Inter will keep Vieri

Christian Vieri will still be wearing the Nerazzurri shirt next season says Inter chief Massimo Moratti. "The same thing happens every year," said the owner. "Lots of things are said but then he always remains with us."

The Italian star has been heavily associated with a summer exit after a difficult campaign at the San Siro. That has seen the 31-year-old, who is set to be a star at Euro 2004, associated with a move to Chelsea or a return to Juventus.

But Moratti's comments will undoubtedly please the player who himself recently pledged his future to the club.

"I hear these rumours everyday but I don't take any notice of them," he noted after the 3-2 win over Juventus. "My contract doesn't expire until 2006. At the end of the season I will talk to the club and we'll see what happens.

"I feel really good here and I have never thought about leaving."

Nedved makes Juve pledge

Pavel Nedved has underlined yet again that he intends to remain at Juventus until 2006. Speculation in Italy has suggested that the 31-year-old could be sold this summer but the Czech ace is adamant that he will stay.

"I still have two years left on my contract and I have a great desire to win the Champions' League with this club," said the midfielder. "The fact that I missed last season's final through suspension still haunts me. I want to make up for that."

The Old Lady were knocked out of this term's event by Deportivo La Coruna. The same side that humiliated Milan last night. "Every team can have a bad game like that," added Nedved. "It's hard to explain what happened but I'm sure Milan will still win Lo Scudetto.

"I'm disappointed for them because they are an Italian side but we know how difficult it is to go and play at the Riazor as they beat us 1-0. It's been a surprising tournament because none of the favourites, including Juventus, are in the semi-finals."

Nedved has returned to training this week after missing the 3-2 loss at Inter. He should be available to face his former club Lazio on Saturday.

"We need to win the game," added the former Biancocelesti hero. "We haven't beaten any of the big clubs this season and that, coupled with injuries, has hampered our campaign."

Kroldrup snubs Juve stories

Udinese defender Per Kroldrup is ignoring rumours suggesting that he is a transfer target for Juventus. The Dane was linked with the Bianconeri last week after another good campaign at the Stadio Friuli.

But he maintains he is not thinking about a switch to Turin as he still has more immediate objectives to reach with Udinese. "I'm really not interested in the stories which say I'm on my way to Juventus," said the Danish international.

"I'm just keeping my feet on the ground and thinking exclusively of Udinese at this moment in time. I want to end this season by helping my team qualify for European competition next term."

Kroldrup seems to be just the latest Udinese player to have caught the eye of transfer guru Luciano Moggi. The Old Lady of Italian football are also very interested in the midfield duo of David Pizarro and Marek Jankulovski.

Maresca set for new deal

Enzo Maresca is confident that he is on the verge of extending his contract with Italian giants Juventus. Talks between the player and the club have taken place but as of yet not agreement has been reached to prolong his current deal which expires in 2005.

"There is still a small economical difference between what I want and what they are offering," said the former Under-21 international. "But I'm confident that it will all be sorted out after Easter. We'll stay together until June 2009.

"I have a good and mature understanding with the club. Luciano Moggi was the man that brought me to Italy and I hope he still has faith in me today."

Maresca, who was signed by Juventus from West Bromwich Albion, has had a good campaign in Turin. But he admits that his relationship with Coach Marcello Lippi hasn't always been the best.

"It hasn't been the easiest," he recalls. "There have been times when we have needed to clear up a few things. But when you speak to someone face to face then things are quickly resolved. Will he leave in the summer? He isn't working like a man who already has his bags packed."

Italians join hunt for Finnish starlet

Planet Football

Italian giants Juventus, Internazionale and Milan are all hot on the trail of Finnish starlet Mika Vayrynen. The Heerenveen forward has been in sparkling form this season and that has already seen Tottenham's David Pleat take in one of his recent performances.

Holland's big three - Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven, have already registered their interest, but the player himself admits he is likely to move abroad.

"I want to move forward in my career and changing club is one option in the summer but first I want to look at options outside of Holland and then see if any big club in Holland wants me," Vayrynen told IS Veikkaaja.

The player's agent has now confirmed that there is strong interest coming from Serie A. "Italians have watched him for over a year now," said Ari Masalin. "They will keep scouting for the rest of the season."

Vayrynen is contracted to Heerenveen until 2006, but the Frisian outfit are unlikely to stand in his way - should they receive a reasonable offer.

Managerial Merry-Go Round

The recent shock Champions' League results could see a whirlwind of changes for Marcello Lippi, Fabio Capello, Claudio Ranieri and Didier Deschamps.

Much has already been said of Monaco boss Deschamps' possible return to Turin, a scenario he denied this morning. However, his surprise 3-1 victory over Real Madrid may still affect Marcello Lippi's next move.

"My future is today," admitted under-fire Merengues boss Carlos Queiroz. "I must only think of winning the Liga title and nothing more."

It is now reported that Lippi could give up the chance to take over the Italy squad in favour of a Spanish experience at the Bernabeu, especially as he was already contacted by Real in 2002.

Chelsea eliminated favourites Arsenal from Europe's most prestigious tournament, but it may not be enough to salvage the rapport between Claudio Ranieri and the club. Fabio Capello is said to be their top choice to take over after Sven Goran Eriksson signed a new contract with the England squad.

Last month the Roma Coach already made his intentions clear and noted, "I would love a new overseas experience and am yet to taste English football."

Capello has already won League titles with Milan, Real Madrid and Roma, so he would be the perfect man to guide the star-studded Stamford Bridge side. The successful tactician's contract with Roma expires in 2005, but President Franco Sensi has made it clear he would be willing to release him in the summer.

