Squillaci has Juve dream

Sebastien Squillaci says he wouldn't hesitate in leaving Monaco this summer if Juventus made an offer. The young Frenchman has been linked with the Italian outfit and he's hoping a deal can be agreed. "I know that they are interested in me," said the 23-year-old. "I'm happy at Monaco and I've had a great season here.

"However, if Juventus were to call then I couldn't possibly turn down a move to Turin."

The Serie A giants are looking to renew their defence but they may have to dig deep in order to secure the stopper's signature. "I have a contract here until 2007 and there is no buy out clause," he added. "Whoever wants me needs to negotiate with Monaco."

Juventus in Barcelona next week for Trezeguet talks

Tribal Football

Barcelona have reportedly tabled a written offer to Juventus for striker David Trezeguet. Juve directors Luciano Moggi, Roberto Bettega and Antonio Giraudo are scheduled to fly to Barcelona next week to finalise Trezeguet's move to the Nou Camp.

Barca have offered a straight cash bid of £16 million for the Frenchman. They are said to have already agreed personal terms with Trezeguet some weeks ago: £2 million-a-year until 2008, with healthy bonuses written into the contract based on success.

Juventus chief in Atletico Madrid talks about quartet

Tribal Football

Juventus and Atletico Madrid have held talks about several of eachother clubs' players this week.

Juve sports director Luciano Moggi was in Madrid on Tuesday to meet with Atletico counterpart Toni Munoz. On the agenda were the futures of four Juve players: Paolo Montero, Igor Tudor, Marcelo Zalayeta and Mauro Camoranesi. Also discussed were Atletico pair Matias Lequi and Fernando Torres.

Talks never went beyond the preliminary stage, though it is clear both clubs are keen to maintain a strong relationship, which saw Juve midfielder Ruben Olivera join Atletico on-loan in January.

Juventus supremo wants Parma coach Prandelli

Tribal Football

Parma trainer Cesare Prandelli has emerged as favourite to replace Marcello Lippi as Juventus coach next season. Juve supremo Umberto Agnelli wants to open talks immediately with Parma about bringing Prandelli to Turin next season.

Monaco trainer Didier Deschamps has also been linked with Lippi's job, but Agnelli's preferred choice is Prandelli, who has impressed with the way he has kept his Parma squad together following a series of the off-field setbacks for the club.

Juventus Goes Shopping In Montecarlo

Deschamps has been offered the job as Juventus manager for the next season but he isn't the only person that could make the move from Montecarlo to Torino.

Evra and Rothen are top of the list of the bianconeri and the French coach could convince them to follow him but the other player that Juventus is trying to sign is Morientes. The problem is that he is on loan from Real Madrid and the Spanish side hasn't yet decided what to do with the striker.

Samuel wants Chelsea switch

Sources in the Italian capital claim that Walter Samuel has asked Roma to sell him to Chelsea. The defender has been rumoured to be on his way out of the Giallorossi and he's keen on a Premiership switch.

Samuel is unhappy with the uncertain future surrounding the Olimpico outfit and it is understood that he has asked to leave. The stopper has allegedly held talks, along with his agents, with sporting director Franco Baldini.

Reports suggest that the Stamford Bridge outfit are ready to offer him a contract worth £2.8m a season. Samuel is tied to the capital side until 2008 but Roma could sacrifice the Argentine if a bid of around £15m is tabled.

Inter, Milan and Juventus have also been associated with the former Boca Juniors ace but he recently stated that he would only leave Roma for a foreign side.

Samuel holds Roma crunch talks over Chelsea interest

Tribal Football

AS Roma defender Walter Samuel held crunch talks with club officials yesterday about a potential move to Chelsea in the summer. Samuel attended the meeting along with his representatives, including Abel Balbo, and discussed the situation with Roma sports director Franco Baldini.

Chelsea are happy to negotiate a fee with Roma for Samuel, though Baldini has so far indicated he does not want to see the Argentine sold until the club's finances are made more clear.

Real Madrid have also been linked with the player in the past but they are unlikely to match the proposed bid from the London club.

Milan rule out Davids bid

Milan have dismissed speculation that Barcelona's Edgar Davids will be wearing the Rossoneri shirt next term. Some reports in Italy yesterday suggested that a three-year deal had already been agreed but the Italian outfit have denied the claim.

"There is no chance of us signing Davids," said Vice-president Adriano Galliani. "We already have a squad that we intend to keep as it is."

Davids, who is currently on loan at the Nou Camp, will be a free agent in the summer once his contract with Juventus expires.

Galliani has also commented on whispers that boss Carlo Ancelotti could be on his way out of the club. Chelsea have been linked with the former midfielder as Claudio Ranieri is set to be axed at Stamford Bridge.

"We'll keep him even if he loses the Championship," he insisted. "Ancelotti is not tempted by anyone. He is happy here and he will certainly remain with us for next season too."

Inter look to Lucio

Inter are reportedly ready to make a £10m bid for Bayer Leverkusen defender Lucio. The Nerazzurri are looking for a new stopper and the Brazilian international is high on their wish list. It is believed that Jaap Stam was their primary objective but the Lazio star is expected to join city rivals Milan.

Lucio is one of the most highly rated defenders in European football right now which means Inter will have stiff opposition. He was already close to joining Roma last season but he rejected the switch after failing to agree personal terms.

