Chapter 4

Plop!

Heero raised one dark brown eyebrow and looked up slowly to find a white plastic bag with red Chinese lettering on it, emitting delicious smells of what could be kung pao chicken but he really couldn't be sure. He looked up higher and met the smiling face of Chang Wufei.

"Hi!" the Chinese man greeted. "It's kung pao chicken with ma po tofu--which is kinda spicy but I don't think you'll mind it too much--and some rice, as well as complimentary soup! I don't know what the soup is though since they're always surprising the customer every day. But I have a sneaking suspicion it's bitter melon soup with pork. Which is pretty good once you get used to the bitterness." All of this had been said with one breath and Wufei looked pretty pleased with himself about it as well.

"What's this for?" Heero asked, shaking his head slightly as he slowly placed his expensive silver pen he had been using down on the paper scattered table. He had been working on a report--again--but this seemed much more interesting than...whatever the report had been about.

"Weelll...You said you weren't eating lunch and I kinda felt bad for you--soooo...I bought you lunch." Wufei flushed slightly. His dark elven eyes were turned down slightly in embarassment and some shyness. "I hope I'm not intruding..."

Heero didn't know what to think. He couldn't come up with the right reaction since, quite frankly, no one had ever done something this...well, nice!..for him before. Or at least not someone he had just met or any of his assistants. He couldn't remember a single time any of his assistants didn't do anything other than what he told them to. It was touching how Wufei cared whether or not he ate and he couldn't help but smile warmly at the young man.

"Thank you," he said after a strange moment. Wufei visibly relaxed and his easy, warm smile came back.

"It was no trouble at all! Enjoy!" With that said, the cute Chinese man turned and walked back to his own cubicle outside.

Heero couldn't wipe the smile off his face as he reached out and untied the easy knot made at the top of the plastic bag. He then began to take everything out and laid it down on his desk--after he pushed all the important files out of the way of course. He opened the boxes and unwrapped the chopstick. Then, suddenly feeling famished, he began eating.

"Come on, Fei! Everyone's gonna be there," Duo pleaded as he clutched at his best friend's arm. They were in the market buying some groceries since Duo was low and Wufei knew his friend enough that if no one bought Duo's groceries for him the poor American would starve to death--or end up getting sick of all the microwavable food packed away somewhere in a closet or something.

"Who's everyone?" Wufei asked as he dropped a box of CornFlakes into the shopping cart.

"Oh, you know! Everyone! Movie stars, singers...Everyone! People are excited about seeing Haruka Tenoh and me battle it out on the race track. It's a big event. You can't just miss it because you bought a new manga to read," Duo pointed out. He knew this would hit a mark since, well, Wufei *always* had a new manga to read.

Wufei's high cheekbones flushed slightly. "Hey!"

"Please..." Duo begged. "I really want you there."

"But I always go..."

"It's not like you have a hot date or something," Duo said dryly as he snatched a bag of Double-Stuffed Oreos and dumped it into the cart before Wufei could stop him. They continued walking slowly down the aisle.

Wufei shot his friend an annoyed look. "And what if I do?"

"Do you?"

"...no..."

"See! Please! I'm your best friend and I want you to see me kick Tenoh's ass," Duo said, grinning like a maniac that he was.

"It's nice to see you're pretty confident about this race," Wufei remarked archly.

Duo looked annoyed for a moment but an idea probably had bloomed nastily in his psychotic mind because the next thing Wufei knew he was wrapped in a tight embrace with Duo shouting in his ear to attend the race or he'll do something drastic.

Properly mortified by the spectacle that they were making in the middle of aisle 6, Wufei quickly agreed, his elegant tone of bronze now an unflattering dark red from embarassment.

"Duo! I can't believe you!" Wufei exclaimed, looking pained. He looked around the place and saw that there was only one real witness of the scene. He had been in the motion of picking up a box of oatmeal which was still suspended in his hand. The green-eyed man smiled when he met Wufei's eyes and raised an eyebrow before disappearing around to the next aisle. All Wufei wanted to do was bury his face in his hands and die.

"It worked, didn't it? And I really want you to be there," Duo said, smiling sweetly. "Honestly, you need to get out more."

"You tell me that every time and I still don't understand why. I mean, I get out, right? I go to work," Wufei said, shrugging one shoulder.

Duo rolled his eyes. "That's not going on, Fei. That's just going to work."

"I don't get it."

"You need adventure! Excitement! You need to learn how to make life interesting. I mean, there's gotta be more to life than mangas, your bag of sweets and watching anime."

Wufei 'hmphed'.

"See! Even you realize that. Come on, this'll be a fun experience!"

"Why are you still convincing me? I'm already going," Wufei grumbled as he grabbed some cans of soup off the shelf.

"Because you don't look excited and I want you to be excited."

"I am excited."

"Yeah, right, and I'm straight."

Wufei raised an eyebrow. "You're not."

"Exactly my point!" Duo exclaimed dramatically. He suddenly stopped, looking composed. Then he threw Wufei a sidelong look. "Sooo...Met any cute guys lately?"

"Duo!"

"Zechs Merquise, huh..." Duo mused as they got into the car. The American had managed to bother Wufei *so* much that the Chinese man finally gave in and told him about the handsome business man he had met on the elevator. Although he couldn't help but feel a bit excited as well. Zechs Merquise *was* someone very nice to talk about after all.

"Yeah," Wufei said, feeling a little embarassed yet pleased at the same time as he slid into the passenger seat. Duo always insisted in driving, no matter who's car it was. The braided man was absolutely obsessed with driving.

"He sounds really familiar...I wonder..." Duo stuck the key into the ignition and started up the car (which was Wufei's).

