Chapter 8

"What do you think?" Serena asked as she looked over Darien's shoulder. "Did I do it right?"

"Yep. It's all good," Darien said, nodding.

"Great! I was hoping I did a good job." Serena stepped away from Darien and sat down on the edge of the table next to him. Both were acutely aware how close they were to each other. "How's the thing with Mr. Walters?"

"Well..." Darien smiled mischievously as he pulled out a folder and handed it flourishingly over to Serena who just laughed and flipped it open.

She read the pages quickly and gasped. "We got a deal! We got a deal! That's wonderful!" She dropped the folder and slipped her arms around Darien's neck and hugged him tightly. "This is wonderful!"

Darien laughed and slowly hugged Serena back. She felt very good in his arms. As if she belonged there. But he immediately pushed the thought away and lifted Serena off the ground and swung her around.

"Hey! I'm getting dizzy!" Serena laughed, and Darien placed her back down on the floor. She weaved a bit and he caught her.

"Last time I do that," he laughed.

"I don't care! This is great! Closing a deal with Walters is the best thing ever!" Serena exclaimed as she hugged Darien again.

"Of course," Darien agreed. He smiled at her flushed cheeks and the excitement sparkling in her blue eyes. He wanted so bad to kiss her right then.

"Wow, this totally calls for a celebration!" Serena laughed. She looked down at her watch and saw that it was 10:15 pm on a Friday night. They should have been home an hour ago but they had both been so absorbed in their work that they hadn't looked at the time. "I think we should get home and tell Raye. She might be really mad at us if we don't go home soon."

"Your right," Darien agreed, not wanting to risk his sister's fiery.

They began to pack up their things. When everything was neat and clean, they left the office and took the elevator down to the parking lot. There they got into Darien's silver Porsche and drove back home.

"This is just wonderful. I didn't think it would really happen. Walters seemed really reluctant to close the deal," Serena sighed happily as they listened to a little bit of classical music on the ride home. It was funny how she thought of Darien's house as her home. She had only been living in it for less than a month. And Christmas was in five days.

Raye had already decorated the house beautiful with Serena and Setsuna's help. They had the tree and some presents underneath the tree already. Serena had felt like she really belonged while helping them out. It was a nice feeling and she wanted it to last but she knew deep down inside that the next November 25 she and Darien would divorce and she would no longer be a part of that small family.

A strange familiar feeling filled Serena as she thought of this. Sadness. That was it. She felt very sad that she would have to leave some day. Darien was a great partner and friend, Raye was already like another sister to her. Setsuna was close to being a mother. They were all great people and she loved them with all her heart. It would be very depressing when she had to leave.

"What are you thinking about?" Darien asked softly.

"Oh nothing, really. Just something silly," Serena replied quietly.

Sensing that she wasn't going to say anything further Darien didn't push it. He just continued to drive, and remembering Serena's wonderful flowery scent when she had hugged him and the softness of her body against his. He almost sighed in despair out loud. What was wrong with him? He couldn't be falling head of heels for Serena, could he? Of course he had been fighting it for a while. Desperately trying to convince himself that Serena was only a friend and would always stay a friend. It was just better that way. No one go hurt when "D" (Divorce) day came.

But did he want a divorce? Serena was such a good companion and a really good business partner. They worked good together. It wasn't like anything else he had experienced before. All his other business partners were always really difficult to deal with. And even though Serena had her own mind but she was willing to compromise and came up with the best of ideas. And with Serena already his wife Darien didn't have to worry about taking another. They would live a nice life together even as friends and not lovers.

Sighing inwardly, Darien just continued to drive.

~*~

The next day Serena took a day off as a reward for the victory with the Walters company and decided to go Christmas shopping. She took one of Darien's many cars and drove down to the mall and began to look around.

She found a great sweater she could send to Lita, expensive perfume for Mina, an interesting book on new medical studies for Amy, a bright red dress for Raye, a pair of silver earrings with garnet drops for Setsuna, a crystal angel for her mother, and a sporty looking tweed jacket for Mr. Knight. Those were her close friends and family.

Now for the guys of her close girls. She got a best seller book for Greg, a silk Armani tie for David, a new leather wallet for Ken, a smart looking silk shirt for Taiki, a watch for Jadeite, and a pair of slacks for Andrew. She got Rita some expensive perfume.

