Chapter 2

Zechs Merquise sighed as he walked up the steps to the apartment number he had been given by Chang Wufei. He looked down at the white paper, at the neat handwriting there and looked up at the numbers. He walked along the balcony-like walkway, checking the apartment numbers as he went. The warm wind blew quietly, ruffling his long white blonde hair. He finally came upon the apartment he was looking for and stopped. Reaching out, he knocked on the door.

The apartment was in one of the better neighborhoods, although not as good as the one Zechs came from. The tall man always wondered why Wufei never moved to the safer neighborhoods; he certainly could afford it. But Wufei had just told him that it was easier to work when he was in the neighborhood. Zechs had to agree it was convenient but he could never bear to live among the poor, it reminded him just too sharply about how well he had it off.

He remembered the night he had first met Chang Wufei. He was also a Cannibal hunter except he didn't possess the strength and speed the Chinese man did. But he had the weapons and the skill to be able to hunt down Cannibals and take them out. He had been trying to hunt down a Cannibal that got away from him when he stumbled upon Wufei taking out three Cannibals with his sword. A long elegant thing that seemed to carry a life of its own as it swiped through the air, blood flying and bodies dropping around him.

He had been startled, to say the least, that was another Cannibal hunter out there besides him. But it had been a nice discovery. After getting over the rough introduction between them, they began to work together in a distant sort of way. They would trade information, if they heard anything important that concerned the other, but they fought alone. Wufei preferred and so did Zechs. And each had their own 'turf' so there was no confusion and accidentally bumping into each other.

It had been a year since they first met and Zechs had just discovered something that demanded Wufei's attention--and maybe, if the Chinese man allowed it--they would work together to get rid of the problem. It would only be wise since it was a very big problem.

Waiting patiently, Zechs wondered just when the door would open when he saw the curtain move for a brief moment. Then the door swung open and Wufei was standing there with his hair down. The Chinese man was dressed in a white dress shirt with blue jeans and he was barefoot.

"Zechs?" Wufei blinked. "What...What are you doing here?"

"I need to talk to you about something, Wufei," Zechs said, his voice conveying the importance of what he had to say.

"Come in. My daughter's in the kitchen, eating breakfast. You're going to have to tell her that you're an artist friend of mine," Wufei said quietly as he stepped aside to let Zechs inside.

"An artist friend?" Zechs repeated curiously. They *had* been working together for a year, but everything was always strictly business. He had never learned of Wufei's private life. He had never even known Wufei had a daughter!

"Yes, well, my daughter believes I'm an artist," Wufei said, shrugging as he closed the door. He looked Zechs in the eye. "Sometimes it's best if people didn't know what I did. It keeps them safe."

Zechs nodded. "Of course." He smiled cheerfully. "Does your daughter look like you?"

"Ah, you'll be surprised," Wufei said with a small smile. And it was the first time Zechs had really seen Wufei smile. The Chinese man was always so...stiff and serious about his work as a Cannibal hunter.

"Papa? Are you talking to Ms. Noin and Ms. Sally? You have to tell them I have no school today."

Zechs could hear the sounds of a chair being scraped back before a little girl around the age of nine appeared at the kitchen doorway. She had long reddish blond hair that fell to her elbows and wide, deep blue cat-eyes that stood out against her pale, milky skin. She was tall, thin, and almost frail like except she radiated strength and confidence. In short, she looked nothing like the Chinese man standing beside Zechs.

"This is your daughter, Wufei?" Zechs asked, looking over at the other man before turning his eyes back to Mariemeia. "She's beautiful."

Wufei almost smirked. He looked over at Mariemeia who was staring at Zechs with no small amount of curiosity.

"Mariemeia, let me introduce you to Zechs Merquise. He's an artist friend of mine. He's coming over to discuss business with me," Wufei introduced smoothly. "Come here, darling, and say hi."

Mariemeia smiled shyly and walked over to the two men. She stopped in front of Zechs and smiled up at the man before bowing slightly at the waist. She straightened, her smile wider.

"Papa taught me that," she said proudly.

"Your Papa is skilled in many things, isn't he, Mariemeia?" Zechs asked.

"A lot! He's so good at so many things." Mariemeia turned adoring eyes to Wufei. "Papa, do you want me to go to my room while you and Mr. Merquise 'discuss business'?"

Wufei chuckled and nodded. "Thank you, Mariemeia. That would be sweet of you. Do you want some ice cream while you're in there?"

