Tacchinardi nets new deal

Alessio Tacchinardi has become the latest Juventus player to sign a new contract at the Delle Alpi. The midfielder put pen to paper on a deal this morning that will keep him with the club until 2008.

"I would stay here until the age of 50 in an effort to win the Champions' League again," he stated. "That is my primary objective and the desire of the fans for this club."

The international, now 28, has been in Turin since his 1994 move from Atalanta and has proved to be a loyal servant. Tacchinardi, whose deal was set to expire in 2005, follows in the footsteps of Gianluca Zambrotta who renewed his deal last week.

The club are also in negotiations with a number of other players whose contracts are nearing their end.

Enzo Maresca held initial talks this week and an agreement is set to be reached soon. He should sign after Easter. Marco Di Vaio also revealed recently that he could extend his stay despite his current deal still having three years left to run.

There is also the David Trezeguet situation to be resolved. His agreement concludes next year which has led to reports that he could be sold to Barcelona. Yet transfer guru Luciano Moggi has again insisted today that the Frenchman will remain where he is.

"He wants to stay and we have great faith in him here," said the official.

Thuram unhappy with form

Lilian Thuram has conceded that he has contributed to Juventus' poor defensive displays this term. The Bianconeri rearguard has been heavily criticised and the Frenchman has taken some of the responsibility.

"I'm not having a good season," the stopper told L'Equipe. "In fact, it is probably my worst as a professional. I know that I am not doing what I can on the pitch. I'm just not in the physical shape that I should be."

Thuram did pick up an ankle injury just before Christmas and his performances have been rather erratic since. That has led to claims that the 32-year-old could be sold in the summer but he says he will see out his contract in Turin.

"I still have two more years left on my deal," he added. "If I feel fine physically after that time then I will play on. I'm not afraid to hit the 35-year-old barrier. If I am training well and I don't have any fitness problems then I would like to continue playing."

Thuram, who added that he wants to play as a centre back in the future, had previously stated that he was to retire from the game in 2006.

Baggio inspired Miccoli goal

Fabrizio Miccoli insists that his first international goal, scored against Portugal last night, was no fluke. The Juventus star netted directly from a corner kick to give the Azzurri a very respectable 2-1 win at Braga.

"I was looking to score," he maintains. "I learnt it from Roberto Baggio who once scored past Lecce like that a few years ago. I'm absolutely delighted to have got on the scoresheet and I'm finding it hard to describe exactly what I am feeling."

Miccoli, who impressed after coming on as a second half substitute, also used the strike to hit back at his critics. "I dedicate this goal to my daughter but also to those people who have been writing that I will leave Juventus this summer," he added.

The other Italian scorer was Christian Vieri, who has now joined his close friend Pippo Inzaghi on 21 goals for his country.

"I'm expecting a call from him soon," smiled Bobo. "It was an important goal because it came at a crucial time. Overall the victory will do us good because it will put us in a good frame of mind at Euro 2004."

One of the biggest disappointments of the evening was the display of Francesco Totti who didn't impress like he usually does. "I'm more interested in the performance of the side rather than mine," he added. "It has been a good day for me though because Roma are safe from their debts."

Barcelona concerns over Juventus star Trez

Tribal Football

Juventus striker David Trezeguet's proposed move to Barcelona could stall over a long-standing back complaint. The French international wants to go under the knife after the European Championships, which is also the time when Barca want to conclude negotiations over his transfer.

Trezeguet's wish is to sign for Barca before Euro2004 and then have his back operation while settling in at the Nou Camp. But Barca are unhappy with this option and would prefer to sign Trezeguet when he is 100 per cent fit.

The Spanish giants are prepared to offer Juve £15 million cash, plus a player rated at £10 million from a choice of Gabri, Thiago Motta and Patrick Kluivert.

Juventus chief won't give up Vieri chase

Tribal Football

Juventus sports director Luciano Moggi is refusing to give up on prising Christian Vieri away from Inter Milan.

Moggi knows Vieri is unsettled at Inter, having been targeted by the club's boo-boys this season and also not enjoying a good relationship with both coach Alberto Zaccheroni and director Massimo Moratti.

A former Juve star, Vieri is believed to be interested in a return to Turin and Moggi has been in contact with Inter again this week about a possible end-of-season transfer. It's been suggested Moratti would be happy to see a deal go through if Moggi included striker Marco Di Vaio in a swap agreement.

£15M Samuel ready for Chelsea move

Tribal Football

Chelsea are ready to win the race for AS Roma defender Walter Samuel. The Mirror says Chelsea will splash £15 million on the Argentina international in the summer, who will arrive as a replacement for club captain Marcel Desailly.

Samuel said: "I would like to play in London. I've spent four seasons in Rome and have already been a champion here. Now I would like to look for a new horizon."

Fiore flattered by Juve link

Planet Football

Lazio star Stefano Fiore has told skysports.com that he is flattered by interest from Juventus, but he will only consider any incoming offers at the end of the Serie A season. The Italy international has been linked with a move to Turin as his current club might be forced to sell their best players in order to ease their financial problems.

"I am flattered to read that such a big club has an interest in me," Fiore told skysports.com. "But it's really too soon to talk about a possible move in the summer.

"I love Lazio and I have full respect for their hard work at the club and squad level. It would be unfair to talk about other clubs now."

Fiore has expressed his satisfaction for his new role in the Azzurri side after coach Giovanni Trapattoni took inspiration from Milan's attacking style and selected Fiore, Andrea Pirlo and Francesco Totti.

"It's always nice to be part of the national team," he added. "So I have no problem in playing in any position. As long as I wear the Azzurri shirt, I am happy."

The midfielder believes Italy have a great chance of winning Euro 2004 following the victory over host nation Portugal in Braga. After being part of the side that lost to France in 2000, the Calabria-born player is determined to go one better this time around.

"We are all very determined to strive for a great achievement," he vowed. "Four years ago, we performed at a very high level but we saw the dream crash in the very last seconds of the match.

"We hope we can take revenge this summer."

Portugal 1 Italy 2

Portugal's Nuno Valente celebrates his goal Italy's Christian Vieri celebrates his goal

Fabrizio Miccoli curled in direct from the corner flag to earn Italy a morale-boosting victory in Portugal.

Giovanni Trapattoni fielded an experimental line-up that adopted Milan's 4-3-1-2 system with Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso and Lazio's Stefano Fiore in midfield. Francesco Totti acted as support for Christian Vieri and Carlo Nervo. The Bologna winger was drafted in a few hours before kick-off as first choice Marco Di Vaio pulled out with an infection.

These two teams last met in Genoa in Feb 2003 and Italy won 1-0 thanks to Bernardo Corradi's goal. Portugal have not beaten the Azzurri here in 27 years, since a 2-1 friendly result in Dec 1976. It was also a special occasion, as the Azzurri unveiled the new team strip designed by Englishman Neil Barrett.

