No problems for Zambrotta

Footbal Italia

Juventus have been boosted with the news that Gianluca Zambrotta will be fit to face Djurgarden next week.

The international left-back limped out of Italy's 2-0 defeat to Iceland last night with a leg injury. However, the defender has undergone a number of tests today which have ruled out any major problems.

Zambrotta will be available for the crucial Champions' League tie at Djurgarden on Wednesday. The Old Lady of Italian football need to win in Sweden after they were surprisingly held to a 2-2 draw in the Turin first leg.

Meanwhile, Pavel Nedved's recovery from Euro 2004 injury continues in the hope that he can at least be on the bench for the tie.

Miguel dreaming of Juve

Footbal Italia

Luis Miguel admits he is interested in a move to Juventus even though Benfica have ruled out his sale.

"I'm aware that Juventus are keen on me and that is great to know," said the Euro 2004 player. "I wouldn't have any problems in staying with Benfica but if Juve really want me then I wouldn't turn them down."

The Bianconeri are after a new right-back and Miguel did impress for Portugal over the summer. The Turin giants reportedly recently made a £7m offer but Giovanni Trapattoni's club turned it down.

"I can confirm that we have been contacted by Juventus but we told them that none of our players are for sale," stated club official Jose Veiga.

"We want this whole story to end here because Miguel is not available for transfer. There is no room for discussion."

The only other option for the Bianconeri is Lazio full-back Massimo Oddo who seems to be eager for a Turin switch. However, the capital club's excessive asking price for the defender has put the brakes on any proposed move.

Oddo staying at Lazio

Footbal Italia

Massimo Oddo has committed his future to Lazio despite confirmed transfer interest from Juventus. The right-back is wanted by the Turin giants but he has denied recent reports that he is desperate for a switch.

"Some of my phrases have been misinterpreted," he stated after arriving back from international duty. "I've never even dreamed of saying that I want to leave nor have I asked for someone to call Juventus.

"I'm honoured to be a Lazio player and it is my intention to continue with my career in Rome. Asking the President to sell me is not an option."

However, the former Verona defender did still leave the door slightly open for a summer exit.

"I would only go if the President asked me to leave for the good of the club," he continued. "Saying that, I hope that he manages to build a competitive side this season because the fans deserve it."

Lazio's financial difficulties have already led to the sales of Jaap Stam, Bernardo Corradi and Stefano Fiore amongst many others. But Oddo, and Inter target Cesar, have remained at the club for the time being.

Juventus linked with Man City target Desailly

Tribal Football

Juventus have been linked with former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly. Juve coach Fabio Capello wants to add an experienced centre-half to his squad before the Serie A kicks off and Desailly has intimated he'd welcome a return to Italy.

Desailly has been tabled a pay-as-you-play deal by Manchester City, but may delay his decision to wait to see what Juve are prepared to offer.

Chelsea's Mutu: Juventus decision is left to me

Tribal Football

Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu insists he is staying at Stamford Bridge, despite renewed interest arriving from Juventus.

"Here at Chelsea there is an optimal atmosphere, a very professional one," said Mutu. "Mourinho knows what he wants and his training is tough, but also not boring - and good fun. The trainer is very modern.

"Going to Juventus was a possibility. My agent spoke to both clubs and came to London to speak with me. But if ever the two clubs come to an agreement, the final decision will be made by me."

Real Madrid, Man Utd scout Bonera

Tribal Football

Real Madrid and Manchester United are among clubs to be following Parma fullback Daniele Bonera at this month's Athens Games.

After starring with Italy's U21 European Championship winning team earlier this summer, Bonera has carried on his form into the Olympics.

The right-back is being scouted by both United and Real Madrid, though neither club will bid for the youngster until January at the earliest. Bonera is also a prime target for Juventus and AS Roma.

Inter Milan chief denies Juventus talks over Zanetti, Cruz

Tribal Football

Inter Milan director general Marco Branca has denied reports linking Cristiano Zanetti and Julio Cruz with Juventus.

"There has been no negotiations with Juventus," said Branca last night. "The transfer of these two players is impossible. Both players are considered very important members of the squad."

Lippi forgets Iceland loss

Footbal Italia

New Italy boss Marcello Lippi has quickly archived Wednesday's shock 2-0 defeat to Iceland. "It is a waste of time crying about it," said the tactician. "We must simply work hard and wait for us to reach our right condition.

"The defeat certainly hurts, especially as it was my debut, but you don't become a great side by winning all of the time. We simply need to be patient even if the most important thing is to win when the three points are up for grabs."

The serious games are just around the corner though as Italy open their World Cup campaign against Norway on September 4.

"I will pick players who offer me the most guarantees," added Lippi. "That even includes Milan's Alessandro Costacurta (now 38) if necessary."

However, Lippi is likely to welcome back a host of first team regulars such as Vieri, Totti, Cassano, Del Piero, Cannavaro and Pirlo who all missed last night's game.

"Totti? If he is in good shape then he will be called - even if he'll only be available for the Moldova game four days later due to suspension," noted the tactician.

"Del Piero? He will be evaluated too. In the next 10 days I am waiting to see an improvement in everyone."

Although the Azzurri struggled against Iceland, Lippi is remaining cool and calm about the future.

"I didn't think that I would construct a new side in just two days, I'm not stupid," he commented. "I need time and we may lose in the future too. But there will be occasions when we won't have these difficulties."

Gentile denies Pirlo rift

Footbal Italia

Under-21 boss Claudio Gentile has dismissed talk of any problems between himself and Andrea Pirlo. The Olympic Games Coach replaced the Milan man last night just days after publicly asking more from the player.

But the tactician insists that his decision to substitute him in the 1-0 loss to Paraguay was tactical.

"Andrea was tired and I needed a player who had the ability to win a few more balls in midfield," he explained.

The creative midfielder is one of the three over-aged players in the squad but he's struggled to shine so far. However, the side have made it through to the quarter-finals despite Wednesday's defeat in Athens.

"Qualifying is a great result for us," added the former Juventus stopper. "Had we taken our chances early on then the game could have been different.

"We now face Mali in a six o'clock kick-off which will be difficult as they will be more used to the heat than us."

Inter issue Juventus denial

Football Italia

The Nerazzurri have issued an official statement to deny reports of a swap deal involving Cristiano Zanetti, Julio Cruz and Mauro Camoranesi.

"We have no negotiations in place with Juventus," assured technical director Marco Branca on the club's official website. "These are two players who we consider important for this team," added Branca. "There is nothing more to say about the matter."

The Argentine-born winger would be a cheaper alternative to first choice target Cesar of Lazio, while Zanetti has always been one of Fabio Capello's favourite midfielders. As for Cruz, the former Bologna forward has been suggested as a reinforcement for both Roma and Lazio.

