Juventus plan Vieri raid

Football Italia

Luciano Moggi has hinted that Christian Vieri is a summer target for Juventus in a revealing interview. The Inter striker has been linked with a return to Turin and the transfer guru seems very keen.

"I've always liked Bobo and we all know what he is capable of giving," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "Sometimes when you buy a player you are looking for someone who is immediately ready for a great club. Bobo is one of these players."

Vieri could be signed as a replacement for David Trezeguet who is being heavily associated with a summer exit to either Barcelona or Chelsea.

"David wants to go and play in Spain but his father (who is also his agent) is offering him all over the place," continued the director general. "But there is no certainty that he will leave. What if Chelsea offered us Hernan Crespo and Adrian Mutu in return? I would say no."

The Old Lady of Italian football are also said to be on the verge of signing Under-21 striker Alberto Gilardino from Parma.

"Who doesn't like Gilardino? He could be an important investment for the future," noted Moggi. "'He's had the good fortune of working with a very good Coach. We need to verify whether Juventus would be an ideal situation for him."

Another issue that will need to be resolved is who will be the new boss in Turin as Marcello Lippi has confirmed his departure.

"The new Coach will either be Cesare Prandelli (Parma) or Didier Deschamps (Monaco)," revealed the club official. "We've spoken to both of the men and we will make a decision after May 12.

"The Parma boss works very well with young players and he's having a fantastic season. Deschamps was already a Coach when he was here as a player."

Juve close to Rodriguez

Football Italia

Juventus are just days away from signing Gonzalo Rodriguez, according to reports in Italy. The defender's agent was allegedly in Turin on Wednesday where he is understood to have held talks.

Rodriguez, captain of the Under-20 Argentine national side, was linked with a move in January. However, his transfer from San Lorenzo was postponed while his South American club resolved a few issues.

Juventus are expected to pay something in the region of £1.5m for the highly-rated youngster. Rodriguez, who can play in the centre or on the left, may be instantly loaned out by the Italian giants though.

Palermo are also very interested in the youngster, as they look set to win promotion to Serie A this season. Bianconeri official Luciano Moggi is set to meet Palermo chief Maurizio Zamparini to discuss a possible agreement.

Meanwhile, Juventus will go into training camp on Sunday night to prepare for their Coppa Italia Final. The Bianconeri face Lazio at the Stadio Delle Alpi on Wednesday after losing the first leg 2-0.

Tribal Football

Juventus are chasing Porto stopper Carvalho. The 26 year-old was watched by Juve chief Luciano Moggi against Deportivo La Coruna this week and preliminary talks have already been held about the defender's transfer.

However, Juve will face competition from Real Madrid, with the Portuguese press linking Carvalho with the Spanish giants.

Juventus in talks with Perugia over Ze Maria

Tribal Football

Juventus have approached Perugia about Brazilian wing-back Ze Maria. The 30 year-old will seek a move from Perugia when they are relegated at the end of the season.

Perugia president Luciano Gaucci has told Juve it will cost them £4 million for Ze Maria, while first refusal on Nigerian midfielder Christian Obodo is also up for discussion.

Meanwhile, Juve have accepted they are unlikely to sign AS Roma defender Jonathan Zebina in the summer. The Frenchman is leaving Roma on a Bosman in June.

Barca deny Trez deal

Football Italia

Barcelona have dismissed reports that they have agreed to sign David Trezeguet from Juventus. Speculation in Spain this morning had claimed that a fee had been finalised between the two clubs. But the Nou Camp outfit have today rubbished whispers that the striker will arrive in an £11m deal.

"Trezeguet is a player that interests us but we haven't sorted out anything," Vice-president Ferran Soriano stated. "There is no point in finalising terms with the player without first talking with the club that owns him."

Trezeguet is expected to be sold by the Turin giants at the end of this season as his contract expires in 2005. Talks over an extension at the Delle Alpi have taken place but he has yet to renew his current agreement.

Juve transfer guru Luciano Moggi has today revealed that the player does fancy a switch to Spain but a sale may not occur. It is also believed that Premiership giants Chelsea are very interested in the former Monaco ace.

Juventus chief: Trezeguet prefers Barcelona over Chelsea

Tribal Football

Juventus GM Luciano Moggi has confirmed David Trezeguet is up for sale. Chelsea are willing to pay around £10 million for the Frenchman, though Moggi has indicated the player favours a move to Spain - and Barcelona. "He wants Spain," said Moggi. "His father-agent is offering him everywhere.