After all her shopping had been done, Serena was prepared to go home when she realized she had to get something for Darien. But what could she get? She knew he liked to read and liked chocolate....

Heading back to the bookstore, Serena bought a book that Darien would probably be interested. Then she went to the most expensive chocolate shop and bought two pounds worth of chocolate. When that was done she mentally checked off anyone else who needed to be bought a present. When she came up with nothing, she headed back home. If she forgot anyone she could always go back tomorrow and pick up something.

~*~

"So, how's your relationship between you and Serena?" Andrew asked from across the booth. He and Darien had decided to spend some guy time with each other after Darien had been spending way too much time at the office and needed a break.

"It's going on pretty well," Darien said, sipping his beer.

"That's good. She's really pretty, Darien."

"You shouldn't be saying that, Andrew. Rita might get jealous."

Andrew smirked. "You know what I mean. She's a good girl for you, Dare."

"How would you know?" Darien asked warily.

"Call it intuition," Andrew said knowingly. "Serena seems like a really nice girl who could love someone like you. Don't you think you should give her a chance and see what happens?"

"Andrew, you know as much as I know that this whole marriage thing is a fake. Next year we'll be divorced and going our separate ways. I don't wanna pressure her into anything just because some paper says we're legally married when we really aren't. You have to be in love to be married."

"Such sentimental words, Darien." Andrew sipped his own beer and licked his lips. "I really think Serena is perfect for you. From what I hear you two work together good and there's some kind of strong attraction between you and her."

"And where have you heard this?" Darien asked but already knowing the little sneaky source.

"Raye and Setsuna," Andrew replied, shrugging. "They say that they've seen you two together and the electricity is there."

"Spare me, Andrew. Just because I'm not attached and 27 does not mean messing with my head."

Andrew looked at Darien and sighed. "Look, as your friend, I say try it out with Serena. She seems to be a reasonably girl. Let's see if the sparks fly."

"No, Andrew. I don't wanna ruin our friendship. Those things last longer."

"Longer than love?"

"Who said anything about love?"

"Darien, just give what I said some thought." Andrew looked down at his watch and grimaced guiltily. "I gotta go. Rita's expecting me." He dropped a couple of bills on the table and left the restaurant.

He's nuts. Gotta too much romance stuck up in his head, Darien thought resentfully as he paid his half and left the restaurant as well. While walking down the street to his car he passed by a jewelry shop. He had already done his Christmas shopping for everyone else but he hadn't been able to find anything for Serena.

Now he saw something he wouldn't mind getting for Serena. It was a long silver necklace with a crescent moon pendant formed over a perfect rose. He walked into the jewelry shop and came back out with it wrapped in a silver velvet box. He smiled as he knew Serena would like it.

Slipping the gift into his pocket, Darien got into his car and drove home.

~*~

Four Days Later....Christmas!! Yeah!!

"Merry Christmas!" Raye exclaimed as she jumped into Serena's room.

Serena started and jumped a foot into the air. She landed hard against her soft bed and moaned. She closed her eyes and tried to go back to sleep but Raya pulled open the curtains and allowed beautiful sunshine to pour through. Damn it.

"Raye, I need sleep," Serena muttered. "Last night was a late one."

"Yeah, well, deal with it since I wanna open up presents," Raye said, grinning.

Serena sat up and sighed. "Fine. Just let me get dressed."

"Meetcha down stairs!" Then Raye skipped out of the room.

Serena struggled out of bed and stumbled into her bathroom. Last night had been a Christmas Eve party and everyone was invited. Being the wife of Darien Knight she had to prepare and host everything. It was exhausting. In the end Darien had to carry her up stairs to sleep. She had been pooped!

Splashing her face with some really cold water Serena woke up and took a shower. She got dressed in a soft white sweater and warm khaki pants. She brushed her hair and tied it up in it's odangos with green and red ribbons trailing from it. She had a thing for ribbons.

Yawning, Serena pulled on some socks and slipped on her white slippers and slowly walked downstairs. Coffee and donuts were out on the table in the living room where the Christmas tree sat with all of it's presents underneath it's green branches.

Setsuna was already there, talking with Darien who looked like he had a hard time waking up as well.