The denial was issued after newspaper reports suggested that the Bianconeri would take Italian international Zanetti in a straight swap deal with Camoranesi. Tellingly, there was no mention of the widely reported talks between Inter defender Fabio Cannavaro and Real Madrid, suggesting this is more than a mere rumour.

Meanwhile, there are new reports claiming that Inter have set an ultimatum for their on-going attempt to sign Cesar. It's believed Roberto Mancini's advisors have set out a plan whereby they will complete the Brazilian's move before August 27 or look elsewhere for a left-sided winger.

Other options open to them are Udinese's Marek Jankulovski, who seems closer to Juventus, and Santiago Solari of Real Madrid. This is a particularly unlikely scenario, as the Argentine refused a switch to the San Siro last year, prompting a long-running legal battle with Real.

Juventus to send Camoranesi to Inter Milan for Zanetti

Tribal Football

Juventus and Inter Milan are close to reaching an agreement over an Italian international swap deal. Juve wing-back Mauro Camoranesi is set to move to Inter in exchange for midfielder Cristiano Zanetti.

Midfielder Zanetti is keen to work again with coach Fabio Capello at Juve after finding himself on the outer at Inter following the summer arrivals of Juan Veron and Edgar Davids. Camoranesi is rated highly by new Inter trainer Roberto Mancini and the deal is close to being finalised.

However, Juve raised the bar in the final hours last night, asking about the possibility of Inter striker Julio Cruz joining Zanetti in moving to Turin.

Lazio want Juventus' Appiah in Oddo deal

Tribal Football

Lazio have asked Juventus to include Stephen Appiah in their offer for right-back Massimo Oddo. The Italian international has declared he wants to join Juve this season, despite rival interest from Arsenal and Inter Milan.

Juve are open to Lazio's proposal, with Ghana ace Appiah having already told coach Fabio Capello that he would rather move away than spend another season on the bench in Turin.

Juventus to offer £6M for Seville starlet Daniel

Tribal Football

Juventus are preparing a major raid for Seville fullback Daniel Alves. The Brazilian U23 international is regarded as Cafu's understudy with his national team and captained his country at this year's World Championships in the UAE.

Juve director general Luciano Moggi made a formal inquiry after Daniel's availability and transfer fee. Seville president Jose Maria del Nido rates Daniel at £8 million. Moggi has set aside £6 million to convince Del Nido to cash in before the summer transfer window closes.

Daniel is on a long-term deal at Seville and currently has a buy-out clause of a staggering £40 million.

Miguel catches Juve eye

Football Italia

Luis Miguel of Benfica has joined Lazio's Massimo Oddo as a contender to become the new Juventus right-back. Stories in Portugal claim that the Bianconeri have taken an interest in the player who shined at Euro 2004. It is understood that the Turin outfit have offered £7m but that bid was rejected by Giovanni Trapattoni's club.

The Turin giants are looking for a new full-back after the decision to move Lilian Thuram into the centre of their defence. They are known to be keen on Oddo but Lazio's asking price for the Italian international has blocked the move.

Other reports in the peninsula claim that the capital outfit are ready to release the defender in return for Stephen Appiah. However, Juve are only willing to allow the Ghana midfielder to move on loan and not permanently.

In other Lazio transfer whispers, sources claim that Inter will sign Cesar by August 27. The Nerazzurri will only look to close the deal once they are sure of their place in the Champions' League.

Benfica reject Juventus bid for Miguel

Tribal Football

Benfica have turned down an offer from Juventus for fullback Miguel. Juve bid £6.5 million for the Portugal international, who was also tabled a four-year contract. But the offer was dismissed by Benfica, which rate Miguel at £10 million.

"An eventual move to Juventus is something I'd welcome," Miguel said last night. "But for now, I am happy at Benfica."

Emo ruins Messina party

Football Italia

Emerson was again on target for Juventus as they beat Messina in a game played to inaugurate their new stadium. The Sicilians officially opened their 32,000-seater Stadio San Filippo last night but ended the evening as 1-0 losers.

The Brazilian midfielder, an £8m summer signing from Roma, headed home an Alex Del Piero free-kick in the 48th minute.

"I saw a few small improvements," commented Juventus boss Fabio Capello. "But it is obvious that we still need to do better." Was Capello satisfied with the much criticised defence? "I did get upset a few times because we were giving too much away," he added.

The Old Lady were without a host of first team regulars due to international commitments, but captain Del Piero did feature.

"I'm satisfied with his performance and I kept him on the field of play because he looked fresh," continued the tactician. "He's been a bit unlucky with his shooting recently but it seems to me that he is on the right track."

Iceland 2 - 0 Italy

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi's Italy debut was a dismal 2-0 defeat in Iceland, though Luca Toni and Manuele Blasi earned their first caps. Lippi made his Italy debut with this international friendly in Iceland and he made several changes to the set-up left by Giovanni Trapattoni.

The former Juve Coach left out Alessandro Del Piero due to his poor form, but was without the injured Francesco Totti, Antonio Cassano, Christian Vieri, Fabio Cannavaro, Cristiano Zanetti and Bernardo Corradi. Alberto Gilardino, Andrea Pirlo, Matteo Ferrari and Daniele Bonera were on Olympic duty.

He brought along three new faces - Luca Toni, Francesco Flachi and Manuele Blasi - but none of them were in the starting eleven.

Lippi, a former Sampdoria player, fielded two Blucerchiati from the beginning with Fabio Bazzani and Sergio Volpi, while Stefano Fiore and Marco Di Vaio made their first Italy appearances since moving to Valencia.

Former Lazio midfielder Fiore was restored to the Trequartista role he held in Euro 2000, behind strikers Di Vaio and Bazzani. Italy were wearing their new midnight blue kits for this friendly match, a warm-up for the opening 2006 World Cup qualifier against Norway on September 4.

Lippi's reign didn't get off to a great start, as some sluggish defending allowed Iceland to take the lead after 17 minutes. Gianluigi Buffon managed to parry Einarsson's effort with one hand, but could do nothing on Gudjohnsen's follow-up.

Italy hit back immediately and Stefano Fiore's angled drive was palmed out with difficulty by Kristinsson, but moments later the home side doubled their lead. Another defensive error saw Marco Materazzi's wayward intervention come off the woodwork and into the path of Einarsson.

It may have been a friendly game, but Di Vaio was furious when he was hacked down by Helguson and the Iceland international was booked.

Materazzi was lacklustre and lost the ball under pressure at the byline, but Helguson's shot was wide of the target. Iceland were very motivated and dominated these early stages of the game, with Helguson clipping his effort just over the bar with Buffon out of the running.