"But it's not confirmed that he will leave. I'd accept only money, much money for him."

Samp consider Tudor move

Football Italia

Sampdoria are set to start talks with Juventus with the aim of signing Igor Tudor during the summer. The Croatian is expected to be axed by the Delle Alpi outfit after another injury plagued season in Turin.

Doria boss Walter Novellino likes the look of the international defender and a bid may be tabled. With the two teams meeting on Sunday, Samp director general Beppe Marotta and Juve transfer chief Luciano Gaucci will hold talks.

It is also understood that the two men will also discuss the futures of Cristian Zenoni and Aimo Diana. Zenoni is currently on loan in Genoa from Juve and it is still unclear where he will be playing next season. Newly capped Italian international Diana could move to the Old Lady after a stunning campaign.

Davids holds out for 3-year Barcelona contract

Tribal Football

Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids is asking for a three-year contract to sign permanently with Barcelona. Barca have offered a two-year deal, with the option of another two years. Davids is holding out for three years, particularly as he is taking a pay-cut to move to the Spanish giants.

"We are studying it and seeing how we can negotiate it," said Davids' agent Robert Geerlings. "One of the points of the discussions is the duration, but I have still not been able to speak with Davids."

Geerlings also revealed that rival offers had arrived from "Italy and England".

Carini reveals Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund offers

Tribal Football

Juventus goalkeeper Fabian Carini has revealed he is considering offers from Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid about next season. The Uruguay international has been on-loan at Standard Liege and said: "I must reveal that there are offers for me from Borussia Dortmund and Atletico.

"They are two great teams and of course I must think a lot about my answer."

Mutu to decide future after Chelsea announce new manager

Tribal Football

Adrian Mutu won't make a decision on his future until speaking with Chelsea's new manager.

"Mutu didn't have a great first season at Chelsea," Mutu's agent Andrea Pretti said. "However, at this stage, even stones know that Mourinho will be the new coach at Stamford Bridge next season and Mutu wants to speak to him before taking any decision on his future."

Reports have suggested that Mutu could join Juve as part of a swap deal with the France striker David Trezeguet. "I have read these stories and I understand why newspapers wrote them.

"However the truth is that there has not been any contact between Juventus and Chelsea for Mutu and the English club has never told me that they want to sell him."

Roma's Samuel stalls on Chelsea waiting for Real Madrid offer

Tribal Football

AS Roma defender Walter Samuel is stalling on signing with Chelsea as he wants to join Real Madrid next season. While Chelsea have made a £15 million bid for the Argentina international, Samuel is still holding out for Real to make a bid of their own.

Indeed, Real chief Jose Angel Sanchez met with Roma sports director Franco Baldini this week to discuss Samuel and also midfielder Emerson.

Real sports chief Jorge Valdano is convinced Samuel is the man to shore up their leaky defence and has held informal talks with his fellow countryman about moving to Madrid in the summer.

Real Madrid in Roma talks over Emerson

Real Madrid have held secret talks with AS Roma over midfielder Emerson. The Brazilian international is the holding midfielder Real have been missing since the sale of Claude Makelele to Chelsea last August.

Juve's Torres bid rejected

Football Italia

According to reports Juventus have offered four stars in exchange for Fernando Torres, but Atletico Madrid are refusing to negotiate.

The Italian press maintains that 20-year-old striker Torres impressed the Bianconeri so much during this season that they are set to make a quadruple bid. The club would be willing to hand over internationals Paolo Montero, Mauro German Camoranesi, Igor Tudor and Marcelo Zalayeta.

Juve would have the advantage over other clubs such as Manchester United and Milan, as they would allow Torres to stay in Madrid until 2005 or maybe even a year later.

However, Atletico President Enrique Cerezo has cut down any reports linking the hitman to a summer move. "It is pointless for other clubs to come knocking at our door," assured the patron, "because we won't open it."

Juventus are also eager to get negotiations under way early, as Torres is expected to make quite a splash with Spain. "We would be stupid to sell him now, as I am absolutely convinced this lad will have a great European Championship in Portugal, and after that his price tag will rise considerably."

The youngster has already impressed Italian sides with his goal in the recent 1-1 friendly against Spain.

Juve make offer for Jankulovski

Yahoo! Italia Sport

Juventus are ready to acquire Udinese's Marek Jankulovski to partner Roma's Emerson in midfield for next season. The two clubs have an optimal relationship and have already made contact about the Czech Republic midfielder.