Intriguingly, there could be a straight swap as Rome-born Ranieri is being eyed as the successor to Capello at the Stadio Olimpico. A confirmed Giallorossi fan, the ex-Fiorentina boss would relish a return to his homeland with the club of his dreams.

"I am incredibly happy," he told Italian website Tgcom, "but this is not revenge over Roman Abramovich. I say we have been working with these lads for 10 months now and this result is the fruit of our hard work."

That 3-2 aggregate victory over the Gunners surprised many in Britain, but also made headlines in the Peninsula. "The English press has been very kind to me and it can only make me very happy," concluded Ranieri.

Lippi Wants Real Madrid

SoccerAge

Everybody at Juventus is convinced that Marcello Lippi will leave the club at the end of the season and the manager is looking for a new experience.

During his career he achieved a lot and he is considered one of the best managers in the world but he hasn't proved what he is worth in foreign team yet.

Lippi has already announced that he doesn't want to take Trapattoni's place as Italy's coach and after what happened to Real Madrid last night he is seriously thinking about moving to Spain.

Didier rejects Juve option

Didier Deschamps has closed the door on a summer switch to Juventus after his Monaco side reached the Champions' League semi-final. The former French international has been tipped to replace Marcello Lippi next term but the tactician has other ideas.

"I'm happy here," said the ex-Bianconeri midfielder. "I still have a year left on my contract and there is no reason why I should leave. In fact, the club want to extend my deal.

"Juventus? A lot of things have been written but I've never said anything. These rumours will only disturb Lippi and his players as they have some important aims left this term."

The Italian giants will certainly be keeping an eye on Deschamps as he continues to enhance his reputation.

Having lost 4-2 to Real Madrid in the first leg, few gave Monaco any hope on Tuesday of reaching the last four of the Champions' League. However, despite going 1-0 down, the Principality outfit came back to win 3-1 and they qualified on the away goal rule.

"Not too many people believed in our chances," added Deschamps. "We already caused them difficulties in the first game. This time we made less mistakes though and we were very alert in defence. This is an incredible achievement for us and French football."

They will now play Claudio Ranieri's Chelsea in the last four.

Del Piero back for Juve

Alessandro Del Piero is on the verge of being at the disposal of Juventus after he resumed full training.

The Italian ace has been absent for the last month after picking up a thigh strain in the 1-0 loss to Deportivo La Coruna. Del Piero played in his first practice game since the injury yesterday and had no subsequent problems.

Boss Marcello Lippi will decide this week whether to place the captain on the bench for the game against Lazio. If he isn't fit enough for Saturday's clash then he will almost certainly return at the Tardini against Parma.

Pavel Nedved is still a doubt for the weekend as he has fitness issues to resolve before his former club visit Turin. Both Lilian Thuram and Ciro Ferrara should be available though after they completed training on Monday.

Inter Milan hold trump card in Bonera chase

Tribal Football

Inter Milan have stolen a march on Juventus and AC Milan in the chase for Parma fullback Daniele Bonera.

Bonera's agent, Tullio Tinti, confirmed last week the interest of all three Serie A giants in the 22 year-old. However, Inter have an advantage in the recent signing of youngster Luca Perfetti from Pro Patria.

The 21 year-old defender is admired by Parma coach Cesare Prandelli and talks have already opened with Inter over a possible co-ownership of Perfetti as part of a cash deal for Bonera in the summer.

Liverpool ahead of Juventus for Mexes - Auxerre coach

Tribal Football

Auxerre coach Guy Roux has confirmed Juventus officials have been scouting young defender Philippe Mexes.

However, he has also revealed that several Premiership clubs are already ahead of Juve in the race for the French international. Though Roux refused to name the teams involved, its understood Liverpool have already held talks about Mexes.

"The Juventus scouts have come to see him," confirmed Roux. "But they have not never contacted us directly, which is contrary to the English clubs, as they have started official negotiations."

Chelsea ready to splash out on Betis ace Joaquin

Tribal Football

Chelsea are ready to make a mega offer to Real Betis for winger Joaquin. The Spanish international is high on Blues owner Roman Abramovich's shopping list, with Chelsea struggling for pace on the right-side of midfield.

The Daily Express says Chelsea are prepared to offer £25 million to land Joaquin, who remains a target also for Manchester United.

Chelsea chief Peter Kenyon worked on a deal for Joaquin while with United last year and has maintained contact with both the player's representatives and Betis since his move to Stamford Bridge.

Buffon confirms Juve deal

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has announced that he has extended his contract with the club until 2008. "It was easy to reach an agreement," said the international goalkeeper. "Juventus are a solid club and there are very few of those around today.

"I decided to sign in a year when we've won nothing because I'm certain that this team and club has a great future."

The former Parma man has accepted to take a cut in salary which will come into affect from 2006 - the date when his previous contract expired. "That was a decision that is in line with what other players here have already done," added the ace. "I think it is the right signal to give Italian football."

Juventus director general Luciano Moggi was understandably delighted to have tied down the goalkeeper for the immediate future. "Buffon is a vital figure in the building of a new cycle at this club," said the transfer guru. "He is one of the best in the world."

Juve keep hold of Buffon

Gigi Buffon is set to guard the Juventus goal for some time to come after reportedly agreeing a contract extension. The goalkeeper, widely regarded as the world's best, has struck a deal that will keep him at the club until 2008 - with an option for one more season after that.

