Yanagisawa and the Japanese midfielder's finish was off target.

Nedved's powerful strike from distance was spilled by Storari, but there were no other Juve men there to take advantage. Buffon also had a scare when Amoruso nearly got on the end of Parisi's cross.

Juventus: Buffon; Zebina (Birindelli 56), Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Appiah (Blasi 81), Nedved; Zalayeta (Olivera 72), Ibrahimovic

Messina: Storari; Zoro, Conte (Sullo 46), Rezaei, Parisi; Giampà, Coppola, Donati (Yanagisawa 72), Zanchi; Zampagna, Di Napoli (Amoruso 78)

Capello shrugs off Sicilian challenge

Football Italia

Fabio Capello's Juventus side is unstoppable at the moment and he claims they have not been sorely tested yet.

"I preferred the first half performance," he commented after tonight's 2-1 win against second-placed Messina, "but overall I can't say we struggled in the slightest. We are playing good football and entertaining the fans."

The Bianconeri have now opened up a five-point lead at the top despite an injury crisis that left him with only two options upfront.

"Marcelo Zalayeta played very well," continued Capello, "moving around the field and making himself dangerous from a variety of positions. As for my choice of Stephen Appiah in midfield, I considered him the most suited to our opponents."

Messina were rarely dangerous in the first half, although they did stage a late fightback following Riccardo Zampagna's goal.

Rebel Mutu ready for Viola

Football Italia

Adrian Mutu has moved a step closer to a Serie A return for Juve or Fiorentina after reportedly walking out on Chelsea. He has been embroiled in a series of bitter bust-ups with manager Jose Mourinho since the summer and this week ignored his orders by playing for Romania in a World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic.

Mourinho also told the press on Friday that he couldn't be sure Mutu would ever play for Chelsea again, while reports today suggest he is in Italy for talks with potential buyers. The talented forward was among the top scorers in Serie A when he left Parma in a £15.8m deal last year, but injuries and personality clashes have seen him sidelined at Stamford Bridge.

His return to Italy has often been suggested and a summer move to Juventus crumbled in the final hours of the transfer window, when the Bianconeri opted for Ajax's Zlatan Ibrahimovic instead. That switch could be revived in January with their current injury crisis upfront, as David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero are out of action.

However, an even more likely destination would be Fiorentina, who look set to send Javier Portillo back to Real Madrid six months before his loan spell expires. Mutu was a confirmed target for the Viola management and President Diego Della Valle has more ready cash at his disposal than Juventus in the current financial climate.

Another surprise option could be Milan, who have only fielded Hernan Crespo - already on loan from Chelsea - for a handful of minutes this season due to several muscular injuries.

AC Milan sensation: Gilardino agrees personal terms

Tribal Football

AC Milan have agreed personal terms with Parma star Alberto Gilardino. Gazzetta dello Sport says Milan have agreed a contract with the Italian international worth an initial £700,000-a-year.

The Serie A champs will seek a transfer agreement with Parma in January to ward off rival interest from Real Madrid and Manchester Unietd. Milan are prepared to pay £15 million for the young striker.

Juventus v Messina: Preview

ESPN Soccernet

For a team that has climbed many mountains in order to return to Italy's top flight after a 44-year absence, there is no better reward than a date at Juventus.

Unbeaten Messina have already pulled off a giant-killing double by beating both AC Milan and Roma on their way to second place in the standings and the Sicilians will be dreaming of a hat-trick when they face the Serie A leaders.

"My players have discovered that even in Serie A, you play 11 against 11," was the explanation given by Giallorossi president Pietro Franza for his team's dream start to the campaign.

More than 10,000 Messina fans will travel to the north of Italy to witness what they hope will be their side taking top spot, with their heroes now only two points behind Juve.

"To have more than 8,000 fans supporting the team will be something new," said Franza. "In many respects, Messina are bottom of many tables but we have been able to change the atmosphere in the city.

"We are living an incredible dream considering that only one year ago we went through a very difficult time being in the last position in Serie B."

The man responsible for the team's revival, coach Bortolo Mutti, who guided the club to promotion, has been able to maintain the winning habit in spite of the team failing to make any big summer signings.