"Wonder what?" Wufei asked as he pulled a sucker from his pocket and ripped off the wrapping. He shoved the wrapper into his pocket and stuck the sucker into his mouth. He sucked on it for a moment, savoring the sweetness of the candy while Duo tried to remember whatever he was trying to remember.

"Ah-ha!" Duo suddenly exclaimed, looking victorious as he slapped the steering wheel a bit. "He's gonna be at the race! In fact, he's sponsoring it!" He grinned and looked over at Wufei who was currently choking dramatically on his sucker.

Sunday...Race Track....

"Tell me again, why I'm here," Heero deadpanned as he and Trowa pushed through the large crowd of people who were milling around the concessions and gift shops. They were all chattering excitedly, each trying to carry their voice over another's, making the entire scene almost unbearably loud. Their topic centered around racing, Duo Maxwell and Tenoh Haruka. The two were the best racers anyone had ever had the pleasure to know and everyone was wondering who was going to win.

"Because Zechs invited you. You know he likes you to go out more and I, truthfully, also want to see this race. It's pretty big," Trowa replied, his usually low and quiet voice straining over the buzzing around them.

"I could be getting some work done right now..." Heero sighed.

"You always work. Even *I* I know when to stop and I know I'm pretty bad. You're just worse. This is going to be good for you." Trowa smiled and took in the casual choice of clothing Heero had picked out. Instead of his usual gray suits, he was wearing a white collar shirt over blue jeans with yellow boots. It blended in nicely with everyone else yet Heero still maintained an air about him that said he was a serious person and didn't take things lightly. Or maybe it was the strange intensity of his eyes.

"Nag, nag, nag," Heero griped. Trowa chose to ignore him. They made their way over to the stands and found their seats, which were pretty close to the track. Zechs was one of the major sponsors of the race and that gave him some special privileges like giving away good tickets to anyone he wanted.

After some jostling and pushing, they finally reached their seats. Heero sat down with a sigh and looked around himself with his dark brown hair falling into his eyes, giving him the appearance of glaring yet he wasn't. They sat there quietly, just taking in their surroundings while waiting for the race to take place. It was noisy, crowded and full of life. Something that didn't appeal to either Heero or Trowa but at least the latter tried to get used to it. Heero just felt like screaming and running out of there. Of course that was beyond his usual tact of dignity so he didn't do it. But he was damned close to. Places like these annoyed him to hell.

Just when it seemed everything was getting worse--there were more and more people piling into their seats as the race got close to beginning--something happened that made Heero wondered whether or not that gods were against or for him. It was such a strange blessing/curse. Or maybe those words were too strong.

"Excuse me, thank you, excuse me, thank you, excuse me, thank you...excuse me! I'm trying to get through here...Thank you!" A familiar slim figure clumsily but surely made his way over to them, dressed in a white shirt and black pants, looking slightly flushed and annoyed.

Heero immediately recognized Wufei--who could miss such a person?--and he was half-tempted to just sink into the ground. What was better than having your employee see you in a place like this? He was a business man, responsible, orderly, a leader. Those kinds of people didn't necessarily belong at the race track...But alas, it was too late and poor Heero could do nothing about it. (*snicker*)

"Boy, it's hot out here..."

A cool breeze of a light scented cologne assualted Heero's senses as Wufei plopped down beside him in the empty seat at his right. Accidentally, Wufei knocked his elbow into Heero's shoulder.

"I'm sor--Mr. Yuy!" Wufei exclaimed, shocked. He blinked and stared at his boss who was staring back at him with a strange look. "I didn't expect you to be here..."

"Yes, well, I was invited," Heero said shortly.

Wufei opened his mouth a fraction but then snapped it shut and nodded.

"Heero, aren't you going to be polite and introduce me to your friend?" Trowa asked behind the Japanese man. His voice was lightly laced with amusement.

Heero turned and glared at his friend for a moment before turning back to Wufei. "Wufei, meet Trowa. Trowa, meet Wufei. He's my assistant."

Wufei reached out to shake Trowa's hand, his bare arm brushing against Heero's for a moment. Heero had to suppress the strange feeling that touch elicited.

"Hello, Trowa. It's good to meet you." Wufei frowned for a moment as he leaned back into his seat. "You look familiar..."

"I believe I saw you at the supermarket?" Trowa said. He couldn't suppress the smile that came to his lips at the horrified expression on Wufei's face.

"You two met before?" Heero asked, raising an eyebrow. He didn't understand what a meeting at the market could cause Wufei to turn such a strange shade of red.

Wufei recovered a bit, although he still looked a bit uncomfortable. "Ah...you can say that."

"It was just a brief thing," Trowa added.

Wufei nodded although he wasn't sure whether or not Trowa was laughing at him...What a strange man. Of course the entire day had been a bit hectic. He had woken up late to go to the race and had spent half the time awake rushing back and forth in his apartment making sure he got everthing he needed. Then he had almost forgotten to lock up before leaving his apartment in the rush to get out. Traffic had been almost like hell until he finally got pass the accident that had happened. After that everything went pretty well. Of course, finding his seats had been a bit hard and he had more than once tripped over random feet while getting there. He was also hot and a bit annoyed. He didn't like crowds and he currently didn't like Duo so much for dragging him out...

But he had agreed, so what else could he do?

"I'm glad you all made it," a smooth, familiar tenor said behind Wufei.

Wufei turned around. His eyes went wide when he saw Zechs Merquise standing there for a charming smile on his face.

Suddenly, the day seemed much better.

Short, short, short. I know. Leave me alone, I just ran out of ideas. Give me a few days...And don't kill me! *sobs* I'm young...