Juventus have also been heavily linked but Chelsea and Bayern Munich are very keen on making a summer bid too.

Bayer Leverkusen's Lucio: I'd love Real Madrid move

Tribal Football

Bayer Leverkusen defender Lucio has made a 'come and get me' plea to Real Madrid. The Brazilian international was asked about joining Real in the summer and told Kicker, "It would appeal a lot to me.

"In any case I would appreciate playing in Spain. In Italy and England it would be more difficult for a defender like me to continue to score the many goals I do."

He added, "I'm ready for the jump to a bigger competition and a bigger club."

Zidane voted Europe's finest

Zinedine Zidane has been voted the best European footballer of the last 50 years, finishing narrowly ahead of Germany's Franz Beckenbauer and Dutchman Johan Cruyff. Zidane, polled 123,582 votes, just 1,013 ahead of Beckenbauer, who totalled 122,569, with Cruyff third on 119,332.

The poll was organised by European soccer's governing body UEFA to mark the Golden Jubilee of their foundation in 1954. Zidane, who will turn 32 during this year's European Championship in Portugal is already the FIFA World Player of the Year, an award he won for the third time in December.

Ten Italians are on the list, led by Dino Zoff in fifth place. Juventus' Alessandro Del Piero is 47th, while ex-Juve great Roberto Baggio is in 24th. Other Italians include Paolo Maldini (10th), Paolo Rossi (12th), Franco Baresi (17th), Roberto Baggio (24th), Gianni Rivera (35th), Marco Tardelli (37th), Alessandro Nesta (47th), Alessandro Del Piero (49th), Alessandro Costacurta (50th).

Juve snub Didier move

Juventus have praised Monaco boss Didier Deschamps but they have ruled out his proposed summer arrival. Reports have suggested that Deschamps could take over in Turin next season if Marcello Lippi quits the club.

But despite impressing again last night as his side beat Chelsea 3-1 in the Champions' League, Luciano Moggi insists the Frenchman is not being targeted. "Didier was already a Coach when he played for us," said the director general. "He is obviously a gifted tactician but he needs to keep proving himself.

"Could Deschamps join us in the summer? We're a club that usually make announcements about these sorts of things. Easter is a period usually associated with surprises and that period has now ended.

"Marcello Lippi is the Coach and we will decide his future, as we are his employers."

Meanwhile, the reigning Italian champions are today being linked with Monaco striker Fernando Morientes. The Spaniard is currently on loan from Real Madrid and could move to the Stadio Delle Alpi in the summer.

Whispers suggest that Real would like to offer him to the Old Lady in return for defender Lilian Thuram.

Del Piero targets second

Alex Del Piero says he's ready to help Juventus in their quest to finish second in Serie A this term. The Italian has been sidelined for the last month with a thigh injury but expects to feature against Lecce on Sunday.

"I'm in good shape," said the Italian. "I was already available for the Parma game last week but now I'm even fitter. I want to make a contribution to the side in the last four games because our season is not over just yet.

"We want to finish second which would be important as we would then avoid the Champions' League preliminaries next season." Juventus are currently third, three points behind Roma. But that gap could be increased this evening if the Giallorossi don't lose to Lazio.

Del Piero will also use the last month of the campaign to prove his fitness to Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni. There are fears that the attacker may not be selected for Portugal but the No 10 insists he'll be there. "I will go to the European Championships," he maintained.

Zambrotta rejects Inter link

Juventus star Gianluca Zambrotta has dismissed stories suggesting that he will move to Inter this summer. Reports claim that the international will be offered to the Nerazzurri in exchange for the unsettled Christian Vieri.

But the converted left-back insists that he has no intention of leaving the Stadio Delle Alpi in the future. "Who says I'm joining Inter? There is no better club than Juventus and I'm not even considering these stories," he said.

"After all, I have only recently extended my contract until 2008 so I won't be leaving for Inter."

The Bianconeri have had a difficult season and look set to finish the campaign in third behind Roma and Milan. Yet the former Bari youngster insists that anything could still happen over the last four games.

"Milan are well clear at the top but you never know," he added. "We're aiming to finish second and will therefore watch the Rome derby this evening with interest.

"We have four games left and we want to win them all even if they won't be easy for us. Then of course we have the Coppa Italia second leg that we are hungry for."

Juventus are only outsiders to lift the Italian Cup though after losing the first leg 2-0 to Lazio.

Milan snap up Davids

Barcelona ace Edgar Davids has reportedly agreed to return to former club Milan in the summer. Rumours in Italy allege that the Dutchman flew into Milan yesterday for talks with the Rossoneri.

The Italian giants have admitted that they are keen on the player and it is alleged that an agreement has been reached. The international will sign a three-year contract with the San Siro outfit worth around £2.3m a season.

Davids was also wanted by Inter but he has opted to join Milan - a club that has a track record of winning.

The player, who is currently on loan at Barcelona from Juventus, will be a free agent in the summer. The Spanish club have stated that they want to keep hold of him but he seems to have already made up his mind. No official announcement has been made but it is believed that his arrival will be confirmed at the end of the season.

Davids had an unhappy stint with the Rossoneri after his 1996 move from Ajax. However, he was sold to Juventus in December 1997 and proved to be a key signing. Davids excelled in Turin under boss Marcello Lippi and then Carlo Ancelotti - the man he should now be working with again next season.