When fullbacks Massimo Oddo and Gianluca Zambrotta were able to whip crosses in, the tall Scandinavian defenders were almost always ready to clear from Di Vaio and Bazzani.

There were penalty appeals just before the break when Fiore rolled a great pass across the face of goal for Bazzani, but the Samp player felt he was shoved off the ball by Hreidarsson.

Di Vaio's angled drive skimmed the far post as the Azzurri finally began to push forward after a dismal first half performance.

Lippi made four changes for the second half, introducing Fabrizio Miccoli, Aimo Diana, Alessandro Birindelli and debutant Manuele Blasi in place of Oddo, Simone Perrotta, Sergio Volpi and Di Vaio. He also changed the tactical set-up for a more solid midfield.

Materazzi's poor game continued with a booking for dragging back Sigurdsson by his shirt. Another Italy player was given his first cap, as Luca Toni replaced Bazzani for the 27-year-old Palermo man's debut.

Miccoli thought he had got one back for Italy with a clever chip, but it was disallowed for a dubious offside decision. There was bad news for Juventus ahead of their Champions' League qualifier, as Gianluca Zambrotta limped off to make way for Giuseppe Favalli, but early indications suggest it is only a slight muscular problem.

Aimo Diana sprung the offside trap and went for goal instead of cutting across for the unmarked Toni. Miccoli was typically lively and turned a half-volley over the bar from Materazzi's long ball forward, then the Juve man's corner kick was nodded onto the side-netting by Diana.

Italy were having more of the play in the second half and Blasi nearly beat Aarason with a lob from 30 metres, then the substitute 'keeper rushed off his line to close down Miccoli.

Juve man Miccoli was terrorizing the Icelandic defence and fell between two players as he rushed into the box, but the referee booked him for diving despite replays suggesting there was a shove.

There was also an ugly moment when Hreidarsson was caught on camera spitting at Miccoli, an incident that escaped the eyes of the referee.

However, Iceland went close to grabbing their third in their only real chance of the second half, when Diana required a goalline clearance to keep out Helguson.

Serie B Capocannoniere Toni nearly marked his debut with a goal, as Aarason was at full stretch to fingertip his turn and volley round the post.

Miccoli continued to cause problems for the opposition and with the final kick of the game Hreidarsson's goalline clearance prevented Miccoli grabbing a consolation strike.

Lippi: I'm a lucky loser

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi looks to superstition to recover from his disastrous debut, while the players concede they just weren't good enough.

"We received those two slaps when we were actually playing fairly well, as we didn't actually start the game that badly," insisted the Coach after the 2-0 defeat in Iceland. "Two goals in quick succession were bound to knock us for six, but we got into our stride in the second half and were unlucky not to at least get one back."

The Azzurri got off to a terrible start, conceding two goals in the space of as many minutes and barely managing a shot on goal throughout the first hour.

However, there are some superstitious reasons to be content with the result. The last Italy Coach to lose his debut game was Enzo Bearzot, who went on to win the 1982 World Cup.

"I have always begun my big adventures with negative results," added the former Juventus boss, "but that's never stopped me doing well in the end."

The second half line-up was certainly more effective with Fabrizio Miccoli particularly active, and he has probably gone a long way to earning a first team spot in September's World Cup qualifier against Norway.

"We need to keep a close eye on who is in the best physical condition when laying out the names for the squad. I was content with the effort everyone put in, as right now they are unable to do any more than that."

Lippi had claimed before this match that this was "the first brick towards the World Cup", but there were few solid foundations on show in Reykjavik. "I'm certainly not going to change my ideas based on a friendly game played in August. This Italy side is a work in progress and we will learn from this experience."

Gianluigi Buffon was less comforting in his analysis of this defeat to Iceland - another Scandinavian setback after Euro 2004. "It was a bad result for Italy, but above all we are sorry we couldn't give Lippi a better debut," commented the Juventus goalkeeper.

"At least until a few years ago we could have used our lack of effort as an alibi, but when we put in everything we've got and still lose then there's clearly something wrong. All we can say is that we have limits and perhaps playing in August against such a physically strong side is not the best."

However, Buffon was clearly concerned for the future of this Italy squad after suffering through two major tournaments.

"It's a particular worry, as our next opponents for the World Cup qualifiers are Norway, so we need to work out how to get the better of these Scandinavian sides. To be perfectly honest, I think that even with our players at the peak of their fitness we still would have struggled here."

There was at least some good news in the debuts of Luca Toni and Manuele Blasi, with the Palermo man particularly impressive as a partner to Miccoli. "I'm certainly disappointed to have this result on my debut," said the 27-year-old, "but I got to play half an hour and am happy with my own performance."

Toni is the first Palermo player to make an Italy appearance since the 1970's and was proud of this achievement. "I was the one who scored the goals and therefore got the headlines, but the whole Palermo squad played brilliantly last year and earned its place in Serie A."

The Norway game on September 4 will be in Palermo's Stadio Barbera, so Toni could make his official debut in front of his home crowd. "I am pleased that the city will be welcoming international football again and if I'm not in the squad, then I will certainly be in the stands to cheer them on."

Italy 0 - 1 Paraguay

Football Italia

Italy needed a draw against Paraguay to be sure of the Quarter-Finals, but Japan's victory over Ghana ensured they go through anyway to face Mali.

The Azzurrini needed only a draw from this game to qualify for the quarter-finals and Claudio Gentile made no changes to the line-up that had played against Ghana and Japan. Paraguay were not to be underestimated, as they eliminated Brazil on the way to this competition, and ended up winning Group B.

Italy had no intention of playing for a point and should have taken the lead within the opening four minutes. Andrea Pirlo's free kick found Alberto Gilardino's header only for it to thump the frame of the goal, then a surprised Daniele De Rossi somehow managed to turn the loose ball wide from four yards.

There was a scare for Gilardino early on when he clashed knees with former Inter defender Carlos Alberto Gamarra, but he was able to carry on.

Paraguay could still qualify themselves with a victory and hit back with Gamarra's header over the bar. It was a warning sign that was not heeded and the South Americans took the lead after 13 minutes when a long Torres cross found Fredy Bareiro's angled header at the back post.

The Azzurrini fought back immediately and the Paraguayan goalkeeper rushed off his line to charge down Gilardino's strike. As the move continued with some desperate defending, the Italian defenders were furious when they believed Mansur blocked De Rossi's effort with his arm, but the referee waved away their penalty appeals.

Both sides remained dangerous as Paraguay were very fast on the counter-attack. Ivan Pelizzoli performed a simply stunning one-handed save on Bareiro's chip and Gimenez turned the loose ball over.

Paraguay were very strong in central defence and crowded Pirlo out of his shot, while Daniele Bonera was forced into a crucial challenge on the pacey Gimenez.

