Juventus set to swoop

Football Italia

With Champions' League qualification secured, Juventus are now expected to strengthen their squad.

Transfer guru Luciano Moggi claimed that no new players would arrive after last night's 4-1 win at Djungarden but few believe him. Reports on Thursday suggest that boss Fabio Capello has asked for a new player in every department.

Arsenal defender Sol Campbell is still being linked but a move for Inter's Fabio Cannavaro would be simpler. Lazio full-back Massimo Oddo is another possible signing given that Juventus have been tracking him for months.

In midfield, Cesar of Lazio and Udinese's Marek Jankulovski are still objectives despite the latter being a reported £6.5m target for CSKA Moscow. The Old Lady are also keen on Lazio striker Simone Inzaghi after the recent sale of Marco Di Vaio to Valencia.

Juventus qualified for the group stages of the European Cup with a convincing win in Sweden on Wednesday.

"I'm more happy for the squad rather than myself," stated goalscorer Alessandro Del Piero. "Even if I was hungry to hit the back of the net again."

David Trezeguet, who bagged a brace, added: "I saw a great side and this is the most important factor. It has been some time since we played with such determination. My goals? They will be of use for my morale."

Tudor extends Juve deal

Football Italia

Igor Tudor has surprisingly renewed his contract with Italian giants Juventus despite talk of a summer move. The Croatian international has been heavily linked with a switch to Spurs after a few difficult seasons in Turin. But the defender, who can also play in midfield, has now committed himself to the Old Lady until June 2007.

"I feel as if Juventus is my home," he stated after putting pen to paper on his new contract this afternoon. "I'm very happy to have extended as this is a great show of faith in me. This is also an extra stimulus to do well in the new season."

Tudor, who has been constantly struggling with fitness problems recently, is about to start his seventh campaign with the Bianconeri.

Quartet await Euro draw

Football Italia

Milan, Inter, Roma and Juventus will today find out who they will play in the Champions' League. The draw for the group stages takes place in Monaco this afternoon with Serie A having four sides represented.

None are set for an easy draw though given that all of the clubs are only second seeds after last season's disappointments in Europe. That means they could be drawn against giants such as Porto, Real Madrid, Valencia, Deportivo La Coruna, Barcelona, Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

However, they won't face Chelsea or Liverpool given that the two Premiership sides are also in Pot 2.

Champions' League draw

Football Italia

The Champions' League draw has taken place with all four Italian clubs being handed tough groups. Italian champions Milan are in Group F along with Barcelona, Celtic and Shakthar Donetsk. Roma will face the mighty Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Dinamo Kiev.

The draw has been unkind to Juventus after they were named in Group C with Bayern Munich, Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Inter arguably have the easiest out of all Italian clubs as they take on Claudio Ranieri's Valencia, Anderlecht and Werder Bremen.

Group Pot 1 Pot 2 Pot 3 Pot 4
A Deportivo La Coruna Liverpool Monaco Olympiakos
B Real Madrid Roma Bayer Leverkusen Dinamo Kiev
C Bayern Munich Juventus Ajax Maccabi Tel Aviv
D Manchester United Lyon Sparta Prague Fenerbache
E Arsenal Panathinaikos PSV Eindhoven Rosenborg
F Barcelona Milan Glasgow Celtic Shakthar Donetsk
G Valencia Inter Anderlecht Werder Bremen
H Porto Chelsea Paris St.Germain CSKA Moscow

Euro draw reaction

Football Italia

Representatives of Italy's four Champions' League participants have commented on today's draw. Roma sporting director Franco Baldini was surprisingly cheerful after his club were drawn in Real Madrid's group for the third time in four years.

"The Spanish Press were right when they wrote that Francesco Totti would play at the Bernabeu," he joked after rumours that the Italian would join the European giants. "It will certainly be difficult but we are well used to coming up against them after our recent matches."

Baldini seemed to be more worried about the threat of Bayer Leverkusen and Dinamo Kiev who are also in Group B. "We have some tough opponents, especially because travelling to the Ukraine in September will be very difficult. Nevertheless, we will do our best to go through."

Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti was looking forward to the competition despite being landed with Barcelona, Celtic and Shakhtar Donetsk. "It isn't an easy group but it is very stimulating," said the tactician. "We know Barca well who we played last night.

"Celtic have shown in recent years that they can achieve some great results at both home and abroad. While Shakhtar have spent heavily this summer in order to put together a competitive side. We must take care even if our opponents probably fear us more right now."

City rivals Inter will also face Spanish opposition as they will play Valencia, Anderlecht and Werder Bremen in Group G.

"It is a difficult group but that is what we expected," stated Inter tactician Roberto Mancini. "This is the best competition in Europe so the quality is going to be very high. I'm optimistic though as we have what it takes to play against anyone."

Juventus won't be flying to Spain but they've been handed one of the toughest groups of all with Bayern Munich, Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

"It won't be easy for us," admitted Vice-president Roberto Bettega. "Even if it is nice to finally play against Bayern for the first time as we are both historic clubs. Ajax? They are an old rival of ours and it will be as difficult as it has always been against the Dutch."

Wolfsburg's D'Allesandro welcomes Deportivo talks

Tribal Football

Wolfsburg midfielder Andres D'Allesandro has confirmed the interest of Deportivo La Coruna in his transfer.

