Zambrotta backs Alex

Football Italia

Italy's Gianluca Zambrotta has defended teammate Alessandro Del Piero from mass criticism. The latter wasn't particularly impressive against Denmark on Monday but Zambrotta has backed his Juventus colleague.

"He is playing in a position which isn't his and he's not moaning about it," said the left-back. "Alessandro is a second striker so he is having to run a lot more here on the left flank in order to be of use to the team.

"When you consider how much he has given to Juventus and Italy in the past, I think it is rather stupid to criticise him."

There were reports that Del Piero would have been replaced by Marco Di Vaio for the Sweden tie but that now looks unlikely. Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni is set to shelve that experiment with Francesco Totti likely to miss the game through suspension.

Meanwhile, Zambrotta also commented on the developments at his club with David Trezeguet set to stay. "I already said that I thought he would," noted the left-back. "He is an important player for us now and will be in the future."

Zambrotta said little about the arrival of Fabio Capello as boss and the likely signing of Emerson. "Capello? I've not spoken to him yet and I don't know anything about Emerson," he concluded.

Three-match ban for Totti

Football Italia

Francesco Totti has been banned for three games after UEFA found him guilty of gross unsporting conduct. The Italian was handed the suspension for spitting in the face of Denmark's Christian Poulsen during Monday's 0-0 draw.

Totti himself went in front of the disciplinary commission this morning where he attempted to defend his actions.

"I regret this whole situation and I'm here to make a public apology," Totti told the UEFA officials according to Italian FA lawyer Mario Gallavotti. "I don't recognise myself from the video images. I want you to know that the real Francesco Totti is someone else."

It is believed that UEFA were planning to give the No 10 a four-match ban for the disgraceful incident. However, they have instead opted for three. The Italian FA may decide to appeal against the decision in a bid to get it reduced.

As it stands, Totti will miss the games against Sweden, Bulgaria and the quarter final if Italy get there.

Totti right to be banned

Football Italia

The decision to ban Francesco Totti for three games has been welcomed by Paolo Rossi and Dino Zoff. The Italian was handed the suspension this morning after he was caught on camera spitting in Christian Poulsen's face during the Denmark game.

"There are no excuses for what he did," stated the legendary Rossi. "He deserves what he got. Spitting on an opponent is the worst thing that anybody can do on a football field."

Rossi's 1982 World Cup teammate Zoff agreed. "It was horrible and he's been punished," he stated. "Everyone knows how good Totti is as a player but now Giovanni Trapattoni will be without him.

"Even if I'm sure that Trap will be able to cope with his absence. After all, he still has players like Pirlo, Del Piero and Fiore who can deliver."

Danish boss Morten Olsen, whose federation made the official complaint, was also pleased to see the player sentenced. "He is a star of world football but players of his standard shouldn't act like that," he stated. "It was embarrassing."

Totti has now been ruled out of the games against Sweden, Bulgaria and the quarter final if Italy get there.

"He is a great player but spitting in the face of another is not on," noted Sweden's Fredrik Ljungberg. "I remember that Patrick Vieira did a similar thing in England and he was given a six-match stop."

Bulgaria boss Plamen Markov commented: "I'm saddened that he won't be playing against us. It will be a loss to football because the great players are what makes this sport great. However, Italy have the men to replace him."

Totti went in front of UEFA's disciplinary commission this morning but they were unable to be lenient.

"The body considered the player's admission of guilt, the particular circumstances of the tournament as well as the gravity of the offence," said William Gaillard, UEFA's director of communications and public affairs.

"This decision sends out a message that we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour."

Trap opts for Pirlo

Football Italia

Andrea Pirlo is set to start for Italy against Sweden on Friday following the suspension of Francesco Totti.

Indications from today's training session suggested that the Azzurri will shelve their 4-2-3-1 formation in favour of a 4-3-1-2. The defence should remain unchanged with Buffon in goal, guarded by Panucci, Nesta, Cannavaro and Zambrotta.

Milan's Pirlo may be used as a deep playmaker, flanked by Cristiano Zanetti on the left and Gennaro Gattuso on the right. Antonio Cassano, who replaces Totti, will play behind Christian Vieri and Alex Del Piero - the latter being used as a second striker rather than a left winger.

The Azzurri really need to win tomorrow night after only drawing 0-0 with Denmark in their first match. Sweden beat Bulgaria 5-0.

Juve begin Emerson talks

Football Italia

Juventus have opened official negotiations with Roma for Emerson, while Philippe Mexes is at the centre of a contract battle. It was reported that Bianconeri transfer guru Luciano Moggi met with Roma's Director of Sport Franco Baldini late last night to discuss Emerson's future.

The Brazilian has long been in agreement with the Turin side, but his current club had threatened to leave him on the bench rather than sell him to their arch rivals. However, after he rejected a £12m move to Real Madrid and began legal proceedings to sue Roma for unpaid wages, it seems as if Baldini has caved in.

The Giallorossi have other matters on their mind, as several news services also revealed that they had signed a contract with Philippe Mexes and registered it with the Italian FA. The defender is still tied to Auxerre for another two seasons, but he is locked in a legal battle with the French side over his buy-out clause.

According to Mexes he can walk away for as little as £3.5m, but Auxerre have made it clear they won't release him for less than £5m. The player has now sent an official letter warning the side he won't turn up for pre-season training.

FIFA are set to convene a tribunal of arbitration in order to rule on this on-going disagreement, so Roma are forced to wait until that verdict is delivered.

Carvalho catches Juve eye

Football Italia

Porto's Ricardo Carvalho is the latest defender to be associated with a move to Italian giants Juventus. The Bianconeri are looking to rejuvenate their ageing defence and the Portuguese international is of interest.

It was believed that Inter were in pole position to sign the Euro 2004 star but they seem unwilling to pay his £8m transfer fee. That has opened the door for the Old Lady with some reports suggesting that contact has already been made.

Transfer guru Luciano Moggi is believed to have met Jorge Mendes, the player's agent, to discuss the move. Juve are ready to offer cash but also the services of Croatian international defender Igor Tudor in exchange.

Meanwhile, negotiations are continuing with Messina regarding their attacking left-back Alessandro Parisi. The defender has had a sensational campaign with the club and was a key figure in their promotion.

Juve are hoping that the Sicilians will hand him over in return for Uruguayan striker Marcelo Zalayeta.

Juve to keep Davids?

Football Italia

Edgar Davids could be on the verge of a sensational return to Juventus, according to reports in Italy. The Dutchman is wanted by a host of clubs across Europe after his contract with the Delle Alpi outfit expired.

The player, who has spent the last six months on loan at Barcelona, has been at odds with Juve for some months after no agreement could be reached over a new deal. However, the two parties may be set to make peace thanks to the arrival of Fabio Capello in Turin.