"We analysed the fact that many top-flight squads had made many changes to their teams without getting much in return," said Franza. "To maintain the unity of a group that has contributed to the team's successes in recent years is at times worth so much more than any big signing."

Their opponents, however, certainly expect to get their money's worth from their recent reinforcements - Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson.

With Juve's top striker David Trezeguet set to be out of action until February as he undergoes shoulder surgery, and with captain Alessandro Del Piero and midfielder Mauro Camoranesi also injured, there is even more pressure on the new arrivals to deliver.

"There is no reason why the club should return to the transfer market," said Trezeguet. "The club have made three fantastic signings and I believe they shouldn't worry - these players can help us win."

A victory on Saturday will provide a morale boost for Fabio Capello's men who face their most challenging Champions League clash next week when they host Bayern Munich.

But without goalscoring machine Trezeguet, whose seven goals have been an important factor in the Bianconeri's unbeaten run both in the league and Europe, Capello will be forced to play with attacking duo Marcelo Zalayeta and Ibrahimovic in the next few months.

It was Zalayeta's header against Udinese which allowed the Bianconeri to defend their lead at the top of Serie A. Capello can also take comfort from this weekend's opponents, who have scored just as many league goals as Juve (11) without any big name strikers.

But the absence of injured Brazilian midfielder Mamede could hinder Messina, who will also be without fellow middleman Luca Fusco, who is struggling with a problematic thigh. Attacking midfielder Ruben Oliveira is set to replace the injured Camoranesi in Juve's starting line-up.

Capello calls on the Z Factor

Football Italia

In the absence of his main strike partners, Fabio Capello hopes Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcelo Zalayeta can keep Juve on top of the table.

"Zalayeta has good technique, is excellent in the air and has a lot of potential," said the Coach. "He has always been ready when Juve have needed him and this is one of those times. We also have other options, as Olivier Kapo and Ruben Olivera can be used as a support striker."

David Trezeguet is out until January following shoulder surgery, while Alessandro Del Piero will make his comeback from injury against Bayern Munich midweek.

"Alex will only be part of the squad when he is 100 per cent fit. He is in full training, but still has a few problems when he is challenged, so there is no point risking him. Ibrahimovic is fine and Mauro Camoranesi has also recovered, but Gianluca Zambrotta is a little tired and we might rest him in the second half."

Juve cannot afford to take too many risks ahead of tonight's clash, as Messina are on fine form and can challenge for the leadership.

"Messina are a great team," conceded Capello. "They're quick on the break with a wide-spread attacking system that includes everyone in the side and always go for the win. We will have to be very careful."

One of their key players is fullback Alessandro Parisi, nicknamed the Sicilian Roberto Carlos and a prime transfer target for the Turin giants.

"We'd be happier if he wasn't on the pitch! That's the only way to avoid his long-range shots, as he really can score from any position."

The only Serie A side to take points off Juve this season has been fellow Sicilians Palermo, so Messina are more pumped up than ever coming to the Delle Alpi.

Meanwhile, Capello has also criticised the expansion of the top flight to 20 teams this year.

"I don't like it," said the man who has won Scudetto titles with both Milan and Roma. "There is no time to recover from small injuries and with so many games it seems as if people prefer to watch on television than go to the stadium."

Trez: Juve still a force

Football Italia

David Trezeguet is confident that Juventus will remain a force even without the aid of his goals. The Frenchman will have shoulder surgery on Tuesday which will rule him out of action until mid-January. But the former Monaco man believes his side will be able to cope with his absence despite an apparent striker shortage.

"Juventus remain a very strong side. Even without me, they will be very competitive," said the international. "My absence will simply give those who haven't played that much so far a chance to show people what they can do.

"That is why I don't think that there is any need for the club to add to the squad in the January transfer window either."

Trezeguet, who today celebrates his 27th birthday, is looking to summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic to make an impact in his absence.

"He is demonstrating his qualities in a championship which he is just getting familiar with," added Trez. "But I think that he has all the qualities needed to become a great player at this football club.

"This is a very determined Juventus side which has understood what boss Fabio Capello wants of us. The arrivals of Emerson, Fabio Cannavaro and Ibrahimovic have given us a great chance of victory."