Liverpool join Chelsea, Arsenal bid for Ajax's Trabelsi

Tribal Football

Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is being linked with Ajax fullback Hatem Trabelsi. Houllier has been handed a massive £30 million transfer kitty to spend in the summer and The Sun says he is keen to speak with Trabelsi about a move to Anfield.

Trabelsi has declared he is leaving Ajax at the end of the season and has claimed to have fielded offers from Chelsea and Arsenal.

Liverpool draw up summer shopping list

Tribal Football

Armed with a £30 million war chest, Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier has drawn up his summer shopping list. Top target is Auxerre defender Philippe Mexes, whose arrival will depend on the Reds qualifying for next season's Champions League.

Houllier is also keen on Ajax fullback Hatem Trabelsi and will try again to land Nottingham Forest centre-half Michael Dawson. Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips is also being linked with a move to Anfield.

Juve eye Van der Vaart

Ajax sensation Rafael Van der Vaart could be on the verge of a summer move to Juventus. Reports in Holland suggest that the Italian club have joined Barcelona and Manchester United in the chase for the 21-year-old.

The creative attacking midfielder, who is considered as one of the most promising players in Europe, will be available for transfer. Ajax reportedly want around £9m for the Dutch international who could be a star at Euro 2004.

However, Juventus could get that figure lowered if they also make a swoop for teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swedish striker has been linked with the Delle Alpi side for some time even if the Old Lady have been associated with numerous other strikers.

It is believed that Parma youngster Alberto Gilardino is their primary attacking target for the summer.

Lazio president confirms Juventus contact over Fiore

Tribal Football

Lazio president Ugo Longo has revealed the future of playmaker Stefano Fiore will depend on whether coach Roberto Mancini stays next season.

Longo has confirmed the interest of Juventus in Fiore, saying: "The Bianconero club is on the traces of our player, but in order to know his future, we must first discover the future of Lazio and Mancini.

"If Roberto stays, he would not accept losing Fiore."

Inter Milan's Vieri can take pay-cut for Juventus return

Tribal Football

Inter Milan centre-forward Christian Vieri is ready to take a pay-cut to seal a return to Juventus. The Italian international had a public row with coach Alberto Zaccheroni over the weekend after refusing to take his place on the substitutes' bench against Bologna.

It's reported that Vieri is prepared to take a wage-cut from his present £3.5 million salary at Inter, to £2.3 million in order to move to Turin. Vieri's current Inter contract runs to 2006.

Juventus powerbrokers in Monaco to check targets

Tribal Football

Juventus powerbrokers Luciano Moggi, Roberto Bettega and Giraudo were in Monaco last night to watch AS Monaco against Chelsea.

The Juve chiefs are believed to have held informal talks with Monaco coach Didier Deschamps and also attended the match to watch defenders Patrice Evra and Sebastien Squillaci, plus Real Madrid's on-loan striker Fernando Morientes.

Another name in the frame at Juve is Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele, who could be shown the door at the end of the season by demanding owner Roman Abramovich.

Roma urges Samuel to ignore Chelsea, Real Madrid

Tribal Football

AS Roma chief Franco Baldini has held talks with Walter Samuel's agent about the Argentine's future. Roma are aware that both Chelsea and Real Madrid are chasing the defender, but are determined to hold onto Samuel until at least their financial problems are made clearer.

Baldini spoke with Samuel's agent, Raul Oliveiros, about the interest of Real and Chelsea and urged him not to consider opening serious negotiations with either club. Samuel has a contract to 2008 at Roma and has always maintained his first option would be to stay with the cash-strapped Serie A outfit.

Inter Milan chief Branca in Germany to watch Lucio

Tribal Football

Inter Milan sports chief Marco Branca was in Germany last week to watch Bayer Leverkusen defender Lucio. Branca took in Bayer's clash with Schalke 04 as he steps up his bid to bring Brazilian international Lucio to the San Siro next season. Lucio is also on the wanted list of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

Tuesday 20 April

Lecce return for Alex

Alessandro Del Piero is confident that he will feature in Juventus' next League game against Lecce. The Italian, who has just recovered from a thigh strain, was one of the substitutes for the 2-2 draw at Parma yesterday but he wasn't used by boss Marcello Lippi.

"I felt ready physically but the early injury to Alessio Tacchinardi complicated things for us," he told his website. "However, I think that I could be back next Sunday in the game against Lecce. There are four games left and we are looking to win them all.

"I was happy with the team's performance at Parma which proved to be a really tough game for both sides. My teammates put in an excellent performance, showing real grit and determination plus plenty of character."

Juventus twice came from behind to salvage a point thanks to an injury time header from Igor Tudor.

Barcelona coach reveals interest for Trezeguet, Van Nistelrooy

Tribal Football

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has confirmed the club is chasing Juventus striker David Trezeguet and Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Trezeguet is seen as the easier signing to attain for Barca and Rijkaard was quoted yesterday saying: "David is an unequalled player, this is sure. He would surely be an optimal player to reinforce us.

"But on our list, there is also the Dutchman, who is more forceful and technical than the juventino."

AC Milan watch as Barcelona prepare Davids offer

Tribal Football

Barcelona will hold talks with the agent of midfielder Edgar Davids next week. The on-loan Juventus midfielder has already been offered a three-year contract, worth £2 million-a-season to quit the Nou Camp and join AC Milan in the summer.

