Injury blow for Del Piero
Football Italia
Alessandro Del Piero’s difficulties continue after he was ruled out of action for the next two weeks.
The Juventus ace is struggling with a tendon problem in his left ankle that will require 15 days of specific training. The No. 10 has therefore been ruled out of Sunday’s trip to Udinese but also Italy’s World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Belarus.
Del Piero hasn’t particularly impressed so far this term and this setback is just the latest blow for the captain. He’s struggled for form, with David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic often out-performing him in Turin.
The Italian ace, who was dropped for Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Maccabi, has been suffering with the tendon problem for a number of weeks now. He first picked up the injury during the 1-0 win over Moldova on September 8 when he scored the only goal.
Del Piero could return to first team action for the Bianconeri in their Week 6 clash against Messina.
Juve deny Del Piero feud
Planet Football
Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi has dismissed speculation that has suggested the club are in dispute with striker Alessandro Del Piero. The talismanic figure has failed to rediscover the type of form that once made him one of Europe's finest and has faced continual criticism in his homeland.
However, Moggi has backed the player to return from this indifferent patch - citing a tendon injury as the source of this latest loss of form.
''If Del Piero isn't in good condition it is because of a tendon injury,'' claimed Moggi. ''Until he was unfit he played well. The physical problems have jeopardised his preparation but we are convinced he will recover soon.''
Del Piero took up a place on the bench in Juve's UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday, with Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimovic winning a starting berth. Speculation has suggested Del Piero is uncomfortable with the arrival of Ibrahimovic, but again, Moggi denies this claim.
''It isn't true that Del Piero suffers from Ibrahimovic's presence,'' continued Moggi. ''It's an advantage being close to big champions. The club is close to Del Piero but before being a champion, he is a man.
''He knows what to do to face these situations. He will be back to the player we know.''
Del Piero axe fear
Planet Football
Juventus talisman Alessandro Del Piero is battling for his place in the Italy squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Reports in Italy suggest Del Piero's recent below-par form could prompt Marcello Lippi to axe him from his plans for the games against Slovenia and Belarus.
Del Piero was only on the substitutes' bench for Juventus' UEFA Champions League win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv on Tuesday evening.
The Old Lady insist Del Piero is nursing a tendon injury and that is the factor behind his current dip in standards. But the Italian media believe Del Piero's malaise in form, not fitness, will lead to his omission from the squad Lippi is due to announce on Sunday.
Speculation suggests Del Piero needs to force his way back in to the Juve side for this weekend's Serie A tussle against Udinese. Only a positive performance will cement his place in former Juve chief Lippi's squad for next month's World Cup double-header.
Del Piero's plight mirrors that of ex-Juve colleague Christian Vieri, who has endured a lacklustre start to the season with Internazionale.
Zebina gets French call
Football Italia
Jonathan Zebina’s fine form for Juventus has finally caught the attention of the French national side. The defender had complained about the lack of an international call-up recently, but he now figures in Raymond Domenech’s plans.
The tactician has today included Zebina in his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Cyprus. Club colleague David Trezeguet and Olivier Dacourt of Roma have also been selected in the party.
Zebina has impressed in Turin since his move from Roma, in a Juventus defence that has conceded just one goal this season.
"That record is down to the Coach who is teaching us his ideas," the former Cagliari player stated. "Our defensive strength is not down to one particular player. It is more to do with the fact that we have a great desire to prove how good we are."
The Bianconeri won again on Tuesday evening, when they disposed of Maccabi Tel Aviv, but their performance wasn’t as good as previous displays. "We may not be playing great stuff right now but I personally prefer to play badly as a team but still win," he added.
Zebina has also commented on the Juventus fans after less than 10,000 turned up in midweek. "This is totally different from Rome," he added. "It’s sad to see so few people at the arena. I hope more will come in the future."
Capello keen on Parisi
Planet Football
Serie A newcomers Messina have reported an approach from Juventus for their high-scoring left back Alessandro Parisi. Parisi scored 14 goals last season playing a vital role in Messina's push for promotion to Serie A.
Internazionale have also expressed an interest in the defender, as Messina sporting director Mariano Fabiani confirmed.
"If in January an important offer arrives we could sell him," Fabiani told Guerin Sportivo magazine. "Parisi is an important player for us, but a club like Messina must think in a certain way. Big sides are seeing his performances. Juve have been the first, but last week Inter also showed their interest.
"We are ready to discuss the possible transfer. We await the right proprosal to open a negotiation."
Deportivo strike River Plate deal over Mascherano
Tribal Football
Deportivo La Coruna president Augusto Caesar Lendoiro has struck a tentative agreement with River Plate for midfielder Javier Mascherano. AS says the two clubs have agreed a deal in principle for the Argentina international ahead of the winter market.
But River still have the right to sell Mascherano to a higher bidder and are expecting a firm approach to arrive from Real Madrid in the coming weeks.
Real Madrid president wants both Roma stars Totti, Cassano