Italy's influence grew and Giuseppe Sculli's glancing header on Bonera's cross was just wide of the far post, then Gilardino's turn and volley was off target.

Perhaps their best chance of the half fell to Sculli in stoppages, but the completely unmarked Chievo striker ballooned his volley high and wide.

The second half started in much the same vein with De Rossi's shot charged down, but the Roma man petulantly kicked out and was booked, ruling him out of a potential quarter-final date.

They piled on the pressure and Barreto slapped away another Gilardino effort after he had chested down Pirlo's intelligent through ball.

Gentile made his first substitution on the hour mark, introducing Simone Del Nero for Sculli, as he has done throughout this tournament. However, he then threw on Palermo winger Andrea Gasbarroni for his first appearance of the Olympics. The attacking winger missed out on the European Championships in May due to the needs of his club in the Serie B promotion battle.

But Paraguay were now locked into their own half defending this slender lead, bursting forward only occasionally on the counter-attack. Gentile made a surprising final change, removing the off-form Pirlo for Sampdoria midfielder Marco Donadel.

Gasbarroni's looping cross found the head of Andrea Barzagli, but his effort was weak and plucked from the air by Barreto. Paraguay substitute Gonzalez nearly scored their second within minutes of coming on, but he skipped past Barzagli and found another splendid save from Pelizzoli.

Italy's pressure continued to come to nothing, as in the closing stages Moretti and Gilardino seemed to get in each others' way and failed to turn in from six yards.

Donadel took matters into his own hands and stung the palms of Barreto with a fierce strike from 25 metres that was heading straight for the top corner of the net.

Italy suffer their first defeat of the Olympics, but Japan's 1-0 win over Ghana ensure Paraguay go through top of Group B with the Azzurrini in the second qualifying spot. They are matched up against Mali in the quater-finals, while Paraguay play South Korea and Argentina face Costa Rica.

Juve close in on Marek

Football Italia

Udinese's Marek Jankulovski could finally become a Juventus player by the end of this week. The Czech ace has been associated with the giants for some time and a deal is reportedly on the verge of completion. Jankulovski has admitted that he would have no objection to a Turin switch but talks have been difficult.

It may have taken some time but a fee is believed to have been ironed out between the two clubs. The Bianconeri will hand over around £3.5m plus the services of U-21 international stopper Giorgio Chiellini. The latter, currently at the Olympics, was only acquired this summer from newly promoted Livorno.

Juve turned their attention to the left-sided midfielder after Lazio's Cesar indicated that he would prefer a move to Inter rather than the Delle Alpi. However, Lazio have today warned that they have no intention of giving away the Brazilian ace.

"I want six quality players for Cesar, otherwise nothing will happen," stated Lazio chief Claudio Lotito.

Miguel bid rejected

Planet Football

Benfica have reportedly rejected an offer from Juventus for highly-rated full back Luis Miguel. The Portugal international, who impressed in Euro 2004, had been one of Newcastle United's top targets before Sir Bobby Robson turned to Republic of Ireland international Stephen Carr.

Benfica have been determined to resist all approaches for their classy defender and Juve are the latest club to show an interest in his considerable talents.

The Turin giants are said to have offered around €10 million for Miguel and are keen to do business with their former coach Giovanni Trapattoni. The Italian coach could even be allowed to sign a fringe player at Stadio delle Alpi in part-exchange.

Juve boss Fabio Capello is desperate to land a new right-sided defender and is expected to continue pursuing Miguel, despite the rebuttal from Benfica. A five-year contract could await the 24-year-old in Turin but his current club will do all they can to prevent any deal going ahead.

Panucci snubs Juve option

Football Italia

Christian Panucci insists that he won't be the latest player to leave Roma for Juventus this summer. The defender has been linked with a switch given Juve's need for a new defender and his close relationship with boss Fabio Capello.

But the Italian international has announced that he has no intention of wearing the Bianconeri jersey. "I would never go to Juventus," he told journalists at the club's Trigoria training base. "You can forget about that idea."

The right-back has been signed by Capello on three occasions in the past after spells with him at Milan, Real Madrid and in the Italian capital. Speculation suggested that Capello had convinced Juve to make a bid but the player seems uninterested.

The Olimpico outfit have already lost Emerson, Jonathan Zebina and Capello to the Turin side over the last few months.

Roma won't let Panucci join Juventus

Tribal Football

AS Roma are refusing to allow defender Christian Panucci to move to Juventus. The veteran right-back is wanted by Juve coach Fabio Capello, but Roma director general Franco Baldini insists Panucci is required to guide youngsters Philippe Mexes and Matteo Ferrari this season.

Panucci, himself, does not know where he will be playing this season: "I'm not sure that I will be going to Juve now." Panucci was in Turin over the weekend for talks with Juventus officials.

Oddo ponders Lazio exit

Football Italia

Massimo Oddo says he will consider his Lazio future if he is unconvinced by the side's competitiveness. The capital outfit have lost a host of their best players this summer that has substantially weakened the side.

"I don't want to leave Lazio at all costs but I want the President to put together a good side," said the right-back.

Oddo's latest statement will please Juventus who have been tracking the defender for some time. The Old Lady have been in contact with the Stadio Olimpico outfit to make enquiries about the 28-year-old. But Oddo, who was a part of the Azzurri's Euro 2004 squad, says no transfer is imminent.

"There is nothing new to report regarding me," he added from the Italian national side's training base.

Oddo is expected to start in the Azzurri's friendly against Iceland on Wednesday, as Marcello Lippi makes his debut on the bench.

Arsenal target Oddo keen on Juventus

Tribal Football

Lazio right-back Massimo Oddo has declared he wants to join Juventus before the start of the new season. Oddo has also been linked with Arsenal, but insists: "I know that Juventus are interested, if it must happen we hope it is soon.

"At Lazio, of the players on the market, I and Cesar remain available. The president knows that if he sells us the tifosi will not accept this happily and it will create problems. But he wants to get big money from our sales.

"I sincerely do not find this as just, it complicates everything. I will never ask to leave, because if there were conditions in order to remain I would not have problems in doing so."

Zlatan denies contract talk

Planet Football

Ajax star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has moved to deny reports that suggested he has agreed a pre-contract with Serie A giants Juventus. The striker seems almost certain to spend the season with the Amsterdam giants, but it has been claimed that he has agreed a deal to move to Turin next summer.

However, the Sweden international, who has also been linked with Roma, claims no deal has been agreed and that his priority is to aid Ajax in the season ahead.

"I do not know anything about an option with Juventus," the Swede told Expressen. "My thoughts are mostly with Ajax." Opening the door to a move to Italy in the future, Ibrahimovic added: "But Italy would be interesting in the future."