"I've been away for a long time with Argentina, in the Copa America and Olympics, so I haven't been in direct contact regarding negotiations," said the midfielder yesterday. "But yes, I know that there have been negotiations between both clubs about my possible transfer.

"Deportivo is a very important club in Spain and there are men of the class of Mauro Silva and Valerón that play there. Many compatriots of mine have spoken very well of Spain and the truth is that I would love to be able to play there, in so powerful a competition."

Depor are hopeful of signing D'Allesandro for around £8 million.

Capello: Juve cannot fail

Football Italia

Juventus know they must win in Sweden this evening to enter the Champions' League, so Fabio Capello and Alex Del Piero keep their concentration.

"We are gambling with a big slice of our entire season here," confessed the Coach. "It would be very serious to go out in the preliminary round, for a whole series of reasons. We cannot fail."

The Bianconeri were thought to have the easiest draw of the round, but Swedes Djurgarden earned a shock 2-2 draw at the Stadio Delle Alpi in the first leg.

"Some things have changed since that game," assured Capello. "Pavel Nedved is back and we are all much closer to match fitness. The Swedes will try to make their aggression count, so we must make the most of our technique and quality."

European Player of the Year Nedved may be back for his first game since the Euro 2004 semi-final, but there are doubts over the fitness of Gianluigi Buffon.

"He feels better now," explained Capello of his back problem, "and should be able to start. In case he doesn't, there will be someone up to the task to replace him."

Much of the pressure will be on the head of Alessandro Del Piero, who has struggled for form throughout the summer.

"We must get through this round to reach the Champions' League proper," added the captain. "Djurgarden are a compact team with a great team ethic and some good individual talents, but I want to write some new exciting chapters of my Juventus story with Capello."

Djurgarden 1 - 4 Juventus (3-6 agg)

Football Italia

Juventus are in the Champions' League after their confident 4-1 victory in Stockholm, including a strike from the returning Pavel Nedved.

The Bianconeri needed a victory in Sweden, or a high-scoring draw, to reach the Champions' League following the shock 2-2 result in the first leg. Nedved was back in action for his first official appearance since suffering a knee injury in Euro 2004, while Gianluigi Buffon was able to start despite a back problem.

Failure to reach the competition proper would be a massive blow for Fabio Capello's side, both in terms of their ambitions and their spending power over the final week of the transfer market.

There was a tense start to the game, as within the first couple of minutes Johannesson fell after what appeared to be an accidental elbow from David Trezeguet.

Juventus broke the deadlock after ten minutes with a well-worked goal. Right winger Ruben Olivera placed a low cross in for Alessandro Del Piero's delightful flick from seven yards. The captain had been roundly insulted after his first leg performance, but scored the opener with a splendid finish with the outside of his left foot.

Djurgarden remained dangerous and soon after Hysen - who had netted in Turin - skipped past both Lilian Thuram and Manuele Blasi before turning his shot just over the bar.

However, Juve were more aggressive and Tourray could only parry Del Piero's shot into the path of Nedved, whose follow-up was also charged down.

Yet it was Djurgarden who drew level on 19 minutes when Hysen caused yet more problems down the left flank and the ball was eventually slammed in from the edge of the box by Arneng.

Juve hit back and Tourray flew to parry Olivera's long-range effort, then Nedved charged into the box on Del Piero's through ball and was cut off by a desperate challenge.

Emerson's looping header dipped just over the crossbar, then Gianluca Zambrotta's spectacular rising drive was palmed out with some difficulty.

Juventus restored their lead on the half-hour mark with David Trezeguet, who struck his volley into the ground from an Alessandro Birindelli cross after it had been touched on by Del Piero.

This was a very important strike, as from here on the Bianconeri could afford to draw and take the tie either to extra time or to victory on the away goals rule.

Moments later they nearly grabbed their third. Zambrotta combined with Nedved and the Italian's cross was met by another fine Trezeguet volley, only this time goalkeeper Tourray was ready for him with a reaction save.

Del Piero was halted for a very dubious offside position, then Zambrotta's combination with the captain concluded with his finish skimming the woodwork.

The second half could not have started better for the visiting side, as within nine minutes Pavel Nedved had given them a crucial strike. Del Piero's taut free kick from the left found the Czech hero's finish from close range.

Hysen remained Djurgarden's most dangerous player and his angled drive was fingertipped round the post by Buffon mere moments later.

But the second half was far quieter as Juve made the most of their lead, while the Swedes lost heart having to score another three goals to turn this tie around.

Capello's first substitution was performed with just nine minutes left on the clock, but it was not Nedved who came off, as Marcelo Zalayeta replaced Del Piero.

It proved an inspired change, as in the closing stages Zalayeta's low cross was tapped in by Trezeguet from the six-yard box to put the result beyond any doubt.

Djurgarden: Tourray; Concha, Kuivasto, Storm, Karlsson; Arneng, Johansson, Johannesson (Dovicovic 61); Bapupa (Barsom 46), Stenman (Makondele 76); Hysen

Juventus: Buffon; Birindelli, Thuram, Montero, Zambrotta; Olivera, Blasi, Emerson, Nedved (Kapo 87); Trezeguet, Del Piero (Zalayeta 81)

Nedved: We can go all the way

Football Italia

Pavel Nedved claims that Juventus can now aim for the top of the European tree, but the club insists it doesn't need any new buys.