"Please?" Mariemeia asked hopefully.

"All right." Wufei turned to Zechs. "Give me a moment, will you please?"

Zechs nodded. "Of course." Then he watched as Wufei lead his daughter back into the kitchen to make the ice cream he promised. Zechs looked around the place, wondering how this warm man here could be the same Chang Wufei he met on the streets of the city at night while hunting Cannibals. <Fascinating, he's so different. It must be his 'daughter' that makes him different. She is a sweet girl; she'd make anyone kind. She looks so familiar too...and that name. I know I've heard it somewhere.>

Zechs wandered over to the fireplace where two swords hung there, criss-crossed with their tassels hanging onto the mantle of the fireplace where there were some random photos and figurines sitting peacefully. The swords were beautiful, artfully made with supreme care and adoration. Zechs had to admit Wufei had good taste in his weapons.

Taking a good look at the photos, Zechs found Mariemeia and Wufei together many times, doing random things. One depicted them at a birthday party, another at the park and another at a school. There were also photos with two women included, one with ginger blonde hair and another with dark blue. Both of them were smiling broadly, their eyes sparkling with something akin to mischief, as if both of them were used to getting into it.

Here laid proof of a totally different and contrasting life that Wufei led. It warmed Zechs, somewhat, to know that Wufei lead a good life during the day while risking his life at night. He wondered what would happen to Mariemeia if Wufei ever got killed while fighting a Cannibal one day. Would she go into the custody of those two women?

"She's in her bedroom now. We can talk," Wufei said behind him.

Zechs turned around and nodded. They walked into the kitchen where the evidence of breakfast being eaten there still remained. Wufei quickly cleared the table and placed everything in the sink. He then sat down and gestured for Zechs to do the same.

"This whole apartment is proofed so no one can listen to our conversations," Wufei said lightly. "Now what's so important that it brings you to this side of the city? I thought you'd call me to your fancy mansion and discuss it there."

Zechs smiled, brushing off Wufei's frankness. He was used to it, really. "I didn't want to draw any attention to myself. I have been lately. The Cannibals are starting to grow in numbers and they're more relentless. They're not backing out of fights anymore. Do you know how hard it is to come home to a house full of people with torn clothing? It's so inconvenient. I almost envy your solitary life--well, save Mariemeia."

Wufei rubbed his neck to ease the tension there. "Get to the point, Zechs."

"Fine. There's going to be a major attack tonight in your part of the city. They're going to get as many victims as they can, and quickly. I wanted to warn you because I don't want you to be taken off guard."

"Why are they such big attack now?" Wufei asked, frowning. "I mean, yes their numbers have increased dramatically but...Damn it. I hate it when they throw surprises like this. How did you hear of this attack?"

"One of my contacts learned of it while spying on a lair, east of City Hall. He said he overheard two of them talking about an almost full scale attack on the city to feed the new children they procured," Zechs told him. He looked Wufei in the eye. "Do you want help?"

"I'd be stupid not to ask for it." Wufei nodded gratefully. "Thank you, Zechs."

"You're welcome. We Cannibal hunters have to watch our backs, right?"

"Yes, of course. I have half a mind to contact the Corps and tell them what's going on..."

"Don't worry, once the alarms go off, they'll know. Remember, Wufei, we can't get involved with the Government. They'll only hold us back," Zechs said, shaking his head.

Wufei nodded in agreement. "You're right. We'll just take care of them until the Corps show up." He sighed heavily. "It's a good thing I restocked on my weaponry."

"That's good to hear. We're going to need all we can get."

"There's gonna be bloodshed tonight."

"When is there none?"

"Good point."

"Then I'll see you tonight, around six?"

"Yes."

"Wonderful." Zechs stood up and nodded at Wufei. "I'll show myself out." Then he turned and left.

Wufei stood up after the man was gone and made sure the doors were locked before checking on Mariemeia in her room. Her ice cream was done, the empty bowl on the floor, and she was sleeping peacefully on her bed. When he was sure she was fine, he walked over to the phone and called Sally.

"Hello? Yes, Sal, I need a favor. Can you baby-sit tonight?"

~*~

"Ack, filth. How can you live in such a place?" Zechs demanded as they passed by a garbage pile on the street. There were plenty of them all over the place. The city, was in fact, a waste. All the buildings were either burnt down a while ago, abandoned, or housed too many people at the same time. All of them were dilapidated and rotting down the foundations. None of them were safe but no one had enough money to restore the city back to its former glory. Or at least the Government wasn't willing to give up money to something that was "already falling apart and will never benefit from the money." Bastards, all of them.

