Wufei's Love Charm

By DragonMage

Chapter 2

"YOU!"

Wufei gasped and almost dropped the manga he was holding. He didn't though but just stood there and stared at the seriously pissed off Heero Yuy. <OMG! He's my new boss?! The gods are very, very cruel,> he thought despairingly.

"What are you doing here?" Heero demanded, standing up from behind his desk as he leaned over and glared at the other man.

"My name is Chang Wufei, I'm your--"

"New assistant," Heero finished grimly.

Wufei nodded. "Yeah."

Heero closed his eyes and dropped his head. <Why? Why me? Why couldn't I get someone else? He spilled soda on my folder and didn't even apologize! How am I gonna deal with an assistant who isn't even going to be polite at least?>

Wufei didn't know whether or not to laugh or to scream and curse. He was truly caught in between as he stood there, contemplating the amusing situation he was in.

"Uh..um...I guess I should get to work," Wufei stuttered.

Heero looked up at the fidgeting man. He was playing with his manga book and looking anywhere but at Heero.

"All right. Work," he said, nodding as he walked over to a pile that his last assistant had left behind. He picked it up and walked over to Wufei, dropping them into the other man's arms.

"Oh, shit, what the hell are these?" Wufei grunted as he adjusted to the weight and held on to them tightly.

"These are some reports you've got to sort out for me. Since you were hired because you already know how to do this I won't have to tell you how," Heero said, nodding sharply at Wufei.

"Of course," Wufei said, nodding. Then he turned and left the room.

Heero reached up and rubbed the bridge of his nose. Could this day get any better? He turned and walked back over to his desk. He sat down heavily and began to repair the damaged report. He picked it up a sheet and began to wave it around, causing something that had been sticking to it to fall off. It floated in the air for a moment before landing silently on Heero's desk.

Heero dropped the paper and picked up the small envelope. He leaned closer and read the words smoothly written on it. <Love charm? How the heck did this get in the folder?>

~*~

Wufei sat down heavily at the desk he had been assigned near Heero's office and sighed. He stared at the pile of work that the last assistant had left behind and glared at it. Maybe, just maybe, if he glared at it long enough he could burn it all. He pulled open a drawer and started looking through it. When he had first came to the office to get his desk and set everything up he had also stored away one very important thing that he needed to get through the day.

"Ah-ha!" he whispered triumphantly underneath his breath as he pulled out a See's lollipop. He ripped off the cover and stuffed the lollipop into his mouth, savoring the chocolatey goodness. He smiled and got down to work. He picked up the first folder and opened it. Then he picked up his pen, some paper clips and a stapler and started sorting out the mess to make it easier to refer to.

He was half way done and on his second sucker when it was time for lunch. He pushed back the last folder and stretched tiredly. He pulled the sucker out of his mouth and licked his lips, enjoying the wonderful chocolate taste. He stood up and shoved the sucker back into his mouth and grabbed his money. He was half way out of the door when Heero's voice stopped him.

He turned around and pulled the sucker out of his mouth. "Huh?"

Heero looked exasperated. "I asked you if you're done with the work yet."

"Almost," Wufei said, turning back around and heading for the door. "Don't worry about it! I'll get it done."

Then he was gone.

Heero glared at the closed door and shook his head. He turned around and walked back into his office. He grabbed his wallet and coat and left the office as well. He had to meet his friend, Trowa Barton, for lunch.

"Hey, Fei!" Duo shouted as he waved his friend over to the table he had saved for them at the cafe.

Wufei smiled and threw away the stick to his sucker and slid into the seat across from his friend.

"How was the day at work?" Duo asked as he picked up his coffee and took a sip.

"It was all right," Wufei said, nodding. "But I don't think I did something good today."

"Really? The Great Wufei did something bad today? Tsk, tsk, Fei-Fei," Duo teased.

"Shut up! I'm serious. I bumped into my boss before I started work and I spilled soda all over his folder," Wufei said, looking embarrassed.

"Let me guess. You were reading manga?" Duo asked, cocking an eyebrow knowingly.

Wufei sighed and nodded, concentrating his attention on the table surface.

"I told you drinking and reading is dangerous, Fei," Duo said, shaking his head.

"Is that suppose to be a joke?"

"Whatever. It must have been a real shock to find out who your boss was," Duo said, smirking.

"Of course! I can't believe I did that," Wufei sighed as he buried his face in his arms.

"Hey, it was a mistake. No biggy," Duo said with an easy shrug.

"No big deal? He hates me, now!"

"Aw, come on. You're over exaggerating."

"I'm not! I hate this. I think I should quit."

"Wufei, you can't quit because you started off bad with your boss," Duo said, shaking his head.

"But I don't want to deal with him," Wufei half pouted.

"Come on, you're not afraid. Are you?" Duo asked challengingly.

"I'm not," Wufei said defensively.

"Then stick with the job. Who knows? Things might even look up once you guys get over this," Duo said as he swirled his coffee around his cup.

"I don't know. He looks like one of those people who hold grudges," Wufei said, frowning.

"Like you?"

"I do not!"

"Do too!"

"Not!"

"Too!"

"Not!"

"Too!"

"NOT!"