Buffon, whose present contract expires in 2006, will now join Alex Del Piero as Juve's top earner according to whispers. Although the former Parma man will accept a 20 per cent cut in wages, he will receive extra income via image rights from the club. He should net around £3.5m a season.

Although the Old Lady have yet to confirm the stories, an announcement is expected over the next few days. Buffon will become the latest high profile player to extend his contract after the likes of Ciro Ferrara, Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessio Tacchinardi. Enzo Maresca is also on the verge of extending his stay even if problems remain with respect to David Trezeguet.

The latest speculation suggests he is unhappy with Juve's offer of £2.2m a season - that has alerted the interested Barcelona. If he does leave then his place may be taken by Marseille striker Didier Drogba. Juve scouts will assess his performance against Inter in the UEFA Cup this week.

Juventus chiefs hold summit to discuss transfers

Tribal Football

Juventus supremo Umberto Agnelli held a high-level meeting with his board over the weekend to discuss next season's playing squad. Directors Luciano Moggi and Roberto Bettega were in attendance for the summit, which discussed sales and purchases of players.

Parma's inside-forward Alberto Gilardino is a major target for the summer transfer window, while talks have already opened with Udinese over Marek Jakulovski, David Pizarro and also possibly Bilica Kroldrup. Udinese are asking for Enzo Maresca in part-exchange.

Meanwhile, Juve are also finalising Gianluigi Buffon's new contract, which will keep the goalkeeper in Turin until 2008. Veteran defender Lilian Thuram will also be tabled a new deal.

Deschamps rules out Juve move

Planet Football

Monaco coach Didier Deschamps has ruled out taking over at former club Juventus and revealed he could be in line for a new deal with the French club.

The Frenchman has been strongly linked with the manager's job at the Stadio Delle Alpi after a disappointing season for the Italian giants. Deschamps is a big favourite at Juve after a successful spell at the club and he is seen as the ideal choice to take over from Marcello Lippi.

The World Cup winner has established himself as one of the best young managers in Europe after his success at Monaco and he revealed the club are working on extending his stay at The Principality.

"Here I feel good. I have another year's contract and officials want to extend it," said Deschamps. "Many things have been written but I never told anything.

"I think to Marcello Lippi and his group, these rumours can trouble them when they have to achieve important aims, like the second place in the league and Coppa Italia."

Race on for Swiss starlet

Planet Football

Premiership duo Liverpool and Chelsea have been alerted to the availability of highly-rated Swiss starlet Fabrizio Zambrella. The 18-year-old has turned down a new deal at Servette and could leave the club in the summer on a free transfer.

The classy playmaker has attracted the interest of a host of clubs after a number of impressive performances for club and country. Roma, Juventus and Paris Saint Germain have all been watching Zambrella and there is sure to be an almighty scrap for his signature if he becomes available on a free transfer.

Inter watch Monaco trio

Inter scouts will watch three Monaco players this evening in their Champions' League game against Real Madrid. Transfer officials Marco Branca and Lele Oriali are reportedly in the Principality ready to observe three of the home stars.

Defender Sebastien Squillaci will be assessed after his fine displays have also seen him attract the interest of Juventus. The second Monaco player who the Nerazzurri are eyeing is Jerome Rothen. The French winger could be targeted to replace the unhappy Andy Van der Meyde. The final Frenchman that could be an option for the San Siro giants is the promising Patrice Evra.

Monaco, Coached by former Juve player Didier Deschamps, are currently 4-2 behind in the quarter-final tie.

Perrotta set for Chievo exit

Chievo have told Inter and Juventus that they are willing to listen to offers for Simone Perrotta. The 26-year-old has been linked with both clubs as he continues to shine at the Stadio Bentegodi.

The Italian international was close to leaving last summer but the move, thought to have involved Inter, collapsed. Yet the midfielder does seem to be on the verge of joining an Italian giant according to the Veronese club.

"We would obviously like to keep him but we believe it is time that he took a step up in his career," sporting director Giovanni Sartori told Guerin Sportivo. "He deserves that chance. We are in fact ready to negotiate with any club tomorrow rather than wait until after Euro 2004."

Sartori went as far as publicly putting a valuation on the former Juventus and Bari player. "We believe he is worth in the region of £7.5m," he added. "But we are ready to accept around £4m plus two players."

Both Inter and Juventus do have a number of promising youngsters that little Chievo would be interested in. However, it seems that the Nerazzurri are in pole position to sign him given Sartori's excellent relationship with Inter director Lele Oriali.

Spurs track Italian two

The Serie A duo of Stefano Fiore and Julio Cruz are said to be summer transfer targets for Tottenham.

Fiore has been at the centre of numerous transfer rumours lately after another good campaign in Rome. The midfielder has been excellent so far this term and has broke into Giovanni Trapattoni's first team plans for Euro 2004. The 29-year-old is liked by the Premiership side but they must beat Italian giants Juventus for his signature.

As for Cruz, he is expected to be sold by Inter after being frozen out of the Nerazzurri side. The Argentine was proving to be a valuable summer signing for the club until the arrival of Adriano. The January capture of the Brazilian has severely limited Cruz's first team opportunities and a divorce is on the way.

Cruz was already linked with a move to Spurs during his days at the Stadio Dall'Ara with Bologna. The former Feyenoord striker may be keen to experience a new brand of football after spending the last four years in Italy.