Gianluigi Buffon was handed the captain's armband on his 44th international appearance.

Italy had the first real scoring opportunity after three minutes when Nervo ran on to Fiore's through ball and forced Ricardo Pereira to rush off his line and clear.

However, moments later it was Portugal who scored with the aid of a Milan star. Manuel Rui Costa's backheel completed the triangle with Nuno Valente and the defence left him unmarked to pierce Buffon's net at the near post.

This was the first goal that Portugal have scored against Italy since 1993 and Nuno Valente's first international strike. Soon after Pauleta's long-range effort was deflected wide, then the lone striker fired wide after a defensive error from the reshuffled Azzurri back line.

The home side had a very confident start to the game and after that goal began to dominate possession. Andrea Pirlo's curling effort was between a cross and a shot.

Following an initial 15-minute spell of Portuguese pressure, Italy began to increase their influence and Nuno Valente dived in front of Totti to deflect his fierce drive just over the crossbar. On the resulting corner Christian Panucci and Giuseppe Pancaro were unable to make the most of some chaotic defending.

However, the Azzurri were left exposed to the counter-attack and Pauleta was ready to double Portugal's lead, but Panucci just managed to toe-poke the ball off his foot in a perfectly-timed intervention.

It became a more open game and Fiore hesitated too much to make the most of Gattuso's precise long pass, cutting back for Totti to drive it wide.

Trap's men were more dangerous and drew level just before the break. Totti took a free kick quickly and Christian Vieri rose to nod in, although there were Portuguese protests at an alleged push on Paulo Ferreira. It was Vieri's 21st international strike.

As expected, Trapattoni made several changes during the half-time break and introduced Fabrizio Miccoli, Massimo Ambrosini, Simone Perrotta and Giuseppe Favalli. Portugal also threw on Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco and Boa Morte.

There were some familiar faces all round and a scuffle broke out between Vieri and Fernando Couto as the Lazio defender was struck in the face by an outstretched hand.

The row continued several minutes later and both were booked for their off the ball battle. This incident rushed Trapattoni's decision to replace the Inter striker with Bernardo Corradi, while Massimo Oddo stepped in for Panucci, but Vieri walked straight past the bench and into the changing rooms.

Buffon tipped a deflected Luis Figo cross over the bar, then blocked a dangerous Deco free kick that bounced perilously in front of him.

Mauro German Camoranesi replaced Fiore in midfield as Italy returned to the old 4-2-3-1 system used during the latter period of qualifying. The Argentine-born star ran into the box but fell under Boa Morte's mis-timed challenge, although the referee waved away penalty appeals.

Some wonderful approach play put Corradi in a great scoring position, but he was just offside. Moments later Miccoli burst into the box after skipping past a challenge and drawing out the 'keeper, but a goalline clearance prevented Corradi turning into an empty net.

On the resulting corner Italy took the lead as Miccoli's swerving set-piece took everyone by surprise at the near post. Boa Morte's attempted clearance perhaps confused the goalkeeper in a bizarre goal.

The pitch was increasingly fast from the driving rain and Miccoli again rushed down the flank, but his cross was fingertipped just past the unmarked Simone Perrotta. A clearly shaken Portugal fought back, but Buffon tipped a tight cross just far enough to miss the striker at the back post.

Boosted by his previous effort, Miccoli again attempted to curl the ball in directly from the corner flag, but this time a defender was able to clear off the line.

Buffon was again tested to palm out a fierce Beto drive from distance that bounced on the soaking wet surface. In stoppage time Nuno Gomes was ready to turn in before Matteo Ferrari's sliding tackle saved the result.

Di Vaio drops out

Marco Di Vaio has been ruled out of tonight's international friendly due to an infection, so Carlo Nervo will now start.

The Juventus striker was set to partner Christian Vieri upfront in a new 4-3-1-2 system, adapted from Milan's successful tactics, to take on Portugal. However, Di Vaio has been ordered to rest as a precautionary measure after developing an infection of the urinary tract.

Coach Giovanni Trapattoni has confirmed that Bologna winger Carlo Nervo will now be used to support Vieri. This would suggest that Trap was originally going to field Di Vaio in a wide role rather than as part of a traditional strike partnership.

"This will be the opportunity to verify the progress of those men who played with great character in recent matches," explained Trapattoni of tonight's trip to Portugal. "We know our opponents well and many of them play in Serie A, while others like Luis Figo are present at the highest levels. I think Portugal are among the favourites to win 2004."

The host nation has never won an international tournament, but with the arrival of World Cup winning Brazil boss Luiz Felipe Scolari they hope to earn a morale-boosting victory against the Azzurri.

Juventus block Trez sale

David Trezeguet will not join Barcelona in the summer says Juventus transfer guru Luciano Moggi. Reports in Spain insists that a £20m fee has already been agreed but the Bianconeri official maintains that is not true.

"There has been no contact with the Catalan club and therefore no negotiations are taking place," he told Radio Barcelona. "It is highly possible that Barca are interested in the player but there is an abyss between that and a sale.

"A lot of clubs are keen on Trezeguet but I can guarantee that we will not be selling him. He will remain with Juventus."

There are doubts over the French international's future in Turin given his current contract situation. He is only tied to the Delle Alpi outfit until 2005 and no agreement has yet been reached over an extension. That means the Old Lady must offer him a new deal before the start of next term or they run the risk of losing him for nothing next year.

Meanwhile, contract talks are continuing between the club and young midfielder Enzo Maresca. His present deal also expires in 2005 but reports claim that an agreement should be reached, possibly after Easter.

Barcelona chief: Juventus striker Trezeguet is very interesting

Tribal Football

Barcelona sports director Tkixi Begiristain has confirmed their interest in Juventus star David Trezeguet. "He is a very interesting player," admitted Begiristain yesterday, "who has been a world champion.

"But Barcelona still don't know if Juventus wish to sell him and if so, for what price. Sometimes these things can become very complicated. In addition, there are also always alternatives."

He added, "Our list of players we're hoping to sign has all but been finalised."

Davids to make April decision

Tribal Football

Edgar Davids will make a decision on his future during April, with Barcelona still in pole position to sign the Dutch international. The tough-tackling midfielder is currently on loan at Barcelona from Juventus, with his contract in Turin expiring in the summer.

He has impressed during his stint at Camp Nou and Barca coach Frank Rijkaard is desperate to keep Davids permanently. But former club Milan have expressed an interest in taking Davids back to San Siro although Rossoneri president Silvio Berlusconi concedes Barcelona are favourites.

Davids's agent Robert Geerlings admits Barca have first option on the midfield powerhouse, with a firm commitment regarding his future expected within the next month.

"Edgar is feeling really good at Barcelona," Geerlings told Gazzetta dello Sport. "His performances have come under everyone's gaze but I must confirm that Edgar is attracted by everything in Barcelona.