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is eyeing AS Roma stars Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano. Both players have been long-term targets for Perez and impressed him during the week as Roma went down 4-2 in Madrid in the Champions League.
Ex-Real sports director Jorge Valdano confirmed Totti came close to joining Real over the summer. While Cassano's contract expires in 2006 and his agent was spotted with Real officials at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

Gentile names U-21 boys
Football Italia
Azzurrini tactician Claudio Gentile has selected his squad for the games against Slovenia and Belarus. The Under-21 boss has called up 21 players for the European Championship qualifiers to be played on October 8 and 12.
There are no surprise selections but Roma’s Daniele De Rossi is absent which means he should again be picked for the senior squad.
Full squad - Goalkeepers: Agliardi (Brescia), Berni (Ternana), Cassano (Empoli).
Defenders: Bovo (Parma), Chiellini (Fiorentina), Ferronetti (Parma), Mantovani (Torino), Piccolo (Reggina), Potenza (Parma), Zambelli (Brescia).

Forwards: Bianchi (Cagliari), Floro Flores (Perugia), Pazzini (Atalanta), Pepe (Piacenza).
Cavenaghi eyes Argentina spot
Planet Football
Fernando Cavenaghi hopes to win a call-up to the Argentina national team. The Spartak Moscow ace hopes the appointment of Jose Pekerman will increase his chances of breaking into the national set-up.
"With the new coach in the national team I have new expectations. I hope that Pekerman remembers me from when I played for the national youth team," said Cavenaghi.
"Bielsa had chosen other players, he preferred Hernan Crespo but I don't have anything to say about that. I can't make any criticisms on Bielsa, he did a great job".
Cavenaghi is enjoying life in Russia after his summer move from River Plate
"It's a great league. There are many competitive teams," added Cavenaghi. "It's true that I am very far from Argentina, it's not the same to play in Russia than in Europe but I think that I have the same chances as other players for being called to the national team".

Serie A Preview: Udinese - Juventus
Football Italia
League leaders Juventus will be looking to get back on the winning trail after being held to a draw last week. However, they face a tricky test at the Stadio Friuli against an Udinese side who have a number of individual players ready to punish the smallest mistake.
The Bianconeri had won all of their previous games before the 1-1 home tie with Palermo last week. They finally conceded their first goal of the League campaign before Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored his third for the club.
The Swede should start against Udinese, even if it is unclear who will partner him between David Trezeguet and Alex Del Piero. The latter seems favourite after he played no part in the 1-0 win over Maccabi in midweek. Boss Fabio Capello is unlikely to make any major changes to the side but Fabio Cannavaro and Pavel Nedved may be rested given their recent fitness problems.
Udinese will be without Marek Jankulovski after his sending-off in the controversial defeat to Brescia last week. His absence is somewhat ironic seeing as he was heavily tipped to join Juventus in the summer. He will be replaced by Felipe.
Coach Luciano Spalletti is likely to recall David Pizarro to the first team after his substitute duty in Week 4. However, it remains to be seen whether the tactician will keep faith with his adventurous 4-3-3 tactics given the quality of Juventus.
Udinese (probable): De Sanctis; Bertotto, Cribari, Kroldrup, Felipe; Pinzi, Pizarro, Mauri; Di Michele, Fava, Di Natale
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Olivera, Emerson, Blasi, Nedved; Ibrahimovic, Del Piero

Moggi defends Del Piero
Football Italia
Alessandro Del Piero is not past his best, insists Juventus director general Luciano Moggi.
The No 10 hasn't had the greatest starts to the new season which has led to wide criticism from the Italian media. But Moggi maintains that Del Piero's recent performances have been hampered by his present physical condition.
"If Alex isn't at his best right now then that is because he has a small tendon problem," revealed the club official. "Up until that point, Del Piero had done fine but we are convinced that he will soon be playing well again."
However, the Italian international has been dropped on a number of occasions already this term after the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
"Del Piero is not suffering the presence of Ibrahimovic because it is only an advantage to have such champions in the same squad," added Moggi. "The club are staying close to Alex but he is a man and not just a player. He knows what to do in these situations and I'm sure that the Del Piero we all recognise will return."
The attacker was rested for last night's 1-0 win over Maccabi but he should start at the weekend against Udinese.
Capello: Our Midfielders Are Tired
Goal.com
After the unexpected difficult win over Maccabi in the Champions League, Fabio Capello admitted that Juve have some midfield problems.
The bianconeri's coach explained that some players seem to be out of fuel and that would be the reason why the Old Lady had some difficulties against Palermo and Maccabi in their last two games.
"Some players were tired," declared Capello, "We were suffering especially in midfield and for this reason I put in Olivera."
Record Low Ticket Sales For Juve Games Continue
Goal.com
Juventus continue to suffer from terrible attendances at their Champions League home games. Yesterday’s match versus Maccabi Tel Aviv saw only 6,494 tickets sold, 1,000 of which were bought by the Israeli side’s fans.
It is now three consecutive seasons that Juve’s ticket sales for Champions League matches have been progressively decreasing, a trend the Bianconero management is unable to stop.