Udinese are understood to be asking for a straight cash deal of €10million (£6.7million), while Juve are hoping to lower the price by including Maresca in part-exchange. Maresca is yet to sign a contract extension, and had openly said that he deserves a better deal than what Juve are offering.

Moggi targets Hubschman of Sparta Prague

Yahoo! Italia Sport

Juventus transfer guru Luciano Moggi is set to move for Sparta Prague's defender Tomas Hubschman. The €2.5million-rated (£1.7million) Czech Republic defender is recommended by Nedved, and will be an EU player once the Czech Republic joins the EU this month.

Chelsea in for Nedved and Trezeguet

Yahoo! Italia Sport

Chelsea is pressing Juventus for France striker David Trezeguet and Czech Republic playmaker Pavel Nedved. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich knows Juve need the money to finance their transfer activities, and has offered €25million (£16.9million) plus Adrian Mutu for the two players.

However Abramovich's primary target is Nedved, and any deal must include the forward. Barcelona are also interested in Trezeguet, but are not willing to offer more than €10million (£6.7million).

Tacconi backs Prandelli option

Football Italia

Cesare Prandelli should be given the Juventus job says former Bianconeri goalkeeper Stefano Tacconi. The Parma boss is one of the main contenders to take over from Marcello Lippi and Tacconi feels he would be an ideal choice.

"When it comes to experience and ability he is definitely the best one that is around," said the ex-international. "He's proved that he can work in any kind of situation, even in the most atrocious difficulties (given Parma's current financial situation).

"He is aware of how a man in his position should behave. He knows how to win, how to keep a good changing room and live a private life."

Prandelli is considered as the favourite to be heading for the Stadio Delle Alpi in the summer even if there are other options. Monaco boss Didier Deschamps has also been heavily linked, while Gigi Del Neri of Chievo is an outsider for the job. Whispers in Italy suggest that the latter is more likely to take over at Fiorentina, if they are promoted, next season.

Vieri in Di Vaio swap?

Football Italia

Christian Vieri could return to Juventus in a deal that sees Marco Di Vaio join sleeping giants Inter. Vieri is set to leave the Nerazzurri at the end of this season and the Turin outfit would like him back.

The Bianconeri are expected to sell David Trezeguet this summer and replace him with Parma's Alberto Gilardino. However, the club believe that the youngster could really learn his trade with the aid of the Italian ace.

Vieri would welcome a move back to the Delle Alpi and Di Vaio may also be keen on a new adventure. The Lazio youth product has failed to command a regular first team shirt at Juve since leaving Parma two years ago. Inter boss Alberto Zaccheroni, who doesn't have a great relationship with Vieri, believes that Di Vaio could be an ideal partner for Adriano in attack.

Meanwhile, Roma boss Fabio Capello is again being linked with the Nerazzurri job for next season. Zac may be axed if he fails to finish in the top four and the Giallorossi tactician has a proven track record of winning. However, all parties have so far rejected claims that the former Milan boss is heading for the San Siro.

Emerson reveals transfer truth

Football Italia

Roma ace Emerson insists no decision has been made about his future even if he has spoken to other clubs. The Brazilian is expected to be sold by the Olimpico outfit but he rubbished reports today that he had signed a five year-deal to join Juventus.

"I have not agreed terms with any other club," he said on Tuesday. "In the next few days I will sit down with the President and we will decide on my future together."

The former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder is continually being linked with numerous clubs as his contract expires in 2005. "Over the past few weeks I've read that I've been sold to all of Europe's biggest clubs," he added. "I've been reading things about me that I do not like.

"You can talk about me as a player but not as a man. I've been here for four years in which I have always given my best. I have a contract that doesn't expire until 2005 and I'm happy here. But before making a decision on my future I must talk to the club.

"It is true that there has been contact with other teams, but only because Roma allowed me to. But the final decision won't be just mine. The club will also have a say on where I will go."

Reports insist that Juventus are very keen but Roma are unlikely to sell to the Turin giants given the uneasy relationship between the two sides. "Would I be a traitor if I joined Juventus? No, I could only be considered as a traitor if I didn't honour this shirt," he added.

Roma fans will be sad to see the South American go but he did admit that there is a chance he could extend his current contract in Rome. "There is that possibility," he explained. "I'm not excluding anything right now. I just want to understand what the future holds for this club."

Inter, Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea have also expressed an interest in the 27-year-old.