"The consequence is that he's giving the priority to Barcelona regarding his new contract. They haven't made him an offer yet but we know they want to do everything they can to keep him and we have a duty to wait for them.

"I think Edgar will make a decision in April."

Geerlings also revealed there has been interest from The Premiership and acknowledged Milan are also an attractive option for Davids. He continued: "He has been looked at by many European clubs - in Italy but especially in England.

"But Milan are Milan. President Berlusconi's interest has a big significance but especially because Edgar is considering the possibility of working again with a coach like Carlo Ancelotti, with whom he had a good relationship at Juventus."

Thuram concedes below-par campaign

Planet Football

Juventus' French international defender Lilian Thuram has conceded he is having one of the worst campaigns in his footballing career with the Italian giants. Juve are Milan's closest rivals in the chase for this season's Scudetto, although the Turin giants were sent packing by Deportivo La Coruna in this season's UEFA Champions League.

Thuram was forced to miss a number of fixtures in December in order to rest an ankle injury and now he has conceded his is currently not in condition to perform to his potential.

"I am not having a good season," admitted Thuram in L'Equipe. "It is probably my worst season since I started playing football! I know I'm not doing what I can on the pitch. Physically I'm not as good as I should be."

Meanwhile, the experienced stopper has gone against remarks made in January by stating he may play on after his Juve contract expires in 2006. The Frenchman has said he may decide to hang up his playing boots before his 35th birthday, but now he wants to carry on for club and country.

"I still have two years remaining on my contract with Juventus, and I can't see myself at a club and not with the French team anymore," he added. "So yes I would like to continue, today is all I am thinking about. I am not too old. If I am training well and I don't have physical trouble, everything is fine.

"After my contract at Juventus, if I am fine physically, I will play on. I am not afraid by the 35-year-old barrier, but this time I can play in the centre, not as a right back."

Ferrari gears up for exit

Parma captain Matteo Ferrari has put himself on the transfer market given the uncertain future of the club.

The Gialloblu are looking for a new owner after major backers Parmalat pulled out earlier this season, following their financial collapse. That has led to reports that a host of the outfit's best players are to be sold and Ferrari is hoping to be one of them.

"It's getting tough at Parma," said the 25-year-old, who should play against Portugal this evening. "We are going through some very difficult times and we don't even know for sure whether the club will survive.

"Given the situation, I would be happy if another club comes forward to sign me."

Ferrari was heavily linked with a January move to Juventus but no agreement could be reached between the two sides. The Bianconeri are set to renew their interest at the end of the season but they do have a number of other defensive options.

Another player that is definitely set to leave Parma is goalkeeper Sebastien Frey. "At this moment in time a move to Arsenal is most likely," revealed his agent Vincenzo Morabito. There have been reports that Inter may also be interested but Morabito claimed that the player would probably leave Italy.

Chelsea offering cash, players for Atletico Madrid's Torres

Tribal Football

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is preparing to make a major offer for Atletico Madrid whiz-kid Fernando Torres.

Its reported that the Russian oil tycoon is prepared to put down £22 million plus the choice of two Chelsea players in exchange for the Spanish international striker. The two Blues stars that are in line to move to Atletico are former Madrid star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and ex-Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele.

Atletico insist Torres is not for sale and have already rejected a similar offer from Manchester United for the youngster. But the quality of Chelsea's bid is sure to be considered by the club's board.

Caliendo: Trezeguet Hasn't Signed For Juve

Soccerage

Antonio Caliendo, the French striker's former agent is convinced that Trezeguet's future isn't with Juventus.

"I can't say anything for sure but it's certain that he hasn't signed for Juventus," he said. "I think that David is behaving as a professional and he will announce his decision in June and I think that he will play for Barcelona next year".

Juve set to offer Di Vaio new deal

Planet Football

Juventus have dismissed rumours they are looking to sell striker Marco Di Vaio, saying they want him to stay and sign a new deal.

The Italian international's name has been touted with a move away from Stadio Delle Alpi, but it is quite likely the former Parma man will ink a contract extension in the next few days. The new deal will keep Di Vaio with the Bianconeri until 2009 as talks were confirmed by the player who is away with the Azzurri preparing for this week's friendly against Portugal.

"The fact that officials speak to me about such a delicate matter I think speaks volumes. It's a good signal," affirmed Di Vaio. "I've showed myself to be an important player for Juve and I'm happy with how my season has gone.

"Personally, I feel gratified."

Di Vaio has bagged an impressive 14 goals for The Old Lady this term and says that the reason for Juve tailing off in recent weeks is due to injuries and problems within the squad.

"In the second period, there has been some squad problems and problems with injuries," he added. "Unfortunately, we have fallen short in our aims but we are all responsible for that."

Agent reveals Inter Milan, Juventus chasing Roma's Dacourt

Tribal Football

The agent of AS Roma midfielder Ollie Dacourt has revealed Inter Milan and Juventus are chasing the French international.

The ex-Leeds star is concerned with Roma's cash problems and his agent said, "If Roma cannot guarantee a future for Dacourt from the technical and economic point of view, then my client needs to be informed.

"Inter and Juve are following him very closely. The champions of Italy, in particular, have made themselves known to us that they are interested in talks."

Barcelona to agree Trezeguet deal tomorrow

Yahoo! Sport Italia

The transfer for David Trezeguet could be agreed today. Barcelona's president Joan Laporta has cancelled travel plans to Paraguay so as to meet Bianconeri officials who left for Barcelona. They will meet for negotiations for the French striker.

A principle agreement already agreed when Laporta and Juvetus chief Roberto Bettega met during the G-14's last meeting. The agreed price is about €15 million (£10 million) and a player in exchange, possibly one of three players: Gabri, Motta and Kluivert.

Corradi's agent reveals Juve advantage

Yahoo! Sport Italia

Lazio striker Bernardo Corradi's agent has revealed that Juventus have moved in front of Milan for the Italy striker's signature. "Corradi is doing well in Rome, but wants to play in a team that has greater ambition. Although Milan have made repeated attempts, Corradi is more interested in Juve, which would be a big step in his career."

Parma to keep Gilardino

Parma boss Cesare Prandelli is confident that he will still have Alberto Gilardino at his disposal next term. The Under-21 international has been linked with a number of clubs but the Coach is confident that the striker is going nowhere.

"I think he will remain where he is," stated Prandelli. "He has great potential and I believe it will be best for him to take things slowly. He needs to take one step at a time because when you get to the top there is the possibility that you may slip."

The former Piacenza hitman has been heavily linked with Juventus. Yet he too seems to have his eyes on a Parma stay. "I want to thank Prandelli for the faith that he has shown in me this season," said the Azzurrini star. "I am more than happy at Parma. I would love to remain at this club but we'll just have to wait and see."