"I really wanted to be here and to get this result," said goalscorer Nedved after their confident 4-1 win in Sweden, "as to not qualify would mean throwing a season away. But we proved our worth here, as scoring four goals away isn't easy."

The Czech has not set foot on the field in a competitive match since the Euro 2004 semi-final, but bagged a decisive goal at Djurgarden. "I didn't expect to play almost the whole game, but after the first half-hour I had no problems at all."

"There are many things that need to be worked on, especially as this was my first game in two months, but I believe this team can go far. Now that we have qualified for the tournament, I trust Juventus can reach the Champions' League Final."

Many believed that the Bianconeri's transfer campaign has been stunted only so that they could await confirmation of their spot in Europe.

"I don't think we need adjustments," insisted director general Luciano Moggi, "as all the work we needed to do on the transfer market has been done. We may not be a super-star squad that can win every game, but we are a competitive side that can play against anyone."

The Turin giants have mainly sold off star names this summer - such as Marco Di Vaio and Enzo Maresca - but reports continue to link them with Daniele Bonera, Massimo Oddo, Cesar and Marek Jankulovski.

"Many clubs have put themselves on the edge of bankruptcy, so we will work on what it is possible to do while still ensuring everyone gets paid at the end of the month."

Moggi also laid into the doubters who claimed the entire club should be restructured after the dismal 2-2 first leg result.

"I was always relaxed, as we were well aware that we are better than the first leg performance. Only a few hundred doubters wanted to see Juventus fail, but today they saw what we are capable of - a convincing result and some great football."

Juventus, Inter, Milan and Roma will go into the draw for the Champions' League group phase on Thursday afternoon.

Juventus in multi-player swap talks with Lazio

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi held talks yesterday with Lazio president Claudio Lotito over defensive pair Massimo Oddo and Cesar. "There's still time to make some important signings in the summer market," said Moggi.

Lotito is interested in a multiple swap arrangement for Cesar and Oddo and Juve has offered Marcelo Zalayeta, Mark Iuliano and Giorgio Chellini in exchange.

Juventus tracking Ajax rebel Trabelsi

Tribal Football

Juventus are keeping tabs on Hatem Trabelsi's situation at Ajax. The Tunisia international has been told to train with the club's reserve-team by Ajax coach Ronald Koeman after failing to front for senior training earlier this week.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger confirmed yesterday that he was keen on Trabelsi, who can be signed for around £3 million. Juve director general Luciano Moggi is also interested, with Trabelsi's signing allowing Lilian Thuram to move into a central defensive position this season.

Spurs line up £6M bid for Argie star Tevez

Tribal Football

Tottenham are preparing a £6million bid for Argentine sensation Carlos Tevez. Spurs technical chief Frank Arnesen had scouts watch the Boca Juniors ace tear Italy apart in this week's Olympic Games semifinal.

But Boca are likely to demand around £10m for the player - who has certainly lived up to his billing in the Olympic soccer tournament. He has banged in seven goals in five games and his Argentina side are in Saturday's final, where they will meet Paraguay.

Roma duo worry Lippi

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi admits he will probably have to do without Antonio Cassano and Francesco Totti for the World Cup qualifiers after a dismal comeback.

The two stars have barely set foot on the playing field since Euro 2004 due to a series of injuries and made their debuts during today's 2-1 friendly defeat to Perugia.

Cassano played 45 minutes and was clearly a long way from match fitness, while captain Totti surprised many with his anxious and argumentative attitude throughout the game.

The Roma captain will not be available for the Norway match on September 4 due to the ban handed down during the European Championships, but could step on to the field against Moldova four days later.

"Considering this was their first real game," noted Italy boss Lippi, "they moved relatively well in the August heat. Simone Perrotta has also struggled to gain match fitness after a late transfer from Parma to Roma."

"As for the Italy squad, a Coach must make his selections based on club form."

It is increasingly unlikely that the two Giallorossi stars will be ready for the Norway game on September 4, but there are also problems for Roma.

They have struggled throughout the summer and this 2-1 setback to Serie B outfit Perugia highlighted new worries. Traianos Dellas was particularly upset at his substitution, fuelling reports the Euro 2004 winner is set for a Premiership switch.

Marco Delvecchio's tap-in came between Perugia's goals for Mascara and Sedivec, but in the closing stages Olivier Dacourt limped off with a suspected sprained knee.

If the initial diagnosis is confirmed, the former Leeds United midfielder will be sidelined for a month.

Expect more Juve signings

Football Italia

Juventus are still planning to make additions to their squad before the transfer window closes.

"We have put together a very strong group of players and we are ready to improve it," Vice-president Roberto Bettega told the Tuttosport newspaper. "Our market operations are not over. We can still do something even if we have already spent more than anyone to bring in Kapo, Chiellini, Emerson and Zebina."

Critics claim that the Old Lady need a new central defender given their difficulties at the back last season.

"Everyone is aware that we conceded 42 goals last term but I think that was down to the general form of the squad which was lower than expected," added the legend. "That is why we decided to bring in Fabio Capello as boss because he is good at getting players back to their best."

The former Italian international is looking for Fabrizio Miccoli and Alex Del Piero to live up to their potential.

"We have great belief in Miccoli," he added. "This is the year where he must take that next step in quality. Del Piero? He seems very calm to me and I hope that he has an outstanding season for us."

Bettega's final thoughts were dedicated to Wednesday's Champions' League tie at Djungarden. Juventus must win tomorrow night to qualify after they were surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw in Turin first-leg.