Wufei shrugged as he walked beside the taller man. "You get used to it."

"Are you serious??"

Wufei rolled his eyes. "Zechs, this is why it's better you work in the more cleaner neighborhoods while I take care of the slums."

"I am so glad," Zechs drawled.

"You're such a rich boy."

"I am one."

"I don't know why you even got into this line of work."

Zechs 'hmphed'. "I wanted to see these kidnappings and killings stop."

"That's a good and noble drive but you could at least be able to take the conditions that go along with the job." Wufei stopped and looked around the darkened streets, ignoring the dripping sounds of the near-by sewers and the fouls smells wafting through the night air. The streets were wet--they were always wet--and the moonlight reflected off them, giving everything an eerie look. He looked over at Zechs. "When and where did you say they were going to attack?"

"Actually, around this area," Zechs said, looking around. He pulled out his gun and clicked the safety off. He looked around cautiously, his sharp ice blue eyes taking in everything around him.

Wufei pulled out his sword from its sheath clipped around his waist on a leather belt and held it expertly in both hands. That was when he heard the distant sounds of claws and bare skin on the concrete and stones of the streets. Soon the grounds were going to be wet by something other than water, he was sure of that.

"They're coming," Zechs murmured.

"Get ready. There's gonna be a blood bath."

Zechs grinned ferally. "Wonderful. I was hoping for one."

Wufei rolled his eyes and quickly moved into action as the first Cannibals showed up from their hiding places. He sliced into the first one he encountered and shoved the blade up into it reached the Cannibal's neck. Then he kicked it away, not even bothering to watch as it landed in a blood soaked heap on the floor. He was already preoccupied with another Cannibal running towards him. He kicked it in the face and sliced off its head just as the first reports from Zechs' gun sounded off the walls of the buildings around them.

Screams echoed in the air as two Cannibals leaped through windows and attacked families. Wufei knew this was going to happen. It always happened. No matter how much he fought they always managed to get a few innocents in the end. Sometimes he questioned why he even tried until he realized that by taking down Cannibals every time they showed up cut down on casualties.

"Fucking son of a bitch!" Zechs shouted angrily as he blew out the brains of a Cannibal.

"Wonderful choice of--shit!" Wufei quickly grabbed a few daggers out from his boots and threw them at a Cannibal that was starting to scale a wall to reach another family. The daggers embedded themselves deep in the Cannibal. It gasped wetly as it fell from the wall and landed with a loud 'thump' on the floor.

More gun shots sounded.

Zechs kicked a Cannibal in the stomach and was about to shoot it when another one leaped on top of him and began to claw away at his back and neck. He grunted and snapped his head back, smashing his skull into the Cannibal's nose. It hurt like a motherfucker but he ignored the pain blossoming and jabbed his elbow into the Cannibal's diaphragm, knocking its air out. He screamed in pain as the Cannibal dug its nails into his sides. He flipped his gun around and slammed into the Cannibal's side, then he opened fire.

Blood splashed against the walls and dripped onto the ground as the Cannibal had its insides blown out into Kingdom Come.

Shaking the Cannibal off, Zechs shot down another one who came close to swiping Wufei's ear off his head.

"Thanks!" the Chinese man, shouted as he did a neat roundhouse kick before stabbing the other Cannibal in the heart. Blood erupted and splashed onto the man's arms and chests. He grunted and kicked the Cannibal into an incoming one. The Cannibal caught the dead of its own and stumbled back a few steps just as Wufei leaped forward and sliced off its head. The head went rolling into a near-by sewer and sat there, staring unblinking at its surroundings.

Soon the Cannibals were retreating, knowing they were beaten...

Until reinforcements appeared.

"Bloody sonofabitch," Wufei breathed as he saw more appear out of nowhere. How were they going to fight through this one?? There were far too many, more than they had ever had to deal with together.

"Do you think we're going to get out of this alive?" Zechs asked conversationally as he dropped an empty clip onto the concrete a loud 'bang' and reloaded it before pulling out another gun.

"I have no idea," Wufei admitted as he pulled out a gun from a strap around his thigh. He slid his sword into its sheath and felt for some bombs lining his pockets.

"Well, it's been nice working with you," the platinum blonde man said cheerfully.

"Same here. Ready?"

"Let's go."