Juventus 1 - 0 Maccabi Tel Aviv
Football Italia

Mauro German Camoranesi's goal proved enough to beat Maccabi Tel Aviv and maintain Juve's 100 per cent Euro record.
The Bianconeri were hoping to all but seal up their passage into the next round with a second successive win after their 1-0 result away to Ajax, but Fabio Cannavaro was out injured and Jonathan Zebina returned from a ban.
Fabio Capello tinkered with his squad once more, leaving Alessandro Del Piero on the bench in favour of David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Within three minutes Trezeguet had fallen in the area under pressure, but the referee waved play on.
Gianluca Zambrotta then gathered a corner kick and turned it over the bar, while Mauro Camoranesi's powerful effort was deflected off target by Strool. Pavel Nedved's low set-piece was turned out and from the corner kick Alessio Tacchinardi nodded just over.
The action took its time to get going in a practically deserted Stadio Delle Alpi, but on 27 minutes Trezeguet met Ibrahimovic's cross from the right and his header was well saved.
Maccabi hit back with Addo shaking the side-netting, but Juventus eventually broke through just before the break with Mauro German Camoranesi. The Italian international rose to nod in a Nedved corner kick.
Trezeguet's stop and volley was just off target soon after, but there were worried faces just before the break when Nedved was stretchered off with a knee injury.
The Czech star was able to continue after treatment in the second half and his free kick reached the head of Ibrahimovic only for Strauber to perform a great save. Nedved then went for goal with another set-piece and fired it inches wide of the woodwork.
Ibrahimovic hit the back of the net on 69 minutes, but play had already been halted for the Swede's offside position. Nagar and Reis had attempts from distance, but Gianluigi Buffon had his first real save 73 minutes into the match on Cohen's fierce left-foot strike.
Juve took note of the scare and tried to put the result beyond doubt with Emerson and Nedved efforts charged down by Strool. A corner kick came out to Igor Tudor and his powerful header was fingertipped over the bar by Strauber.
Maccabi also went close from a set-piece, as Panstil's header was off target, but Juve maintain their 100 per cent record in the Champions' League.
Juventus: Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Tudor, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Emerson, Tacchinardi, Nedved; Trezeguet, Ibrahimovic (Olivera 80)
Maccabi Tel Aviv: Strauber; Panstil, Marcio Giovanili, Strool, Nagar; Biton (Bounfeld 68), T Cohen, Mishaelof (Mbamba 75), Reis, Mesika; Addo

Post-Match comments
Juventus are the opposite of Roma at the moment, as they maintained their 100 per cent record in Group C with a slender victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv.
"This is a tour de force for us," pointed out Fabio Capello, "so a bit of fatigue is bound to set in. We were nonetheless often dangerous and should have scored more."
The Bianconeri had hit the back of the net for a second time with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the move was disallowed for offside.
"I would also like to see the Ibrahimovic incident again, but looking at the replays it is a very tight decision that could have gone either way. The Swede is improving with each game."
With Bayern Munich's 4-0 win over Ajax, the Germans and Italians have a joint six-point lead over the other Group C contenders and can seal up their qualification in the next game.
"This was a very important tie," added Capello, "and the three points were crucial, so now the players have a well-earned rest for a couple of days. We hope to continue along this path, as it would be great to reach the final two games of the Group without the pressure of a result and so we could rotate the squad."
Capello "really satisfied" with Juventus win
Tribal Football
Mauro Camoranesi struck the winner as Juventus saw off Maccabi Tel-Aviv 1-0 last night in Turin. Pavel Nedved delivered the perfect corner for Camoranesi to head in past the impressive Liran Strauber in the Maccabi goal.
Juve coach Fabio Capello declared afterwards: "I am really satisfied with the performance of my team. Maccabi are good opponents and are really strong defensively, but I am pleased all the same with the way we played.
"We were dangerous on several occasions but we did not manage to score. The players were maybe a little bit tired, but there is such a great team spirit here that everyone helps each other - we do not care about being tired.
"All of my players played well against a strong team."
Juve midfielder Pavel Nedved also said: "It is not easy to be brilliant all the time when you play so often. Sometimes you have to grind out results. So far we have done really well.
"Our defence has conceded only one goal in seven games - it is a real weapon for us compared to last season. We just have to continue playing like this."
Inter Milan to ask about Kompany tonight
Tribal Football
Inter Milan chief Massimo Moratti is expected to meet with Anderlecht youngster Vincent Kompany tonight after the two clubs clash in the Champions League. Both Moratti and coach Roberto Mancini intend to have an informal chat with Kompany about a possible move to Inter in January.
Kompany's agent has confirmed Inter's interest and Anderlecht have told the Italian giants he could be available during the winter market for a starting price of £10 million.
Porto's Diego: I rejected Chelsea approach
Tribal Football
Porto midfielder Diego has revealed he snubbed an offer from Chelsea to join the European champs over the summer. "I almost agreed to join them when I left Santos, but in the end I chose not to," said the former Santos playmaker.
"They are under pressure to win every game because they have an owner who is the central personality at the club and sometimes these characters can be viewed as more important than the players themselves. That is a difficult situation.
"I believe that I made the right choice. I feel their style is too strong for me and obviously this is something we will have to watch out for at Stamford Bridge."