The Tardini outfit could be forced to sell given their financial problems after the collapse of major backers Parmalat.

Del Neri unsure of future

Chievo boss Gigi Del Neri says he still has no clear idea of where he will be next season. "For now nothing is happening," he told Radio RAI. "All the big clubs are just concentrating on ending this season at this moment in time."

Del Neri has been associated with a number of top clubs, such as Juventus and Inter, but he insists they are just rumours.

"There are always stories circulating and I'm often mentioned but then I always stay at Chievo," he added. "Juventus? I don't know because I think that Marcello Lippi could stay on and continue to do well.

"As for Inter, I would Coach any of the big clubs. Yet for now I'm happy at Verona and I have a good relationship with the club. My contract will expire in the summer but I always sign one-year deals and the club know this."

Del Neri has made a real name for himself in Italy after masterminding the Chievo Verona miracle. He led them to the top-flight for the first time in their history and actually took them to the top of Serie A for a few weeks.

Roma emerge as Mexes favourites

Planet Football

France defender Phillipe Mexes Reports in France are suggesting that Roma have pushed past Manchester United in the race to land Auxerre's brilliant young defender Philippe Mexes. Djibril Cisse, Jean-Alain Boumsong and Olivier Kapo are due to leave the Stade Abbe Deschamps in the summer and the club have already confirmed that Mexes will be allowed to join the exodus.

The 22-year-old has been a target of United, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Juventus over the last few seasons - but now Roma look to have stolen a march on their rivals. The Roman giants could be losing Jonathan Zebina and Vincent Candela in the summer and so the need for defensive reinforcements is at the foremost of their transfer thinking.

United were understood to have rekindled their interest in Mexes after watching him again in recent weeks, as they too will almost certainly add a defender to their ranks over the summer. However, it now seems that Roma are in the driving seat to secure Mexes's signature, but their interest is yet to be officially confirmed by either side.

The defender is due to play in Euro 2004 with France and is unlikely to sort out his future until after the tournament in Portugal.

Samuel eager for trophies

There are doubts over Walter Samuel's future at Roma after the stopper admitted he was tired of losing. "It's been a bad week for us," said the Argentine. "We got knocked out of the UEFA Cup and then we lost to Bologna on Sunday.

"This will be the third successive year that we will have ended the campaign without any trophies. I've been here for four years and I have to say that not winning things is starting to annoy me."

Those comments have only increased speculation that Samuel could be on his way out of the club. The international may be sold in the summer given the club's financial situation and Juventus are reportedly keen. The defender is liked by the Old Lady and Real Madrid who both have their problems at the back.

Real Madrid ponder bid for Chelsea target Samuel

Tribal Football

Real Madrid sports director Jorge Valdano is locked in talks with president Florentino Perez over a possible move for AS Roma defender Walter Samuel. The Argentina international is becoming unsettled at Roma, with the centre-half keen to join a team that is regularly challenging for trophies.

Chelsea are in the frame to sign Samuel, but Real chief Valdano is also keen.

The stumbling block is Real's policy of not spending big money on defenders. Perez and Valdano know that with Roma cash-strapped there may never be a better time to sign Samuel, but it could force a rethink over their summer transfer plans with a galactico still on the agenda.

Berlusconi excludes Davids bid

Milan chief Silvio Berlusconi has ruled out the summer capture of Barcelona star Edgar Davids. The Dutchman, who is currently on loan in Spain from Juventus, will be available on a free transfer at the end of this season.

Milan are known to be interested in bringing him back to the San Siro, after his previous spell with the club, but the Rossoneri President has excluded a bid. "I don't think it will be easy for us to take him away from Barca," he stated. "They want to keep hold of him so I can't see him leaving.

"Anyway, after three years of heavy spending we believe it is right to have a break and keep an eye on our finances. We won't be making any massive buys once the next transfer window opens. There will be just one addition in defence."

It is expected that the stopper Milan will swoop for is Lazio ace Jaap Stam. He has already hinted that he is keen on a move to the Rossoneri.

Kapo will join Juventus

Auxerre ace Olivier Kapo will have a medical in Turin today after admitting that Juventus had swooped for him. Reports earlier this month claimed that he had signed a pre-contract with the Bianconeri and he's confirmed those stories.

"I can now say that I will be a Juventus player," the attacking midfielder is quoted as saying. "Contact was made about a month ago. I was in Turin on March 9 on the eve of the game against Deportivo La Coruna. However, nothing will be concluded until I pass the medical."

The 23-year-old was a target for a host of European clubs given the fact that he will be a free agent in the summer. But the French international didn't hesitate in choosing the Old Lady. "Juve are a prestigious outfit," he added. "I'll be playing alongside stars such as Alex Del Piero, champions who will only help me in my career."

Rumours suggest that Kapo, who has scored three goals in eight internationals, has agreed a four-year deal. Kapo has also revealed that Marcello Lippi, as many people in Italy already suspect, won't be coaching him.

"I'm good friends with Didier Deschamps but Juve haven't told me that he will be the boss," he told L'Equipe. "However, they have said that Lippi won't be there."

Monaco's Deschamps has been hotly tipped with the job and he believes he has the necessary ability. "I feel ready to coach a club like Juventus," the tactician told Controcampo today. "I'm happy at Monaco and I still have a year left on my contract. But contracts can be broken."

However, Monaco President Pierre Svara is confident that Deschamps will not only remain but extend his current agreement.

Kapo confirms: It's Juventus for me

Tribal Football

Juventus have won the race for Auxerre star Olivier Kapo. After a number of confirmations and then denials, Kapo revealed yesterday that he had agreed a pre-contract with Juve for next season.

The French international had also been in talks with Bolton Wanderers and Valencia, but said: "Now is the time to announce it. I am a player of Juventus. I reached the agreement on March 9 on the eve of the game against Deportivo La Coruna. But I didn't want to stay anything until after the medical."

Kapo was in Turin yesterday for that medical and added : "Sporting Lisbon made me an interesting offer also, but I chose Juve because it is a huge club with great players. I will be working with Alessandro del Piero and Pavel Nedved and that can only improve my game."

New deal delights Zambrotta

Gianluca Zambrotta has set out his intentions for the future after he extended his contract with Juventus. The defender was linked with a move to Barcelona but he's now signed a new deal in Turin until 2008.

"I am understandably delighted about this renewal," said the international. "It was always my intention to stay here in a club that is one of the most competitive in the world."

Zambrotta, who has been a revelation in Turin since he was transformed from a midfielder to a left back, is a key figure at the club. That was best illustrated over the past month, as the club exited the Champions' League and the Scudetto race, while he was on the injury list.

So how does he imagine the new Juventus? "For now I'm just focused on ending this term as best as possible," he added. "Then I'm looking to do well with Italy at the European Championships. Our fans have been waiting an age for success and we are one of the favourites."