"Hey, sleep head," Darien greeted as he saw a tired Serena stumble into the room and plop down on the couch beside him. "Raye got ya up, didn't she?"

Serena grumbled her reply and closed her eyes as she desperately seeked some kind of sleep.

"All right! Who wants to open up their presents first?" Raye exclaimed as she burst into the room with her grandfather at her side.

"Good morning, Mr. Knight," Serena said, stifling a yawn.

"I see Raye has gotten you too," Edward chuckled as he sat down beside Serena.

"Yes, sir," Serena said, nodding. She reached out and picked up some coffee. She was sitting back with it when she suddenly lost her grip slightly and caused scalding coffee to spill over her hands. She cried out in pain and almost dropped it but she quickly placed it back down on the tray and brought her hand close to her body.

"Serena!" Darien exclaimed. He rushed over to her and gently took her hand and began to examine it. "How much does it hurt?"

"A lot," Serena said through gritted teeth.

"Let's get this rinsed out," Darien suggested anxiously as he pulled up her to her feet and led her to the kitchen. He turned on the faucet quickly and ran her hand under it.

Serena was a bit shocked at the gentleness that Darien handled her hand with. It was as if he really cared tenderly if she got her. It warmed her heart at the thought.

When the heat and pain finally subsided she took her hand out from underneath the water.

"I only need to put some ointment and bandage it," she said as she dabbed her bright red hand with a gentle cloth.

"Are you sure you don't want to go to the hospital?" Darien asked worriedly as he pulled out the first aid kit.

"I'm fine, Darien. I'm a nurse, remember? I know," Serena said, smiling as Darien smoothed some cool then stinging ointment on her hand. Then he slowly wrapped the gauzed bandages around her hand with great care.

"There, all nice," Serena said, smiling cheerfully. "I'm fine, Darien. Really. Let's not ruin any one's Christmas, okay?"

"Yeah," Darien agreed reluctantly.

"Good. Come on, let's go open up those presents," Serena said cheerfully. (AN: If anyone thinks my writing bites from here on it's because I'm tired but since people want to read the next few chapters I'm doing this. What can ya say? I keep my promises.)

Darien nodded and they returned to the living room.

"Are you all right, Serena?" Setsuna immediately asked.

"I'm fine. Now, let's open up those presents," Serena said excitedly.

Everyone was a little reluctant but they agreed with her and did as told. Everyone was smiling and thanking each other as the presents were opened one by one.

"Wow, Serena. I've been meaning to get this book but I've been really busy lately," Darien said, smiling. "Thanks. And the chocolates are the best."

"I hope they're good enough. I just really couldn't think of anything else," Serena said sheepishly.

"No, it's perfect," Darien said, smiling.

"Great."

"Now, I have something for you." Darien took out the small jewelry box and handed it over to Serena.

"Darien, what's this?" Serena asked as she took the box slowly and examined it.

"Just open it up and see," Darien urged.

Serena smiled and did as told. She gasped as she saw the beautiful necklace that laid nestled in the soft material of the jewelry box.

"It's beautiful, Darien," Serena said softly.

"Wow, that thing is gorgeous," Raye agreed.

"Simply perfect," Setsuna said approvingly.

"Jewelry always touches a girl's heart," Edward chuckled.

Serena smiled and hugged Darien tightly. "Thank you. I'll totally wear this for the party tonight."

"Great, another party to host," Setsuna sighed. "Everything's prepared though and the caters and decorators are coming in a half an hour."

"Good," Serena said, smiling. "Then everything will be set. The guests arrive around 7 o'clock, right?"

"Yep," Raye said, nodding as she flipped back her long black hair. "Why don't we clean all of this up and get to work?"

Serena and Setsuna nodded in agreement.

Christmas Party...

"You look wonderful, Serena," Raye gasped as Serena appeared in the ball room. Already some guests had arrived and were chatting among each other.

"I'm sorry I was late. I just couldn't decide on my make up," Serena said apologetically. She looked down at the simple white dress she wore and thought if it was too much. There were no sleeves and it was tight around her chest with a pretty gold design underneath her bosom. The dress clung to her figure but loosened around the legs so she could walk properly in her new white heels. It was very pretty but very simple. Something she liked to go for rather than extravagant gowns. She wore her hair up in a complicated bun with lilies weaved into them with long tendrils of curled hair going down to her waist.