Juventus v Maccabi Tel-Aviv: Preview
ESPN Soccernet
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has enjoyed a promising start to his Juventus career but the Swedish international believes the best is yet to come.
Ibrahimovic has scored three times since his summer move from Ajax, helping the Bianconeri climb to top spot in Serie A. Instead of being satisfied with his efforts, however, Ibrahimovic believes he has much more to offer, starting against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
"I have scored three goals but I'm not happy with my performance, it's not what I want and I what I am capable of doing," said Ibrahimovic. "I've come here to succeed, to prove that I am worthy of playing in Italy.
"Give me one more week and I will show you what I am capable of."
He may get an early chance as Juve coach Fabio Capello is set to include him in the starting line-up to face the Israelis at the Delle Alpi. A victory for the hosts would see them extend their 100% record in Group C and also make up for losing their perfect start in Serie A after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Palermo on Saturday.
"Against Palermo we did not play well, not like in our past games," added Ibrahimovic."We are disappointed but this draw is no drama."
The weekend clash also threw up some injury problems for Capello with captain Alessandro Del Piero, Fabio Cannavaro and Pavel Nedved all doubtful for the meeting with Maccabi. David Trezeguet has recovered from a shoulder injury, however, and is fit.
Maccabi are aware that a win in Turin would thrust them into the limelight and midfielder Elad Bounfeld is determined to grab his share of the headlines.
He said: "My dream and that of my team-mates is to do what Israeli soccer has talked about for years - to get a surprise victory that everyone will talk about in Europe.
Coach Nir Klinger has a lot respect for Juve but believes his team will give them a real fight.
"Capello is one of the coaches I admired most, I've been following his career since I was a coach in the lower leagues but in this contest he is the only one who has something to lose," said Klinger. "True, they have some of the best players in Europe and they can beat any team easily but there are days when they play poorly and their game can be interrupted.
"They are in the top level of European soccer and we are in the fourth but that doesn't decide the outcome of the match."
Maccabi travel without injured midfielder Liran Cohen but Klinger can count on Brazilian Bruno Reis and young Ghana striker Ishmael Addo.
Trio in doubt for Juventus
Football Italia
Juventus boss Fabio Capello has three major injury concerns for Tuesday's Champions' League test. "Nothing has been decided as far as the line-up is concerned, I'll make a final decision tomorrow," said the tactician.
The Bianconeri face Maccabi Tel Aviv at the Delle Alpi but Fabio Cannavaro, Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet are all doubts. "Trezeguet has a shoulder problem, Nedved had five stitches on a calf cut on Saturday, while Cannavaro is struggling with his ankle," confirmed the Coach.
The Old Lady got their European Cup campaign off to an excellent start with a win at Ajax and Capello wants three more points against their Israeli opponents.
"It is an important game and it would be an error on our part to go into the match thinking that it will be easy to score," he continued. "The points on offer tomorrow are far too important for us to miss out on at this stage of the competition.
"We need to show great respect for our opponents, who are well organised defensively and who can be dangerous on the counter attack."
If Trezeguet does recover in time to start, then he will probably play alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic - relegating Alex Del Piero to the bench. That would give further ammunition to his critics who haven't been impressed with his start to the season.
"I don't think it is right that the newspapers are targeting him in such a way," added Capello. "The fact that he has yet to complete a whole game is down to just tactical reasons."
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has also commented on the game against Maccabi Tel Aviv. "It is nice to be playing a side from a nation such as Israel but we are looking for a win because this is a fundamental game for us," he stated.
Ibrahimovic promising better
Football Italia
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored again for Juventus on Saturday but he's still not satisfied with his form. The summer signing from Ajax netted in the 1-1 draw with Palermo but he insists he can offer much more.
"I've already got three goals but I'm not that happy with how I'm playing overall. I'm not performing how I know I can and how I want," said the Swedish international. "I feel that I have the faith of the Coach and scoring boosts confidence but we did drop two points at the weekend.
"We didn't play well as a team against Palermo and I also struggled, losing too many balls in the game."
However, the striker is confident that he can prove to be a success at the Stadio Delle Alpi this term. "I need more time to get to know my teammates," he continued. "Give me another week and you will all soon see who the real Zlatan Ibrahimovic is.
"I've come to Italy to win trophies but also to prove to people that I am worthy of this championship."
Ibrahimovic is expected to get another chance to shine on Tuesday, when he should partner David Trezeguet against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions' League.
Ibrahimovic: I will astonish Juventus fans!
Tribal Football
Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has promised to "astonish" fans in the coming weeks. The Swede has started his Juve career off in superb fashion, but says he is capable of a lot more. "To score three goals isn't enough for me," said Ibrahimovic. "Soon I will astonish you all with my play!"
Atletico Madrid seek new talks over Boca Juniors ace Tevez

Atletico Madrid sports director Toni Munoz will hold talks with Boca Juniors later this week about striker Carlos Tevez. Munoz is travelling to South America to check on several of the club's transfer targets and will take advantage of the trip to hold a fresh round of talks with Boca president Mauricio Macri over Tevez.
The striker is now expected to be sold in January, with Boca's board split over whether to cash in on him now or wait until next year.