Ibrahimovic's agent claims it would be folly to agree a pre-contract at this juncture. "Zlatan will not sign any pre-contract with Juventus," declared Mino Raiola. "Next summer, there might be five or six top European clubs who want him."

Roma "were offered Zlatan"

Football Italia

Ajax have laughed off reports linking Roma to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his agent claims the club rejected the chance to sign him. There were suggestions in the press this week that the Giallorossi were turning to Swedish international Ibrahimovic as an alternative to prime transfer target Alberto Gilardino.

"I am sorry for Roma," stated Ajax manager David Endt on Goalcity, "but Ibrahimovic is definitely staying here. There are no negotiations with the Giallorossi and we have never had official contact with the club. These stories are the usual transfer market tripe."

The reports maintained that Ibrahimovic had agreed to initial contract talks with the Capital club after agreeing a £5m fee. However, the comments from his agent depict a rather different scenario to that of the Ajax director.

"We did talk with their director of sport Franco Baldini," revealed Nino Raiola, "but he rather politely told us that Ibrahimovic was not a part of their plans. Baldini is only concentrating on capturing Gilardino, so it seems clear that all this talk of an agreement with Zlatan is pure fantasy. There is no negotiation to speak of."

This is an interesting development, as it suggests that Ibrahimovic is eager to make a Serie A move before his contract expires in 2006. This will interest Juventus, who are also said to be making a bid for the giant hitman who shone at Euro 2004.

Above all, it implies that Roma have a rather better chance of landing Gilardino than the press gives them credit for. Parma have consistently reassured fans that the Under-21 international is going nowhere and extended his contract until 2007, but his recent comments point out that his dream remains Roma.

"I signed a new deal because the conditions here suited me," Gilardino revealed last week, "but the transfer market is open until August 31 and anything can still happen."

PSV keen on Tevez

Planet Football

PSV Eindhoven have expressed an interest in bringing Argentine international Carlos Tevez to the Philips Stadion. Tevez has forged a huge reputation for his present club and has caught the eye of a host of admirers. Boca Juniors are aware he is likely to move on in the near future and are ready to sell if the price is right.

The Eindhoven club have been alerted to his talents and coach Guus Hiddink is set to monitor his progress during the Olympic Games. PSV president Harry van Raaij has confirmed Tevez is high on their transfer wish list but knows it could be difficult to secure his signature.

"This is a player we would be interested in," van Raaij told De Telegraaf. "But there is a question as to whether a deal is feasible. It must fall within our capabilities and at this stage the possibility is small."

Hiddink has made no secret of his need to bring in a new striker and Tevez's direct style clearly appeals, but Boca's €10 million asking price could put off PSV.

Deportivo La Coruna move for Wolfsburg's D'Allesandro

Tribal Football

Deportivo La Coruna have made a move for Wolfsburg midfielder Andres D'Allesandro. The Argentina international playmaker is also a target of Spartak Moscow after Wolfsburg chief Peter Pander confirmed that he could go if the right offer arrives.

Wolfsburg are asking £10 million for D'Allesandro and Depor president Augusto Caesar Lendoiro is expected to hold talks with the German club this week.

Lippi asks to see Azzurri spirit

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi has tried to instil a new team spirit into the Italy squad and insists the match with Iceland will not be friendly in nature.

"What I want to see from my players," said the debutant boss, "is the willingness to put themselves out for their teammates. I want enthusiasm, bonding and everyone working together for a single objective. We are setting down the first bricks for our 2006 World Cup campaign."

The Azzurri have been criticised in the past for taking friendly games too lightly, and there is the real risk of that with so many star names missing through injury or lack of form.

"This is not an experimental side," he insisted. "I prefer to say this is the Italy squad of the moment. We are giving some experience to good players and those who are here should look upon it as the first of many appearances rather than a one-off."

Luca Toni, Francesco Flachi and Manuele Blasi will make their Italy debuts, but all eyes will be on the Coach who enters the international scene after winning everything at Juventus.

"I expect a difficult debut, as Iceland are an enthusiastic side that are in better physical condition right now. But it's not right to consider these aspects and we must try to do well and get a good result, which is always important."

Lippi will sit on the bench vacated by Giovanni Trapattoni and he admits it is set to be a memorable moment for him.

"I am not particularly emotional right now," he insisted. "I'd prefer to call myself enthusiastic. Perhaps tomorrow, when I hear those first notes of the national anthem, I'll get a lump in my throat."

"I've heard it three times in football, twice with the Under-23 side and once with the League national squad, and I can tell you it always stirs the blood."

Olympics: Gentile pushes Pirlo

Football Italia

All that's needed tomorrow is a draw with Paraguay to reach the Olympic Quarters, but Claudio Gentile admits he expects more from Andrea Pirlo.

"Paraguay are a technically gifted side," explained the Under-21 Coach, "so it probably won't be a game played at a particularly high tempo."

The South Americans won their first game against Japan and only narrowly missed out to a late Ghana goal, but the Azzurrini know they cannot afford to play for a point.

"So far we have done the bare minimum required, but we expect more from certain players, above all Andrea Pirlo. He has been useful, but if he improves then he is the one who can give the team that step up to another level."

The Milan midfielder was the most eagerly awaited addition to the side that won the European Under-21 Championships in May, but has so far flattered to deceive. Another over-age player brought along for the Olympics, Roma defender Matteo Ferrari, is a doubt for tomorrow's Paraguay game due to an ankle problem.

His future club teammate Daniele De Rossi is grabbing the headlines after a sensational bicycle-kick goal in the 3-2 victory over Japan.

"Every now and then I try these tricks out," shrugged the confident Roma youth product, "especially in training. Sometimes they work like a dream, but if not you tend to look a bit of a fool. Now all we're thinking about is Paraguay and winning that game, because we want to qualify top of the group."

When the Under-21 side gets back to Italy, they face the qualifiers for the 2006 European Championships. The FIGC today confirmed that the match against Belarus on October 12 will be staged in Mantova.

Juventus line up Zlatan

Football Italia

Ajax star Zlatan Ibrahimovic seems set for a Juventus future according to numerous reports in Italy. The Swede has been linked with a switch to Turin for some time and a move seems certain for next summer.

The striker hasn't renewed his contract with the Dutch outfit which is set to expire in June 2006. That makes his sale almost a certainty in 12 months time and Juventus have reportedly grabbed an option. Whispers claim that the two clubs have agreed an £8.5m fee for the international player who did so well at Euro 2004.

Italian fans will remember Zlatan well after he scored a remarkable back-heeled goal in the 1-1 draw with Italy in the European Championships. Ibrahimovic, 22, was a contender to arrive at the Stadio Delle Alpi this season had David Trezeguet not extended his contract.