The former Roma Coach is a massive fan of the 31-year-old who he did work with at Milan in 1997.

Now reports claim that the tactician met Davids in Holland's Euro 2004 hotel prior to their game against Germany. That has fuelled speculation that the ex-Ajax man could make a shock decision by returning to the Delle Alpi.

However, there are some parts of the media who believe that Davids will complete a free transfer to Inter instead. The San Siro side are ready to offer the midfielder a three-year deal worth £2.5m a season.

Juventus wait as Roma in more Emerson talks

Tribal Football

Talks continue to rumble on between Emerson and AS Roma over the Brazilian's future.

Real Madrid have had an offer for the midfielder accepted by Roma, but Emerson is reluctant to go to Spain and instead is desperate to follow his ex-coach Fabio Capello to Juventus.

Roma president Franco Sensi is on record saying no player would be sold to Juve while he's in charge. But Capello is pressing his director general at Juve, Luciano Moggi, to make the deal happen.

The deciding factor could be Juve midfielder Enzo Maresca, who is admired by Roma coach Cesare Prandelli. If Moggi includes Maresca in Juve's bid for Emerson, then the deal could go through.

In the meantime, Roma director general Franco Baldini has held talks with Emerson's agent in an attempt to mend the club's relationship with the player, which has become fractured since the Brazilian refused Real Madrid's offer.

Messina want Juventus to sign Jimenez

Tribal Football

Messina are in talks with Juventus over the potential signing of Chilean midfielder Luis Jimenez. Ternana starlet Jimenez is a major target for Juve and Messina hope to see the Turin giants land the youngster then loan him to them for the new season. Jimenez was also tracked closely by Manchester United and Barcelona last season.

Inter assess Vieri bids

Football Italia

Inter have confirmed that they are still considering whether or not to keep Christian Vieri at the club. It was believed that the striker was set to stay after the arrival of Roberto Mancini as boss and following Juve's decision to keep David Trezeguet.

But President Giacinto Facchetti says that Juventus and Real Madrid want to swoop for the 31-year-old.

"There are two clubs interested in Vieri," Facchetti is quoted as saying. "One is Juve and the other is Real Madrid. We will now evaluate any eventual offers even if we will have to speak to the player and Mancini first.

"Only after that will we decide what is the best decision to make for the good of Inter."

Juventus were very keen on Vieri but their interest seems to have cooled after the latest developments in the David Trezeguet saga. He was being heavily associated with a move to Barcelona but he now seems set to extend his contract which runs out in 2005.

Real have been linked with a £12m bid, or a cash plus Fernando Morientes swap deal. Meanwhile, the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona could join the chase seeing as Inter have confirmed that they are willing to listen to offers.

Vieri supporting Trap

Football Italia

Italian striker Christian Vieri maintains that the Azzurri squad have faith in boss Giovanni Trapattoni.

"There is no revolt against the Coach and no arguments between the players," said the forward. "All these stories are false. The journalists who write these things should really be sent home."

Some reports have claimed that all is not well within the 'Casa Azzurri' after their unimpressive start to Euro 2004. Vieri confirmed that discussions were taking place between the players and the Coach but that was nothing out of the ordinary.

"We do talk but that is normal," he added. "Trapattoni always has the last word and he hasn't lost his grip on the squad."

Vieri will again lead the Italy attack on Friday when they take on Sweden - a game that may be played without Francesco Totti who is facing a possible three-match ban for spitting.

The 31-year-old was then inevitably asked for his thoughts on Inter's decision to hire Roberto Mancini. "I'm delighted for Mancini and myself," said the Nerazzurri man. "Mancio is a friend and a great Coach.

"This is a great chance for him. Alberto Zaccheroni? I did have problems with him but I don't anymore."

But will Vieri still be at the club as Inter have confirmed they are evaluating offers for his services? "They can consider them and then I will," he replied. "It is pleasing to hear that Real Madrid are interested but I'm just focused on Euro 2004 now."

Signori out - Sculli in?

Football Italia

Bologna want Under-21 striker Giuseppe Sculli to replace Giuseppe Signori at the club next season. The veteran has quit Italian football now and the Rossoblu are desperately looking for a new forward.

Sculli is available after the Juventus owned player had an unhappy stint on loan at Chievo last term. He was heavily linked with a switch to Udinese but he's caught the attention of more clubs after impressing at the recent U-21 European Championships.

Bologna are also keen on having another member of that successful team in their line-up for the new campaign. Left-back Emiliano Moretti was immense for the Azzurrini and the Rossoblu want to keep him after spending last season on loan at the club.

The former Fiorentina and Juventus stopper is owned by Parma and talks have already begun. Meanwhile, Under-21 defender Cristian Zaccardo is today being associated with a move from Bologna to Palermo.

Italy prepare life without Totti

Football Italia

Francesco Totti faces a UEFA tribunal tomorrow, but Giovanni Trapattoni is already testing ways to survive without him.

"Totti certainly isn't happy to be in this situation," noted FIGC Vice-President Innocenzo Mazzini, "but he is nonetheless relaxed. We have great respect for UEFA and will abide by any decision they make while doing everything we can to represent our player."

The Roma captain has disgusted the continent as television footage emerged of him spitting at Danish player Christian Poulsen. The images clearly show he was looking at the opponent and too close for the gesture to have been an accident.

"He was quite surprised and claimed he had no memory of the incident," insisted Mazzini. "In any case, there are many great players in this squad and nobody is irreplaceable."

This last statement is an important one, as it shows that Italy are prepared for the likely two to three match ban for their most representative player. He will give his testimony in front of a UEFA tribunal tomorrow morning at 10am.

There are even suggestions that the Azzurri should send Totti home if UEFA inflict a heavy punishment, but Mazzini refused to reveal any contingency plans. "You can't make a scenario without facts at hand."

UEFA will make their decision on Thursday, but they could come down hard on Totti after Poulsen's testimony. "Totti spat at me several times throughout the match," said the Dane in an official statement released by his FA.

Now Giovanni Trapattoni is forced to find a new set-up that can survive without his star player and there were already experiments on Wednesday afternoon.

The Coach fielded Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso, Cristiano Zanetti in midfield, with Alessandro Del Piero supporting front two Christian Vieri and Antonio Cassano. Vieri limped off with a knee problem, but the medical staff hinted that it was nothing to be concerned about.

Trap had always maintained that the balance of the side could not sustain both these creative players, but with the Roma man out of the picture it might be Pirlo's big chance.

"Andrea is a great player," Trapattoni had claimed, "but the Italy squad is build along certain structures and with him there the tactical set-up would have to change. I can't just abandon everything we've done and adopt a new system from one day to the next."