Ajax's Van der Vaart denies talks with Man Utd boss

Tribal Football

Ajax star Rafael van der Vaart has denied he's held talks with Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Holland international midfielder is being chased by Fergie for next season, but is also a top target for Barcelona. Van der Vaart admitted yesterday: "Alex Ferguson has not been to visit me.

"I don't know where I am going to go right now," he said. "I haven't made a decision. But of course I am aware I have to do that soon."

Atletico Madrid chief: Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea all love Torres

Tribal Football

Atletico Madrid sports chief Toni Munoz has confirmed the interest of a trio of Premiership clubs in whiz-kid Fernando Torres. Munoz told Radio Marca, "Everyone is in love with Fernando Torres.

"For two years, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have been on his trail. I have already said this on numerous occasions, Torres cannot be sold."

He added, "For next season, we will try to sign a great player, a true champion."

Liverpool approach Auxerre about Mexes

Tribal Football

Liverpool have approached Auxerre about defender Philippe Mexes. The French international is expected to leave Auxerre after this year's European Championships, with Juventus and AS Roma hot on his trail. Liverpool are said to have made an enquiry about Mexes this week, with his French club valuing the player in the £7 million class.

Rangers to beat Juventus, Roma for Chinese star

Tribal Football

Rangers have identified the first player they want to bring to Ibrox as part of their partnership agreement with Shenzhen Jianlibao. Midfielder Zheng Zhi is expected to move to Rangers in the summer, having also been watched by Juventus and AS Roma this year. Rangers have first option on Zheng Zhi, 23, thanks to a three-year deal signed with Shenzhen last week.

Ciro rejects revolution claim

Ciro Ferrara insists that no massive changes are needed at Juventus despite their disappointing campaign. There is talk of a revolution in Turin over the summer but the veteran stopper believes he knows what has gone wrong this term.

"It is true that we have failed in almost all of our pre-season objectives," he told Controcampo on Monday. "But you can't win all of the time.

"This squad does not need revamping. We have been heavily affected by injuries and I don't think there will be too many changes."

Juventus moved 10 points adrift of leaders Milan yesterday after a 3-2 loss at Inter in the Derby of Italy. "We are still in the race to finish second and automatically qualify for the Champions' League," added the defender.

One of the biggest criticisms labelled at the side this term is their uncharacteristic poor defensive displays. The Bianconeri have conceded a massive 34 goals so far- that's more than Milan and Roma put together.

The outfit haven't had such a leaky defence since the 1992/93 season when they let in 47 in 34 games.

Inter eye Juventus targets

Inter have set their sights on three world class players who are also of interest to rivals Juventus. Both clubs are set to make substantial changes to their squads next summer - especially in defence and midfield.

A new central stopper is required and Inter are assessing a move for Bayer Leverkusen ace Lucio. The Brazilian is a known target for Juve and Chelsea but Inter could join the race for the South American.

Another option for their rearguard is Walter Samuel. The Argentine may leave Roma in the summer and the Old Lady have been linked in the past 14 days. The former Boca Juniors ace revealed recently that he was tired of not winning with the capital club who could also sell for financial reasons.

The Nerazzurri have also upped their interest in Lazio's Stefano Fiore who is enjoying a wonderful season in Rome. The international is liked by the Bianconeri but Inter are reportedly ready to offer the capital club £8m.

Vieri ready to remain

Inter ace Christian Vieri maintains that he has no plans to leave Inter at the end of this season. The Italian star has been heavily associated with a summer exit but he insists he is happy with the Nerazzurri.

"I hear these rumours everyday but I don't take any notice of them," he said after the 3-2 win over Juventus. "My contract doesn't expire until 2006. At the end of the season I will talk to the club and we'll see what happens.

"I feel really good at this club and I have never thought about leaving."

The 31-year-old, who is set to be a star at Euro 2004, has been associated with a move to Chelsea or a return to Juventus. If Vieri remains at the San Siro, then his Coach will still be Alberto Zaccheroni according to President Giacinto Facchetti.

There are rumours that Zac could be replaced in the summer after a difficult campaign but he was backed last night. "Zaccheroni has done a good job," stated the legend. "He's had a tough time with injuries and suspension but he will be confirmed."

Facchetti was then asked whether the club could be set to employ Giovanni Trapattoni in some capacity after Euro 2004. "I think that Italy will have a good tournament and he will remain with the national side," he stated.

Barcelona president "will speak" with Rijkaard about Trezeguet

Tribal Football

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed their interest in Juventus striker David Trezeguet. "It's true the relationship between us and the Bianconero club are optimal and my relationship with Roberto Bettega is extremely cordial," said Laporta.

"However, before taking an important decision on the merit of acquiring the Frenchman, I must speak with (Frank) Rijkaard and establish if the player re-enters in his plans."

Man Utd boss confident of landing Ajax pair

Tribal Football

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is confident of landing Ajax pair Hatem Trabelsi and Rafael van der Vaart. The News of the World says the fullback Trabelsi and midfield ace Van der Vaart will be the first two of several summer signings Ferguson will make thanks to a £33 million war chest.

Van der Vaart has declared an interest in joining Barcelona, while Trabelsi is in talks with Chelsea and Arsenal. But Fergie is confident of landing both players when the summer transfer window opens.

Man City move for Brescia striker Caracciolo

Tribal Football

Manchester City are chasing Brescia striker Andrea Caracciolo. Its understood City have already been in contact with Caracciolo's agent about a possible move to Eastlands in the summer. The Italy U21 international could arrive at City as a replacement for Nicolas Anelka and carries a price-tag of £4 million.