"Don't worry. It's worth it. Darien's eyes are going to pop out of their sockets!" Raye exclaimed enthusiastically. She wore a short red dress that stopped mid-thigh. It had long sleeves and a low back cut. The neck line was a bit revealing but that was Raye. Her black hair was put up in a simple high bun with crimson red flowers around it.

Serena looked at Raye and frowned. "Why would he do that?"

Raye sighed and rolled her eyes. "I don't know? Maybe because he likes you?"

"Raye, we're only friends," Serena said, smiling and shaking her head. "Nothing more."

"Yeah, right. I'm going to greet some guest." Raye waved and disappeared to the front door where more guests were pouring in.

Everyone came for the Knight Christmas Party. It's always the best of the century. And everyone wanted to take a look at Darien Knight's new bride. All of the women were curious on who was the girl who had managed to steal Darien Knight's impossible to touch heart.

A lot of them had to agree that Serena Knight was a beautiful young woman and was worthy of Darien's attention. But jealous and resentment still hung in the air as Serena walked around greeting guests and making sure everyone was comfortable as the hostess of the house is suppose to do.

"Serena!"

Serena whirled around and smiled as she saw her best friend, Amy rushing towards her. She wore a beautiful dark blue dress with sparkles. Serena caught Amy in a tight hug.

"Amy! I didn't think you could make it!" Serena gasped.

"Of course I made it!" Amy laughed. "I even brought Greg along." She suddenly blushed and smiled shyly. "He proposed to me." She lifted her left hand and revealed a beautiful diamond ring.

"Congratulations, Amy! I knew he would propose sooner or later!" Serena laughed as she hugged her friend even tighter. "I'm so happy for you!"

"Thank you," Amy said, still blushing.

Greg, dressed smartly in an expensive suit, slowly walked up to them and kissed Serena on the cheek. "Merry Christmas. This place looks wonderful."

"Thanks, Greg. Raye and Setsuna helped me out. Why don't you guys go and socialize with the other guests?" Serena suggested.

Amy and Greg nodded and walked over to a small group they recognized.

Serena turned and almost bumped into someone but quickly stepped back. She looked to find Rita Keller standing in front of her. Rita wore her dark hair up in a sophisticated bun. She wore a long peach colored gown that looked nice on her.

"Merry Christmas, Rita! I didn't see you," Serena said, smiling at the older woman.

"Merry Christmas to you too, Serena. This place is wonderful. Did you do it all alone?" Rita asked.

"No, I had help from Raye and Setsuna," Serena said, smiling. "So, are you enjoying yourself?"

"Yes, very much," Rita said, smiling.

"Wonderful. I want everyone to be as comfortable as possible," Serena said a bit nervously. She looked around and was relieved to see no disapproving faces. Just lots of smiles and laughter.

"Don't worry, you did a wonderful job," Rita said.

"Thank you."

"Um, have you seen Darien?" Rita asked.

Serena turned her head at Rita and blinked. "Why?"

"I just wanted to talk to him," Rita said obscurely.

"Yes, he's in the den with some business partners. Even on Christmas that man is working," Serena sighed.

Rita laughed and nodded. "Thank you, Serena. The party is wonderful." Then Rita disappeared to find Darien.

Serena stood there for a moment trying to sort out her feelings. They were a jumble mess since Rita mentioned seeing Darien. Of course Darien could see anyone he wanted but Rita such a dark beauty...Oh, just stop it, Serena. He's not even your real husband. Why should you be worried some other girl might catch his attention. Besides, isn't Rita with Andrew?

Comforted slightly but the thought Serena continued to walk around, greeting people.

"Hello, are you enjoying yourself?" Serena asked a guest she didn't recognize. She was probably one of Darien's. The woman was standing against the wall and looking around herself. It didn't look like she was making any attempt to talk to people and Serena felt a bit sorry for her.

"I'm fine, darling," the woman drawled. She had dark red-brown hair and the most darkest eyes. She was deadly pale and wore a revealing black dress which contrasted with her skin color.

And I thought I was pale, Serena marveled as she took in the seriously white skin.