Totti's thuggish behaviour could well have forced Trapattoni's hand and opened the door for the Scudetto winning midfielder.

Spit ban for Totti?

Football Italia

Italy's Francesco Totti may be suspended by UEFA after he allegedly spat in the face of a Denmark player.

A Danish website had today published stills of the incident which were taken from television footage. The Roma player appears to spit in the face of Christian Poulsen, an incident which neither the referee or his assistants saw.

Some reports claim that UEFA are now in possession of the video tape and are preparing to review it. If they decide to take action then Totti could be handed a lengthy ban - one which could see him miss all or most of the Euro 2004 tournament.

UEFA have handed out heavy punishments in the past as Lazio defender Sinisa Mihajlovic is well aware of. He was given an eight-match ban by UEFA after he spat in the face of Adrian Mutu during a Champions' League clash against Chelsea.

Totti was expected to be the Azzurri's main man this summer but his tournament hasn't started well. He was very disappointing in the 0-0 draw with Denmark, even claiming that his boots and socks were a contributing factor to his display

Buffon: Sweden fear us

Football Italia

Italy's Gigi Buffon is optimistic ahead of the Sweden game even though the Scandinavians won their first match 5-0. The Swedes did impress in their tie against Bulgaria but the goalkeeper is unsure of their real strength.

"It is hard to say whether Sweden were good or Bulgaria were bad," stated the Juventus No 1. "I think Sweden will be more worried than us going into the game."

Having drawn their first match with Denmark 0-0, Buffon knows that his side must really collect a victory.

"Our glass is only half full right now," he continued. "We must continue to not concede but we must start to score. It was very hot against Denmark but that is no excuse. We did have our difficulties but now we know what to expect from this tournament."

Milan stopper Alessandro Nesta is also hopeful that his side can collect the three points on Friday evening. "Sweden's win obviously complicates matters for us but we have time to recover," stated the defender.

There have been calls for Trap to dump his 4-2-3-1 tactics and adopt Milan's style of play with the introduction of Andrea Pirlo. "The Milan system is one, while the Azzurri's is another," he added. "I just hope that this tournament lasts for as long as possible."

Gattuso backs Trap

Football Italia

Gennaro Gattuso has defended boss Giovanni Trapattoni after Italy's sluggish 0-0 draw with Denmark.

"It is not Trapattoni's fault because the players are 70-80 per cent responsible for what happens on the pitch," said the Milan man. "We are the ones who are actually playing out there. It is us, with indications from the Coach, who must and can improve."

The Azzurri were very disappointing in their opening Euro 2004 game which led to showdown talks yesterday.

"The tactical meeting lasted for just five minutes," revealed the midfielder. "We sorted things out, something that didn't happen at the World Cup.

"We were surprised by the way Denmark played and we ran a lot but very badly. Now we must make changes. We have the experience in the squad to do this. Especially as it would be embarrassing to be knocked out in the group stages."

Gattuso was used as a substitute during Monday's game but he is tipped to start against Sweden on Friday.

Juve assess Vicente option

Football Italia

Juventus are one of a number of clubs chasing Valencia winger Vicente Rodriguez, according to his agent. The Spaniard impressed in the 1-0 win over Russia at Euro 2004 and the Turin giants have made contact.

"Valencia want to keep him but he must be aware of the fact that a number of Italian clubs, including Juventus are keen," stated Miguel Angel Cermeno. "Vicente feels like a 'Valencianista' but there are also a few English sides that have been in touch too."

The Spanish champions want to keep the 23-year-old at the club until 2011 but their contract offer is reportedly not to the player's satisfaction.

Vicente is the second Spanish winger that has been associated with the Old Lady after they were linked with Joaquin yesterday. The Betis Seville player is liked by boss Fabio Capello and the youngster seems keen on a Delle Alpi switch.

"It is obviously pleasing to know that a Coach like Capello rates you," said the international. "It would be a great experience to go and play in Italy, especially as it has become more offensive in recent seasons.

"Juve play with four midfielders and I would settle in well. Roma were after me some years ago but nothing came of it."

Joaquin: I'd love Juventus move

Tribal Football

Real Betis winger Joaquin has declared he'd welcome a move to Juventus. The Spanish international has been put on the market at a starting price of £17 million.

"When a coach like Capello says that you have quality, you cannot be unhappy about that," said Joaquin. "A transfer to Italy? It would be a beautiful experience, in the last years your game has become more offensive than in the past.

"Juve plays with four midfielders, I would fit in well."

Inter president: Real Madrid, Juventus offers for Vieri

Tribal Football

Inter Milan president Giacinto Facchetti has revealed two offers have arrived for striker Christian Vieri.

"In this period we have received two offers, from Juventus and Real Madrid," he confirmed. "We'll now talk with him and the new coach then decide what's best. We will evaluate every offer we receive and together with the coach we'll decide what to do."

Juventus rival Middlesborough for Viduka

Tribal Football

While there have been claims from many agents declaring they're representing Viduka, the final word will be left with Melbourne-based lawyer Rudi Horvat.

Tribalfootball.com understands that while Middlesbrough are in the frame to land Viduka, Horvat is prepared to listen to offers from the continent.

Juventus coach Fabio Capello has been made aware of Viduka's situation during a series of talks last week on the subject of Christian Vieri's future at Inter Milan.

With Inter now appointing Roberto Mancini as new coach, Vieri is expected to stay at the San Siro rather than return to Juve.

Tribalfootball.com has been told the Turin giants will now try for Viduka, who can be signed for a fraction of Vieri's transfer fee and also his personal demands are modest compared to the Sydney-born Italian international.

Rivals battle for Bonera

Football Italia

Juventus and Roma are again set to clash on the transfer market for Under-21 ace Daniele Bonera. The Parma defender will be sold this summer with Turin and Rome his most likely destinations.

"I've not asked to leave the club yet I should know more by the end of this month," he told Radio Radio. "But it is obvious that I would like to play in the Champions' League."

The Bianconeri have been after the former Brescia ace for months and he had expressed an interest in joining them. However, Bonera could be tempted to opt for the capital outfit instead after they hired former Parma boss Cesare Prandelli.

"The fact that he is there makes a difference in the way I see Roma as I already know how he works," added the 23-year-old.

Juventus rival Barcelona for Davids

Tribal Football

Juventus are Barcelona's main rivals for midfielder Edgar Davids. The Dutchman has verbally agreed a three-year deal with Barca, but won't put pen to paper until after Euro2004.

Inter Milan president Giacinto Facchetti admitted last night that the club's finances wouldn't stretch to accommodate Davids' personal demands, so leaving the way clear for Juve to try to bring the midfielder back to Turin.