Lippi contests Collina choices

Alberto Zaccheroni and Marcello Lippi both concede that Inter deserved to win, but the refereeing decisions have come under fire.

Zaccheroni explained why Adriano was left on the bench for the entire 90 minutes of this crucial encounter.

"Adriano is not 100 per cent fit and did not even take part in Friday's training session. It is completely untrue that I often choose between Vieri and Adriano, but they are very similar and we need to work very hard before being able to afford fielding both together."

The choice of Obafemi Martins proved inspired, especially after he also scored in the 3-1 victory in Turin. "If Martins is allowed to run into space then he will give any opponent trouble," added Zac, "as nobody in Serie A is as fast as him right now."

Stankovic had a hand in all three goals and put in perhaps his best performance since signing for the Nerazzurri.

"I was lucky enough to coach Stankovic at Lazio and realised that by placing him behind the forwards he was considerably more effective, but he is not a classic second striker who can play with his back to the goal."

"It was not a very tactical game," concluded the Coach, "but rather a fast-paced and entertaining encounter that both teams wanted to win."

Despite beating Juventus twice over the campaign, the Italian press still maintains that Zaccheroni will be fired in the summer. "Today I am the Inter Coach and this is the job that I perform. I don't know about tomorrow, but I can tell you that I never let myself become affected by talk from outside the club."

Marcello Lippi held up his hands and admitted that Inter deserved to win this Derby d'Italia.

"Apart from the result, the moment that really knocked the team for six was the penalty just before half-time," explained Lippi. "Then we conceded another at the start of the second half and Montero's red card all one after the other."

The Bianconeri began the match with a 3-5-2 formation, but switched it in the second half.

"We had started with three defenders because I feared Martins in a one against one situation," he revealed. "Paradoxically, we conceded a goal like that almost immediately. I changed to a 4-4-2 and matters improved considerably."

Paolo Montero was sent off for the 16th time in his Serie A career - more than anyone else in the history of Italian football.

"I thought the red card was a little harsh as the ball was already going out for a throw-in in midfield," insisted the tactician, "but if Collina took this decision then he must have had his reasons."

Juventus were also upset at the penalty awarded for Gianluca Zambrotta's challenge on Dejan Stankovic. "There is a foul and there is contact, but without wishing to cause controversy I will say that Stankovic was looking for the foul."

Monday 05 April

Inter 3 - 2 Juventus

Alberto Zaccheroni has beaten Juventus for the second time this season as Inter win the fiery Derby d'Italia. The Derby d'Italia was not a top of the table clash this year, but it was just as crucial for the two teams aiming for second place and fourth respectively.

There were major injury worries for both sides with Pavel Nedved, Francesco Toldo, Alessandro Del Piero, Alvaro Recoba and Lilian Thuram out of action. Inter welcomed back Marco Materazzi from his two-month ban for punching Siena's Bruno Cirillo and chose to start Obafemi Martins instead of Adriano.

This was the fourth meeting between the two teams this season after Inter's 3-1 win in Turin and two 2-2 draws in the Coppa Italia semi-finals.

Inter had not won this tie since 1998, but took the lead after just six minutes. Dejan Stankovic cut across for Obafemi Martins and the pacey Nigerian lifted the ball over a helpless Gianluigi Buffon. The home side dominated the early play and were very aggressive to keep Juventus under constant pressure.

However, the Bianconeri broke away on the counter-attack and Mauro German Camoranesi's cross was accidentally nodded into his own net by Kily Gonzalez. Moments later the Argentine almost repeated the feat with another deflected centre, although he should probably have cut back for the unmarked Fabrizio Miccoli.

Martins burst into the box only for his second touch to let him down at the crucial moment, then at the other end Miccoli just failed to slide on to another sweeping Camoranesi cross. On the resulting corner kick Miccoli attempted to score directly from the flag and Alberto Fontana punched it out with some difficulty.

There were penalty appeals just before the break when Stankovic fell under a challenge from Gianluca Zambrotta. At first Pierluigi Collina did not give it as Stankovic appeared to be playing for the foul, but after consulting with the linesman he did point to the spot. Christian Vieri slammed a powerful penalty through the centre to restore Inter's lead.

Juventus had to make changes and it was no surprise when the on-form Enzo Maresca replaced Stephen Appiah.

But within two minutes it was Inter that extended their lead with another soft goal. Francisco Farinos whipped in a corner kick and Stankovic was ready at the far post to tap in. The Bianconeri fought back and Fontana did well to turn Zambrotta's effort over the bar, even if there was a very late offside flag.

Alberto Zaccheroni also made a substitution, bringing Matias Almeyda back after a long injury lay-off. Miccoli was easily Juve's most dangerous player and his powerful drive from over 20 metres skimmed the crossbar. However, he was replaced by Marco Di Vaio just moments later.

Juve's hopes of getting back into this game were dashed on the hour mark when Paolo Montero, who had already been booked, sliced down Martins in midfield. The Uruguayan has now extended his record as the most red-carded man in Serie A history.

Soon after Buffon palmed away Vieri's half-volley, but when Materazzi took on the loose ball he was standing in an offside position. Martins could perhaps have completed his brace when charging into space, but fired over the bar, then substitute Giorgios Karagounis had his effort fingertipped off target.

Deep into stoppage time Juventus made the scoreline a little less humiliating when Marco Di Vaio rose to nod in an Alessandro Birindelli free kick.

Vieri: I've never said I'd leave Inter Milan

Tribal Football

Speaking after last night's victory over Juventus, Inter Milan striker Christian Vieri insists he is not angling for a move away at the end of the season.