Meanwhile, director general Luciano Moggi has also been questioned on how the club will change over the summer. "We'll buy a few players only if the right ones come along," said the transfer guru. "We're sticking with our belief of aiming for honours while keeping our finances in order."

Lippi ponders Juve exit

Marcello Lippi insists that he will only consider his future with Juventus at the end of this season. Speculation suggests that the tactician is on his way out but the coach isn't giving anything away. "For now I'm thinking about ending this campaign," he said. "In June, I will meet with the club and we will decide what to do."

The former Napoli and Inter boss has been linked with the Italy job after the 2004 European Championships. And he's keen on the idea. "I would obviously like to take charge of the Azzurri at some point," he explained. "I don't think there is any coach that wouldn't."

Lippi's Juventus got back to winning ways on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Modena to go second in the Division. "It is now our primary objective to end the season in second place," he added. "Even if we are keeping an eye on Milan too."

One of the architects behind the victory at the Delle Alpi was Enzo Maresca, who could be a real star of the next Juventus. "He is a player that will remain with us," concluded Lippi.

Perrotta happy at Chievo

Italian international Simone Perrotta says he is in no hurry to leave little Chievo Verona. The midfielder is said to be of interest to a number of top clubs but he's ready to stay with the Bentegodi side.

"I was close to joining a big club last summer but then nothing came of it," he told TG5 on Monday. "Yet I owe a lot to Chievo and they have great respect for me. I've also won international honours because of them.

"Changing clubs is not a specific objective of mine. I'll just have to wait and see what happens."

Perrotta again impressed yesterday when he scored during the 2-2 draw with League leaders Milan. "I was proud of that strike because I beat Maldini and then Dida," he explained. "It was just a shame that they equalised so late on."

Perrotta is currently on international duty and he is one of the few players guaranteed a starting shirt for Euro 2004. "I always look to give my best for Italy," he added. "There is great competition for places and it is just my aim to get Trap to keep picking me.

Lippi bemoans injury-hit season

Planet Football

Marcello Lippi has answered his critics, asking them to see just how big an impact his Juventus side can make when they have their star men available. Juve and Lippi have been criticised this season, with Milan dominant domestically and the chase for European glory over.

However, a convincing 3-1 victory against Modena saw a return to form - and showcased the talents of players like David Trezeguet, Gianluca Zambrotta and Enzo Maresca, all of whom have missed key games this season.

"Have you seen how Trezeguet, Maresca and Zambrotta played against Modena?" queried Lippi. "Seeing them play so well fills me with anger. I've lost them and Del Piero too at key times of the season and I've had to play decisive matches with only 12 fit players.

"If I had them fit for games against Deportivo [la Coruna], Milan and Lazio it would have been a different story."

Trez delays contract talks

Planet Football

David Trezeguet has insisted that he will not enter into contract discussions with Juventus until the end of the season - fuelling talk of a move to Barcelona. Trezeguet has been in superb form once more for Juve and will be a pivotal player for France in the European Championship in the summer.

Despite his prior insistence that he would stay with Juve, Trezeguet has become a sought after player - and talk of a move to Barca has continually resurfaced. Trezeguet has now fuelled the rumours by stating that he will not hold contract talks until Juventus' season has galvanised.

"It's not the moment to talk about [the contract]," said Trezeguet. "There is a championship to end, second place to fight for and a Coppa Italia to win. The moment to talk about my future will be soon. At a certain point it will be unavoidable."

Barcelona president will beat Chelsea for Heinze

Tribal Football

Barcelona insist they are on the verge of landing Paris Saint Germain defender Gabriel Heinze, despite Chelsea's interest. The Argentina international is a prime target for Chelsea, though confusion over manager Claudio Ranieri's future has let in Barca.

Barca president Joan Laporta revealed: "We have excellent relations with PSG and we will undoubtedly recruit Gabriel Heinze, their big Argentinian defender. In exchange, we are ready to allow Paris the first priority that we have on (Porto midfielder) Deco."

Diego lets slip Tottenham's Mourinho link

Tribal Football

Santos whiz Diego has let slip that Tottenham could be close to securing the services of Porto coach Jose Mourinho. Despite the interest of AC Milan, Diego is expected to join Spurs in the summer in a £11million deal.

The Brazilian, who has finally sorted out his EU passport problems, said: "Learning a new style of football and a new language would be a difficult task. I would prefer to play in London with a Portuguese manager in the summer."

Porto's Mourinho is the only Portuguese manager to reveal talks with Spurs this season.

Juventus' Trezeguet celebrates after scoring against Modena Juventus' Maresca celebrates Juve's second Trezeguet celebrates Juve's third with Tacchinardi

A David Trezeguet brace ensured Juventus can snatch second place off defeated Roma, but it was another less than convincing display.

New Modena boss Gianfranco Bellotto made his debut on the bench by facing reigning Italian Champions Juventus. The former Venezia Coach took over the squad this week after Alberto Malesani was sacked and faced a tough task to stop the Canarini sliding into Serie B.

Juve's last remaining objective for the campaign is to take second place off Roma and they were at last able to welcome back Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessandro Birindelli from injury.

The Bianconeri were aggressive but ineffective, and Alessio Tacchinardi burst through a sea of bodies, but his shot was off target from six yards. Soon after Enzo Maresca's free kick curled inches over the bar, while Marco Di Vaio's bicycle-kick was well saved.

There was bad news for the Bianconeri, as Ciro Ferrara limped off after 25 minutes to be replaced by Igor Tudor. Modena also went close with a Stephen Makinwa counter-attack, but Gianluigi Buffon was able to block his angled drive.

The best chance for Juventus came just before the break, as Adriano Zancope' got down well to turn a Zambrotta effort round the post. At the dawn of the second half Zancope scrambled across the goal to fingertip Maresca's precise free kick on to the woodwork.

Juventus eventually broke through the Modena wall on 57 minutes, as Maresca rose to nod in a Mauro Camoranesi corner kick, although Zancope could perhaps have done better. The Bianconeri's second goal arrived in similar circumstances, as another Camoranesi corner was touched on by Tacchinardi for David Trezeguet's header.

But Modena got back into the match on 67 minutes through a looping Massimo Marazzina header that slipped into the bottom corner past Buffon's outstretched hand. The former Chievo striker had only just stepped on to the field as a substitute.

Juve rather sat on their slender lead and Diomansy Kamara nearly grabbed an equaliser when his shot was deflected just past the upright. The Canarini refused to give in and Buffon performed a good save on Kamara and Nicola Campedelli's follow-up was charged down.

But Trezeguet sealed up the points in the closing stages with a very controversial goal. The Frenchman turned in Nedved's pass, but replays suggest he was clearly offside.

Post-Match Comments

Marcello Lippi: "We needed to win and that's what we did. To begin with my line-up was too top-heavy and we ran a few too many risks, but with an extra midfielder matters improved considerably. The main aim is to go for second place and wait for the leaders to slip up, although I frankly think that is unlikely."