Nedved still out for Juve

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello admits that he doesn't know when star man Pavel Nedved will be available again. The midfielder has yet to appear for the club since damaging his knee in the Euro 2004 semi-final against Greece.

The Czech star has been left out of the squad for Tuesday's Messina friendly, while he remains a doubt for the Champions' League tie next week.

"Nedved still isn't well," revealed Capello. "He didn't train with the squad today and he isn't ready to play yet. Will he feature in Sweden next week against Djurgarden? It is too soon to say. We'll make a decision once he completes a full session with the rest of his teammates."

There is some better news concerning Olivier Kapo who himself has been struggling with injury recently. "The medical staff have told me that he can play against Messina," added the tactician. "The same applies for Lilian Thuram."

Capello also commented on Marcello Lippi's decision to drop Alex Del Piero from the Italian side that will face Iceland on Wednesday.

"I did speak to Lippi but I didn't ask him to leave out Alex," noted Capello. "That was a decision which the Coach made. I think the decision to leave him here with us will benefit Del Piero. He is working hard in order to find his best form."

The Old Lady haven't been too impressive so far but the tactician insists he isn't concerned.

"The only in-form sides are the foreign ones right now," he added. "We are improving all of the time. We give very little away but we've just been unfortunate that those few shots that we do concede seem to go in."

Meanwhile, Igor Tudor has joined up with the Croatia squad for this week's friendly against Israel. He follows the Azzurri contingent of Buffon, Zambrotta, Birindelli, Legrottaglie, Blasi and Miccoli, who are also on international duty.

Lippi explains Alex axe

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi has told Alex Del Piero to improve his form if he wants to be recalled to the Azzurri squad. The Juventus player has been omitted from the set-up for Wednesday's friendly in Iceland despite his good relationship with Lippi.

"Del Piero is a symbol of world football but at this moment in time he needs to improve his general condition," stated the new national boss. "When that happens then he will be considered for selection. I've spoken to the player and explained the situation.

"This is not a signal by me. Nobody should feel excluded but then again nobody is assured of a place in this squad."

The tactician then spoke specifically about the midweek tie in which he will make his debut on the Italian bench.

"Given the injuries and the Olympics, I've been given the chance to select other players," added Lippi. "I want everybody to treat the game as an important test because they could be recalled for the next game. This is simply the Italy that I have at the moment."

When asked how the Azzurri would play, Lippi suggested that his side would be quite offensive.

"A lot of different systems are used in Italy right now and I must get my team to play differently at times," he noted. "I think we will start with a 4-3-1-2 against Iceland but I want my team to be enthusiastic."

The former Napoli and Juve boss was then asked specifically about a number of individuals, starting with Inter 'keeper Francesco Toldo - who retired after Euro 2004. "I spoke to Toldo to understand his thinking," added the tactician. "The good news is that he is ready to play again if he is really needed."

Lippi, who admitted that he hadn't spoken to Paolo Maldini about a comeback, then commented on new boys Francesco Flachi (Sampdoria) and Manuele Blasi (Juventus).

"Flachi is a natural talent who has done well but can do even better," he explained. "As for Blasi, I will be expecting a lot as he can play in a number of positions."

So who could be called up in the future? "Roma's Daniele De Rossi is in our plans," he continued. "But there are around 250 players that I can choose from. I could select youngsters or even men who are 37 or 38."

Olympics: Fitness concerns Gentile

Football Italia

Claudio Gentile believes he knows why his U-21 side are struggling defensively at the Olympic Games. Although the Azzurrini have collected four points from two games, the side have conceded twice in each of their ties against Ghana and Japan.

"We really wanted to beat Japan and we did it which was the most important factor," boss Gentile stated after the 3-2 win. "However, if our physical condition was better then we wouldn't be having so many difficulties in defence.

"Unfortunately we are not in the shape that we were at the European Championships which means we must look to control things as best we can."

The Italian side now only need a draw against Paraguay on Wednesday in order to reach the quarter finals. Parma ace Alberto Gilardino was again the hero on Sunday evening as he scored twice against the Asian outfit.

"We did suffer a little after the break but we played really well in the first half," commented the striker. "We wanted the victory and therefore stayed united and determined until the very end. Now we are just concentrating on Paraguay."

The squad have now left their Volos base to fly to Athens, the venue for their next Olympic clash.

Juve jump for Saviola

Football Italia

Barcelona have confirmed they could loan out Javier Saviola - news that is of great interest to the Bianconeri - and loan Oscar Lopez to Lazio. The talented Argentine is no longer needed at the Nou Camp following the summer arrival of Ludovic Giuly, Deco, Henrik Larsson and Samuel Eto'o.

A 23-year-old creative midfielder who can support the strikers or play on either side of midfield, Saviola would provide the kind of spark that is so sorely lacking in the Juve line-up so far this season.

"While we will definitely not be buying any more players," Barcelona vice-President Sandro Rossell told a news agency, "there could be a few on their way out. It would nonetheless be a temporary deal that sees them return to the club in the future."

To have him at such a cut-price loan deal would make it a smart move for the Turin giants, although they already face competition from Didier Deschamps' Monaco.

Juventus take first option on Ajax's Ibrahimovic

Tribal Football

Juventus have won first refusal for Ajax striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic - with a transfer fee already agreed. Its reported that Juve will sign Ibrahimovic for the start of next season after the Swede turned down a new contract offer from Ajax this summer.

Ibrahimovic's current deal expires in 2006 and Juve have struck a deal with Ajax which will see the centre-forward move to Turin next summer for £8 million. Juve coach Fabio Capello has been a long-time admirer of Ibrahimovic and tried to sign him while at AS Roma.

Juventus locked in swap talks with Inter Milan

Tribal Football

Juventus and Inter Milan continued talks yesterday over a major player-swap deal. Inter are willing to allow midfielder Cristiano Zanetti move to Juve, but negotiations have dragged on over the player to come in the opposite direction.

Inter have demanded Mauro Camoranesi, but Juve are insisting a cash component be included if the Argie-born Italian international is to leave. Juve have also asked about a potential four-player swap, which would see Camoranesi and goalkeeper Fabian Carini move to Inter in exchange for Zanetti and defender Fabio Cannavaro.

Juventus chief in London for Spurs talks over Tudor

Tribal Football

Juventus chief Roberto Bettega will be in London today for talks with Tottenham over defender Igor Tudor. The Croatia international is expected to move to White Hart Lane this week after the two clubs reached an agreement over a transfer fee.

Bettega hopes to finalise discussions with Spurs today over deal worth around £3.5 million.