Juve coach Fabio Capello wants Davids back and while no serious approach has been made by the Bianconeri, a deal is expected to be tabled to Davids' agent.

Roma must up Mexes bid

Football Italia

Auxerre have told Roma to increase their offer for Philippe Mexes if they want to sign the defender. The Giallorossi have agreed a deal with the player but no fee has been settled between the two clubs.

"We met with Roma's sporting director Franco Baldini but we couldn't agree," Auxerre Coach Guy Roux told France Football. "The Italian offer of £5m is too weak. Roma want Philippe but they have to give us an acceptable price.

"Our first desire is to let the player go where he wants. However, we must not be damaged as Mexes still has two years left on his contract with us."

The capital club have targeted Mexes to replace Walter Samuel after he joined Real Madrid for £15m. Auxerre want around £10m for the stopper, a figure that Manchester United were prepared to pay for the 22-year-old.

"Man Utd offered us that but the player's agent refused the move," continued Roux. "It seems he was afraid Philippe would not play there. We were close to finding an agreement with the Premiership side."

Trap: Expect changes

Football Italia

Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni will make changes to the side for the Sweden game but the 4-2-3-1 system remains. There were suggestions that Trap would employ a 4-4-2 after the disappointing draw with Denmark but that is not the case.

"I won't modify anything tactically," said the tactician. "We'll start with a 4-2-3-1 and from the second half against the Danes. I'll make one or two changes to the side. Who? I can't say at the moment as I'll have to see what happens over the next couple of days."

Many expect Cristiano Zanetti and Mauro Camoranesi to lose their places to Gennaro Gattuso and Stefano Fiore. Even if there is also the possibility that Alex Del Piero could be dropped in favour of Antonio Cassano.

Many believe that Milan's Andrea Pirlo should have been used against Denmark but Trap disagrees.

"A player with his characteristics wouldn't have changed anything," explained Trap. "I was hoping that substitutes Cassano and Fiore would give us something extra in attack.

"Will Pirlo play against Sweden? This team has started down one particular path. Andrea is a great player but things would change tactically with him in the team."

Italy were poor yesterday and the Coach believes there are a number of reasons why the Azzurri struggled. "There was an intense heat, some of my players were tired and we seemed too anxious to score," he noted.

A number of the side's most recognisable players also failed to impress, starting with Francesco Totti. "We expected more from him but he was tightly marked. Nevertheless he was a free-kick danger and provided a few assists. He'll improve."

Del Piero and Camoranesi also failed to shine. "I can't tell you now whether they will play on Friday," added Trap. "I'll need to talk to them and see how things go. But I have to say that I wasn't that unhappy with how Alex played."

Despite the sluggish start, Trap is remaining confident. "I know my squad well. We can and we must win our next two games against Sweden and Bulgaria," he stated.

Totti blames his boots

Football Italia

Francesco Totti's disappointing display for Italy against Denmark was partly down to his boots.

"There were times when it felt like my feet were on hot sand," said the Azzurri star. "It's absurd, nothing like that has ever happened before. I have two massive blisters, one on each foot. I was really struggling out there and it is a problem that I need to resolve."

Totti was wearing a new pair of boots which his sponsorship deal with Nike state that he must use throughout the tournament. The No 10 had already been struggling with his footwear in training and decided to change his boots after 30 minutes yesterday.

However, it made no real difference as Totti and numerous other teammates failed to impress in the 0-0 draw. Alex Del Piero was another major disappointment and was eventually replaced by Antonio Cassano.

"I was ready to offer more but there are no problems with the substitution," said the Juventus player. "We must not give up now and we know that we have to improve. We must identify the problems and keep working hard."

Tuesday 15 June

Denmark 0-0 Italy

Football Italia

Italy squad pose before match began.

There was no sign of the promised attacking Azzurri as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Denmark. Despite having a clearly stronger squad, Italy put in a disappointing performance in their Euro 2004 opener.

Boss Giovanni Trapattoni insisted before the game that his starting line-up was the most balanced that he could have selected but there was little evidence of that in the first period. Denmark really dominated possession against an unrecognisable Azzurri side that seemed pretty anxious - with Del Piero, Totti and Vieri anonymous.

Those Italian players who thought this game was going to be easy were reminded of the Danish threat after just six minutes when Jensen rolled a long range shot into Buffon's hands. Milan's Tomasson then claimed a penalty after contact with Cannavaro in the area.

Denmark were enjoying real freedom down either flank and reduced Italy's goal threat in the first 15 minutes to just a Totti free-kick. The Roma man tried his luck from 35-yards but saw Sorensen dive to his right for the award of a corner.

Inter's Thomas Helveg was getting forward and he forced Buffon to punch his powerful drive. The Scandinavians then caused real panic in the Azzurri defence with a curling free-kick that Tomasson just failed to get on the end of. Jorgensen then tested Buffon on the stroke of halftime.

Yet the best chance of the period fell to the Azzurri on 44 minutes. Sorensen made an incredible double save when he parried close range efforts from Del Piero and Totti - at least one of them should have really gone in.

There was a slight improvement in Italy's play at the start of the second half and they went close on 53 and 57 minutes. Totti played in a magic through ball for Zambrotta but he spurned his shot across the face of the goal from close range. Zambrotta then provided a perfect cross but Vieri's header was tipped over the bar by the 'keeper.

Italy needed to change and Trap brought on Cassano, Fiore and Gattuso all relatively quickly. The peninsula boys did start to look a little more dangerous but Buffon had to be at his best on 75 minutes. The Danes counter attacked but the Juve No 1 pulled off two great saves in quick succession against Pulsen and Rommedahl.

With time running out Vieri had another header towards goal which ended wide of the post, before Sorensen again denied Totti who struck another long range free-kick on target. The Roman was gifted another set-piece in the 89th minute but his effort sailed over the bar.

Italy had to be content with a point but expect them to be heavily criticised by their own media. Only the likes of Buffon, Cannavaro, Nesta and Zambrotta delivered - the rest of the Azzurri failed to turn up.

Italy given Danish lesson

Football Italia

Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni insists that the 0-0 draw with Denmark will be a good lesson for progressing in Euro 2004.

"We have officially entered the European Championship atmosphere and that taught us how this tournament needs to be played," said the tactician. "Our approach to the first half was completely wrong and it is a good lesson to the players."

Trap desperately tried to pep up the side in the second half and things did improve when Antonio Cassano, Gennaro Gattuso and Stefano Fiore all came on.

"We were better after the break and overall looking at their early pressure and our clear-cut chances, I'd say a draw was the right result," he claimed. When asked what the problem had been, Trapattoni pointed to a lack of movement off the ball in the searing heat.