"It will be tough in Sweden so we will have to play a perfect game," concluded the Bianconeri official.

Inzaghino set for Juve

Football Italia

Reports are gathering pace that Lazio ace Simone Inzaghi will leave the capital club for Juventus. New Biancocelesti chief Claudio Lotito would like to keep the striker, but his contract expires in 2005 and an agreement regarding an extension has yet to be reached.

Juve are believed to be keen on the international after the sale of Marco Di Vaio and the failure to sign Adrian Mutu from Chelsea.

Reports suggest that the Turin giants will offer both defender Mark Iuliano and striker Marcelo Zalayeta in return for Inzaghi. The former Piacenza star could now follow in the footsteps of his brother Pippo who also wore the Bianconeri jersey.

Juve Vice-president Roberto Bettega confirmed today that the club were still hoping to sign new faces this summer. While other reports in the peninsula claim that Inzaghi was actually spotted in Turin on Monday with Juve veteran Ciro Ferrara.

Meanwhile, Juventus have also been linked with a swoop for Argentine midfielder Matias Almeyda. The 31-year-old, who recently rejected a move to Indipendiente, is a free agent after his contract at Inter expired. Brescia are also keen on the former Lazio man.

Agent confirms Juventus talks for Lazio's Oddo

Tribal Football

The agent of Lazio fullback Massimo Oddo has confirmed talks have opened with Juventus. Alessandro Moggi said: "There's always been real interest from the Bianconeri. Lazio wants a serious proposal that can guarantee them solutions from both the technical and economic point of view."

Indeed, Juve know they must come up with a cash-plus-player offer to land Oddo in the coming days.

AC Milan, Juventus seek new talks with Ajax's Ibrahimovic

Tribal Football

Ajax striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is being linked with talks with AC Milan and Juventus. The Swedish international insists he is happy at Ajax and is happy to see out his contract with the Dutch club, which expires at the end of this season.

Italian media reports state both Milan and Juve officials will be in Amsterdam for meetings with the player and his agent this week.

Arsenal linked as Juventus leave out Appiah

Tribal Football

The future of Juventus midfielder Stephen Appiah is in doubt. The Ghana international was not included in Juve's squad for the Champions League qualifier with Djurgardens, fueling speculation that the midfielder was left out so he wouldn't be Cup-tied.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger rates the youngster very highly, while Lazio are also keen. Appiah has made no secret that he wants to be playing regularly this season.

Milan take Coloccini off market

Tribal Football

AC Milan trainer Carlo Ancelotti has decided to take defender Fabricio Coloccini off the market. The Argentina international is attracting interest from Liverpool and Villarreal, but Ancelotti has decided he wants to hold onto the youngster.

Lazio make Jimenez contact

Football Italia

Lazio are interested in signing Ternana ace Luis Jimenez, according to the South American's agent. The Chilean midfielder has caught the eye of a number of First Division clubs with Lazio the latest to make contact.

"The Biancocelesti are keen on him and we are waiting to see what happens," said Beppe Galli. "Brescia already offered £1.2m for half of his contract recently but Ternana decided to turn it down."

The youngster, an attacking midfielder, is a key man at the Serie B club who want to keep hold of him. "Jimenez is untouchable," director general Poerio Mascella said recently. "We are only prepared to give a club an option on him for next summer."

Meanwhile, Galli has also revealed that Jimenez's teammate Houssine Kharja is wanted by Lazio too. "They are keeping a close eye on him," continued the representative. "He was also very close to joining Parma recently."

New capital chief Claudio Lotito has maintained that he will add some new faces to the squad before the transfer window closes next week.

Italy 0-3 Argentina

Football Italia

Italy's dreams of Olympic Gold are over after a 3-0 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals. Claudio Gentile's boys battled well but their opponents deserved the victory after another impressive Athens display.

Argentina went into the game as clear favourites for victory given their run in the tournament to date. They had won all four of their matches with the aid of 13 goals for and none against. The Azzurrini knew they would have to give their very best to compete with such a star studded side.

Italy started brightly as a quick Pirlo free-kick saw Daniele Bonera fire in a dangerous low cross after just three minutes but nobody could get a touch to it. Gilardino, often isolated in attack, then tried his luck from outside of the area yet his right-footed drive was controlled by Lux.

It was the South Americans who took control of the first half though thanks to their technical skill and Italy's rather cautious 4-5-1 formation. Heinze almost scored on eight minutes when he glanced a header towards goal before they took the lead in the 16th minute.

Matteo Ferrari failed to effectively clear a cross and his soft header fell to danger man Carlos Tevez. The Boca star thumped his volley past a helpless Ivan Pelizzoli in the Azzurrini net. Tevez later found the back of the net again in the first period but it was ruled out for offside.

Italy were only proving a danger at set-pieces. Bovo saw his headed effort just finish wide of the post and a Pirlo curler also ended up in the stands. Argentina could have easily extended their lead but the tricky D'Alessandro saw all three of his efforts dealt with by Pelizzoli.

Gentile made two substitutions at the break by bringing on Marco Donadel and Simone Del Nero. The latter made an instant impact as Italy pressed for the equaliser. They perhaps should have got one on 53 minutes when Delgado brought down Bonera in the box but no penalty was given.