Vieri has been linked with AC Milan, Roma and Juventus, but says: "Every day these things are said. I have a contract that expires in 2006.

"At the year's end I will speak with the president and then I will see. I am very happy. I have never said that I want to leave. I do not say anything when these reports come out.

"I have never thought about leaving."

Lazio battling to keep Fiore from Juventus, Inter Milan

Tribal Football

Lazio are struggling to ward off interest in their midfielder Stefano Fiore.

The Italian international is wanted by both Juventus and Inter Milan and Lazio chiefs know their financial situation means they cannot refuse any decent offer.

Inter's board are preparing a £6 million offer for Fiore at the end of the season.

Barcelona must keep Kluivert - Motta

Tribal Football

Barcelona midfielder Thiago Motta has urged the board to hold onto striker Patrick Kluivert for next season.

"He is an excellent forward with many qualities and few weaknesses," said the young Brazilian. "It would be a mistake to let him leave."

Motta has, himself, been linked with a move away, but added, "I want to stay with Barca. All contract talks have stopped, but this is normal. I know there are reports about me leaving, but my intention is to stay."

Ajax's Van der Vaart prefers Barcelona over Man Utd

Tribal Football

Ajax star Rafael van der Vaart says he would prefer to join Barcelona over Manchester United.

The Dutch midfielder is being chased by both European giants, but told the Mirror: "I have made no secret of the feeling I have for Barca.

"They are the club I have supported all of my life for family reasons. They are the club of my mother's family.

"I do not know what the future holds, but I have played in Camp Nou for Ajax and it was a dream come true for me."

Juve table new Trez contract

Juventus have reportedly tabled another deal for David Trezeguet to remain at the club - despite the striker's assertion that he is not ready to discuss his future.

Trezeguet recently insisted that he wanted to see how Juve's disappointing season panned out before he committed his long-term future to the club. The Turin club have suffered an ignominious exit from European competition, and Milan have established a commanding lead in Serie A.

Trezeguet has been strongly linked with a number of top European clubs - including Chelsea and Barcelona.

Although Chelsea have a wealth of top class strikers, supremo Roman Abramovich has signalled his desire to bring the cream of the world's footballers to Stamford Bridge. Barcelona are also keen to build on an encouraging second half to the season and view French marksman Trezeguet as a player who can bring quality to Camp Nou.

Mindful of this, Juventus have been desperate to tie the Frenchman to a new deal, and are believed to have offered a lucrative new contract if Trezeguet commits to the club beyond his current deal - which expires in the summer of 2005.

Udinese find new Pizarro

Udinese transfer guru PierPaolo Marino has confirmed that a new Argentine starlet is the replacement for Juventus-bound David Pizarro.

"Leandro Romagnoli is a player that is certainly of interest to us," revealed the director general. "We are only waiting for the right moment to complete the deal, and that will be when we sell Pizarro."

The 23-year-old creative midfielder is already a hero with his club San Lorenzo and is set to be the latest in a long line of South American starlets discovered by Udinese's network of talent scouts. Pizarro was far from a household name when he was snapped up by the Friuli outfit in 1999, but fine performances in Serie A have earned him interest from the likes of Inter and Real Madrid.

The Chilean was frozen out of the squad in December for refusing to extend his contract, but even after putting pen to paper made it clear he would be moving on at the end of this season.

"I have much to thank Udinese for," he revealed in a recent interview, "but I feel ready for a big club. I know of Juve's interest in me and it would be the ideal step."

Inter - Juventus Preview

The Derby d'Italia is here and arrives just when the two teams have climbed back on to their feet after a disappointing spell. Who will be left standing on Sunday night?

This has always been a fiery and controversial clash, but we have already seen a taster in the Coppa Italia semi-final this season. Both legs ended with a 2-2 scoreline, but the San Siro decider was packed with controversial refereeing decisions and a penalty shoot-out in which Christian Vieri's error gave Juventus their ticket to the Final.

The Nerazzurri have already humiliated their rivals in Turin with a 3-1 Serie A victory, one of Alberto Zaccheroni's first matches in charge. That was one of six consecutive wins for the Coach, but his fortunes took a downward turn over the last month and the team now lies in sixth place.

The return to full fitness and form of Alvaro Recoba has been crucial in earning two straight victories over Ancona and Reggina, plus a 4-3 UEFA Cup thriller with Benfica, but they will certainly need to improve on those performances to get the better of Juventus.

The injury crisis continues with Cristiano Zanetti, Matias Almeyda and Giorgios Karagounis all in doubt, but Marco Materazzi returns to shore up the defence after two months out with a ban for punching Siena's Bruno Cirillo in an off the field incident. Adriano scored three of the four goals in that Coppa Italia clash with Juve, so Zac will be hard pushed to leave him out.

Juve's injury crisis is also not to be sneered at with Alessandro Del Piero, Antonio Chimenti, Ciro Ferrara and Nicola Legrottaglie all out, while Gianluca Zambrotta, David Trezeguet and Alessandro Birindelli are still trying to find full fitness.

Enzo Maresca has been a decisive figure in the Bianconeri midfield this season and it is no coincidence that their return to victory matched his comeback from a back problem. Sunday's 3-1 win over Modena may not have been entirely convincing, but it boosted morale and still put them in second place above Roma. Marco Di Vaio scored two in the Coppa encounters and is again expected to partner Trezeguet.