Duo burst out laughing. He shook his head as he tried desperately to stop laughing when he caught sight of Wufei's glare but he couldn't help it. Wufei was so stiff sometimes and at other times he would act like a complete child. There was no telling how he would handle something.

"That was so stupid," Wufei said, leaning back in his seat and crossing his arms.

"Well, we don't exactly bring out the best in each other," Duo chuckled.

"No, we don't, do we?" Wufei agreed. He and Duo had met on bad terms. They were juniors in high school and Wufei had been walking down the hall with a sucker in his mouth and a manga in his hands. He had bumped into Duo causing the American to drop his books. It was a small thing but it erupted into a fight. They were both stuck in detention with each other and hated every single moment of it. Strangely, they became friends when a bunch of assholes decided to pick on Wufei. Wufei fought back and Duo joined him. They both got hurt and were sentenced even more detention and almost got kicked out if the principal's daughter hadn't had a crush on Duo, but ever since then they had been best friends.

"But hey, enough with talk. Let's eat," Duo said, waving the waitress over.

They quickly gave their orders and Duo began to talk about his day at the track.

"Man, I watched that Haruka girl race and she's good! I finally have some decent competition," Duo said happily as they waited for the food to come.

"That's good but don't you want to win, Duo?" Wufei asked while playing with the corner of a napkin.

"Sure I wanna win but I haven't had real competition in a long time so this is really exciting," Duo said, smiling. "And I hear she also has a girlfriend. Some violinist named Michiru."

"Michiru is very good. In fact, I have one of her CDs," Wufei said, nodding. "Do you want me to lend it to you?"

"Naw, you know I don't go for that classical stuff," Duo said, wrinkling his nose. "Give me rock any day."

"But it's so loud."

"That's why I love it."

Wufei was tempted to roll his eyes.

Soon their food came and they started eating. The silence didn't last for a while since Duo immediately began to talk about the upcoming race and a party that he was being invited to. Wufei listened diligently and nodded when it was appropriate. He didn't understand why Duo wanted to be involved in such a dangerous career like racing. But then Duo went parachuting when he was of legal age and dragged Wufei along for the ride. Then there was the time when they went bungy-jumping. Wufei thought he would have a heart attack when Duo pushed him off the side of the bridge when he refused to jump after losing his legs. Duo had always went for the dangerous sports, never the safe ones like basketball or golf. At least in those games you kept your feet on the ground most of the time and you were a few thousand feet up in the sky.

"Hey, is that love charm working?" Duo asked mischievously as he wiped his mouth and grinned at Wufei, his violet eyes sparkling.

Wufei glared at Duo and swallowed his mouthful of soup. "No, and I don't think it's gonna work."

"Oh, have a little faith, Wufei. It'll happen," Duo teased encouragingly.

"Shut up, Duo," Wufei said, as he dipped his bread into the soup and popped it into his mouth.

"Don't you worry, Fei, that charm'll kick in and soon you'll have your own love right next to you," Duo said, winking.

"What about you, Duo?" Wufei asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Hey, I wanted a luck charm not a love charm. Besides, I have better things to think of rather than love."

"Then why did you make me do it?"

"Because you need it. Have you ever been out on a date before, Wufei?"

"No."

"See!"

"And I don't need to go out on a date with someone! It's not important."

"Wufei, you need to stop thinking about working and start thinking about getting a love life," Duo sighed.

"Why?"

"You need to loosen up!"

"Why?"

"Stop sounding like that little girl on that wacky show on TV," Duo threatened.

"Okay, lady," Wufei said, mimicking Mindy from Animaniacs.

Duo sweatdropped.

"Here, let me pay for the food," Heero insisted as he pulled out his wallet from his pocket.

"I invited you out, Heero, let me pay," Trowa Barton said, shaking his head as he pulled out his own wallet.

"It's all right," Heero said as he pulled out some money and dropped it on the table.

Trowa raised an eyebrow when he saw the charm fall out of Heero's pocket. He bent down and picked it up. He looked at it, he didn't know how to read Chinese but it was kind of obvious it was a charm.

"What's this?" he asked handing the charm back to Heero.

Heero took the charm and quickly pocketed it. "Nothing. Just something I found in one of my reports."

"A charm?"

"Love charm actually, I think the one who wrote the report was a woman. I have to find out who she is and give it back to her," Heero said, shrugging.

"I see," Trowa said with a small sparkle in his forest green eyes.

"What's that suppose to mean?" Heero demanded, irked that his friend was looking at him with the Look. The all-knowing, all-powerful look that Trowa got when he knew something and didn't feel like sharing.

"Nothing," Trowa said innocently.

"Nothing. Nothing he says. Trowa," Heero growled.

"Fine. Are you sure she just accidentally left it in there?"

"What are you implying?"

"Maybe someone's after you, Heero," Trowa said, smiling slightly.

"Oh, come on. A woman?" Heero said, looking a bit weird. "You know I don't go for women."

"Hmm...I know. Isn't that a disappointment for the female population?" Trowa said thoughtfully.

"Sure," Heero said, nodding as he picked up his coat and slipped it on. Then they left the restaurant to brave the biting cold of winter in California.