On 59 minutes Pinzi had a great opportunity to trouble the 'keeper but his header flew way over the bar from a favourable position. Pirlo then worried Argentina with a splendid free-kick but it ended up on the roof of the net.

Italy were committing more and more men forward and it cost them on 69 minutes. The ball landed to Tevez who took advantage of the two on two situation by playing in Luis Gonzalez. The player powered the ball into the top corner to make it 2-0.

Bovo almost reduced the deficit but Argentina finished the game off with a third. They split open the Azzurrini defence with three passes as Tevez's cross was tapped in by Mariano Gonzalez - a second half substitute.

Italy will now do battle for the bronze medal on Friday when they will face either Iraq or Paraguay.

Italy: Pelizzoli, Moretti, Bovo, Ferrari, Bonera, Pinzi (Gasbarroni 72), De Rossi (Donadel 46), Palombo, Sculli (Del Nero 46), Pirlo, Gilardino.

Argentina: Lux, Ayala, Coloccini (Medina 69) , Heinze, Kily Gonzalez (Mariano Gonzalez 81), Mascherano, Luis Gonzalez, D`Alessandro, Rosales, Tevez, Delgado (Rodriguez 54).

Olympics: Gentile has no regrets

Football Italia

Italy's bid for a gold medal was ended by a superior Argentine side, but Claudio Gentile maintains he would do it all again.

"Given the chance," commented the Coach after the 3-0 semi-final drubbing, "I would make the same choices. We all knew that Argentina were a cut above everyone else in this competition."

Italy had been among the favourites for the Olympic gold after their European Championship triumph in May, but they had no response for Argentina.

"We did all that we could against an opponent that was clearly better and I don't see what more the lads could have done. This Argentina side has seven or eight players who are already a regular part of the senior squad."

Among the familiar names on show were Carlos Tevez, Inter's Kily Gonzalez, sometime Juventus transfer target Andres D'Alessandro, former Milan man Fabian Ayala and Manchester United's new signing Gabriel Heinz.

Nonetheless, Gentile maintains that the Azzurrini were in the running for the Final slot until the closing stages. Above all, there was controversy when Daniele Bonera appeared to be tripped in the box when the scoreline was still 1-0.

"It seems we just don't get given penalties," mused the Coach. Indeed, Italy have not received a spot-kick in their last 13 official games at Under-21 level.

"Now we need to recover quickly, both physically and psychologically, because our Olympic bid is not over. The clash for the Bronze medal is an important one we want to win."

Italy will take on Iraq for the Bronze medal on Friday after Paraguay earned their spot in the Final.

Juve have Buffon doubt

Football Italia

Goalkeeper Gigi Buffon is an injury concern for Juventus' Champions' League game on Wednesday. The 'keeper has been named in the squad for the Djurgarden trip even if he missed training on Monday.

It is believed that the Italian international is struggling with a shoulder problem which has hampered him in the past. Pavel Nedved is included for the Swedish match after he successfully recovered from a knee injury.

Players absent include Stephan Appiah - after just returning from the Olympics - the injured Mark Iuliano and Mauro Camoranesi, plus the suspended Jonathan Zebina.

"We need to win," says Lilian Thuram after the surprise 2-2 first-leg draw in Turin. "We may be conceding too many goals but it is just important to score one more than our opposition."

The Bianconeri haven't been too impressive so far this term but the stopper insists they can improve.

"It is too soon to judge us as we have played very few games so far," he continued. "In the first leg we lacked the necessary aggression until we went 2-0 down.

"If we don't win this game then we could ruin a great chunk of the new campaign. That is something that we can't afford to do. Nedved? He is fundamental for us, even when he is not 100 per cent fit. But he'll only play if he is up to it physically."

Squad: Buffon, Ferrara, Tacchinardi, Montero, Tudor, Legrottaglie, Pessotto, Emerson, Miccoli, Del Piero, Nedved, Chimenti, Birindelli, Trezeguet, Zambrotta, Blasi, Thuram, Bonnefoi, Kapo, Olivera, Zalayeta.

Nedved ready to return

Football Italia

Pavel Nedved has declared himself fit enough to play in Juventus' crucial Champions' League tie this week. The Bianconeri must win at Djurgarden on Wednesday to qualify after a surprise 2-2 draw in Turin.

Nedved missed the first leg with the injury he sustained at Euro 2004 but he's now available for selection after appearing at the weekend. The Czech ace featured in the 5-0 win over Berretti and impressed boss Fabio Capello with a decent display.

"My knee gave me no problems even if I still need to understand how fit I am right now," stated the European Footballer of the Year. "I'm still working very hard in an effort to keep improving even if the team is still strong without me.

"I'm not irreplaceable for Juventus and all that matters is that the club make it into the Champions' League."

Capello stated: "I was pleased with Nedved even if I will have to assess what part he will play in Sweden." Whispers suggest that the midfielder will start though, with the tactician set to field a 4-4-2 formation.

Probable line-up: Buffon; Birindelli, Thuram, Montero, Zambrotta; Blasi, Emerson, Tacchinardi, Nedved; Del Piero, Trezeguet.

Juventus to launch £8M bid for Man City's Anelka

Tribal Football

Juventus are preparing a bid for Manchester City striker Nicolas Anelka. The Daily Mirror says Juve are set to make an £8 million offer for the French international this week. Juve director general Luciano Moggi has turned to Anelka after failing to prise Christian Vieri away from Inter Milan.