But Davids insists his first option is to sign permanently with Barca and will have his agent thrash out personal terms next week with club officials.

Juventus: Ibrahimovic To Take Trezeguet's Place?

Soccerage

It is well known that Trezeguet wants to leave Juventus and the French international has been knocking on the door of many top European clubs looking for a deal but in the mean time the Italian club has found his substitute.

His name is Ibrahimovic and he has been linked several times to the bianconeri in the past but this time it looks like Juventus can make it happen. The Ajax striker doesn't get along with his manager Koeman and after the last argument the coach left him on the bench accusing him on lack of commitment.

This situation is the ideal ground for the bianconeri to convince Ibrahimovic to move to Italy.

Vieri Happy To Leave Inter

Soccerage

Inter striker Christian Vieri says he would be happy to leave the club if he was no longer wanted. The Italian international stole the headlines yesterday after refusing to sit on the bench against Bologna.

He has been linked with a move to Juventus of late, and said: "I was happy at Juve but I'm also content here with the Moratti family. If he tells me that he has plans that don't include me then there won't be a problem."

Meanwhile, Inter coach Alberto Zaccheroni has denied that he allowed Vieri to pull out of the squad. "He said that he wasn't going to be a substitute," said Zac. "I made a decision but I want to underline that I didn't give him permission to miss the game.

"I now want to clarify the situation with him but I must always look after the interest of the team."

Juve Join Race For Maniche

Soccerage

There are no shortage of clubs ready to sign Porto star Maniche Ribeiro. Roma, Monaco and Lyon are all reportedly interested, along with Bordeaux, Marseille and Chelsea. But in the last few hours Juventus have reportedly joined the race.

Porto are keen to extend the player's contract but the lure of the Euro may attract him elsewhere.

Lecce name price for AC Milan target Chevanton

Tribal Football

Lecce have gone public with their price for striker Javier Chevanton. The Uruguay international is being chased by AC Milan, but is also being watched by Manchester United and Newcastle. "One thing is for sure: whoever wants the Uruguayan must part with £6.7 million," declared Lecce sports director Pantaleo Corvino.

Real Madrid plan to trump Chelsea for Samuel

Tribal Football

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is planning to trump Chelsea for AS Roma defender Walter Samuel. Perez is ready to break with transfer policy and spend big to reinforce Real's defence next season, with Samuel being the first name on his shortlist.

Chelsea are prepared to pay big for the Argentine, but Perez will use his trump card, Fernando Morientes, to beat his London rivals. Real are set to offer Roma the 12-month loan of striker Morientes, plus £12 million for Samuel.

Season over for Tacchi?

Alessio Tacchinardi may not feature for Juventus again this season after picking up a knee injury. The midfielder limped out of the 2-2 draw at Parma yesterday with a problem that could end his campaign.

The former Atalanta ace twisted his right knee at the Stadio Tardini and he will undergo tests this week in a bid to evaluate the extent of the injury. If the player doesn't feature again then his slim hopes of making the Italian squad for Euro 2004 will also vanish.

Meanwhile, Marco Di Vaio believes that the draw yesterday was the least that the side deserved. The striker came on as a second half substitute where he scored and impressed against his former club.

"We played well in the first half too," he said. "After the break we started to create a few more chances after Miccoli and myself were introduced.

"We didn't give up and scored an equaliser late on thanks to Igor Tudor's goal. I then had a chance very late on to score again. It is true that we only collected one point today but we were up against a very determined side."

Juve in pole for Gilardino

Stories suggesting that Alberto Gilardino will leave Parma for Juventus this summer are gathering pace. The Under-21 international has been linked with the Turin giants for some time and showed them his ability yesterday as he scored in the 2-2 draw with the Bianconeri.

Now Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini has suggested that a deal has already been done for the striker. "I've asked the Bianconeri officials to loan me the player for one season. We'll see what happens," he allegedly stated.

The 21-year-old is set to move to the Stadio Delle Alpi after netting 18 goals in the top-flight so far this term. Gilardino could join the Turin giants as a replacement for David Trezeguet who is set for a move to Barcelona.

Milan and Manchester United have also been associated yet it seems that the Old Lady are in pole position for the young gun.

However, the Juventus transfer guru has dismissed speculation that a deal has already been done. "Given Parma's current situation, it is impossible to negotiate for any of their players at this moment in time," said Luciano Moggi.

The Gialloblu, who are in uncertain financial times after the collapse of Parmalat earlier this term, are currently looking for new owners.

Milan clubs want Drogba

Milan and Inter have joined Juventus in the chase to sign the highly rated Didier Drogba. The Marseille ace has been heavily linked with the Bianconeri in recent weeks but a move to the San Siro could beckon. The international forward has been a revelation this season and reports in France suggest that both San Siro sides are interested in his services.

The 25-year-old has impressed many fans this season, especially in the 1-0 first leg win over Inter recently. Drogba scored in that UEFA Cup tie but also caused the Nerazzurri defence some real problems for the entire 90 minutes.

Lecce set Cheva price

Lecce have said that they will not sell the highly rated Javier Chevanton unless their asking price is met. The Uruguayan has scored 16 League goals so far this term and he is set to join a big club at the end of the season.

Milan have been hotly linked with the international but Lecce insist that they have no intention of giving him away. "One thing is for sure," said sporting director Pantaleo Corvino. "Whoever wants the Uruguayan must give us at least £7.5m."