"Wonderful," Serena said cheerfully and began to walk away when the woman reached out and caught her arm. Serena turned and looked at her questioningly. "Yes?"

"Your Serena Knight, correct?" The woman asked.

"Yes," Serena said slowly, nodding.

"Darien's new bitch I see," the woman said angrily.

Serena gasped and all color drained out of her face. She tore her arm away and took a step back. "What did you just call me?"

"I called you Darien's new bitch. It looks like he only married you for your money, not your beauty. If you had any that its," the woman said bitterly and fiercely.

"Who are you?" Serena demanded.

"Melissa Beryl," the woman spat.

"Beryl??" Serena demanded. "Who invited you?"

"Why, your Darien of course. Didn't you know we were a pair once?" Beryl asked acidly.

They were drawing attention from all over the room as it quieted to see why the hostess was so pale and arguing with a mean looking guest.

"I don't care if you were a pair, I do not tolerate people who calls me a bitch," Serena said darkly. "Now leave."

"Leave? Honey, I was invited," Beryl said, amused. She leaned closer, giving Serena whiff of her horrible perfume, and smiled. "And I'm going to stay until I get my lovely Darien back."

"He isn't yours, Beryl," Serena said darkly. "So leave."

Beryl laughed and shook her head.

"As hostess of this party I order you to leave!" Serena shouted commandingly.

"Is there a problem?" Andrew asked warily walking up to Serena protectively. He knew about Beryl and her obsession with Darien. How did she get into the party without anyone knowing?

"Yes, there is a problem," Serena said angrily. But then she calmed herself with amazing grace and held her head high. "This woman has insulted me and refuses to leave. Do you know her, Andrew?"

"Of course, he does," Beryl said with dark amusement. "He knows all about Darien's conquests. But I wasn't a conquest, no, I was something much more permanganate. That was, until you came along and took him before I could even have the chance of winning his heart." She was breathing hard now with all the anger pent up. "Whore." Suddenly Beryl lashed out and slapped Serena.

Serena collapsed to the ground from the force of it.

"Bitch!" Andrew growled as he dropped down beside his best friend's wife and helped her up to her feet. "Leave!"

"No, your not the host. Darien is and I'll only leave when he says so," Beryl said firmly.

"Beryl, I order you to leave," a dark menacing voice said from behind the crowd. They parted and allowed Darien Knight to pass through. His face a storm of angry emotions and his eyes showed pure hatred. Beryl staggered at the weight of it being thrown at her. Then it was all gone and Darien stood there with no emotions showing in his handsome face or expressional eyes. They were dead looking and that frightened Beryl even more.

"Darien, you don't want me gone. You love me, Darien," Beryl said pitifully as she walked over to the man she thought she loved and placed her hand on his arm. "Please, Darien. Leave this whore and come to me."

Darien looked down at her and roughly shook her off. She stepped back in horror.

"You touch my wife ever again and you'll regret it," Darien threatened, his anger behind his words, making it an incredible force.

Beryl withered under his glare. But she gathered all what was left of her dignity and held her head high.

"Fine! If you want it that way! But you'll regret it, Darien. Serena is nothing compared to me and you'll realize that soon enough. When you do you come to me." With that said Beryl whirled around and stomped out of the house.

Darien rushed over to Serena and helped her to her feet. She weaved a bit and leaned up against him. She had a deep red mark against her pale cheek.

"Serena, are you all right?" Darien asked softly as he held her small frame against his own larger one.

"I'm just a little dizzy," Serena said wryly. She looked up at Darien with pained blue eyes. "Who was she?"

"Melissa Beryl," Darien said with vehemence and anger.

"What was that about her and you being a pair and loving each other?" Serena asked.

Darien looked down at Serena and shook his head. "It was a mistake made long ago that I regret. Now, come and sit down." He led Serena over to a chair beside a window and sat her down.

"Serena!" Amy rushed over to her best friend with Greg in tow nad dropped down beside her. "Are you all right? Oh my goodness, look at that mark!" Anger boiled in Amy as she examined her friend carefully. "Your going to have a bruise."

Serena winced. "Great. I hope I didn't ruin anyone's Christmas with this problem."

"Serena! A woman just attacked you, worry about yourself for once!" Amy ordered.

Serena smiled weakly, then winced. "I guess so."