Moggi is aware that Anelka is keen to leave Eastlands and has been keeping tabs on AS Monaco's failed bid to land the striker on a season-long loan.

Appiah to leave Juve?

Football Italia

There are doubts over Stephen Appiah's Juventus future as he's being linked with an exit. The Ghanaian international was only signed from Brescia last summer but he's struggled to perform consistently in Turin.

It had seemed as if the youngster would remain but he's now being associated with two clubs in particular. Reports suggest that the midfielder has been offered to Arsenal in a bid to sign defender Sol Campbell.

Yet the African, who has just appeared with his national side at the Olympic Games, may remain in Italy. It is believed that Lazio are interested in netting him which would open the door for Juve to sign both Massimo Oddo and Simone Inzaghi.

Oddo is wanted as the club's new right-back after the decision by Fabio Capello to use Lilian Thuram in the centre. Inzaghi is being targeted given that the sale of Marco Di Vaio has only left the club with David Trezeguet, Alex Del Piero, Fabrizio Miccoli and Marcelo Zalayeta in attack.

Tottenham continue talks with Juventus defender Tudor

Tribal Football

Tottenham continue to be linked with Juventus defender Igor Tudor. Juve have accepted a £2 million offer for Tudor, but Spurs are still to convince him about a move to White Hart Lane.

Negotiations are understood to have dragged on over personal terms, with the Croatia international having already spoken with the London club several times about a move to England.

Gentile wants 1982 repeat

Football Italia

Claudio Gentile has looked back to the 1982 World Cup for inspiration ahead of Tuesday's Olympic Games clash with Argentina. Not many are expecting the Azzurrini to win tomorrow's semi-final but the tactician insists history proves they can defeat the favourites.

"The build up to this game is similar to that one in '82," said the former Italy defender. "No one gave us a chance of winning but we beat them. It will be like going back in time for me but that won't be the case for my players, some of whom were not even born back then."

However, the last time that the two nations met in a semi-final, it was Argentina who progressed on penalties in the 1990 World Cup.

"This is the first time during my time as Coach that we are going into a game as real underdogs," added the legend. "But we will be looking to cause them problems. We have great respect for them but no fear."

Argentina have won all of their four games in the tournament so far by scoring 13 and conceding none. Italy's passage has been rather more complicated, with only an extra-time victory over Mali in the last round.

"They are an extremely talented team in which everyone of their players is technically very good," continued Gentile. "It will be a totally different game from the Mali match as they looked to cause us difficulties with their power and determination."

Gentile was giving little away with regards to his formation but Daniele De Rossi will return after suspension.

Argentina (probable): Lux; Coloccini, Ayala, Heinze; L.Gonzales, Mascherano, Kily; D'Alessandro; Rosales, Tevez, Delgado.

Italy (probable): Pelizzoli; Bonera, Ferrari, Bovo, Moretti; Pinzi, De Rossi, Pirlo, Palombo, Sculli; Gilardino.

Juventus turn to Inter Milan's Cannavaro

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi will attempt to sign Fabio Cannavaro from Inter Milan this week. Top defensive target Sol Campbell is now expected to re-sign with Arsenal, after boss Arsene Wenger ruled out selling the defender yesterday.

Moggi is now focusing his efforts on Cannavaro, who is in limbo after seeing a proposed move to Real Madrid fail to come to anything after the Spanish giants chose Jonathan Woodgate over the Italy skipper.

Cannavaro has made no secret of his desire to join Juve and Moggi is now set to hold serious talks with Inter about signing the 30 year-old, who has been made available by the Milan giants for a modest £3 million transfer.

Juventus rival Man City, Newcastle for Desailly

Tribal Football

Juventus are stepping up their interest for out-of-contract Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly. The Frenchman has also been in contact with Manchester City and Newcastle United since declaring he wants to play on this season.

Juve coach Fabio Capello wants an experienced centre-half and is considering Desailly after failing to prise Sol Campbell away from Arsenal. Newcastle want Desailly as a readymade replacement for Jonathan Woodgate, while City have already offered the 36 year-old a one-year, pay-as-you-play contract.

Inter Milan to beat Spurs, Juventus for Jankulovski

Tribal Football

Inter Milan have struck an agreement with Udinese for midfielder Marek Jankulovski. Despite rival competition from Juventus and Tottenham, Inter officials are confident they have clinched Jankulovski's transfer - with an announcement likely to be made after the Champions League qualifier against FC Basel.

The key to the deal is Giovanni Pasquale, who will be included in Inter's offer for Jankulovski. The Milan giants have also agreed the 12-month loan of one of Giorgis Karagounis or Beati.

Olympics: Italy escape fight ban

Football Italia

The Azzurrini will not receive any suspensions after a fight broke out with Mali's players, while there is an injury update on Alberto Gilardino. There were fears that several stars would be forced to miss out on Tuesday's semi-final with Argentina following an incident at the weekend.

Italy edged out Mali in extra time thanks to Cesare Bovo's header, but the post-match celebrations degenerated with reports that the local police was forced to intervene in order to pull the players apart.

"There will be no disciplinary action taken against the Italian players," explained FIFA spokesman Alann Leiblang, "because the referee's report did not mention any wrong-doing."

Claudio Gentile's men will have midfielder Daniele De Rossi back from his suspension to face Argentina on Tuesday, but doubts remain over the fitness of Alberto Gilardino.