Nedved misses Inter clash

Pavel Nedved and Lilian Thuram are officially ruled out of Sunday's Derby d'Italia, as Juve experiment with an attacking line-up.

The Czech international has been struggling with fitness problems throughout the campaign, but was unable to recover from back pain in time for this weekend. Thuram has also been finding it difficult to find his form due to a series of physical worries and is out with a thigh problem.

The good news for Coach Marcello Lippi is that Paolo Montero, Mark Iuliano and Nicola Legrottaglie all return from injury to shore up the defence. The Bianconeri have called a total of 18 players, including two youth team players, for this historically tense encounter.

It is reported that Lippi will test out a new system in the absence of Alessandro Del Piero and Nedved. He aims to launch an all-out attack on Inter with Italy's midweek hero Fabrizio Miccoli, Mauro Camoranesi and Enzo Maresca supporting lone striker David Trezeguet.

Marco Di Vaio is another option, as he has now recovered from an infection that ruled him out of Wednesday's 2-1 win in Portugal.

Injury boost for Thuram

Planet Football

Juventus defender Lilian Thuram has received a boost after discovering his groin injury is not serious.

Thuram damaged the muscle on international duty with France in the midweek draw against Holland and feared he may have pulled his groin. If the worst case scenario had been confirmed, Thuram would have been facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

But after undergoing an ultra-sound scan on the complaint, Thuram has been lifted by the tests showing he has only suffered cramp.

The full back trained with his Juventus team-mates on Friday and was able to do some light jogging. Thuram is unlikely to be risked for his club's tussle with Internazionale this Sunday but should be back in action next weekend.

Lippi: Sparks will fly

The Scudetto may not be in the balance, but Marcello Lippi maintains Inter-Juventus will be one of the most heated games of the season.

"This isn't the usual top of the table battle it has been throughout recent years," confirmed the Coach, "but let us not forget these are the only two clubs never to have been relegated and it remains a very heated encounter."

The Bianconeri are now resigned to losing the title, while the home side is locked in a race to grab that fourth Champions' League spot.

"Both us and Inter are coming off a difficult period and want to earn a convincing victory to get back on track. It's a classic Serie A fixture and as we lost 3-1 in Turin last time we are even more motivated."

Lippi certainly wasn't underestimating the fire that usually surrounds this tie. This season alone we have already seen controversy, bitter recrimination and twelve goals in three games between Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

The sparks are already flying after Cristiano Zanetti suggested Juventus were "moaning" about their many injuries while Inter suffered in silence throughout their own fitness crisis. "Zanetti should get his facts straight," snapped Lippi, "as we lost nine players during a very important part of the season."

Paolo Montero, Mark Iuliano and Nicola Legrottaglie are back, but Juve lose Pavel Nedved and Lilian Thuram for this crunch match.

"I saw Fabrizio Miccoli doing very well for the Italy squad midweek," he noted after the 2-1 win in Portugal. "I wish to remind everyone that he hasn't played much at club level recently because we advised him to rest up and recover fully from his injury."

The former Perugia starlet is set to act as support to David Trezeguet on Sunday night, lining up alongside Enzo Maresca and Mauro Camoranesi. "Miccoli is not to be considered the understudy to Nedved," added the tactician, "as nobody can substitute Pavel."

The club has denied reports of a revolution within the squad next season and Lippi insists this campaign has not been a failure. "If we take second place off Roma," he pointed out, "then in my seven complete years at Juventus I will have earned five Scudetto titles and finished runner-up twice."

Old Lady sticks with Old Guard

Juventus have officially renewed the contracts of Alessandro Birindelli and Alessio Tacchinardi, but doubt remains over David Trezeguet.

"The future era of Juventus is these players," announced director general Luciano Moggi after the new deals were signed. "This club knows how to stand the test of time and that is by keeping a solid centre of the squad throughout the years."

There were already hints that pen would be put to paper, but Birindelli has now officially tied himself to the side until 2007 while Tacchinardi will stay in Turin until 2008. Over the last few weeks Gianluca Zambrotta has also renewed his current contract until 2008, but doubt remains over Trezeguet's future.

Newspapers in Spain and Italy continue to insist that the hitman will join Barcelona in the summer.

'Marca' claims that a verbal agreement between the two clubs has already been finalised for £18.5m, while the Frenchman is ready to sign a three-year deal with an option for a fourth worth £1.7m per season.

"I can assure you all," added Moggi in his press conference, "that Juventus have every intention of making Trezeguet happy in these contract negotiations."

Time is running out for the former Monaco man, as his current deal expires in 2005 and therefore failure to sign a new agreement would inevitably see him move on in the summer.

Davids' agent: 50-50 between Barcelona, AC Milan

Tribal Football

The agent of Juventus midfielder Edgar Davids says he will choose between AC Milan and Barcelona over where he will play next season. "Davids is between Barcelona and Milan," said Robert Geerlings. "They have both a 50% possibility of signing him."

Milan have already offered a £2.4 million-a-season deal over three years to Davids, while Barca are still locked in talks with the Holland international.

Montero unlikely to stay at Juventus

Tribal Football

Juventus chief Luciano Moggi has hinted this could Paolo Montero's last season with the club.

The Uruguay international is off contract in the summer and Moggi said: "There are players, as an example Montero, that for age and their contract they will stay with us until the end of their agreement (June 2004), then there will be the time in order to consider the situation."

He added, "We have great confidence in this squad and those players we have not re-signed, does not mean we will be selling to other clubs."