The loss of Trezeguet will increase the pressure on Alex Del Piero to make his presence felt again. "He is working hard and well," continued the striker. "He will soon demonstrate his quality to everybody."

Trezeguet Promises February Return

Goal.com

David Trezeguet has promised his fans he will be back in action by February. The French striker will have an operation on his shoulder next Tuesday in France, something which the Juventus player believes that had to be done.

"In February I'll be fine. Even though it's not the right moment, I had to have this operation. I decided this with the club and my national team."

However Trezeguet is not sure if he will be back at his best after this operation, but he will be back in time for the most important part of the season.

"I hope to get well soon as everything will be done in the best way, but I cannot tell if I shall be back at 100%. I spoke with Capello, and also he agrees that I should have this operation. In February it will be the most important part of the league and the Champions League."

Pessotto To Hang Up Boots

Goal.com

Juventus' Gianluca Pessotto has revealed that at the end of the season there is a big possibility he will retire. The defender has yet to play this season as he is spending more time on the bench and stands, and when asked what his future holds, the bianconero replied, "At the end of the season I might quit."

Pessotto also spoke about the present, which right now means Trezeguet's absence. "The squad is doing well, even though there are important players out; I hope that Del Piero returns soon, while Trezeguet's absence will be felt. But Zalayeta is ready to substitute him."

Finally some words of warning about Messina. "I think the season is still long and there are no weak teams. We must watch out for Messina."

Juve rule out signings

Football Italia

Transfer guru Luciano Moggi has explained why Juventus will not buy a new striker in January. The club have been linked with a New Year move given that David Trezeguet has been ruled out for three months. But the Old Lady's director general insists that it would make no sense to make a swoop.

"Juventus will not be buying anyone," he insisted. "The window opens in January but Trezeguet will be playing again by January 15. Bringing in a new player would mean doubling up in personnel and we are not interested in that."

However, some critics insist that even with Trezeguet, four strikers is not enough for the Turin giants.

"We don't need another forward," he added. "You don't collect players, you collect stamps."

Moggi also shot down whispers which claimed that the club were lining up a sensational return for Roberto Baggio. "We don't believe in fairy tales here," he responded.

Meanwhile, utility player Gianluca Pessotto has admitted that he may quit the game at the end of the season. "I'm thinking of retiring," said the 34-year-old.

Gila shows transfer caution

Football Italia

Milan are being strongly linked with a move for Alberto Gilardino - but he's not keen on a January switch.

"I don't think it would be a good idea to move mid-season even if anything can happen," said the Parma sensation. "But I could even stay another year with my current club."

The Italian hotshot was one of the most wanted players during the summer yet remained at the Stadio Tardini. Although he's had a difficult start to the season, there are signs of improvement after he netted his first goal for Italy in the 4-3 win over Belarus.

"I have to thank Coach Marcello Lippi and captain Fabio Cannavaro who helped me to deal with the pressure I was under," explained the 22-year-old. "Having the faith of Lippi in this difficult moment for me was a surprise. He could have opted for someone else but decided to reward me for my work in training."

The former Under-21 ace has only been a part of the full national side for six weeks but he's been made to feel welcome.

"This squad has a distorted image," he noted. "I found myself with real men, champions who know how to cope when things go wrong. My teammates were even a great help to me at half-time against Belarus, when I just couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. I thank them all."

Bonera unsure of future

Football Italia

Parma youngster Daniele Bonera has failed to rule out the possibility of a move in the January transfer window.

"I'm very happy at Parma but something could occur if a concrete offer was made," said the defender. "Could a move happen in the New Year? It all depends on what Parma's intentions are for me."

The 23-year-old is one of Italy's most promising defenders and was heavily linked with a move to Juve in the summer. However, a switch didn't take place even if he admits that the Bianconeri did ponder making an offer.

"I know that Juventus were after me for the post Lilian Thuram era," he admitted. "It is obviously my dream to play for a great side."

The former Brescia ace admits that he has no preference over any possible future clubs but has ruled out a move abroad.

"I would prefer to play in Italy," he added. "Where? I don't want to make any distinctions. All I will say is that I supported Milan as a boy and I look up to Alessandro Nesta."