Lippi: We Want The Second Place

Marcello Lippi after the defeat with AC Milan announced that Juventus's goal for the season would have been the second place but he didn't expect it to happen so soon.

"Today we had to win against Modena and that is what we did," the manager said. "I have to admit that we didn't start the match very well because we had to many strikers on but when I put a midfielder on the game changed".

"We want to finish the season in second place and that is what we are working for," he added. "I don't think that we can win the championship because I just can't see AC Milan losing a couple of games in a row".

Barcelona reach agreements with transfer targets

Tribal Football

Juventus' Trezeguet waves to the crowd Barcelona have struck agreements over personal terms with three of their summer transfer targets.

Juventus striker David Trezeguet, Real Sociedad winger Lopez Rekarte and Deportivo La Coruna forward Alberto Luque have all given their approval to contracts offered by Barca management. However, the Spanish giants still need to open talks with the players' respective clubs over transfer fees.

Trezeguet is said to have already settled on playing for Barca next season, with talks at an advanced stage with his Dad, who also acts as his agent, and Italian intermediary Antonio Caliendo. Barca are considering offering Juve £15 million cash, plus a player worth £10 million on the open market. Gabri, Thiago Motta and Xavi have all been mentioned as possible candidates in a swap.

Juventus offer Real Madrid Thuram for Morientes

Juventus are offering Real Madrid defender Lilian Thuram in exchange for striker Fernando Morientes.

Spanish international centre-forward Morientes is currently on-loan at AS Monaco and is being lined up by Juve as a replacement for David Trezeguet. Indeed, Italian press reports suggest Monaco coach Didier Deschamps has recommended Morientes to Juve ahead of his summer return to Turin.

Meanwhile, Juve chief Luciano Moggi has baulked at Real's £7 million asking price for the striker, instead offering veteran defender Thuram in a straight swap.

Juve chases Jimenez and Kharja

Yahoo! Sport Italia

Juventus is scouting Serie B in search of reinforces, and two players from Ternana, which is having a good season, have been continually linked. Luciano Moggi is interested in their 19-year-old Chilean playmaker Luis Jimenez and 21-year-old midfielder Houssine Kharja.

If Ternana gets promoted, Juve will probably have to agree to loan them back to Ternana in order to negotiate any deal, as Ternana president has insisted he will not sell the stars if they get promoted.

Moratti targets Roma's Totti and Emerson

Yahoo! Sport Italia

Massimo Moratti has targeted two stars in order to challenge Real Madrid and Milan. The nerazzurri president has already decided on who to headhunt: Roma's Francesco Totti and Emerson. However, everything depends on whether Inter can obtain fourth place and qualify for the UEFA Champions League, and even on obtaining this season's UEFA Cup.

If Inter do not get Roma's two stars, Morrati's plan B is the trio of Bayer Leverkusen's Lucio, Udinese's David Pizarro and Brescia's Brazilian forward Matuzalem. Lucio and Pizarro are Juventus targets, while £2.5 million Matuzalem are also being followed by Milan.

Juve prepare Samuel swoop

Roma defender Walter Samuel Juventus are said to be eyeing up Walter Samuel and Fernando Cavenaghi to kick-start their new-look squad next season.

The defence has been the main weak point for the Bianconeri this year and reinforcements re needed for their ageing back line. Although Parma youngsters Matteo Ferrari and Daniele Bonera are the main targets, it is now reported that a swoop is being prepared for Walter Adrian Samuel.

The 26-year-old Roma star has been very impressive since arriving from Argentina and could be sold off in order to help cut their debts. Real Madrid were previously linked to the defender, but Juventus could leap in with a bid first.

It is believed that young talents such as Matteo Brighi, Manuele Blasi and Giuseppe Sculli - all owned by the Bianconeri but currently on loan to other clubs - could be used as part of the deal.

Juve scout Sivori recommends Cavenaghi

River Plate's Fernando Cavenaghi Meanwhile, the long-standing links between Juventus and Fernando Cavenaghi could be about to take an important step forward.

If Juventus sign Cavenaghi then it will certainly not be a mistake," assures former Bianconeri star and South American talent scout Omar Sivori.

"He is still only 20 years old, but already scored 49 goals in 79 games with River Plate. I don't think there's another young striker like him in the world right now."

A new forward is expected to arrive as a replacement for the Barcelona-bound David Trezeguet in the summer. "If Trezeguet does leave," continued Sivori, "then Cavenaghi would be an excellent substitute. He is physically strong and has an EC passport as his grandfather is Italian."

Lippi crowns Rossoneri

Marcello Lippi believes the Scudetto is in Milan's hands and Juve's new aim is to snatch second place from Roma. "The Rossoneri are doing extraordinary things this season and although we are not mathematically ruled out, I'd say the Scudetto is no longer an issue."

Lippi has won the Italian title for the last two years running, but the eleven-point gap has all but eliminated them from the race. "Taking second place is crucial for our future," insisted the Coach. "Avoiding the Champions' League preliminary round means being able to prepare ourselves properly for the next season."

The club's fitness regime has come under fire following a series of muscular injuries to the squad, but Gianluca Zambrotta and Alessandro Birindelli are back for Sunday's match with Modena. That is not the only good news, as Zambrotta has officially extended his contract with Juventus until 2008, scotching rumours of a move to Barcelona.

"This is an important factor, even if we can't risk everyone from the start," he explains. "Modena are a good squad, but we want more than a victory. We must be utterly convincing."

He even announced the starting eleven for that tie as Buffon, Birindelli, Ferrara, Thuram, Zambrotta, Camoranesi, Tacchinardi, Maresca, Nedved, Di Vaio and Trezeguet.

Many newspapers in Italy maintain that Lippi will not be there to lead them through the summer, but he cuts short any discussion on the matter. "I still have another year left on my contract," he assures. "That is all I need to say."

Juventus - Modena preview

Soccernet

New Modena coach Gianfranco Bellotto goes into his first game in charge at Juventus on Sunday insisting his players can beat the drop. Bellotto took over following the sacking of Alberto Malesani, who was let go after last weekend's 2-1 home defeat against fellow strugglers Reggina.

That setback placed the Gialloblu club in the relegation zone. With eight league games left to play Modena are two points adrift of Reggina who occupy the last position of safety.

"I am aware of the difficulty we face but the margins to come out of the relegation zone are there," said Bellotto.

However, the former Sampdoria coach will have to make drastic changes. Modena have only taken nine points out of a possible 36 in 2004, and their last victory dates back to February 8, a 2-1 triumph over bottom team Ancona.

"I am used to seeing the sunshine even when it rains," said Bellotto, who has never coached in Italy's top flight before.