Roma's Emerson: Chelsea have offered me contract

Tribal Football

AS Roma midfielder Emerson has revealed Chelsea have tabled him a contract offer for next season.

The Brazilian international said: "I have had many offers but I will have to take a decision with the club. Chelsea are still interested but it's not the same figures as last year. The possibility still exists but it's not the same financial terms."

Morientes denies Milan contact

Football Italia

Spanish international striker Fernando Morientes has denied that Milan have contacted him about next season. The Real Madrid star has excelled during a loan spell at Monaco this term and he is available for transfer.

Monaco can't afford to keep hold of the forward and Real seem to have little interest in having him in their squad. That has seen the 26-year-old linked with numerous clubs, including new Italian champions Milan.

"Fortunately I have received some excellent offers and I will accept the one that interests me the most," he stated. "Milan? Nobody has told me anything about them even if other top European clubs have expressed an interest."

Morientes could still move to Serie A though with two clubs in particular keen on his services. Juventus have been linked, even if Roma are also very interested as boss Fabio Capello is a massive fan of the player.

Samuel set for Chelsea

Football Italia

Walter Samuel's agent believes that he will complete a summer move from Roma to Chelsea. The defender has been heavily linked with the Stamford Bridge outfit and a switch now beckons.

"Chelsea's offer is huge and will be impossible for both the player and Roma to refuse," stated Raul Oliveros. Samuel's advisor Abel Balbo - a former Roma and Argentina striker - added: "Chelsea have made a big offer and the Italian club are considering it."

The stopper is set to leave the Stadio Olimpico at the end of this campaign in a bid for the club to improve their financial situation. Whispers last week suggested that the London outfit were prepared to pay around £25m for the Argentine.

The former Boca Juniors player, who is also a target for Inter and Juventus, will allegedly net a £3m-a-season contract.

Juventus offer £6M for Udinese's Jankulovski

Tribal Football

Juventus have offered Udinese £6 million for midfielder Marek Jankulovski. The Turin giants hope to take advantage of their strong relationship with Udinese to complete an agreement for the Czech Republic international before he plays in the European Championships.

Its been suggested Juve would also be prepared to include midfielder Enzo Maresca in the deal. Maresca has complained of not feeling valued at Juve this season.

Juventus threat to Atletico Madrid for Lequi

Tribal Football

Juventus are chasing Atletico Madrid defender Matias Lequi. The Argentina U23 international is yet to pen a permanent contract with Atletico and could leave at the end of the season. Juve have maintained talks with the youngster's management group, which still owns part of his registration.

Atletico can buy Lequi outright for £12 million, but does not have that sort of cash and could lose the impressive defender in the summer.

Inter Milan encouraged by Vieri swap talks with Juventus

Tribal Football

Inter Milan are encouraged by preliminary talks with Juventus about a swap deal for striker Marco Di Vaio. Its understood Juve chief Luciano Moggi is keen to see a straight swap agreed involving Juve's Di Vaio and Inter centre-forward Christian Vieri.

Di Vaio is also interesting Barcelona, but the Catalans have nothing like Vieri to offer Juve. Inter's technical staff are convinced the pacy forward would be the ideal strike-partner for January signing Adriano.

Chelsea cash to beat Barcelona for Trezeguet

Tribal Football

Barcelona are in danger of missing out on Juventus striker David Trezeguet. Club chiefs have been in talks with Juve and also the player's advisors since before Christmas about a summer move to the Nou Camp. But Barca president Joan Laporta is struggling to match Juve's new asking price - £14 million - and so far has offered just £7 million.

Chelsea are ready to meet Juve's demands, with owner Roman Abramovich giving the green light to a £15 million bid for Trezeguet this week. Talks between the Blues and Juve were held on Monday.

Chelsea held Juventus talks over £15M Trezeguet

Tribal Football

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon held talks yesterday with agents of Juventus striker David Trezeguet. The Independent says Trezeguet is now one of Chelsea's priorities and a cash-swap deal involving either Hernan Crespo or Adrian Mutu is being discussed.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has given Kenyon the green light to push ahead for the deal, though Barcelona have also been speaking with Trezeguet's advisors for some months. Indeed, its understood Trezeguet has already agreed terms with Barca, but the Catalans are yet to find an agreement with Juve over a transfer fee.

Chelsea have told Juve they're willing to pay £15 million for the French international striker.