Juventus to offer Appiah in deal for Arsenal's Campbell

Tribal Football

Juventus chief Roberto Bettega will hold talks with Arsenal today over a deal for defender Sol Campbell. After the way his team shipped two goals against Djurgardens last week, Juve coach Fabio Capello is demanding the board find him an experienced centre-half before the summer window closes.

Campbell is now well inside the final year of his contract and its reported that he won't be able to consider signing a new deal until next year due to an agents dispute. Bettega is ready to offer Arsenal a cash-plus-player swap involving Ghana international midfielder Stephen Appiah in exchange for Campbell.

Roma's Panucci in Turin for Juventus talks

Tribal Football

AS Roma defender Christian Panucci was in Turin yesterday for talks with Juventus. The Italian international is set to follow coach Fabio Capello to Juve, just as he did at Real Madrid and AC Milan.

Juve officials want to delay the deal until the European deadline on August 25, with director general Luciano Moggi only regarding Panucci as a stop-gap in the event he fails to bring in an international class defender.

Agent aware of Juventus interest for Inter Milan's Cruz

Tribal Football

The agent of Inter Milan striker Julio Cruz has acknowledged the interest of Juventus and AS Roma - but insists he has not received any official approach. Gustavo Ghezzi said: "We do not know anything, Inter have not ever told us anything and nobody has ever telephoned.

"We were told a month ago by the Nerazzurra club that Julio was required this season. Julio does not want to move from Milan. All we know, is what we read in the newspapers."

Ghezzi, however, added: "But it is clear that Julio costs a lot and that Lazio has asked for him in the exchange with Cesar. Its no surprise that (Juventus coach Fabio) Capello is interested. He's followed Julio for a long time."

Italy 3 - 2 Japan

Football Italia

Alberto Gilardino took his Olympic tally to three goals as Italy just scraped past Japan 3-2, but it puts them in good stead to reach the Quarters.

The Azzurrini are now level at the top of Group B with Ghana, who beat Paraguay 2-1 tonight, so a draw in their last game with the South Americans will see them through to the knockout round.

Italy need a victory after their opening 2-2 draw with Ghana and, despite Coach Claudio Gentile's suggestions to the contrary, there were no changes from the eleven that started that match.

The last time these two sides met in the Olympics was 1936 and an 8-0 victory sent Vittorio Pozzo's Italy squad on its way to its last gold medal. Japan had a middling start to this tournament, narrowly losing 4-3 to Group B leaders Paraguay.

The Azzurrini were not about to throw away the first half as they had against the Africans and were aggressive from the start. It paid off, as within three minutes Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi had broken the deadlock in spectacular fashion. He met Giuseppe Sculli's cross with an acrobatic left-foot bicycle-kick into the top corner.

Soon after, Alberto Gilardino bagged his second goal of the tournament to put Italy in a commanding lead. Matteo Ferrari's long ball forward was trapped by the Parma striker, who skipped round Moniwa and drilled the ball past the goalkeeper.

Ivan Pelizzoli's first save came after 17 minutes, when he held Shinji Ono's deflected effort, but Gilardino remained dangerous and whistled his shot just wide of the upright.

Japan regrouped after their initial setback and got back into the game with a splendid free kick curled in from 25 metres by Abe, leaving Pelizzoli stranded.

Matsui's cross caused problems in the Azzurrini defence, but there was nothing Japan could do on Italy's third goal. Emiliano Moretti's cross found the powerful header from Gilardino to restore their two-goal cushion.

The Oriental outfit refused to give in and Pelizzoli was forced into a fine save on Okubo's header from the lively Matsui's cross, then parried Ono's free kick. After the break Daniele Bonera needed a timely intervention to stop Matsui taking full advantage of an error in the offside trap.

Claudio Gentile needed fresh legs and introduced Simone Del Neroand Marco Donadel for Giuseppe Sculli and Angelo Palombo.

The second half was decidedly in Japan's favour as they poured forward in search of a goal that would light their hopes of a comeback, but Pelizzoli was again secure on substitute Tanaka's effort and a Takamatsu turn.

It became almost inevitable that they would break through sooner or later, and in the final minute of regular time Takamatsu rose at the back post to nod in Abe's free kick.

However, it was not enough to prevent their second consecutive defeat and Italy's first victory. Gentile's men rise to four points in Group B and are in with a good chance of reaching the Quarter-Finals.

Liverpool rejected as Real Madrid go for AC Milan's Coloccini

Tribal Football

Real Madrid were locked in talks with AC Milan over the weekend for Argie defender Fabricio Coloccini. Milan are ready to sell Coloccini and have also fielded an approach from Liverpool for the 22 year-old. After talks over a co-ownership deal was rejected by Milan on Saturday, negotiations focused on an outright deal for Coloccini.

Real Madrid have offered £2.75 million, while Milan are demanding £3.5 million. Liverpool dropped out of the equation after Milan rejected a co-ownership proposal.

Talks between Real and Milan will continue today. Real coach Jose Antonio Camacho wants to play Coloccini alongside Walter Samuel in defence this season, though the youngster can also act as a holding midfielder.

Juve revive Campbell bid

Football Italia

Juventus know they need reinforcements in defence and are offering Stephen Appiah as part of a swap deal for Sol Campbell. The disappointing 2-2 home draw with Djurgarden highlighted already existing problems in the Bianconeri back line and the club is determined to make changes if they qualify for the Champions' League.

They had already been linked with Campbell earlier on this summer, but nothing had come of their negotiations with Arsenal. Juventus now realise the situation is worse than expected and are willing to make a sacrifice in order to tempt the England international to Serie A.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger would reportedly be happy to take Ghana midfielder Appiah to Highbury, plus a cash sum, in order to part with the 29-year-old centre-back. 23-year-old former Brescia star Appiah's price-tag rose slightly after he scored a spectacular goal against Italy in the Athens Olympics this week.

Juve director Roberto Bettega is expected in London on Monday to discuss Igor Tudor's move to Tottenham and will stop off at their north London neighbours for further talks about Campbell.

Juve-Inter swap deals mooted

Football Italia

There are new reports that Juventus and Inter could engage in a swap deal, with Mauro German Camoranesi joining the Nerazzurri in exchange for Fabio Capello's favourite midfielder Cristiano Zanetti. The Italian had already been under his orders at Roma.

Above all, this move would convince Inter to release their grip on Cesar, pushing Lazio's Brazilian winger towards the Stadio Delle Alpi instead.

Juve's bid for Sol Campbell seems to have hit a dead end with Arsenal's claims he is ready to extend his contract, so the Bianconeri are turning their attention to another of Capello's favourites - Roma fullback Christian Panucci.

Kuffour not going to Juve

Planet Football

Samuel Kuffour's agent Oscar Damiani has ruled his client out of making a move from Bayern Munich to Italian giants Juventus.