The sun doesn't seem to have been shining on defending champions Juventus much of late. The Turin giants have been knocked out of the Champions League - the competition they reached the final of last season - and are well off the pace in the title race.

"It is difficult to know if it's better to face a strong team who have many champions, but who are out of form, or a rival that is doing well," said the 54-year-old. The calendar doesn't appear to favour Modena, though, with a game against leaders AC Milan to follow.

Juve, meanwhile, are at a loss to explain what has caused their dip in form. "We have not had a great year and if we knew the real cause for our fall in form we would certainly have been able to change it," said veteran defender Ciro Ferrara.

The transfer of Edgar Davids, who was out of favour with Marcello Lippi, during the winter break clearly hasn't helped, especially considering the impact he has had since his move to Barcelona.

Barca have charged up the table since the arrival of Davids, and it was little surprise that they bowed out of the UEFA Cup to Celtic with the goggle-wearing Dutch international absent from both games.

Modena welcome back defender Mauro Mayer who missed last weekend's game due to suspension, while Juve defender Nicola Legrottaglie could make his comeback after recovering from injury.

Juventus chief: We'll be active in summer market

Tribal Football

Juventus chief Luciano Moggi has confirmed they will be active in the summer market. At the announcement of Gianluca Zambrotta's contract renewal, Moggi said: "We will make the signings that we deem appropriate. We will strengthen the squad where is needed." Zambrotta has penned a new deal taking him through to 2008 at Juve.

"I've always wanted to stay here and am happy that with the contract renewal." Gianluca Zambrotta states. "It has always been my wish to remain in a club which is playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world."

Zambrotta added: "Currently we think only of the next match and to end this season well. Personally I have recovered from my injuries, and are ready to join my teammates and to give my contribution.

Ibrahimovic reveals: "I want l'Italia"

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could soon be playing in Italy. On friday Ajax's Swedish striker said that he wants to play in the Serie A. Ibrahimovic is estimated at €20 million, and Juventus and Milan have been following his progress for the past two seasons.

The Bianconeri could decide to sign him if David Trezeguet decides to leave for Barcelona. However according to the Ajax youth coach, Ibrahimovic is close to Marco Van Basten, and the Milan legend could advise him to choose Milan instead. In any case Milan have made it known that they will not be making a move for him until the end of next season.

Juventus - Modena Preview

New Modena boss Gianfranco Bellotto could not have asked for a tougher debut game as he visits struggling giants Juventus.

The Bianconeri have not reacted well to their injury crisis and now find themselves eleven points adrift of leaders Milan, not to mention out of the Champions' League and 2-0 down in the first leg of the Coppa Italia. It shows how far the level of confidence has dropped that Marcello Lippi was happy with a 0-0 draw away to Udinese last week - a result that ended a run of three straight defeats in all competitions.

The return of David Trezeguet failed to make much impact, but Enzo Maresca is a valuable element of a midfield otherwise short on creativity and invention. The injury list remains extensive with Mark Iuliano, Gianluca Zambrotta, Alessandro Del Piero, Fabrizio Miccoli, Paolo Montero and maybe even Nicola Legrottaglie on the treatment table. The defence is reshuffled once again with Igor Tudor settling into a central role.

Modena slipped into the bottom four with a surprise 2-1 home defeat to Reggina and that result cost Alberto Malesani his job. The tactician was in the balance for several weeks and his sacking did not come as a surprise. The trident attack of Fabio Vignaroli, Diomansy Kamara and Stephen Makinwa had created more goals, but left the team hopelessly unbalanced and open to the counter-attack.

Former Venezia Coach Gianfranco Bellotto will be expected to bolster the defence for this difficult trip to Turin, so Vignaroli could make way for John Mensah. Nicola Amoruso will hope to be fit in time to face his former club, but Omar Milanetto is out after limping off during the Reggina game.

Lippi staying say Old Lady

Juventus insist that boss Marcello Lippi will still be in charge next season, but they have opened the door for Didier Deschamps. 'Lippi is staying here with us but Deschamps could be the future," director general Luciano Moggi is quoted as saying.

"Didier was one of my players and we often talk to each other. He has a bright career ahead of him and I hope to bring him back here one day. But not next season."

Rumours in Italy suggest that Lippi, who has a contract until 2005, could quit the club in the summer to take charge of the Italian national side. That led to stories suggesting that Monaco boss Deschamps, who played under Lippi, was a leading contender to take over.

The media also believe that the club are set for a summer revolution after a disappointing campaign. But Moggi has cooled the numerous reports. "People claim that we have already bought Olivier Kapo (Auxerre) but that is not true," he added. "If we think he is a good player then we could look at him."

Juve have also been linked with Auxerre defender Phillipe Mexes. "He is an interesting player and very young too," continued the transfer guru. Moggi added that Juve are keeping an eye on Parma striker Alberto Gilardino, said to be a possible replacement for David Trezeguet.

Yet the Bianconeri official has hit back at claims that the Frenchman is set for a summer move to Barcelona. "We are not selling Trezeguet or Pavel Nedved," concluded Moggi.

Zambrotta back for Juve

The Juventus injury list is getting shorter as Gianluca Zambrotta is now available for selection again. The Italian international has been out of action for the past month and he's been really missed. However, the left-back has resumed training this week and he is expected to feature against Modena on Sunday.

David Trezeguet, Enzo Maresca and Alessandro Birindelli are also set to play at the Delle Alpi after their recent fitness problems.

There may be a new face on the right wing with the introduction of youth team player Davide Chiumiento. The Swiss teenager was fielded in midfield instead of Mauro Camoranesi in Thursday's training session.

Juventus to follow Arsenal's French market push

Tribal Football

Juventus chief Luciano Moggi is set to follow Arsenal's lead and begin chasing France's best young talent.

"I have noticed that the French in Italy are improving, like a fine wine," joked Moggi yesterday. "They say we've signed Olivier Kapo, but that's not true - though he would be a great acquisition. Mexes? He's an interesting player and very young. Also is Cisse, who has shown some good form this season."

Asked about AS Monaco coach and ex-Juventus favourite Didier Deschamps, Moggi added, "We welcome our former players back to the club. He is doing very well at Monaco and it would be wonderful to have him working here in the future - but that won't happen next year."

Tottenham are being linked with Lazio duo Stefano Fiore and Bernardo Corradi. Striker Corradi and midfielder Fiore are both expected to be made available at the end of the season by Lazio to help clear mounting debts. Ajax demand fee for Chelsea, Juventus target Trabelsi

Tribal Football

Ajax insist their contract with fullback Hatem Trabelsi is watertight. The Tunisia international had hoped to leave Ajax in the summer on a Bosman, but the Dutch giants are set to hold him to a two-year option they have in his current agreement.

Juventus, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been in contact with Trabelsi about next season, but may baulk at paying a fee for the 27 year-old. Ajax supremo Arie Van Eijden said, "We have consulted our lawyers and they assure us that the contract is in our favour. Anyone wanting Trabelsi will have to deal with us."