Chelsea's Mutu linked with Juventus

Tribal Football

Juventus are being linked with Chelsea attacker Adrian Mutu. The Romanian international has faded badly since the turn of the year and is being forced to deny claims that he has fallen out with teammates.

Its been suggested Mutu would be interested in joining Juve if they appointed Cesare Prandelli as new trainer. Mutu worked with Prandelli at Parma before moving to Stamford Bridge last summer.

Real Madrid star Ronaldo ready for Chelsea move

Tribal Football

Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo is ready to join Chelsea at the end of the season. The Brazilian ace has been dismayed at the way Real's fans have turned on the team in recent weeks and would happily move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has his chief executive Peter Kenyon holding talks with Juventus over David Trezeguet. But the Frenchman is only regarded as a 'second tier' attacking target, with a big name also in the Russian's plans.

The Daily Mail says Ronaldo will accept a move to Stamford Bridge, but only if Abramovich asks him personally.

Agent confirms Inter Milan move for Lazio's Fiore

Tribal Football

The agent of Lazio midfielder Stefano Fiore has confirmed a move to Inter Milan is on for the 28 year-old. Federico Pastorello said: "It's difficult to see him staying at Lazio - he's contracted until 2005 and it seems to me complicated to assume that an extension cane be done.

"The worst thing for the club would be if he left next year, the club does not want a repeat of the Stankovic case."

A swap deal involving Inter striker Mohammed Kallon has been mentioned and Pastorello added, "Next season's far away, but I'm sure Lazio would be interested in Kallon. He could be included in a deal between the two clubs."

Arsenal favourites to land Juventus defender Thuram

Tribal Football

Arsenal are favourites to land unsettled Juventus defender Lilian Thuram. The French international admitted yesterday that "this could be my last season at Juve" after a poor campaign. Talks over a new, one-year contract extension have collapsed and Juve are now inviting offers for the 31 year-old.

Juve have been approached by Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid, though the Gunners are the only club to so far make a serious bid. Arsenal are offering £5 million for Thuram, though Juve are asking closer to £7 million.

Chelsea make formal £15M offer for Roma defender Samuel

Tribal Football

Chelsea have made a formal bid for AS Roma defender Walter Samuel. The Guardian says the hard-up Italian club are looking for £17million but Chelsea's owner Roman Abramovich wants to reach agreement at £15m. According to sources close to Roma, Chelsea will offer a four-year contract worth £2.7m a season to the Argentinian.

"Chelsea made a big offer that Roma are considering," said Samuel's agent, Abel Balbo. Colleague Raul Oliveros added: "Chelsea's offer is huge and will be impossible for both the player and Roma to refuse."

Juve consider Mutu option

Football Italia

Chelsea's Adrian Mutu could join up with his former Coach if Cesare Prandelli takes over at Juventus. The Romanian excelled under Prandelli at Parma which saw him earn a £17m move to the Premiership last summer.

However, the youngster has had a difficult campaign in England and a summer exit is a real possibility. Mutu started the season in fine form but he has struggled with life at Stamford Bridge in recent months.

Juventus have been interested in the former Inter player in the past and Prandelli would be keen to have him available again. Mutu has an excellent relationship with Prandelli and the forward could represent the future of the Turin giants.

The attacker could arrive in a deal which may also include Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet moving to Chelsea. The latter is definitely on his way out of the Stadio Delle Alpi, while Nedved may also be sacrificed after a difficult season.

Lucio will leave Bayer

Football Italia

Serie A clubs interested in Bayer Leverkusen stopper Lucio have been told he is available for transfer. The Brazilian international has been linked with numerous Italian sides and a move beckons.

"Any of our players are available at the right price," said Bayer general manager Reiner Calmund. "From what I hear, there are around 10 clubs that are interested in Lucio but only five have a real chance.

"That is the real number of clubs that have the economical power needed to sign a player of his standard. We may sell Lucio but only at a certain price."

The 25-year-old is one of the most highly rated defenders in European football right now after some excellent seasons in Germany. He was close to joining Roma last summer for £10m but the transfer collapsed after he failed to agree personal terms.

He has since been linked with moves to Milan, Inter and Juventus but there are also two foreign clubs in particular who are keen. Chelsea and Real Madrid are also very interested in the services of the 2002 World Cup winner. Bayern Munich are monitoring the situation too.

It was believed that Juventus were leading the chase out of the Italian clubs but Inter seem to have jumped the queue.