The Parma striker suffered a bruised left shin during the 1-0 win over Mali, although initial doctor's reports suggest he will be able to start the Olympic semi-final.

For once the reigning European Champions will be underdogs, as Argentina have been on fine form throughout the tournament and disposed of Costa Rica 4-0 in the quarters, including a hat-trick from Boca Juniors star Carlos Tevez.

Nedved back in the saddle

Football Italia

Pavel Nedved has returned to the playing field, while the Agnelli family reassure fans they will not abandon Juventus. The Czech international has been out of action since suffering a knee injury during the Euro 2004 semi-final defeat to Greece, but played 45 minutes in a friendly game yesterday evening.

The 5-0 victory over Berretti boosted confidence and fitness levels ahead of next week's crucial Champions' League qualifier against Djurgarden. Alessandro Del Piero was on target along with David Trezeguet, Olivier Kapo and Marcelo Zalayeta's brace.

However, the lack of major new signings this summer has caused unrest within the Juve fanbase, as the death of the Agnelli brothers Gianni and Umberto has seen the family pull away from its close rapport with the club.

"My father Umberto and my uncle Gianni were always very close to Juve," explained Andrea Agnelli, "because this side is like a genetic part of our family. We will continue the tradition they created."

Yesterday's traditional friendly game at the Villar Perosa training ground was the first in many decades without either of the two honorary Presidents. Andrea Agnelli may not have the presence of those figureheads, but he insists he will keep a close eye on the club.

It is a particularly tricky time for the Bianconeri, who finished last season without a single trophy and must win in Sweden on Wednesday to enter the Champions' League.

"We respect Djurgarden, but also realise our own potential. Hopefully we will also have Nedved back, as he can always give a telling contribution."

The supporters continue to await the revival of another player, captain Alessandro Del Piero, who has disappointed so far this summer.

"He is an extraordinary person and will be back stronger than ever," assured Agnelli. "The transfer campaign has been a good one and we are convinced that Juventus are just as good as any other side in Serie A."

Juve lose out on Jankulovski?

Football Italia

Reports this afternoon suggest that Juve have been beaten to the signature of Marek Jankulovski by Inter.

The Udinese winger has long been linked with both clubs, but Juventus failed to agree terms with the Stadio Friuli outfit. The Nerazzurri then dived in with their own proposal and it seems as if their negotiations have proved more fruitful.

While Juve tried to hold back Giorgio Chiellini from this deal, Inter are ready to hand over fullback Giovanni Pasquale plus either youngster Nicola Beati or Euro 2004 winner Giorgios Karagounis. It is possible the deal will be confirmed after Tuesday's Champions' League qualifier with Basel.

Jankulovski is a familiar figure to Serie A as a left-sided winger for Napoli and then Udinese, but the versatile 27-year-old plays as a fullback for the Czech Republic.

He is not the only Friuli star to be in the transfer headlines, as there are rumours that Fiorentina are making a play for Martin Jorgensen. The Dane had seemed set for either Inter or Juventus last season, but Viola director Fabrizio Lucchesi is taking advantage of this lull in interest.

Olympics: Gentile hails Semi stars

Football Italia

Claudio Gentile has praised the Azzurrini's character and comments on reports the post-match celebrations turned into a riot, but Alberto Gilardino is injured. It took 115 minutes of football and a saved penalty before Italy could get the better of Mali in today's Olympic quarter-final.

"To win with a struggle is often an enjoyable part of football," noted the Coach, "but the important thing was to take home the result and we did that with a good performance."

It was a tough game physically and hitman Gilardino got the worst of it. He suffered bruising to his left shin and is considered a risk for Tuesday's semi-final. This is the first time that Italy have reached the final four of the Olympics since Seoul in 1988, where they finished fourth.

However, this will have done little to deflect the criticism that has poured on to the squad throughout this tournament, as the Italian press is unimpressed with their style of play.

"We made a few changes, including tactical ones. The lads wanted to prove themselves after a disappointing group phase and today they showed that they are a competitive squad."

There are reports that the post-match celebrations degenerated into a riot when Italian and Mali players clashed on their way back to the dressing room. It is claimed that the Azzurrini were still celebrating their 1-0 win in extra time when they were attacked by several of their opponents, forcing the local police to intervene.

"I was there," revealed Gentile, "and saw some pushing and shoving, but there was really nothing more than that."

Italy will take on Argentina, who hammered Costa Rica 4-0, on Tuesday afternoon with a 3pm UK time kick-off. Iraq beat Australia 1-0 in the other tie and will play Paraguay, who saw off South Korea 3-2.

Juventus will bid £6.5M for Arsenal's Campbell

Tribal Football

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi is prepared to offer Arsenal £6,5 million for defender Sol Campbell. Moggi is also willing to include Ghana international midfielder Stephen Appiah in the deal. The 24 year-old is rated at £2.5 million.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger rates Appiah highly, but is insistent that he won't allow Campbell to leave. The sticking point for Arsenal directors is that Campbell is still to commit to a new contract and he could sign a pre-contract with Juve as early as January.

Arsenal are said to be asking £10 million cash for the 30 year-old, who is Moggi's No1 target before the summer transfer window shuts.

Juve launch Cesar bid

Football Italia

Juventus still haven't given up the hope of signing Lazio star Aparecido Cesar this summer. Inter are believed to be in pole position for the left-sided player but reports today claim that the Bianconeri are still in the chase.