"We were a little too static and stretched out, so that made it incredibly difficult in midfield as they went straight past us," he explained. "I expected tough marking on Francesco Totti, then I moved him into a deeper role and there was an improvement."

Group C is set to be more evenly balanced than some fans had hoped, although Trapattoni had said before the tournament that Denmark were their toughest opponents in this round.

"Now we'll see what Sweden and Bulgaria do tonight but obviously we hope that ends in a draw so that we will all be on level terms," concluded Trap.

Azzurri stars remain upbeat

Football Italia

Italy's Gianluigi Buffon says he's happy with his performance but not the result after the 0-0 draw with Denmark. The Italian No 1 has not had his best Serie A season with Juventus but performed some stunning saves to keep the Danes out.

"I must also prove that I deserve this first team jersey and occasionally I manage to do that! I would have preferred a win but never mind," he said.

Danish goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen was also the star of the show with some great blocks and he was voted Man of the Match. "There was one double save that was particularly impressive so it is the correct decision," conceded Buffon.

The Italian media was disappointed to see that the Danish supporters outnumbered the Azzurri followers in the Stadium. "Unfortunately, the Italian fans tend to wait until the latter stages to come out and cheer on the team," he added. "Let's hope we get to see them!"

The 0-0 draw was an unusual result for the Azzurri, as they had scored in their last 19 consecutive games. It is also only the fourth time in 41 matches under Giovanni Trapattoni where they have failed to hit the back of the net.

Fabio Cannavaro claims that Denmark had the upper hand on a purely physical level in the heat of Guimaraes. "We knew they'd be a tough team to take on," said the captain. "But we were perhaps surprised by how alert and bright they were in the first half and they certainly ran a lot more than us."

The general feeling in the Azzurri camp is that this is a positive result against the strongest opponent in Group C.

"If we are to qualify from this Group, then we must win our next two games. It really is that simple. The standard at this level is very high, so you're punished at the slightest error. You need to stay focused at every moment of the match and both teams had chances to score."

However, Henrik Larsson's Sweden are up next and were the seeds in the draw for this tournament.

"I have always said this is a tough Group, as Denmark and Sweden stop you from playing and try to mould themselves around your own system," continued Cannavaro. "The Swedes have greater quality, but the important thing is to stay calm and find our concentration to carry on."

The Inter defender was caught up in a few scuffles with Milan hitman Jon Dahl Tomasson. "He has picked up a few things in Serie A and every time the ball came into the box he went to ground. It isn't fair play and we had a few words.

"We did well in defence, but a team like Italy should always try to attack, especially with the quality of players we have up there."

Gianluca Zambrotta was less attacking than in previous outings, but assured it was due to the Danish tactical shape.

"Denmark had two very advanced wingers, so I couldn't really push forward as much and needed to cover their runs. In the second half they got more tired and couldn't keep running up and down the flank, so I had more chance to push up.

"I always had to go one on one with their midfielder, especially as Alessandro Del Piero isn't really a winger and therefore needed more coverage," he noted. "We struggled in the first half even though we had some good chances to score, but the second half was definitely better in all areas of the field.

"Now we will examine our mistakes and try not to repeat them, as we are certainly not satisfied with this performance. It's only the first game and we have the opportunity to recover."

Capello asks for Joaquin

Football Italia

Juventus boss Fabio Capello is understood to have requested the services of Spanish ace Joaquin Sanchez. Capello is a massive fan of the right-sided midfielder and he's asked transfer guru Luciano Moggi to make an enquiry.

The tactician already wanted the 22-year-old at Roma two years ago but the capital side didn't deliver. Now Capello is hoping that his new club could successfully capture the Betis Seville starlet.

However, the Turin giants may struggle to pull off the proposed swoop given his transfer fee. Betis value the youngster at a massive £18m, a figure that the Old Lady of Italian football are unlikely to offer.

Juve may find it simpler to content Capello with the capture of Inter stopper Fabio Cannavaro. A swap deal with Lilian Thuram still seems on.

Trez set for Juve stay

Football Italia

David Trezeguet has confirmed that he will remain at Juventus after making peace with the club.

The Frenchman was expected to be sold by the giants after failing to agree terms over a new contract. However, the striker has revealed that he is on the verge of signing an extension with the Delle Alpi outfit.

"My father Jorge (who is also his agent) will be in Turin soon to sign the agreement," revealed the former Monaco player. "There are still a few details to iron out but it is almost done. Luciano Moggi has called and we are in talks. I'm confident a deal will be done."

A divorce was seemingly on the cards. Trezeguet had stated that he wanted a move to Barca, while Juve started to target Christian Vieri. Yet Inter now look unlikely to sell the Italian and new Juve boss Fabio Capello is keen on keeping Trez.

"Capello is a great tactician," added the player. "He is one of the reasons why I've moved closer to Juventus."

Another known problem was that Trezeguet wanted a substantial pay increase, something the club were not too keen on. "There is a wage structure in Turin and I will conform to these numbers," he added. "I'm really happy because Juventus were always my first choice."

The Old Lady must renew their deal with the player or they risk losing him for nothing next summer as his contract expires in 2005.

Trezeguet: I'm closer to Juventus than Barcelona

Tribal Football

Juventus striker David Trezeguet admits he is unlikely to sign for Barcelona. "At the moment I am nearer Juventus than leaving and signing for Barcelona," he said yesterday. "The call from (Juve coach) Fabio Capello was very important.

"My priority was to join Barcelona, because they wanted me. But unfortunately the two clubs have been unable to agree a transfer fee for me."

Trezeguet's agent Antonio Caliendo was on Catalan radio last night insisting that Barca still had a chance of landing the striker and that Juve were still to convince the Frenchman that he had a future in Italy.

Barcelona weigh up bid for AC Milan's Coloccini

Tribal Football

Barcelona are eyeing AC Milan defender Fabricio Coloccini. The Argentina international spent last season on-loan at Villarreal, who are hoping to sign him again for another 12 months. Barca are considering tabling a bid for Coloccini's outright transfer, with the centre-half regarded as one of the best young players in the La Liga.

Alex: I'll be Euro star

Football Italia

Italy's Alessandro Del Piero is convinced that he can be a major star at the European Championships. The Juventus ace hasn't had the best of seasons but he believes he will play a major role for the Azzurri.

"I'm well both physically and mentally," he said after he was confirmed in the starting line-up to face Denmark. "I feel that this will be my Euro 2004. We all have a great desire to play and help Italy win.

"It is true that I did suffer with injuries in the past campaign but that is now an advantage as I am well rested."

Some sections of the media believe that Del Piero should be dropped in favour of Antonio Cassano. Yet Del Piero has seen it all before after he was rivalled with Roberto Baggio and Francesco Totti in past tournaments.