Roma set for revolution

Football Italia

After losing Lo Scudetto to Milan, the focus on Roma has switched to their likely summer sales. The capital club are expected to sell some of their big name players in an attempt to improve their financial situation. Although sporting director Franco Baldini insists that the club will remain competitive, high profile departures are expected.

The first heading out of the Stadio Olimpico seems to be Emerson. His contract expires in 2005 and talks over a new deal have stalled. The £25m rated player is set to leave for either Inter, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Barcelona, Milan or even Juventus.

Another South American that is reportedly set to be sacrificed is the very talented Walter Samuel. The former Boca Juniors defender, linked with Real Madrid, Inter and Juventus, is set to join Chelsea.

Norwegian international John Carew will return to Valencia once the striker's loan deal expires. Reports in Italy also allege that defender Jonathan Zebina and reserve 'keeper Carlo Zotti will join new champions Milan. Both players will be free agents in the summer.

Question marks also remain on star man Francesco Totti who keeps being linked with Real Madrid. However, it would take an astronomical offer for the capital club to agree to the sale of the Giallorossi fan favourite.

Juve boss search continues

Football Italia

Juventus insist that they have yet to make a decision on who will replace Marcello Lippi at the club. The tactician has confirmed that he will leave the outfit at the end of the season and speculation suggests that Parma's Cesare Prandelli will take over.

However, Vice-president Roberto Bettega insists that the Bianconeri are still considering their options. "We still haven't decided who will be the next boss of Juventus," said the former Italian international. "We are in the process of choosing what path to go down."

Reports in Italy are convinced that Prandelli is their man but Bettega insists no deal has been agreed.

"We have great respect for him but there are numerous names that are being linked with us in the media," he added. "Juventus will make an announcement of who will be our new Coach when we have decided as a club."

Prandelli seems to be in pole position, even if Monaco's Didier Deschamps and Gigi Del Neri of Chievo are also in contention. However, Deschamps would reportedly be a lot more expensive than Prandelli, while Del Neri lacks big club experience.

Monaco's Rothen: I could follow Deschamps to Juventus

Tribal Football

AS Monaco winger Jerome Rothen has admitted he could follow coach Didier Deschamps to Juventus at the end of the season. "I am happy at Monaco," said the 26 year-old. "I have a contract until 2006, but I do not rule out the chance of leaving.

"I have read that my trainer, Didier Deschamps, could be the new coach at Juventus. My future does not depend on him, but if we found each other at the same club I would be delighted."

Juventus chiefs Luciano Moggi, Roberto Bettega and Antonio Giraudo all watched Rothen in action a fortnight ago against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final.

Perugia 1 - 0 Juventus

Football Italia

Juventus are again defeated by one of the relegation strugglers for the second week running, but Perugia still have a slim chance of avoiding the drop.

Juventus lost a Scudetto in this Stadium, but following last week's humiliating 4-3 home defeat to Lecce they had every motivation to get a convincing result. Perugia were desperate for points, as a defeat would mathematically doom them to the drop.

It has been a controversial campaign and the referee was under close scrutiny.

The Bianconeri, who this week learned that it is Marcello Lippi's last season in charge, had a strong start but the finishing of Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet left something to be desired.

Perugia slowly began to take control, but Franco Brienza was stretchered off following an accidental collision with Lilian Thuram. English striker Jay Bothroyd was therefore given a rare chance to shine.

Pavel Nedved had the best early chance with a fierce drive that skimmed the woodwork. But Juve's defensive problems continued and Gianluigi Buffon rushed across his line to block a Bothroyd backheel.

There were penalty appeals just before the break when Nedved's close-range effort was closed down by Salvatore Fresi's arm, then Stephen Appiah nodded just wide.

When the deadlock was eventually broken at the dawn of the second half, it was only right that it was scored by a former Juventus star. Fabrizio Ravanelli turned Mark Iuliano and swung in a brilliant effort from the edge of the box.

Juventus fought back and Zeljko Kalac did well to parry Del Piero's ambitious backheel strike. Marcello Lippi introduced former Perugia hero Fabrizio Miccoli for the final half-hour in a bid to spice up their attack.

There was an historic moment on 74 minutes as Al-Saadi Gheddafi stepped on to the field for his Serie A debut. He is the first Libyan ever to play in the Italian top flight, but above all it was his first official appearance after an eventful spell with the club that included a ban for failing a nandrolone test.

There was also bad news for Juventus, as Ciro Ferrara was shown his second yellow card and left the Turin outfit in ten men. Ravanelli nearly doubled Perugia's lead with a trademark free kick that Buffon flew to palm out.