Although Milan seem to be heading the chase for the striker, a host of Italian and foreign clubs are also keen. Lazio have also been linked with the player, while Valencia have been tracking the 23-year-old for some time.

Vieri set for Inter exit

Christian Vieri admits that his Inter career could be on the verge of ending after yesterday's extraordinary events. The Italian international caused a storm on Sunday as he refused to sit on the bench after being left out of the side to face Bologna.

"I told Alberto Zaccheroni that I preferred to train rather than be a substitute," he told TV show Controcampo. "I've spoken with Zaccheroni many times this season and he is free to make whatever decisions he wants.

"But he must also consider what is best for me. It was better for me to complete a full training session rather than play for just 15 minutes.

"I told him that and he said nothing. One of the club's physical trainers remained with me and then I went to the stadium to watch the game."

Vieri stated yesterday afternoon that he had no rapport with Zac and he seemed to confirm that last night. "My reference point at Inter is Massimo Moratti," he added. "I've always had a good relationship with him over the last five years that I have been here.

"I've already spoken to him and we discussed many things which are between Moratti and myself."

This latest situation will undoubtedly fuel rumours that Vieri will leave the club this summer. Could a return to Juventus be on the cards? "I was happy at Juve but I'm also content here with the Moratti family," he continued. "If he tells me that he has plans that don't include me then there won't be a problem."

Zac was keeping many of his thoughts to himself on Sunday by maintaining that he left the player out for tactical reasons. But he did angrily deny that he allowed Vieri to pull out of the squad. "He said that he wasn't going to be a substitute," said the Coach. "Vieri should have sat on the bench.

"I made a decision but I want to underline that I didn't give him permission to miss the game. I now want to clarify the situation with him but I must always look after the interest of the team."

It now seems likely that Vieri will be sold by the Nerazzurri, especially after the January arrival of Adriano. Juventus are keen but Milan, Chelsea, Barcelona, Roma and Real Madrid may also be interested.

Mexes goes cold on Man Utd, Arsenal

Football Italia

Auxerre defender Philippe Mexes has snubbed Manchester United. The Frenchman is insisting "I will join either Roma or Juventus", despite the interest of United and Arsenal.

Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been trailing Auxerre's French defender for years and even sent him a United shirt. But the 21-year-old's agent Olivier Jouanneaux said: "There is a good chance Roma or Juventus will sign him."

Chelsea to scout Porto's Maniche

Tribal Football

Chelsea will have scouts watch Porto midfielder Maniche Ribeiro this week. The Portuguese midfielder is one of several Porto stars expected to leave at the end of the season. Maniche will be scouted in Champions League action by Chelsea this week.

Parma 2 Juventus 2

Igor Tudor bagged a last-gasp equaliser at the Tardini in a very entertaining four-goal thriller.

This has always been something of a grudge match, but it has been calmed in recent years as Gianluigi Buffon, Lilian Thuram, Marco Di Vaio and Manuele Blasi were facing their former clubs. According to newspaper talk, Alberto Gilardino, Matteo Ferrari and Daniele Bonera will be repeating that journey from Parma to Turin in the summer.

Juventus again fielded a lone striker system with Gianluca Zambrotta in a more advanced role on the left wing. The Bianconeri had an aggressive start, but Alessio Tacchinardi limped off after just 14 minutes to make way for Igor Tudor.

Zambrotta forced a tough save out of Sebastien Frey when he dribbled past two players and aimed his deflected drive at the bottom near corner. Pavel Nedved looked much improved from recent outings and his fierce effort from distance whistled past the post.

Soon after Tudor battled past several defenders and managed to cross in for the unmarked David Trezeguet, but the Frenchman ballooned it off target.

Parma were dangerous from a corner kick on the half-hour mark and it took a panicked Stephen Appiah goalline clearance to prevent someone pouncing on the loose ball.

There was chaos on 34 minutes as Enzo Maresca wanted a penalty for Castellini's trip, but as Parma poured forward on the counter-attack they took the lead moments later. Buffon parried Mark Bresciano's angled drive, but he could do nothing on Benito Carbone's diving header as Marco Marchionni chipped in a splendid cross.

This goal increased Parma's confidence and they called Buffon into another tricky save on Gilardino's solo effort.

Marcello Lippi made a tactical switch at half-time, introducing ex-Parma hitman Marco Di Vaio for fullback Gianluca Pessotto, therefore moving Zambrotta back to a defensive role. But it was the Gialloblu who wasted a golden opportunity to double their lead when a cross squirmed away from Buffon and Bresciano incredibly blasted it wide of an open goal.

Juventus were playing with their defence practically in the centre-circle and it made Parma's counter-attacks all the more effective as on 55 minutes they rattled the crossbar with Bresciano's cross-cum-shot.

Fabrizio Miccoli also came on for a top-heavy Bianconeri line-up, but when Trezeguet sprung the offside trap on Nedved's splendid through ball he fired straight at Frey, then Bonera charged down Di Vaio's follow-up.

The second half was all Juventus and there were timid penalty appeals for Blasi's handling offence on Zambrotta's cross.

The Bianconeri eventually grabbed a deserved equaliser with a former Tardini hero. Trezeguet held up the ball for a simply blistering Di Vaio half-volley into the top corner. Lippi's men kept on pushing and Trezeguet's header skimmed the target soon after.