Following the Italian giants' 2-2 draw against Swedish club Djurgardens in the UEFA Champions League, their defence has been criticised. The likes of Daniele Bonera and Fabio Cannavaro have been linked with a move to Fabio Capello's side, along with Kuffour.

However, Damiani has stated Serie A was once interested in the Ghana international, but that the stopper will not don the Juve shirt this term.

"Kuffour is a player that Fabio Capello would have liked to have at Roma about two seasons ago," explained Damiani to Guerin Sportivo. "But now, there is no chance he could wear Juve's jersey."

Cruz bidding war begins

Football Italia

The agent of Julio Ricardo Cruz admits that Roma and Juve are battling for his signature, but has bad news for Lazio."As far as I know," stated Gustavo Ghezzi, "Roma and Juventus are tracking my player this summer. We're well aware that Fabio Capello has been a fan of his for many years."

This suggests that the Bianconeri are leading the race, although both clubs are in dire need of a new centre-forward before the transfer market closes on August 31. The former Bologna striker is also a major target for Lazio, but his agent suggests there are only two possible destinations.

"I heard that Lazio had requested Cruz as part of Inter's deal for Cesar, but a player like this costs money and I frankly doubt they have the resources to pay his wages."

It is looking increasingly unlikely that the Argentine will stay at the San Siro, as he was left on the bench for Inter's Champions' League clash with Basel. As both Roma and Juventus are set to play in Europe this season, to cup-tie the player would massively devalue him on the market.

"Inter have never told us anything about his future," added agent Ghezzi, "and therefore what they said a month ago - that Cruz won't leave the Nerazzurri - remains valid in our eyes."

Blasi joy at Azzurri call

Football Italia

Francesco Flachi and Manuele Blasi were exhilarated and surprised at being included in Marcello Lippi's first Italy squad. New boy Blasi will have a particularly unforgettable experience if he plays in this friendly game, as he will turn 24 years of age on Tuesday.

"This is just the icing on the cake of a fantastic summer for me," said the former Parma midfielder. "First I joined Juventus, then the Nazionale. I cannot ask for more."

Saturday 14 August

Juve held by Livorno

Football Italia

Milan and Juventus failed to get the better of Serie A competitors Sampdoria and Livorno in last night's friendly action. Juventus were in action on Friday night, but only managed a 1-1 draw with Serie A new boys Livorno.

The Bianconeri fielded what was practically a first-team line-up and were unlucky early on when Alessandro Del Piero's lob clipped the crossbar and Ruben Olivera's bicycle-kick was well saved.

Jonathan Zebina broke the deadlock with a rare goal just before the break, skipping past two defenders and placing a low drive to the left of the goalkeeper.

However, Livorno made several changes at half-time and introduced their best players, eventually grabbing the equaliser when Danilevicius sprung the offside trap.

"It was a good performance," insisted Fabio Capello, "especially in the first half when we had three goal scoring opportunities. We had a few more problems after the break."

Inter Milan to offer Zanetti for Juventus keeper Carini

Tribal Football

Inter Milan midfielder Cristiano Zanetti has been linked with Juventus. Its been suggested the arrivals of Juan Veron and Edgar Davids has forced Zanetti to consider his future at the San Siro. A swap move is being mooted, which would see Juve keeper Fabian Carini move to Inter in part-exchange for Italian international Zanetti.

Real Madrid move for AC Milan's Coloccini

Tribal Football

Real Madrid held an opening round of talks with AC Milan yesterday afternoon for defender Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentina international is now a priority target for Real after pulling out of talks with Arsenal for midfielder Patrick Vieira this week.

Real coach Jose Antonio Camacho had been banking on Vieira's defensive ability to add steel to his line-up this season, but now has turned to out-and-out defender Coloccini. Camacho sees the youngster forming a central defensive pairing with countryman Walter Samuel this season.

Real hope to snap up Coloccini for around £3million.

Lippi reveals Italy ideal

Football Italia

Marcello Lippi will name his squad for the Iceland friendly later today, but first outlined the tactical changes he'll make to the Azzurri.

"I want a group that can mutate and be versatile, based around two or three different tactical systems that are currently used in Serie A," explained the new man in charge. "That way I will be able to adjust the shape of the side to best suit our opponents."

Lippi takes over the reins following the unsuccessful era of Giovanni Trapattoni, in which the veteran Coach suffered humiliating early exits at the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2004.

"Inter and Juventus both use the 4-4-2, while Roma are adopting the Spanish style 4-2-3-1 and Milan have a more solid 4-3-1-2. These are the points of reference, to be moved around when needed."

The former Juventus boss' first challenge is a friendly against Iceland on Wednesday, but in early September the first 2006 qualifiers kick off.

"We are heading towards the 2006 World Cup with the conviction that we will win, because Italy as a sporting nation with great history must aim for the very top."

Lippi has won everything possible with the Bianconeri, but Trapattoni's experience shows that club football is very different from the international scene.

"I am preparing for a different type of work from the usual club Coaching," he conceded. "Here you only get to train players for three days at a time. The problem is picking the players who will give you the best guarantees of talent and form for each individual game."

Lippi calls three new faces

Football Italia

There are three new faces in Marcello Lippi's first Italy squad - Manuele Blasi, Luca Toni and Francesco Flachi - but Alex Del Piero is dropped.

There were already clues that Palermo hitman Toni (pictured) would be given his first call-up for Wednesday's friendly against Iceland, as Christian Vieri is out injured. Flachi also pushes his way into the squad following an impressive campaign with Sampdoria, while Blasi is reaping the rewards for his summer switch to Juventus.

Many of the top Azzurri stars are out of action, including Antonio Cassano, Francesco Totti, Vieri, Mauro Camoranesi, Massimo Ambrosini, Cristiano Zanetti, Bernardo Corradi, Pippo Inzaghi and Fabio Cannavaro.

However, Lippi assured this week that Del Piero is most definitely part of his plans for this new era of the Italian national squad.

"Alex is an important player," noted the former Juve boss. "A very important player, for his history with the Azzurri, the team in which he plays, the results he has earned and how he deals with public opinion. I am certain he will find his form again."

This is the squad that will travel to Iceland for Wednesday's game:

Gk: Abbiati (Milan), Buffon (Juventus). D: Birindelli (Juventus), Diana (Sampdoria), Favalli (Inter), Legrottaglie (Juventus), Materazzi (Inter), Nesta (Milan), Oddo (Lazio), Zambrotta (Juventus). M: Barone (Palermo), Blasi (Juventus), Fiore (Valencia), Gattuso (Milan), Perrotta (Roma), Volpi (Sampdoria). F: Bazzani (Sampdoria), Di Vaio (Valencia), Flachi (Sampdoria), Miccoli (Juventus), Toni (Palermo)