Nedved doubt for Tel-Aviv
Football Italia
Pavel Nedved is in doubt to feature against Maccabi Tel-Aviv after he required five stitches to close a gaping wound. The Czech international suffered the cut when he clashed with Eugenio Corini during last night's 1-1 draw with Palermo, but was able to carry on after treatment.
It is remarkable that he could continue, as medical staff today revealed they needed five stitches to close up the laceration just under the calf muscle. This injury, combined with a bruised back and knee during the Ajax game, put Nedved in doubt to face Maccabi Tel-Aviv in Tuesday's Champions' League tie.
David Trezeguet is ready to start despite injuring the shoulder that has already been damaged twice in the past year, while Fabio Cannavaro suffered slight bruising to his foot.
There are reports that the tired performance against Palermo will push Fabio Capello to rotate his squad once more. Up until now he has refused to rest key players Emerson, Cannavaro, Nedved and Gianluca Zambrotta, but some or all may be on the bench this Tuesday.
Zlatan delight at Juve start
Planet Football
Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich has spoken of his delight after enjoying a productive start to his new career in Italy. The talented Swedish hit-man joined the Turin giants just before the transfer deadline and has proved an astute acquisition thus far.
Ibrahimovich netted Juve's goal at the weekend in a disappointing 1-1 stalemate with Palermo and is confident performances at his new club will improve given time.
"I feel I am getting trust from the manager," said Ibrahimovich. "It's nice to score goals, it's good for your confidence. Unfortunately we lost two points.
"We didn't play well together. I also struggled and lost too many balls - it felt like I have been with the team for only a short while. I need some time to get used to my team-mates."
Zebina furious with France
Football Italia
Jonathan Zebina is an integral part of Juve's unstoppable defence, but is hurt that it still hasn't earned him a call from his country.
"It is rather strange that I haven't even received a warning of a potential call," he told newspaper L'Equipe. "I respect everyone, but as I play for a big club that gets great results then this whole situation is a little worrying.
"I am paying the price for Domenech's new policy of favouring those who play their club football in France."
However, Les Bleus regularly ignored Zebina when he played at Roma, so the new Coach might not be the key figure.
"Domenech can make his choice," continued the defender, "but he cannot close his eyes to someone who is a first choice regular at Juventus with a Coach like Fabio Capello. This great tactician has had faith in me for five years."
Over the last few years with the Giallorossi Capello was one of the few club members who did retain their faith in Zebina, but the move to Turin has worked wonders for his confidence.
"When I wasn't playing too well," revealed the ex-Cagliari man, "it was all my fault. When I was playing well, defeats were still my fault. I don't crave glory, but it is nice to feel appreciated when you do something positive or enter the national side because you deserved it."
AC Milan in Atalanta talks over young pair

AC Milan have opened negotiations with Atalanta over young pair Riccardo Montolivo and Pazzini. After initial enquiries, it's emerged that Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani is now in serious talks with Atalanta over both players.
Montolivo is being lined up as a long-term successor to Portuguese veteran Rui Costa, while Pazzini is rated very highly by Milan technical staff.
Sunday 26 September
Juventus 1 - 1 Palermo
Football Italia