"I'm not scared by the duels," he stated. "I'm the player who has the starting shirt and that makes the difference."

The Bianconeri No 10 was then informed that his new club boss Fabio Capello would be at the game. "Good, I hope he enjoys watching us," concluded Alex.

Trap goes for balance

Football Italia

Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni is certain that the team he's picked to face Denmark this evening will deliver.

The tactician has kept faith with the line-up that was expected despite calls by the media for changes. The Azzurri will start with Buffon, Panucci, Nesta, Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Perrotta, Zanetti, Camoranesi, Totti, Del Piero, Vieri.

"I've picked these men because all of my doubts have vanished," stated the veteran Coach. "I needed to assess the fitness of a number of players such as Camoranesi, Cannavaro and Del Piero.

"I'm aware that Gennaro Gattuso is in good form but he won't start because I don't want to break the Perrotta-Zanetti partnership. Pirlo? He's more of a playmaker. The side that I've picked is the one that offers me the most balance."

Trap has kept faith with Del Piero on the left despite the fact that he's had an injury plagued last year. "Who should play instead? Alex is feeling good," he insisted. "The side has already been designed. I've told him to be calm."

Some sections of the media have called for Antonio Cassano to start ahead of the Juve captain. "He can still come on if we have to change things," he added. "If they man mark Totti then we'll modify our system."

Why has Camoranesi edged out Fiore? "He offers me more guarantees on a tactical level. Fiore gives me less balance."

Trap admitted that his side are superior to Denmark but insisted that Italy were not guaranteed victory. "There is nothing for certain in football," he warned. "But I have the conviction of my squad who are all in good shape."

Trapattoni confident as Italy prepares for Danes

Tribal Football

Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni is confident going into today's match against Denmark. Trapattoni said: "Jon Dahl Tomasson, Thomas Helveg and Martin Jorgensen know Italian football well, so they will have done their homework.

"The Nordic teams have always been tough, but now they play with a little Latin flair. We know we can expect a tough match, but we have prepared well and we are full of confidence."

Trapattoni added: "The Danes have learnt from other countries. They have a lot of players who have played elsewhere in Europe and they bring in another influence."

No changes for Italy

Football Italia

Giovanni Trapattoni will keep faith with his preferred starting line-up for Italy's game against Denmark. The two teams meet on Monday and today's training session didn't see Trap experiment with the side.

Gigi Buffon will be in goal, guarded by a defence of Christian Panucci, Fabio Cannavaro, Alessandro Nesta and Gianluca Zambrotta. Cristiano Zanetti and Simone Perrotta will be the holding midfield duo instead of Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso.

Alex Del Piero, Francesco Totti and Mauro Camoranesi - who has pipped Stefano Fiore for a shirt - will support lone striker Christian Vieri.

Tottenham target Jankulovski: I want to join Nedved at Juventus

Tribal Football

Udinese midfielder Marek Jankulovski has reaffirmed his ambition to join Juventus. The Czech Republic international is being chased by Juve and Tottenham and admitted yesterday: "I know I am now ready for a great step in my career.

"It would be the greatest if I could play with Pavel Nedved, not just with the national team, but also every Sunday with Juventus!"

Barcelona nervy as Juventus make Trezeguet new offer

Tribal Football

Barcelona won't give up their bid to land Juventus striker David Trezeguet.

On the insistence of new coach Fabio Capello, Juve have offered the French ace a new contract. Italian press reports are stating Trezeguet has verbally agreed to sign the deal upon his return from Euro2004.

Barca insiders have admitted to Marca that the club is nervous, but remain confident they can find an agreement with Juve after the Euros, having already struck personal terms with Trezeguet two months ago.

Emo wants Roma wages

Football Italia

Roma could lose Emerson for nothing this summer if they fail to hand over his unpaid wages. The Giallorossi star is allegedly ready to sue if he isn't given the £700,000 - his salary for the last four months - that he is owed.

If the reports turn out to be true then it would be a massive blow for the capital club who are already struggling to sell the player. They've agreed a £12m fee with Real Madrid but the midfielder has turned down a move to the Spanish giants.

That is because the former Bayer Leverkusen man has agreed personal terms with Juventus. However, Roma don't want to release him to one of their biggest rivals - especially because of the frosty relationship between the two sides.

If the stories are confirmed, then the capital club will have around four weeks to pay up or Emerson could have his contract scrapped by the Italian authorities. That in turn would then see him become a free agent, allowing Juventus to step in without handing over the £8m that they are ready to offer.

Yet there is still a possibility that Roma could keep him at the club but leave him on the bench for the whole of the next campaign.

Messina want Bolton target Zalayeta

Tribal Football

Messina are chasing Juventus striker Marcelo Zalayeta. The Uruguay international is also a target for Bolton Wanderers and has been told by Juve that he won't be considered a first team player next season.

Messina have a strong relationship with Juve, though they can't match the spending power of Bolton.

Lazio keen on Juventus veteran Conte

Tribal Football

Lazio are being linked with Juventus veteran Antonio Conte. The 35 year-old is wanted by Lazio to guide their younger players next season as the Rome club undergoes a radical squad restructure due to their poor finances.

Conte has been with Juve for 13 years, but is interested in Lazio's offer after struggling for first team action last season.

Roma make offer for Parma defender Ferrari

Tribal Football

AS Roma coach Cesare Prandelli has asked his board for a third Parma player. After Matteo Ferrari and Alberto Gilardino, Roma are also in talks with Parma about fullback Daniele Bonera.

Roma have already made an offer for Italian international defender Ferrari - £2.5 million plus two players from their Primavera squad. But Parma are asking at least £5 million for the defender.

Celtic, Chelsea linked as Betis invite Joaquin offers

Tribal Football

Celtic have been linked with Real Betis winger Joaquin. Marca says the Hoops have approached Betis about the Spanish international, along with Chelsea and Real Madrid, this past season.

After refusing several big offers, Betis president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera is now ready to listen to bids for Joaquin and has already informed new coach Lorenzo Serra Ferrer that the player's presence isn't guaranteed next season.

Lopera has told interested clubs he will not do business for anything less than £17 million, but is now prepared to negotiate his transfer.

Davids opts for Barca

Football Italia

Inter have missed out on signing Edgar Davids as Barcelona expect him to move to the Nou Camp. The Dutchman was a known target for the Nerazzurri but he is on the verge of netting a contract with the Spaniards instead.

"I understand that the deal is nearly settled and that it will be only a question of time before he signs a three-year contract," Barca assistant boss Henk ten Cate revealed.

Davids did state yesterday that he had made a decision on his future but was not ready to reveal his plans. That increased speculation that a move to the San Siro was still on but that now seems increasingly unlikely.