With Inter failing to agree terms with Lazio so far, as President Giacinto Facchetti has hinted, Juve could swoop. However, the Old Lady's attempts to convince the capital outfit to sell is rather complicated.

Whispers suggest that Juve will first net Rodrigo Taddei from Siena and then instantly offer him to the Olimpico outfit as part of the deal to sign Cesar. Taddei is currently in dispute with the Tuscan club and is keen for a move - even if his first choice is Roma.

But the talented midfielder is liked by the Biancocelesti who could be tempted to do a deal with the Turin giants.

Cesar too would be open to a Juventus switch. "He wants to play for a top club," said agent Gilmar Veloz. There is no difference between Inter and Juventus for him. It is simply up to Lazio to decide."

There is also the possibility that Taddei may be used as a bargaining tool for two other Lazio players instead. Juve are known to be keen on right-back Massimo Oddo and striker Simone Inzaghi. The latter would replace Marco Di Vaio - who was sold to Valencia last month.

Trez: Juve will not fail

Football Italia

Juventus must win in Sweden next week to enter the Champions' League and David Trezeguet is certain there will be no more slip-ups.

"We are not afraid," assured the Frenchman after their 2-2 home draw with Djurgarden. "This side had the experience needed to progress into the tournament proper and we want that qualification spot. This is the day of reckoning."

The Bianconeri have been far from impressive throughout the summer, with defensive frailties and a lack of goals in their friendly outings. Above all, the form of captain Alessandro Del Piero has been cause for concern.

"We have worked very hard since that August 10 game and only now are we at the right fitness levels. I am a big fan of Alex and can see how much he wants to prove himself this year. I think he will be a crucial factor in this tie."

Although a high-scoring draw of 3-3 or above would see Juve through on the away goals rule, a victory is really needed in Stockholm this coming Wednesday.

"It was a very strange game at the Delle Alpi," added Trezeguet. "Something was amiss in our whole approach, but we will not fail again."

There is stiff competition for places, with Pavel Nedved perhaps ready after a knee injury in Euro 2004, while Fabrizio Miccoli impressed in Italy's 2-0 defeat to Iceland midweek.

Juve raise Campbell stakes

Football Italia

The Bianconeri have pinpointed Sol Campbell as the key to solving their defensive worries and have offered £7m plus Stephen Appiah.

Juventus had one of their worst defensive records in recent memory last season, letting in 42 goals in 34 games, and the shock 2-2 draw with Djurgarden only highlighted the need for changes.

Although names such as Fabio Cannavaro and Massimo Oddo have been mentioned, it seems that Fabio Capello has his heart set on the experience of England international Campbell.

It is now reported that the Turin side has offered £7m cash plus the services of Ghanaian international Stephen Appiah, who is on his way home following their exit from the Athens Olympics.

Arsenal were hoping to keep hold of the 30-year-old defender, but would be willing to accept a switch if Juventus raise their bid to £10m.

There is room for manoeuvre here and director general Luciano Moggi is trying to whittle down the price tag based on Campbell's recent injury problems. It must also be noted that the former Spurs man has not yet penned a new contract.

Another option is Fabio Cannavaro, whose deal with Inter also expires in June 2005. The Nerazzurri star was originally offered to Real Madrid, but could now be exchanged with Juventus winger Mauro German Camoranesi.

Juventus chiefs in London for Arsenal's Campbell

Tribal Football

Juventus powerbrokers Roberto Bettega and Luciano Moggi were in London yesterday for talks with Arsenal. Juve director general Moggi is determined to prise Sol Campbell away from Highbury, well aware that the England international centre-half is still to sign a new contract.

Campbell's current deal expires next summer and Juve are prepared to offer £6 million plus Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah in exchange for the centre-half. For their part, Arsenal scouted Appiah at this month's Athens Games and manager Arsene Wenger is said to have received glowing reports.

However, the Frenchman is desperate not to lose Campbell and will resist any offer from Juve for the 30 year-old.

Juventus have clear run at Lazio's Cesar

Tribal Football

Inter Milan are ready to drop out of the running for Lazio wing-back Cesar. Inter are battling Juventus for the Brazilian international, who is determined to leave Lazio before the start of the season.

"(Lazio president) Claudio Lotito is making it very difficult for us in negotiations," said Inter president Giacinto Facchetti. "He keeps changing the fee for Cesar. His behaviour doesn't lend itself to smooth negotiations."

Juventus WILL ask Inter Milan about Zanetti

Tribal Football

Juventus intend to approach Inter Milan this weekend for midfielder Cristiano Zanetti. Inter director general Marco Branca insisted this week that Zanetti was not for sale, but Juve counterpart Luciano Moggi is determined to test their resolve over the Italian international.

Juve coach Fabio Capello wants to bring Zanetti to Turin and its understood the midfielder is keen to see the deal happen.

Juventus watch as Inter Milan president invites offers for Cannavaro

Tribal Football

Inter Milan president Giacinto Facchetti has confirmed he is prepared to listen to offers for defender Fabio Cannavaro. Real Madrid were lining up the Italy captain this week before striking an agreement with Newcastle United for defender Jonathan Woodgate.

Facchetti admitted: "If Real Madrid make us an interesting offer then we will consider it. For now, though, there has been no developments on that front." Juventus are keeping tabs on the situation and are likely to make a formal approach for Cannavaro next week.