Juve's 100 per cent record came screeching to a halt when a Luca Toni-less Palermo grabbed a 1-1 draw in Turin. Fabio Capello continued to tinker with his squad as top scorer David Trezeguet was rested in favour of the new Zlatan Ibrahimovic-Alessandro Del Piero partnership.
Palermo's hopes of getting something from this trip to Turin were dented when Luca Toni pulled out with a thigh strain, so Argentine summer signing Ernesto Antonio Farias was given his Serie A debut upfront. Giuseppe Biava also returned from a one-match ban to bolster the defence.
Fabio Grosso got off to a terrible start when he accidentally clashed with Ibrahimovic and the former Perugia defender came off worse with a head injury that required several minutes of treatment.
The Bianconeri had their first chance after five minutes, when Pavel Nedved ran in from the back on to Mauro Camoranesi's cross, but his header was over the bar. Camoranesi's header from a Nedved corner was more accurate, but did not really trouble Matteo Guardalben.
However, it was Palermo who opened the scoring after 16 minutes with Cristian Zaccardo. A long free kick was floated into the box by ex-Juve man Eugenio Corini and Zaccardo got away from his marker to nod in at the back post. It was the first goal Juve have conceded in Serie A this season.
The Bianconeri fought back immediately and Guardalben did well to parry Emerson's effort with his foot, then flew to the other side of his net to hold the Brazilian's follow-up.
There was controversy on 20 minutes when Farias fell under Fabio Cannavaro's challenge in what might have been considered a last man foul, but the referee waved play on.
Corini was booked for what can only be described as a rugby tackle on Nedved, then Ibrahimovic curled a promising shot round the far corner with the outside of his right foot.
Corini was considerably better on the ball and his curling corner kick forced Buffon into a tricky save, then Massimo Mutarelli's cutback reached Christian Raimondi only for a weak effort from the midfielder.
Del Piero had a great chance just before the break, but his shot took a deflection off his marker and allowed Guardalben to recover the ball.
Farias was causing the defence problems and Cannavaro just about got away with a defective first touch inside his own area, then Buffon got down well to hold a fierce Simone Barone effort from distance.
Nedved was perhaps fortunate to stay on the field when his high kick took down Andrea Barzagli after the ball had run away from him, but the referee did not even book the Czech star.
Fabio Capello made a change for the second half, introducing David Trezeguet for Del Piero. It was an ill-fated substitution, as before he'd even touched the ball the striker had fallen heavily on to his shoulder. The Frenchman had suffered two serious shoulder injuries last season, but was able to continue.
Palermo nearly doubled their lead moments later when another wonderful Corini free kick found the outstretched foot of Farias and pressure from Emerson pushed it over the bar from five yards.
However, it was Juventus who drew level in controversial circumstances. Trezeguet's header was only parried into the path of Ibrahimovic and the goalkeeper couldn't keep out this second effort. However, replays suggest the Frenchman may have been offside when the cross came in.
Conteh was particularly unlucky, as the Palermo defender lasted just 13 minutes before limping off with a thigh injury, then Franco Brienza replaced Farias. The Bianconeri also made a change, throwing on Ruben Olivera for Camoranesi.
Juve finally became dangerous with 10 minutes to go, as Stephen Appiah's venomous cross was turned out for a corner before Trezeguet could pounce, but the pressure never quite turned into scoring opportunities for the Turin giants.
Juventus: Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi (Olivera 79), Emerson, Blasi (Appiah 74), Nedved; Del Piero, Ibrahimovic
Palermo: Guardalben; Zaccardo, Barzagli, Biava, Grosso; Mutarelli, Barone, Corini, Raimondi (Conteh 55) (Terlizzi 68); Zauli, Farias (Brienza 79)

Capello content with point
Football Italia
Fabio Capello wasn't too downhearted after losing his 100 per cent record to Palermo, while Carlo Mazzone has advice for Roma's pampered stars.
"We were a little too relaxed for their goal," noted the Juventus boss after the 1-1 draw at the Delle Alpi. "Nonetheless, we created some good chances and played well. This point is to be accepted without regrets."
The Rosanero are still unbeaten after four games, which included trips away to Juventus and Inter.
"I am very happy with our performance," stated Coach Francesco Guidolin, "even if we played better against Inter and even more so in our 0-0 draw with Fiorentina."
This was a particularly valuable point, as it was earned without the Sicilians' top scorer Luca Toni.
"We had some problems coming in to this game, as Toni is the focus point of our attack. It went well, even if we started out far too timidly."
Juventus coach: Fitness the factor in Palermo draw
Tribal Football
Juventus were held 1-1 by Palermo in Turin last night.
The visitors went in front early in the first half when Eugenio Corini crossed to the far post where Cristian Zaccardo met the ball and headed high into the net for the Rosaneri. But Juventus eventually got their equaliser when Zlatan Ibrahimovic pounced after a David Trezeguet header had been saved by Matteo Guardalben.
"Playing two games in three days is very difficult," said Juventus coach Fabio Capello. "We didn't create enough chances. "Palermo defended very well and deserved their result. I was satisfied with our performance, though we should not have conceded a goal today."
Juventus coach Capello surprised by Voller decision
Tribal Football
Juventus coach Fabio Capello admitted last night he was surprised to learn that Rudi Voller had offered his resignation at AS Roma.
"I don't want to say too much on this as it may be interpreted in a bad way," said Capello when informed of Voller's decision. "The only thing I can say is that things must be very bad for someone as serious as him to make that decision. He will have his reasons."

Juventus has conceded its first goal of this season, although it was a goal from a set-piece. As for the rest, the Bianconeri did not risk anything, thanks to the usual rock-solid defence and also to a tireless midfield, where Emerson and Blasi are becoming a real dam.
The Brazilian player has already become a leader, and on the pitch he not only attacks the opponents but also often gives suggestions to his team mates. As he explains: "It's good to be trusted by the coach and my team mates. I do feel a leader because my team mates allow me to talk to them on the pitch and give them suggestions.
"With regards to this match, it must be said that they've gave us problems by fielding five men in the midfield but we've still managed to create opportunities. I've had one too but Guardalben was good at parrying it. After all, draw is fine as well, as we ended up having to fight back from a goal down".
Manuele Blasi agrees: "It's clear that when Juventus plays at home we're expected to win but we've met a very good team and, seeing the way the game was turning, a draw will do."
Cannavaro: "Good at catching up"
Official Juventus website
Fabio Cannavaro jokes about the first goal conceded by the Bianconeri's defence, as he's feeling confident by seeing a great Juventus at play.
"We've conceded the first goal and we've come to terms with it. We can go on without any problem now."
He continues: "They've outdone us on the occasion of their goal, Zaccardo has jumped higher than anyone and nodded in perfectly. However, we recovered immediately and controlled the match, a good match. When you meet such squads, who have played fewer matches and are fresher, you always find some troubles.
"Nevertheless, we've been good at not risking anything after the goal and at creating our own scoring opportunities."