Post-Match Comments

Marcello Lippi: "This is not my Juventus. I don't know the reason behind this performance, but I am sorry that my experience here will end this way. This team and this club should not end a season with this attitude. The Coppa Italia is still up for grabs, but this is no way to prepare."

Fabrizio Ravanelli: "I knew that Marcello Lippi made his announcement about retiring before the game, I've worked with him - he's a great coach and a great man."

Agent: Juventus want Chelsea boss Ranieri

Tribal Football

If, as seems likely Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri leaves Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, there will be no shortage of job offers, according to his agent.

"Juve are an option but other clubs want to speak to him," his agent Jon Smith told The People. "We've had nine firm approaches so far from clubs in England and elsewhere in Europe but Claudio can't talk to them whilst he is under contract."

Despite the interest, Smith insists his client desires to stay with Chelsea. "The bottom line is that he would prefer to stay at Chelsea," he confirmed.

Morientes wants Chelsea move

Tribal Football

AS Monaco striker Fernando Morientes has issued a 'come and get me' plea to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. The on-loan Real Madrid centre-forward hopes to put himself in the shop window when he plays at Stamford Bridge this week.

He said: "Chelsea have already taken Makelele from Madrid and I'd like to go too.

"In London I'll try to do the best I can to convince Abramovich!"

Chelsea cash too much for Real Madrid in Samuel chase

Tribal Football

Chelsea will out-bid Real Madrid for AS Roma defender Walter Samuel in the coming weeks. The Blues remain favourites to land the Argentina international, despite a late push coming from Real sports director Jorge Valdano, who is a close friend of Samuel's.

The News of the World says Chelsea will offer Samuel £50,000 a week, after tax, to sign on at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal happy to wait for Ajax fullback Trabelsi

Tribal Football

Arsenal are waiting on Hatem Trabelsi to win a release from his Ajax contract. The Tunisia international is taking Ajax to court over a clause in his deal which allows his club to extend his current contract another two years.

The News of the World says Arsenal are favourites to land Trabelsi, but will not move for the defender unless he becomes available on a Bosman.

Chelsea attempt to rumble Man Utd move for Ferrari

Tribal Football

Chelsea will challenge Manchester United for Parma defender Matteo Ferrari at the end of the season. United have scouted the Italian international for the past three weeks and reportedly have also held talks with Parma director Arrigo Sacchi about the versatile fullback.

But Chelsea are also interested in the 25 year-old and are convinced they can trump United by offering a big cash deal to debt-ridden Parma before the end of the season.

Inter Milan find Roma's Emerson price too rich

Chelsea and Juventus are also interested in Emerson.

Perugia v Juventus: Preview

ESPN Soccernet

Juventus aim to put a dramatic week behind them with a win against a desperate Perugia in Sunday's game at the Renato Curi stadium.

Last weekend's debacle against minnows Lecce in front of the home fans was a painful reminder that all is not well for "La Vecchia Signora" as they were beaten 4-3. In the past two months the Bianconeri have failed to show the same determination and characteristics that had previously made them the most feared team in Serie A.

Marcello Lippi's announcement on Thursday, in which he confirmed that he will step down at the end of the season despite having a year left on his contract with the Bianconeri, did not come as a surprise to the fans nor to the club executives.

"When we were eliminated from the Champions League two months ago I thought it was the right time to tell the club how I felt," said Lippi who has guided the Italian giants to 13 trophies in a total of eight campaigns with the Turin outfit.

"I went to speak to the club executives and I told them that my experience had been unique, fantastic and marvellous but it was time to step aside."

The elimination from the Champions League was a blow to the Italian champions who are also out of the Scudetto race.

"After six successful years in the last two months everything has gone wrong," said Lippi. "We were taken out of Europe, out of the Scudetto race, it has been a massacre."

Lippi, who has been linked to replace Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni this summer, has no intention to end his era on a sour note.

"We need to focus on finishing the season in the best possible way.

"We can still point towards finishing second best in the competition and clinch the Coppa Italia trophy, that is our aim," said Lippi, whose team trail seven points behind second-placed Roma with three games left to play.

Juve will be looking to reduce their deficit with a win at Perugia considering Roma face the mighty Milan at the San Siro in this weekend's title decider.

However, their opponents Perugia have another agenda. The Umbrian club, second from bottom in Italy's top flight, cannot afford a defeat if they wish to maintain any hopes of staying another season in Serie A.