But just as they were under the most pressure it was Parma that restored their lead. Gilardino sprung the offside trap and his angled drive struck Buffon only to loop up into the far corner of the empty net.

However, there was bad news for the Gialloblu as Gilardino suffered an injury during that move and was replaced soon after. Miccoli attempted to curl his free kick round the outside of the wall and take Frey by surprise, but Matteo Ferrari spotted the ruse and cleared the danger.

At the other end Domenico Morfeo sprung the offside trap and his angled drive was flicked inches wide of the far post by Buffon's foot.

Yet deep into stoppages Juventus equalised on 2-2 when Miccoli held up Trezeguet's pass with his heel and rattled the crossbar, but the ball came out to Igor Tudor for a crucial header.

The Bianconeri could even have won it at the death with Miccoli's counter-attack and cross, but Di Vaio incredibly nodded wide of an open goal from six yards.

Post Match Comments

Cesare Prandelli: "It was a wonderful game and we perhaps should have sealed up the result a little earlier. We are at least satisfied with a squad that was not only determined, but also able to keep its cool under pressure. We believe in the work we do at this club and want to amaze everyone."

Marcello Lippi: "We started very well, but conceded a goal on Parma's first real effort. We were able to react and created plenty of scoring opportunities for a deserved draw. It's a shame we didn't make more of our chances, but I think we did enough to win the match. Alberto Gilardino is very talented and ready for a big club."

Juventus coach Lippi admits mistakes against Parma

Tribal Football

A last minute goal from Igor Tudor earned a point for Juventus at Parma yesterday. Benito Carbone opened the scoring for Parma before Marco Di Vaio equalised. Alberto Gilardino again had Parma in front with 11 minutes to go before Tudor's effort.

Afterwards, Juve coach Marcello Lippi said, "We made a lot of mistakes today. At the beginning, we have started very well, but then a mistake has allowed them to score from their first chance.

"After halftime, we have tried to level with much determination. We have taken risks and managed to salvage something in the end."

Inter Milan coach denies Vieri bust-up

Tribal Football

Inter Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni has denied reports that striker Christian Vieri snubbed a place on the substitutes bench for yesterday's match against Bologna. Vieri refused to attend Sunday's 4-2 victory over Bologna at Giuseppe Meazza after learning he would only be on the substitutes' bench.

"I only talk about technical things," said Zaccheroni. "In a group there can be misunderstandings of which I only talk about in private.

"I'm the chief of the team and I have to manage these situations. I have 30 players at my disposal and it isn't easy to make everyone content.

"Vieri's exclusion was only a technical choice because last Sunday he was hit by a bottle that caused him to miss training until Thursday."

Juventus coach confirms interest for Man Utd target Gilardino

Tribal Football

Juventus coach Marcello Lippi has declared his interest in Parma inside-forward Alberto Gilardino. The youngster is also being watched by Manchester United and could be sold by cash-strapped Parma at the end of the season.

"I've known him for a long time," said Lippi. "I first spotted him four years ago and was confident he would do well because of the seriousness he took training.

"I must say I am delighted to see how well he is developed. Today, he is a very talented player and someone who is ready to play for a big club."

Juve set for Rodriguez talks

Planet Football

Italian outfit Juventus are set to open negotiations to sign San Lorenzo's Argentina international defender Gonzalo Rodriguez. The Serie A giants have long been linked with the South American star, although an English side were also believed to be in the hunt earlier this year.

San Lorenzo president Alberto Guil revealed Juve wanted to bring in the star sooner, however passport problems delayed a swift deal being concluded. The South American outfit wanted €4 million for the player last year, and are not looking to let him leave on the cheap.

"Juventus saw our player in action during the World Cup Under-20 championships in Arabia last year and they wanted to have the player for this season," explained Guil. "However, some problems with the documentation of the player's passport stopped everything, but now they have told us that they are to travel to Argentina to re-start negotiations.

"We have been told that they will be travelling to Argentina next week. We also heard that they will make an offer a little bit lower than what we asked for the player last year.

"I must say that we will only accept their offer if we start talking about that amount. Gonzalo is a major national team player and we are not going to let him go for less money."

AC Milan step up bid for Lecce ace Chevanton

Tribal Football

AC Milan are stepping up their bid for Lecce striker Javier Chevanton. The Uruguay international is aware of Milan's interest, but insists he is happy at Lecce. Milan chief Adriano Galliani is keen to land the youngster and is offering Lecce striker Marco Borriello and goalkeeper Angelo Pozzi in part-exchange.

Middlesbrough tell River Plate to name price for Cavenaghi

Middlesbrough have contacted River Plate about star striker Fernando Cavenaghi. The Argentine youngster's agent last week confirmed he had held talks with Boro, along with several Serie A and Russian clubs.

The Sunday Mirror says Boro have approached River and asked them to name their price for Cavenaghi, who has been likened to Gabriel Batistuta.

Chelsea make offer for Betis winger Joaquin

Tribal Football

Chelsea have made a bid for Real Betis star Joaquin. Blues owner Roman Abramovich is said to have bid £14 million for the youngster as the chase for his services hots up. Parma v Juventus: Preview

Soccernet

Alberto Gilardino, currently the hottest striker in Italian football, steps out for Parma against Juventus on Sunday determined to put a dent in the Champions League hopes of the club thought to be his most admiring suitors.