Juventus v Palermo: Preview
ESPN Soccernet
Palermo believe they will continue their impressive start to life in Serie A and take something from their clash with Italian giants Juventus at the Delle Alpi in Turin. Francesco Guidolin's outfit have five points in their first three games since winning promotion, but league leaders Juve represent their most challenging task so far.
"I am satisfied because my team are playing football," said Guidolin. "We always try to win and we improve day by day."
The Rosaneri will have 10,000 of their fans at the game, but Palermo will have to be at their very best against Fabio Capello's troops, a team that has been running roughshod over opponents. With a formidable defensive barrier that has yet to concede a goal, and an attack that has netted eight times in their three encounters, the Bianconeri are cruising.
They also defeated Ajax in Amsterdam in the Champions League.
"Juve respects every rival, even the small teams, and that is why they are in the first position," said Palermo midfielder Mario Santana.
One aspect of the Sicilians' game that needs to improve is their goalscoring. They have hit the back of the net just twice in three games. "We have to take our chances, attack and play without fear, otherwise that will make their job easier," continued Santana.
Juventus tailed off badly at the end of last season and finished third, forcing them to go through pre-qualifying for the Champions League. The result was the departure of coach Marcello Lippi and the arrival of Capello, along with midfielder Emerson from Roma, defender Fabio Cannavaro from Internazionale and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Ajax.
Juve are playing like a team on a mission so far, with a five-point advantage over Scudetto holders AC Milan.
"It is still early to know what is going to happen," Cannavaro insisted. "Juve and Inter are strong teams but I think AC Milan, in spite of their slow start, are still the favourites."
Cannavaro has played a big part in his team's current success.
"In this squad, everyone defends and all of us attack," admitted Cannavaro. "The merit is not of just one line but of the whole team."
Capello's formula owes much to the `Three Jewels of Parma', as Lilian Thuram, Cannavaro and Gianluigi Buffon were known when they played for the Emilia club. The trio are the three crucial elements to Capello's defence.
"It's like returning back to the past at Parma," admitted the Italy captain Cannavaro. "There has always been a good feeling between us and this is evident on the pitch.
"I know how Thuram confronts a rival, what his next move is going to be and that makes my job so much easier. We help each other out and if we both make a mistake, there's always the magician (Buffon) behind us."
Capello is set to rest captain Alessandro Del Piero and play with in-form duo David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic upfront. The good news for Palermo is the return of defender Giuseppe Biava, who missed Wednesday's draw against Fiorentina as he served a one-match ban.
Juventus chief: We'll get Jankulovski
Tribal Football
Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has confirmed he won't give up on trying to sign Udinese midfielder Marek Jankulovski.
"He's a player we regard very highly at Juventus," said Moggi, "and we're confident he will soon be playing in a Juventus shirt. Whether that's in January or June, it doesn't matter, we will sign him."
Juventus defender Cannavaro slams Inter: I was never crocked
Tribal Football
Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro is loving life in Turin. The Italian international has surprised observers with the way he has handled his move from Inter Milan after several months on the sidelines with injury.
"There is a great feeling between me, Buffon and Thuram. At Juve, we all defend and all attack. If the defence is protected, then everyone benefits. With Fabio Capello, I find myself very well, he wanted to sign me in 2000.
"I know Inter have said that I was injured - it's rubbish."
Juventus' Blasi eyed by Real Madrid
Tribal Football
Juventus midfielder Manuele Blasi has been linked with Real Madrid. Real coach Mariano Garcia Remon has asked president Florentino Perez for a new central midfielder in January. Blasi, along with AC Milan's Massimo Ambrosini are on a short-list of names being considered by Real Madrid.
Juve ace Blasi was linked with Lazio and AS Roma over the summer, but director general Luciano Moggi insists the young midfielder is a required player this term.
Roma rival Man Utd, Chelsea for 'new Zidane'
Tribal Football
AS Roma are chasing Bordeaux midfielder Antonio Rio Mavuba. The teenager is already part of France's World Cup qualifying squad and is also on the wanted lists of Manchester United and Chelsea.
Roma defender Philippe Mexes has urged director general Franco Baldini to try and sign Mavuba, who at 18 is being likened to Zinedine Zidane. The youngster also remains a major target for United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who is prepared to break the bank to bring the strong-running midfielder to Old Trafford.
Juventus - Palermo
Football Italia
Leaders Juventus will be looking to maintain their 100 per cent record but face an unbeaten Palermo at the Delle Alpi on Saturday. The Bianconeri have looked compact and determined so far this term but the Sicilian outfit should not be underestimated given their start to the campaign.
The Old Lady have won all of their games with some ease after scoring eight goals and conceding none. Boss Fabio Capello has alternated his strikers to good use and if recent history is anything to go by then David Trezeguet, despite his four goals, will start on the bench this time - leaving Alex Del Piero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in attack.