The Holland star, a member of their Euro 2004 squad, has been linked with numerous sides as he is a free agent.

The 31-year-old already spent the last six months on loan at Barca after he was released by Juventus in January. His contract with the Italian giants expires this summer as no agreement could be reached over an extension.

Bayern in Pizarro hunt

Football Italia

Bayern Munich have become the latest team linked with a move for David Pizarro, while Marek Jankulovski is also on his way out of Udinese. The Chilean playmaker has been heavily associated with the likes of Roma, Inter and Juventus but a move to Germany beckons.

Bayern are keen on the 23-year-old who has developed into one of Serie A's best playmakers over the last two seasons. Munich, who may be on the verge of selling Michael Ballack, have been told that Pizarro will cost them £14m.

Meanwhile, Jankulovski is reportedly edging closer to a move to Juventus after he admitted he's keen on a transfer.

"If an offer from a big club arrived then I believe that I am ready for the jump," said the Czech international. "Juventus or Inter? It makes no difference really as they are two of the best teams in Italian football.

"If it happens then it happens. Otherwise I will just stay in Udine as I still have two years left on my contract." The left-sided midfielder has been linked with the Turin giants for some time and is liked by new boss Fabio Capello.

Thuram asks Capello for new role

Football Italia

Lilian Thuram has asked Fabio Capello to switch him to his favoured defensive position, while Antonio Chimenti signs a new deal.

"I haven't spoken to anyone yet," he revealed from the French Euro 2004 camp, "but the club knows my views on certain matters and I'd be overjoyed if I could be given the opportunity to play in a role I feel suits me better."

Former Parma defender Thuram has often suggested he should be returned to a central position, but Marcello Lippi consistently fielded him as a full-back. Now that new tactician Fabio Capello has been drafted in, there could be major changes in the squad.

"Capello is the greatest Coach in Italy," added Thuram. "We were all surprised by his arrival, as we were expecting Cesare Prandelli or Didier Deschamps. The club did very well to hide its real objectives."

The Bianconeri will keep hold of second choice goalkeeper Antonio Chimenti, who has penned a new contract tying him to the Turin outfit until 2006.

Juventus chief opens talks with Costinha

Tribal Football

Juventus chief Luciano Moggi is in talks with the agent of Porto midfielder Costinha. Moggi has opened negotiations with Jorge Mendez about Costinha's future, knowing that Real Madrid and Chelsea are also chasing the youngster.

Juve have offered a contract worth £450,000-a-season to Costinha and is prepared to bid £4 million for the midfielder's transfer.

Nedved offered £100,000-a-week after tax by Chelsea

Tribal Football

Juventus midfield ace Pavel Nedved turned down a staggering contract offer from Chelsea last week. The Czech Republic international was approached by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich about a shock summer switch to Stamford Bridge.

But Nedved rejected the offer, insisting he wants to stay with Juventus and win the Champions League. The News of the World says Nedved turned down a massive £100,000-a-week contract offer - after tax - from Abramovich.

Bolton, Middlesbrough approach Lazio for Oddo

Tribal Football

Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough have approached Lazio for more information on wing-back Massimo Oddo.

The Sunday Mirror says both Premiership clubs have been alerted to the Italy international's availability by intermediaries and are keen to bring the left-sided defender to the Premiership.

Oddo can be snapped up for a knockdown fee, with Lazio needing to sell to arrest huge debts.

Nedved snubs Chelsea millions

Football Italia

Pavel Nedved has revealed how he rejected a multi-million pound offer to join Chelsea, while reports suggest Adriano did likewise.

"I still have another two years left on my contract with Juventus and have no intention of leaving," assured the Czech international. "In order to stay in Turin, I turned down an offer of £4.6m a season net from Chelsea."

The Stamford Bridge outfit had been heavily linked with Nedved, but now he has confirmed in a press conference that a formal offer was made. Juventus signed the former Lazio player for £25m in 2001, but since then his international profile has skyrocketed with the prestigious Balon d'Or this year.

It is also reported that Inter rejected an eye-popping Chelsea bid for Brazilian hitman Adriano earlier this month. Newspapers in Italy suggest that patron Roman Abramovich offered Hernan Crespo plus £30m for the 22-year-old, but any approach was rejected outright.

Meanwhile, Nedved has rushed to the aid of his Juventus teammate Alessandro Del Piero following his complaints about constant comparisons with Francesco Totti.

"Totti is lucky," noted Nedved, "because the press is always on his side. Del Piero doesn't fare nearly so well and you lot take any opportunity to criticise him. I've played alongside Alex and know too well he is a great player."

Juventus and Milan will face off in the traditional Trofeo Berlusconi match on August 13 at the San Siro. There is an odd superstition which claims the losing side in this summer encounter will go on to win the Scudetto.

The Bianconeri won the last edition 2-0 with goals from Del Piero and Mauro Camoranesi.

Tottenham watch as Jankulovski reveals Juventus, Inter ambition

Tribal Football

Tottenham have approached Udinese about midfielder Marek Jankulovski.

The Czech Republic international has openly admitted he expects to be sold after the European Championships and its reported Spurs have already registered their interest with Udinese - and the player's representatives.

Juventus are also keen and Jankulovski admitted yesterday: "In Udine, I find myself well, but if an offer did arrive from Juventus or Inter, then I would be ready to accept it."

Juventus fielding offers for youngster Urbano

Tribal Football

Juventus are fielding offers from several Serie A and B clubs for young defender Orlando Urbano. The 20 year-old featured last season in the Coppa Italia and could be used in negotiations for transfer targets.

Udinese have asked about Urbano during talks over Marek Jankulovski's proposed move to Turin, while Messina and Lecce have also expressed an interest.

Panucci reassured by Ref

Football Italia

Christian Panucci has reassured Italy fans that the referee assigned to their opening game with Denmark is not another Byron Moreno.

The Azzurri are still haunted by the portly Ecuadorian's officiating during their 2002 World Cup exit to South Korea and there were worried looks when Spanish ref Enrique Mejuto Gonzalez was pulled out of the hat.

"He was in charge of several games when I used to play in La Liga," explained former Real Madrid star Panucci. "Gonzalez is a good referee and you can talk to him. He's not like Moreno, who would immediately look up at the giant TV screens every time you went up to him."

Panucci and teammate Mauro German Camoranesi will be the main translators for the Italy squad, as they speak fluent Spanish.

Pirlo wants Euro 2004 starring role

Football Italia

After Gennaro Gattuso's complaints, Andrea Pirlo has now warned he is not prepared to sit on the bench throughout Euro 2004.

"When I was called up," revealed the Milan midfielder, "I was happy just to be among the 23 players going to the tournament. Now this isn't enough for me any more and I want a first team place."