Chelsea to out-bid Man Utd for star Spanish pair

Tribal Football

Chelsea have been studying the Spanish transfer market in recent months and are ready to shake it up before the end of the season.

Blues owner Roman Abramovich will insist money is no object when he bids for Real Betis winger Joaquin and Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres. The two Spanish internationals are regarded, along with Arsenal's Jose Reyes, as their country's best young talents and are also being chased by Manchester United.

Unietd have had offers for both players rejected over the past 12 months, but Abramovich has been convinced that the pair can add the flair he is desperate to see his Chelsea team play with next season and will splash out big on the attacking duo.

Torres refutes Italian talk

Planet Football

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres has rubbished claims he expressed an interest in signing for Milan or Juventus. The Spanish international hit-man reiterated his assertion that the only way he would leave Los Rojiblancos was if they chose to sell him, and denied hinting at a switch to Serie A.

Media reports earlier in the week had quoted the teenage sensation as saying that he would only consider moving to Italy if he left Atletico. However, Torres has now dismissed the story and says it was nothing more than mischief-making by the Italian media and reassured Atletico fans that he has no intention of quitting El Vicente Calderon.

"The only way I would leave is if Atletico needed me to financially," he stated. "Going to Real Madrid would be the most difficult, what's more I have never spoken about going to Juve or Milan and it's not the first time they have changed my words for their benefit.

"Atletico supporters can stay calm because my intention is to stay here for a long time."

Torres went on to express his delight at his recall to the national side for the forthcoming friendly international against Denmark.

"The boss (Inaki Saez) has said that he has a fixed group and that the rest must win a place for the European Championship," he continued. "My presence will depend on the remaining games because I need to be in good physical condition.

"What's more there is a lot of competition for places amongst the forwards."

Moggi wants Deschamps

Planet Football

Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi has confirmed the club do eventually wish to employ Didier Deschamps as coach and insists David Trezeguet does not have to be sold in the summer.

Deschamps enjoyed a distinguished playing spell with the Turin giants and is now carving a burgeoning reputation as a coach with Monaco. His exploits with the French outfit have sparked suggestions he will take over at Stadio Delle Alpi next season, particularly with Marcello Lippi under pressure at Juventus.

Following the club's early exit from the UEFA Champions League and their failure to seriously challenge Milan for the Serie A title, Lippi's position has been questioned. Moggi has no plans to dispense with Lippi in the summer but acknowledged he would dearly love to see Deschamps back at the club as coach.

"Lippi is the Juventus coach," Moggi told Gazzetta dello Sport. "We have nothing to reproach him for. He had the bad luck to find a Milan team that were going at a speed of 100km/h and a Juve team without players due to injuries.

"Deschamps was our player, we speak to each other frequently. He is the future and I hope to take him back to Turin but not next season."

Moggi also discussed the playing futures of Trezeguet and European Footballer of the Year Pavel Nedved, insisting the pair will stay at the club. Barcelona have admitted their admiration for French forward Trezeguet but Moggi is adamant he will not be sold in the summer.

"We won't sell them," continued Moggi. "We have other plans to obtain a financial balance. You can also make your market with other good players, without having to sell the stars. Nedved can give a lot yet."

As for potential incomings at Juventus, Moggi admitted the club wanted to sign a South American tyro, having clearly been impressed by Brazilian starlet Kaka's impact at Milan. But Moggi fears there are no suitable players and may turn to the French market with the likes of Auxerre pair Olivier Kapo and Philippe Mexes potential recruits.

Moggi added: "If there was a South American player able to change the face of Juve, I'll certainly buy him but at the moment I only see 'half-players'. France is another thing. I've seen that French players in Italy are improving, like wine.

"Who? Not Kapo yet but if, as someone says, he's good and doesn't cost too much, we can talk. Mexes is an interesting player and, in addition, is young. (Djibril) Cisse is not bad but he has particular counter-attacking characteristics. (Benoit) Pedretti? No, have you see what Lyon have bid?

"(Alberto) Gilardino. With Parma he's doing good things, he's good. If he has the character for Juve, he can wait."

Juve eye van der Vaart swoop

Planet Football

Juventus are lining up a summer switch for Dutch maestro Rafael van der Vaart as a possible replacement for Pavel Nedved. The Turin giants are bracing themselves for the possible departure of the Czech Republic star, who has been one of their best players throughout a disappointing season.

Should Nedved leave, Marcelo Lippi would opt for a swoop for Ajax's young star van der Vaart. The 21-year-old is one of the hottest properties around Europe and is not expected to remain at the Amsterdam ArenA beyond the season.

"If after this season, the right offer was made to the club, then I would look at it," said van der Vaart. "In the past, it has happened a lot with the young champions, from the immense Johan Cruyff to my friend van der Meyde.

"I will build up my experience by having a career at a large foreign club."

Van der Vaart's contract expires in 2006 but he has a clause which says he can leave this season if Ajax agree on a fee for him. He has previously stated that he would love a move to Spain, where his mother was born, and especially Barcelona.

Juve would provide another option for him should an offer come in and he would then have to decide if he fancies plying his trade in Serie A.

Vieri To Join Juve Only If Lippi Stays

SoccerAge

The latest speculation in Italy concerning Christian Vieri is that the Italian striker will not be wearing the nerazzurri shirt next season if Alberto Zaccheroni remains as coach.

Moreover, his favoured destination would be Juventus, but only if Marcello Lippi stays as the bianconeri mentor. This would explain why the current Italian champions do not seem interested in holding on to David Trezeguet, whose future lies in Spain with Barcelona.

Angry Montella on the attack

Roma striker Vincenzo Montella has reacted bitterly to Mauro Camoranesi's inclusion in the Italy squad and political wrangling around football. "I think that the Nazionale should be for the Italians," stated the hitman during a meeting with University students in the Capital. "I am against the presence of Oriundi in the Azzurri jersey."

Montella was clearly referring to Juventus winger Camoranesi, who accepted the opportunity to play for Italy after his home country Argentina did not call him for international duty. Oriundi is the nickname used for South Americans of Italian descent.

The Azzurri side is becoming increasingly difficult for Montella to break back in to following months of injury worries, but he sensationally rejected a slot in the Euro 2004 squad. "I can honestly say that I would not be interested in a cameo role at this tournament," noted the former Sampdoria star.

Camoranesi and Giovanni Trapattoni were not the only targets for a clearly irritated Montella, as he also turned his attention to the political wrangling surrounding the sport.

The last few weeks have seen the Government proposals to help clubs clear their debts by spreading out tax payments over a number of years rejected by high-ranking politicians. "If the politicians want to help the clubs financially," sniped the striker, "they could start by paying for their tickets when they go to the Stadium."