Perugia not only depend on themselves to maintain their status but on direct rivals Empoli. If the latter beat Bologna this weekend and the former fail to win, Serse Cosmi's outfit will be relegated.

"Sunday's game will see two teams ready to leave behind their recent disappointing results," said Cosmi. "We will go out very motivated but also desperate," he added.

The good news for the home team is the recovery of defender Salvatore Fresi with key defenders Marco Di Loreto and Souleymane Diamoutene undergoing a one-match suspension.

Veteran striker Fabrizio Ravanelli whose goal gave Perugia a crucial point in last weekend's draw against Brescia, will replace Dario Hubner who is struggling with a thigh injury.

Lippi will have all his players available with the exception of suspended defender Alessandro Birindelli.

Serie A salutes Lippi

Football Italia

Now that Marcello Lippi has confirmed this is his last year in charge of Juventus, the club and his colleagues pay tribute to the Coach.

"Lippi leaves Juve with the sound of applause ringing in his ears, including my own," stated Honorary President Umberto Agnelli.

"During this period Lippi has given us success, popularity and many stirring emotions. The credit goes to his tenacity, hard work and gentlemanly conduct, but we mustn't forget the great club that allowed him to do his best."

Since taking over at the Bianconeri in the summer of 1994, this tactician has notched up five Scudetto titles, a Coppa Italia, four Italian Supercups a Champions' League, a European Supercup and the 1996 Intercontinental Cup.

His disappointing term at Inter was followed by a year's sabbatical, but since returning to the club he has taken them to two consecutive Serie A titles.

Lippi's comeback was in place of Carlo Ancelotti, who twice failed to capture the Scudetto by a handful of points.

"The difference between myself and Lippi," joked Ancelotti, "is that I wanted to stay at Juventus, whereas he had the choice. The club didn't feel it could count on me anymore."

Juventus were left regretting that decision last May, as Ancelotti's Milan beat them to the Champions' League trophy in an Old Trafford Final.

The future is now unclear for Lippi, as he claims he will not Coach another club side, while the Italy job is reportedly lined up for him after Euro 2004.

"I took a year's sabbatical during my career," explained Fabio Capello, "and after many winning years with a single club it is certainly helpful to take a rest."

Fellow colleague Carlo Mazzone doesn't think that Lippi will be putting his feet up for long.

"Marcello has everything a man needs to be in charge of the Azzurri squad. I believe he is the natural successor to Giovanni Trapattoni."

Prandelli stalls Juve questions

Football Italia

Cesare Prandelli is expected to take over at Juventus next season, but insists his men must concentrate on grabbing fourth place.

"I am so focused on helping Parma get into the Champions' League that I couldn't possibly be affected by newspaper talk," claimed the Coach. "I spoke with my players today and asked them to only answer questions on this team until the end of the season, out of respect for each other and the fans."

Marcello Lippi's confirmation that this would be his final year in charge of Juventus opened the floodgates to already existing speculation on his successor. Prandelli's good work at the Stadio Tardini, and his past as a Bianconeri player, has seemingly allowed him to push aside competition from Didier Deschamps and Chievo's Gigi Del Neri.

"Lippi is one of the greats," continued his colleague, "both as a man and in a purely professional sense."

According to the newspapers in Italy, Prandelli will take several Parma stars to Turin with him, including Daniele Bonera, Matteo Ferrari and Alberto Gilardino.

"We have to stay concentrated as we cannot just fritter away all that we have done so far this season. Fourth place is still in our sights and we have the right enthusiasm and commitment to achieve our aims."

The Gialloblu welcome already relegated Ancona on Sunday afternoon and are expected to close the gap on Inter - who face a tricky trip to giant killers Lecce.

Defenders Lilian Thuram, Mark Iuliano, Paolo Montero and Igor Tudor are also up for sale as Juve look to clear the decks ahead of a massive squad overhaul.

Arsenal invite offers for Real Madrid, Juve target Ljungberg

Tribal Football

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is ready to listen to offers for midfielder Freddie Ljungberg. The Sun says Wenger believes the Swede, 27, is looking at other clubs. His high-profile, time-consuming commercial work for Calvin Klein has also concerned the Highbury hierarchy.

Juventus want the £12million-rated ace and would trade France striker David Trezeguet to get him. Significantly, Ljungberg was not at Spurs on Sunday as the Gunners celebrated clinching the title. Real Madrid are also tracking the Swede.