"We can get some ice for it. Then later we'll boil up an egg," Amy said professionally. Although the egg part kind of threw it off.

"Why an egg?" Serena asked.

"It helps slow the swelling," Amy explained. "An old wives' trick. Don't worry. It really works."

"All right," Serena said, nodding. She looked over to Darien who was still looking very angry and worried. "Thank you, Darien. If you didn't come on time I don't know what would have happened."

"I'm sorry that had to happen to you, Serena," Darien said sincerely. Each time he looked at the horrible red mark on Serena's beautiful skin the more he wanted to murder Melissa Beryl. What right did she have hitting his wife? Anger burned through him as he kneeled down beside Serena and took her hand into his own and held it.

Serena looked at Darien who was now eye to eye with her and smiled. "Thanks, Darien. For worrying."

"Hey, did you two realize that your underneath the mistletoe?" Amy asked, blushing.

Serena and Darien both looked up slowly. Amy was right, there was the mistletoe. It hung innocently above them but held more intimate meanings. They blushed and looked at each other for a moment before looking away.

Amy stood up and took Greg's hand. "I think we better leave them alone." She turned and walked off. Half way across the room she bumped into Raye.

"I'm going to kill her!" Raye raged as she stood there. "Beryl had no right whatsoever to hit Serena!"

"Where have you been?" Amy asked, confused that the girl didn't rush to Serena's side from what Serena had said of Raye's protectiveness.

"With Setsuna and Jadeite. She and Jadeite's been trying to calm me down," Raye said through gritted teeth. "It didn't work though. I'm going to tear that woman piece by piece and then..." She trailed off, thinking of horrible ways to kill Melissa Beryl. "Where's Serena? I want to see her."

"She's with Darien. But don't go to them just yet. They're having a private moment," Amy said, blushing.

"Private--?" Raye looked over to Serena and Darien and her eyes widened in delight. "I knew putting that mistletoe there was right."

"Come on, let's leave them to their own. Possibly they'll fall in love," Amy said, smiling. Greg chuckled and slipped his arm around Amy's waist and held her tight.

Raye nodded and they disappeared to search for Setsuna and Jadeite to tell her about everything that was happening.

Meanwhile, Serena and Darien are still looking at each other and wondering if they should kiss.

"We don't have to do it if we don't want to," Serena said, shrugging. "I mean, it's only a silly tradition..."

Darien looked at Serena's beautiful, kissable lips and felt desire burn inside of him. It was stronger than the anger and hatred he felt towards Beryl. He reached out and gently touched her bruised cheek. Then he brought her close and kissed her gently. He didn't want to hurt her in anyway as he kissed her.

Serena gasped softly as she felt Darien's gently lips kiss her own. She closed her eyes and gave into the kiss without protest. She felt a wonderful warm feeling flood her as she enjoyed the wonderful kiss he was giving her. It was nothing compared to the kiss that she was given on her wedding day. She slipped her arms around Darien's neck and held him close as the kiss continued. She ignored the pain in her cheek as she continued to kiss Darien with all her might.

Holding Serena's small body close, Darien kissed her with a little bit more pressure. He loved the feeling of her soft body against his own. She felt so perfect and right against him. It was wonderful. Her scent teased him and caused him to desire her even more.

Finally they pulled apart. Serena was breathing shallowly as she gazed deep into Darien's blue eyes. She smiled shyly and blushed a deep crimson red as she released her hold around his neck and moved back a little.

Already feeling the loss of her arms around his neck, Darien released Serena and smiled as well.

~*~

Later that night Serena was singing happily to herself as she prepared for bed. She smiled as she slipped on a long white night gown and skipped over to bed. She turned off the lights and snuggled underneath the covers. She sighed happily and closed her eyes.

The kiss she and Darien had shared was wonderful. She had been left in a daze after the kiss. She didn't remember much afterwards but she did know that Darien didn't leave her side at all.

Snuggling even deeper into her pillow and covers, Serena sighed and slipped into a peaceful sleep.

~*~

I have a habit with ending the story with Serena sleeping, don't I? I guess I like it since it's the end of the day, right? Yeah, well, thanks to all of those who e-mailed me. Those are the letters that keep me going with this story. Usually I never finish a story.