The tactician has resisted the temptation to rotate his defenders which suggests that Zebina, Cannavaro, Thuram and Zambrotta will again guard Gigi Buffon. Capello may also decide to rest Pavel Nedved with the Champions’ League game against Maccabi Tel Aviv coming up.
Newly promoted Palermo have confirmed themselves as a side to keep an eye on this season. They grabbed an impressive 1-1 draw at Inter in Week 2 and were only denied a win against Fiorentina on Wednesday thanks to the brilliance of Viola ‘keeper Cristiano Lupatelli.
Luca Toni is their main goal threat, while it promises to be a special occasion for Eugenio Corini - who returns to Turin - and also Andrea Gasbarroni, who is currently on loan from the Italian giants.
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Cannavaro, Thuram, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Blasi, Emerson, Nedved; Del Piero, Ibrahimovic
Palermo (probable): Guardalben; Zaccardo, Conteh, Barzagli, Grosso; Corini, Barone; Santana, Zauli, Gasbarroni; Toni
Capello tinkering hits Trez
Football Italia
Fabio Capello couldn't have asked for a better start to his Juventus career, but the Coach is set to drop top scorer David Trezeguet for the Palermo game.
"Squad rotation is essential to maintain everyone's fitness levels and not exhaust players quickly," explained the Coach.
The majority of the changes have been upfront, where he has consistently chopped and changed between Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alessandro Del Piero and Trezeguet. It looks likely the Frenchman will be the one on the bench this evening despite netting four goals in three games.
"I realise we are doing well," he noted after three wins on the trot, "but we mustn't think that we're perfect. There are many elements that need improving and everyone will have the chance to play this season."
The team is almost unrecognisable from the one that conceded 42 goals in the last campaign, but Capello insists it is not all his doing.
"We have been able to get some important players back on track, such as Lilian Thuram. To get good results you need two elements: one that explains what he requires and another who listens and acts upon it."
The Bianconeri's chances of making it four in a row were boosted by the loss of Palermo hitman Luca Toni to a thigh injury, but the former Milan and Roma boss is not getting carried away with his optimism.
"I said before the season had even begun that the three teams to watch would be Fiorentina, Palermo and Udinese. We'll be taking on the latter two over the next week and to win a Scudetto you can't drop points along the way."
"I will continue to repeat that Juventus must have humility, determination and concentration," concluded Capello. "This is our credo for the whole season."
No Juventus for Toni
Football Italia
Palermo’s hopes of grabbing a result at Juventus on Saturday have been hit by an injury to Luca Toni. The Italian international, who has netted both of his side’s top-flight goals so far, has been ruled out of the trip to Turin.
The former Brescia striker, who is struggling with a right thigh strain, will probably be replaced by Ernesto Antonio Farias. Palermo already faced an uphill task seeing as Juventus have yet to concede a goal in the new campaign.
One of the main reasons for that is the arrival of Azzurri captain Fabio Cannavaro, a summer signing from Inter.
"It is as if I’ve gone back in time seeing as I’ve joined my former Parma colleagues in the form of Lilian Thuram and Gigi Buffon," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "I’ve always had an excellent relationship with both of them and that is evident on the field of play.
"For example, I know how Thuram approaches an opponent which allows me to take the necessary measures. He knows me well too. The fact that we are a well developed partnership is an obvious advantage. And if we both make a mistake then there is always a magician behind us…
"Buffon is undoubtedly the best goalkeeper in the world. We have to give him something to do now and again otherwise he wouldn’t get noticed!"
Nedved quits Czech Republic
Football Italia
Juventus star Pavel Nedved has today announced his retirement from international football. The accomplished midfielder played 83 times for the Czech Republic but will never wear their shirt again.
The 32-year-old, the current European Footballer of the Year, last played for the side at Euro 2004. However, that game ended in tears after he limped off with an injury in the 1-0 semi-final defeat to Greece.
Nedved, who netted 17 goals for his country, will continue to play club football as his current contract in Turin expires in 2006.
Del Piero sees success
Football Italia
Alex Del Piero believes Juventus are on the Scudetto path but has warned his troops to respect Palermo. The Bianconeri maintained their 100 per cent record on Wednesday at Samp but now face the Sicilian outfit on Saturday night.
"We are on the right road. It is never easy to play against Sampdoria, especially in Genoa," he told his official website. "But looking at our overall performance, I think we deserved the win. Next up is Palermo, a side that we must not underestimate."
The Old Lady have started the campaign in fine fashion and Del Piero was eager to contribute with a goal.
"I was very satisfied after netting my first League goal of the season in midweek," he added. "Especially as it was also my first at Marassi, a stadium which is just spectacular.
"We managed to get the three points which improved our League position but they were also excellent for our own conviction and enthusiasm."
Del Piero is expected to start the game against Palermo at the Delle Alpi but it is unclear who he will partner. Whispers suggest that Zlatan Ibrahimovic may just get the nod ahead of David Trezeguet, who could be rested despite his four Serie A goals so far.