Giovanni Trapattoni's decision to ignore Milan's successful system - and its main stars Gattuso and Pirlo - has provoked discussion in the Italian press. However, the former Inter man is less abrasive in his analysis of the situation than his club teammate Gattuso.

"The 4-2-3-1 system is the one that allowed us to qualify, and therefore I think it only right that we should start with Cristiano Zanetti and Simone Perrotta," noted Pirlo.

"But things can change in football and I will do everything I can to get into that line-up. After all, I can easily play in a variety of different systems and my presence isn't necessarily linked to Gattuso."

The 25-year-old started out his career as a Trequartista, but hit the big time with Milan in a deeper midfield role.

"I am relaxed and patient," he continued, "because I know that sooner or later I will be given the chance to play, and I certainly won't let that opportunity pass me by."

Trap's main worry is that Pirlo cannot share the field with creative centre Francesco Totti, but the experiment against Tunisia was fruitful.

"I don't think us playing in the same side will be a problem," concluded the Rossoneri star. "After all, the friendly games with this system were far from disappointing."

Vieri on form in final test

Football Italia

Christian Vieri bagged a hat-trick in the last friendly test before Italy's opening Euro 2004 clash with Denmark. The Inter striker hit the back of the net three times in a 5-0 victory over the Belenenses youth team in Lisbon.

Alessandro Del Piero, who showed continual improvement over the last few days, and Mauro German Camoranesi scored the other goals.

Giovanni Trapattoni again fielded the eleven players who will take on Denmark on Monday evening. The friendly match lasted for 75 minutes with a 4-2-3-1 system that will be used in the tournament, the only change being Gianluigi Buffon playing in goal for the Portuguese club side.

In the second encounter, we saw all the other Italy players who won't be there from the start, and Antonio Cassano again pushed for a place with a hat-trick in their 6-2 thrashing of the local side. Marco Materazzi, Stefano Fiore and Marco Di Vaio were also on target.

Meanwhile, there was bad news for the Danes ahead of the opening match, as Jesper Gronkjaer will not take part in Monday's encounter following the tragic death of his mother from cancer.

Juve slam door on Vieri

Football Italia

Juventus have ended any attempt to sign Christian Vieri, but transfer guru Luciano Moggi insists they never entered negotiations. "At first you must dream," Moggi told Telelombardia, "and afterwards a dream can evaporate. But we never dreamed of Vieri."

This is quite a change of tune by the Bianconeri Director General, as throughout the last month he has repeatedly hinted at a swoop for the Inter striker. However, the Nerazzurri's refusal to cut the price tag and David Trezeguet's renewed love for Juventus saw that proposed return collapse.

The arrival of Coach Fabio Capello convinced Trezeguet that he should stay on and not accept a switch to Barcelona.

This doesn't necessarily mean that Vieri is certain to remain at the San Siro, as he has also been heavily linked with Real Madrid. Other reports suggest that the Italian international will hold on to his Inter jersey, but Coach Alberto Zaccheroni is packing his bags.

The club raised eyebrows on Friday when they called Zac to their headquarters for an impromptu meeting with directors, but President Giacinto Facchetti insists, "We only discussed pre-season preparations."

Should Zaccheroni be removed from his post, then the Number One candidate to take over is Lazio's Roberto Mancini.

Real close in on Vieri swap

Football Italia

A FIFA agent has been quoted as saying Real Madrid have an agreement to swap Christian Vieri with Fernando Morientes.

"We have already met several times with Inter to discuss Vieri's move to Real Madrid," revealed FIFA agent Peppino Tirri on Calciomercato.com. "There is a basic agreement in place with both the two clubs and the player himself for a straight swap deal with Morientes, without any additional cash sum."

"I cannot tell you when the switch will be concluded," he added, "but I can say that we are in negotiations and some details still need to be whittled down."

This week Nerazzurri director Marco Branca insisted that "no official bid for Vieri has been received" by any club, but the reports linking him with Madrid are gaining momentum. It would be a return to La Liga for Vieri, who had one very successful campaign with Atletico Madrid.

This comes after Juventus seemingly dropped their interest in the striker, as they renew contract negotiations with David Trezeguet. If the Frenchman decides to stay on in Turin, then the arrival of 31-year-old Vieri would be extremely unlikely.

At the same time, he is not entirely welcome to stay at Inter following rows with Coach Alberto Zaccheroni and the hardline supporters.

Roma stage Mexes swoop

Football Italia

Auxerre have confirmed that Philippe Mexes is merely days away from completing his switch to Roma, but Real Madrid shake off Totti speculation.

"We left the meeting with the clear feeling that we are close to agreement," revealed Auxerre technical director Guy Roux. "Maybe not tomorrow, but the conclusion is not far away."

The Giallorossi have the upper hand on their transfer rivals by agreeing terms with the player himself over the last few weeks, then on Thursday night made a formal offer of around £3m.

22-year-old defender Mexes had originally met with Fabio Capello, but despite the Coach moving on he remains adamant that the Stadio Olimpico will be his new home.

"It is true," continued Roux, "that Manchester United and Liverpool made offers, but there was no way we could convince Mexes to accept any other club."

"Philippe has been with us for seven years and we don't wish to end this rapport on a sour note, but at the same time we don't want to lose money on this deal."

Another meeting between the two clubs is planned next week, but a slight increase in Roma's bid should see the move completed.

Meanwhile, Francesco Totti's threats to walk out on the Giallorossi were undermined by a statement from his most likely destination.

"I don't see Totti or Ruud van Nistelrooy wearing the white shirts of Real Madrid," President Florentino Perez told Telemadrid, "because Coach Jose Antonio Camacho wants to strengthen other areas of the team and not only the front line."

The Spaniards have already signed one defensive player from Roma, bringing in Walter Samuel for £18m.

Davids keeps Inter guessing

Football Italia

Edgar Davids announced he has made a decision on his next club, but refused to name them.

"The doubts over my future have already been resolved," assured the Dutchman in a press conference. "I already know the side that I will be playing for next season, but I'm not going to tell you who it is."

The former Juventus midfielder is a free agent after his six-month loan spell with Barcelona expired. Milan dropped out of the race to sign him, so the battle was between Barca and Inter.

Nerazzurri patron Massimo Moratti claimed they had also lost interest after bringing in Juan Sebastian Veron from Chelsea, but Italian newspapers suggest negotiations are continuing.

The Spaniards have reportedly offered a three-year deal worth £2.3m a season, but Inter could raise that figure just enough to convince him that a return to Serie A would be the best option. Barcelona President Joan Laporta's comments also suggest that Inter have the upper hand.

"Nothing has been decided yet," noted the Spaniard. "It seems as if Davids wants to stay, so we have given him some more time to make a decision."