With 17 league goals to his name this season, Gilardino is the top Italian scorer in Serie A and the second most prolific marksman overall, figures that appear increasingly likely to earn him a place in Giovanni Trapattoni's squad for Italy's friendly with Spain at the end of the month.

And with his club struggling financially, Gilardino could find himself on his way out of the Stadio Tardini as Parma find the financial clout of Juventus or AC Milan too great to refuse.

But that is for the future. Returning to the present, Parma will be relying on Gilardino to score the goals that enable them to hang on to fourth spot in Serie A and earn a crack at Champions League football next term.

A win over Juve would go a long way to achieving that, but the Bianconeri, currently third, are determined to snatch second spot from Roma to avoid having to negotiate the tricky qualifying round for Europe's premier club competition.

The match will hold particular significance for midfielder Manuele Blasi, who was signed by Juventus last summer but subsequently loaned to Parma as part of the deal that took Stephen Appiah to the Stadio Delle Alpi. Blasi is poised to return to Juve in the summer, but he insists that will not affect his approach to Sunday night's game.

"All I want to show right now is that I can be an important player for Parma between now and the end of the season," he said. "I have been out for too long this season (through a six-month ban after a positive test for the banned substance norandrosterone) and I want to make up for lost time.

"And I think this is a good time to face Juve. We are in good form, we are on a good run and we are confident of playing a great game."

Coach Cesare Prandelli is likely to stick with his 4-2-3-1 system, with Benito Carbone again preferred to Domenico Morfeo in the position just behind lone striker Gilardino. Marco Marchionni and Paolo Cannavaro are available again and return to the line-up.

Juve are buoyed by their 1-0 win over Lazio last weekend, a victory that keeps them one point behind second-placed Roma, who nevertheless have a game in hand.

The Bianconeri also welcome back skipper Alessandro Del Piero, who has recovered from a calf injury but is only expected to be on the bench, with coach Marcello Lippi expected to experiment with a 4-2-3-1 system.

David Trezeguet, linked this week with a summer move to Barcelona, will play as a lone striker, with Enzo Maresca, Pavel Nedved and Marco Di Vaio - a former Parma player - operating just behind him.

Winger Mauro Camoranesi is likely to miss the game with muscular problems, which is a blow to Lippi as the Argentinian-born Italy international was the Turin giants' most enterprising player against Lazio.

Del Piero returns at Tardini

Alessandro Del Piero will be on the bench six weeks after a calf strain, while Marcello Lippi remains cryptic on his future.

"Del Piero has worked hard all week in training," explained the Coach ahead of Sunday's trip to Parma, "and it would have been risky to field him from the start."

However, this and the fact he scored during a game between ranks suggests 'Pinturicchio' will make his comeback during the second half. It will be his first appearance since suffering a calf strain during the opening minutes of the 1-0 Champions' League defeat to Deportivo La Coruna.

There are other injury worries for Juventus, as Mauro German Camoranesi, Antonio Conte and Ciro Ferrara are not part of the squad.

"Parma are a very talented team," continued Lippi, "and I must praise the players and Coach for what they have achieved in such difficult circumstances. I always hold them up as an example for my men on how to conduct yourself."

The Gialloblu had to sell off several top stars during this season after the collapse of majority shareholders Parmalat. Yet they are still currently holding the fourth place finish that would take them into the qualifying stage of the Champions' League.

"This is a crucial game for both of us. The result is worth second place to us and fourth to them."

Nonetheless, the press continues to speculate over Lippi's future with latest reports suggesting contact has been made with Chelsea. "You are all tapping into your imaginations on this issue," he smiled during today's press conference, "going beyond what is remotely possible."

"But I understand that until I tell you what I'll be doing next year, you're stuck with your imaginations."

Prandelli: With Juve it's personal

Cesare Prandelli knows that more than points are at stake when Juventus come to the Tardini, as this is a grudge match. "We need to put in a fantastic performance," explained the Parma boss, "as the fans consider this to be like a local derby."

These two clubs duelled throughout the 1990's for the Scudetto, UEFA Cup, Coppa Italia and Italian Supercup. Although the Gialloblu have fallen on hard times of late with a well-publicised financial crisis, they are on track to enter the Champions' League qualifying stage.

"Precisely because we are doing so well at the moment we mustn't fall into the trap of thinking we can just run wildly at them," warned Prandelli, who has been heavily linked to the Bianconeri bench.

"Against such a strong team as Juve, you need to be smart and think carefully about the way you attack." However, this does not mean that Parma will sit back and soak up pressure on their own turf.

"Another terrible error would be to think of the result, as otherwise we'd end up struggling like in the second half against Lecce," he said of the 3-1 win. "Just because we now have that fourth place to lose doesn't mean we should change our whole approach to football. We must go for the victory."
Blasi faces Bianconeri future

Manuele Blasi's season was hit by a doping ban and Parma's financial plight, but the Juve-owned midfielder aims to make his mark against his future teammates.

"I have already played against the Bianconeri before," assured Blasi, "and I must say I never felt any particularly strong emotions. It won't be any different to facing any of the other big clubs."

Although his contract still belongs to the Turin outfit and he is set for a return to the Delle Alpi this summer, Blasi is yet to wear the Juve jersey. He was rumoured to be making a January comeback after the departure of Edgar Davids, but his ban for nandrolone use ruled out that possibility.