Meanwhile, Alessandro Birindelli has penned a new deal at Juve to 2007.

Mexes set for Roma?

Roma are today being linked with a summer swoop for Auxerre youngster Philippe Mexes.

The 22-year-old is believed to be on the club's shortlist should they lose Walter Samuel at the end of the season. The central defender could be on his way out of the capital and Mexes is a contender to replace the Argentine next term.

The French international is a promising young stopper that has attracted the interest of Europe's top clubs in recent times. The likes of Man Utd are reportedly keen, even if Juventus have been eyeing him in the past few weeks.

The Giallorossi are also looking for a possible replacement for Emerson who is set to be sacrificed. Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Aldo Pedro Duscher, 25, could be drafted in if the Brazilian is sold.

Juve block Miccoli sale

Juventus have rubbished reports that Fabrizio Miccoli could be on his way out of the club this summer. The pint-sized striker hasn't featured too regularly this term which has fuelled speculation of a departure.

But transfer guru Luciano Moggi is keen to keep hold of Miccoli, especially after his performance for Italy on Wednesday. "You can all stay calm because Miccoli is remaining with us," said the director general. "It is only normal that he has had difficulties in his first year in Turin.

"But we are not about to let go of him just when he has also started to do very well for the national side."

The Lecce-born forward was actually signed two years ago from Serie B side Ternana before immediately being loaned out to Perugia. He exploded onto the Italian scene last term and the Old Lady decided to recall him for the new campaign.

However, competition for places in Turin is tough considering that David Trezeguet, Alex Del Piero and Marco Di Vaio are his teammates.

"I think I will be staying," admitted Miccoli. "Moggi has told me so and to be honest that is all that counts."

Miccoli, who scored against Portugal in the 2-1 win, is also looking to impress against Inter on Sunday. "I hope to play," he added. "Even if my ankle is causing me pain."

Juve keen to keep Miccoli

Juventus have moved to reassure Fabrizio Miccoli that he is part of their plans and will remain at the club next season.

The Italian international, who scored the winner in the friendly with Portugal, was fearing he could be shipped out of Juve in the summer.

Miccoli has failed to hold down a regular place in the side and with speculation regarding his future the diminutive striker was concerned about his future.

"It's more than a month I read these things without anyone wanting to meet me to clear up my future," said Miccoli.

"This story of the loan bothered me. I think I have still tried to help Juve when I had the opportunity. Now the moment has arrived what the club really thinks of me.

"It is not an ultimatum. Only a legitimate request to have things cleared up.

"Surely the loan doesn't seem to me the ideal solution. I know to have not been equal to the task of my last few seasons, but I have many extenuating circumstances.

"Arriving at a club like Juve is a big jump, for everyone. For me it hasn't been simple, because Juve are a different reality.

"You must be still at the top to give your best. I've had a lot of physical troubles that haven't allowed me to give my best."

Juve general manger Luciano Moggi has eased Miccoli fears by revealing Juve are determined to keep hold of the skilful forward.

"You can all stay calm because Miccoli is remaining with us," said Moggi."It is only normal that he has had difficulties in his first year in Turin.

"But we are not about to let go of him just when he has also started to do very well for the national side."

Meanwhile, Juve defender Alessandro Birindelli has extended his contract at the club until 2007.

The versatile performer was set to be out of contract in the summer, but the club have moved to tie him down to a new long-term deal following the likes of Alessio Tacchinardi, Ciro Ferrara and Gianluca Zambrotta.

Tacchi not expecting Trap call

Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi has admitted defeat in his attempt to be a part of Euro 2004. The 28-year-old has been involved in the squad over the last few seasons but he doesn't seem to figure in Giovanni Trapattoni's present plans.

"It looks as if Trapattoni has other ideas in his head," he stated after he was not included in Wednesday's 2-1 win in Portugal. "For now though I'm just concentrating on ending the season in the best possible manner with Juventus.

"If a national call up does arrive then I will obviously be happy but Juventus come first right now."

Trap's central midfield options currently include Simone Perrotta, Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso and Cristiano Zanetti. The latter did pull out of the Braga clash with an injury but Trap decided to replace him with Milan's Massimo Ambrosini and not with the former Atalanta player.

Real snub Samuel option

Real Madrid insist they have no interest in signing Roma stopper Walter Samuel for the new campaign.

"We won't be buying a central defender," President Florentino Perez is quoted as saying. "We want to keep faith with our recent history.

"We want to bring through players from our youth team to play alongside our champions. That's why we won't buy a defender."

Samuel's future has been cast in doubt after he admitted recently that he is tired of winning nothing in the capital. That has seen him linked with a summer switch to Real, but Juventus, Inter and Chelsea have also been associated.

However, some whispers in Spain insist that Real won't sign the Argentine because of Roma's asking price. It is alleged that the Spanish giants made an initial enquiry last summer but they would not meet the Giallorossi's valuation.

It is believed that the capital club would like at least £15m for the former Boca Juniors star, who could be sacrificed this summer along with Emerson.

Thuram's injury worry

Planet Football

France international Lilian Thuram has revealed he sustained an injury during his country's goalless draw with Holland on Wednesday.

The Juventus defender felt a twinge during an aerial challenge before being replaced by William Gallas after 67 minutes.

Thuram is hoping the knock is not serious as an ankle injury over Christmas has already kept him on the sidelines this season.

"After a challenge in the air I felt pain," said Thuram to L'Equipe. "I could not run anymore.

"If I've pulled a muscle, it could be a long worry.

"Also, I've already been injured this season."