"Right now I just want to prove to Parma that I am important to them and that is all," pointed out the Under-21 international. "I have been out for too long this season and it is my duty to give 110 per cent for the team and fans."

This is traditionally something of a grudge match and often a fiery encounter, but points are even more precious to the Gialloblu after clambering into fourth place.

"I think that this is a perfect time to take on Juventus," he continued on the official Parma website. "We are on fine form and have won our last three games on the trot. They are always dangerous opponents, but we are confident of giving them a real run for their money."

The first meeting in Turin, which Blasi missed because of his ban, was a 4-0 drubbing and Juve are just starting to build up their form once more.

"Even if they are not 100 per cent fit," added the ex-Perugia man, "Juve are to be feared. If they are getting their injured stars back then this becomes a real test."

Alessandro Del Piero is edging closer to a comeback, but is not expected to feature at the Stadio Tardini, while Mauro German Camoranesi and Ciro Ferrara are doubts.

Juventus rubbish Lippi link with Chelsea

Tribal Football

Juventus have rubbished reports that Chelsea have asked about the availability of trainer Marcello Lippi.

It was claimed in yesterday's Italian press that Lippi had agreed a deal with Chelsea to move to Stamford Bridge in the summer. But Juve said in a statement last night: "We can categorically refute this story. The report has no foundation of truth in it whatsoever."

Barcelona contract offer for Juventus star Trezeguet

Tribal Football

Barcelona have reportedly made a major contract offer to Juventus striker David Trezeguet. Barca president Joan Laporta sees Trezeguet as his major target for the summer market and is said to have tabled a contract worth £2.35 million-a-season.

The Spanish giants are also prepared to offer Juve £12 million for the French international, who has stated he won't make a decision on his future until the end of the season.

Arsenal Gunning for Thuram

Lilian Thuram is said to be Arsenal's big transfer target for the summer as the Juve man prepares to join the French Legion at Highbury.

It is reported that talks have already taken place with a proposed bid of £5.5m plus a contract until 2008. However, this would include a reduction of his current salary, as he now earns £1.7m per season on a deal that expires in 2006.

The defender confirmed in a press conference this week that he has not had a good campaign with the Turin outfit. The lowlight of his season was the error that handed Alberto Luque the opening goal in their 2-0 aggregate Champions' League defeat to Deportivo La Coruna.

Juventus are preparing a massive overhaul of their squad, concentrating on the ageing back line of Paolo Montero, Ciro Ferrara and Gianluca Pessotto. As Thuram is now 32 years old and the defender with the biggest international profile, he is likely to be sacrificed in order to bring in fresh blood.

Potential replacements are Parma duo Matteo Ferrari, who is also of interest to Manchester United, and Daniele Bonera.

Arsenal in contact with Juventus defender Thuram

Tribal Football

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is moving for Juventus defender Lilian Thuram. The Italian press was reporting yesterday that Gunners officials have already been in contact with the French international's agent.

While their contract offer is for less than what Thuram is currently earning at Juve - £1.7 million-a-season - but is a longer deal. Arsenal are willing to hand 31 year-old Thuram a contract to 2008. The London club are also prepared to match Juve's asking price, which is in the range of £3.5 million and £4 million.

Man Utd scout Ferrari and Parma pal Gilardino

Tribal Football

Manchester United chief scout Martin Ferguson will not only be watching Parma defender Matteo Ferrari on Sunday. Ferguson will be in the stands to run the rule over Ferrari after his brother, Sir Alex, was urged to check on the Italian international by Serie A scouts last week.

However, the United manager also wants Parma attacking midfielder Alberto Gilardino to be scouted and could see the youngster as a replacement for Diego Forlan.
Jimenez: Juve are the ultimate club

The battle to sign Ternana revelation Luis Jimenez is heating up and the young Chilean admits Juventus would be his dream destination. "To be perfectly honest," he noted, "I would be happy with any of the big clubs in Serie A next season."

The creative midfielder has sparked interest with his performances throughout the current campaign for Serie B outfit Ternana. It is reported that Juve are ready to snap him up in order to tempt Lazio into parting with Stefano Fiore in a partial swap deal.

"Juventus are the ultimate goal for any football player," he continued. "Lazio would also make me very happy, while who wouldn't want to join Inter?"

"This would be a dream come true for me. As a child I always imagined setting foot on Italian soil and really making it in Serie A, not just as a small-time player. It might actually happen for me."

Agent: Juventus still in for Man Utd, Arsenal target Mexes

Tribal Football

The agent of Auxerre defender Philippe Mexes has not discounted the possibility of a move to Italy in the summer.

Auxerre coach Guy Roux indicated yesterday that Arsenal and Manchester United were in the boxseat to land the youngster. But his agent, Olivier Jouanneaux, said: "Roma and Juventus have as good a chance as anyone to sign him. It will be up to the club. But Philippe will also have a say on his future."

Cavenaghi agent reveals Middlesbrough, Juvenuts, AC Milan interest

Tribal Football

The agent of River Plate striker Fernando Cavenaghi has confirmed the interest of Middlesbrough. "Middlesbrough has asked the cost for an eventual transfer," revealed Nestor Sivori. "But the English are not alone.

"There are at least three Russian clubs interested in Fernando and also Milan, Juve and Torino have for a long time shown their interest."