Wufei took a deep breath and started opening fire. His aim was perfect, taking down Cannibal after Cannibal. But no matter how many he took down more and more replaced them. He grabbed a few daggers from a belt around his chest and started throwing them while shooting at the same time. Beside him Zechs was almost casually taking down any Cannibal that came into site, the blonde man had an incredible dead shot.

But it wasn't long before both men were overwhelmed.

Kicking one firmly in the chest, Wufei opened fire and blew its brains out. Pulling out one of those small bombs he had bought from Li-Chen, he slammed it into the mouth of a near-by Cannibal and rolled away just as the body exploded. He smirked and started throwing the bombs into yawning mouths, or just smashing them into the Cannibal's body with a firm punch.

Soon there were body parts all over the place and blood was raining down on them. Zechs was cursing as blood slid down his face, almost blinding him, but he didn't stop shooting.

Wufei grunted as two Cannibals leaped on him at the same time. He was taken down to knees, his back burning as claws bore into them. Thankfully he wore a relatively thick jacket that protected him for a moment. He whipped out a dagger and slammed it into the thigh of one Cannibal and punched another in the balls. He stood up, shoving both of them off him and riddled their heads and chests with bullets before he danced back from another Cannibal trying to take off his arm. He threw a bomb at it and ran for it. Not a moment later there was a loud 'boom' and body parts were slamming into walls and sliding down with a wet slapping sound. Blood was smeared across his cheek but most of it wasn't his.

"Shit, shit, shit," the Chinese man cursed underneath his breath as he clutched at his right arm. One of the two previous Cannibals had taken a good swipe at him without him realizing it. His arm was now bleeding profusely, sliding down his arm and pooling in his curled hand where the gun hung loosely.

His adrenaline high allowed him to ignore the high and he was soon fighting again, kicking and punching as gun shots sounded sharply in the air. Zechs was emptying out his clips like a crazed man, dropping them carelessly onto the ground before quickly reloading with speed that sometimes impressed Wufei. For a man who was mortal, Zechs was pretty good at what he did.

"Watch out!"

Wufei whipped around and his eyes widened as a Cannibal came leaping at him, snarling and slashing with its claws. He didn't have enough time to move fast enough to get completely out of the way and the fucking thing managed to swipe his shoulder. He grunted in pain and prepared for another attack when the Cannibal suddenly dropped dead from where it stood. As the body fell over, Wufei caught a glimpse of a shorthaired man with a gun. Then he was gone, moving swiftly through the Cannibals, taking them down with one or two bullets before moving on to the other.

"Who the hell--?" Zechs cursed as three Cannibals attacked him from all sides. He sighed and started shooting; knowing his head was going to be taken off sometime tonight. He was prepared to die one two of the Cannibals fell over dead, a dagger sticking out of their backs. He took care of the last one.

"Cannibals are *so* annoying," a husky voice drawled from behind him.

Zechs whirled around and raised an eyebrow at the man standing before him. Or at least he thought he was a man. It was hard to tell with the long braid hanging down to the hips.

"Who are you?" the blonde man demanded.

"Friends. Oh, and behind you," the man said, looking over Zechs' shoulder.

"Shit, I hate these things!" Zechs whirled around and shot down the approaching Cannibal with a bullet in the heart. That was when he spotted four Cannibals attacking Wufei at once. "Wufei!!"

The Chinese man muffled a sharp gasp of pain as his gun was kicked out of his hand. He raised his arm and blocked another hit and kicked the Cannibal in the stomach just as another came up behind him and grabbed his neck, attempting to strangle him. He reached down for his dagger and stabbed the Cannibal in the stomach, but it wouldn't let go! He struggled, spots dancing in front of his eyes as his oxygen was cut off. He was exhausted, losing blood and he knew he wouldn't hold out for very long.

That was when his savior appeared. The man stabbed a Cannibal in the stomach with a dagger, tearing out its insides. He then flipped the dagger around and sent it flying into a random Cannnibal's heart.

"A little help here," Wufei gasped as he tried not to turn blue.

"Sorry," came the mutter. "Just tilt your head a little...Thank you." The man held up a gun and shot the Cannibal the head.

"Ugh," Wufei groaned as he felt to his knees, his hair soaked with blood and brain matter. He fell to his hands, coughing almost violently. A hand was pressed to his back before there was a steady thudding. Soon the gasping and coughing stopped. He shook his head and swallowed hard. "Shit..."

"Hey, you okay?" a low, soothing voice asked.

Wufei raised his head and stared right into Prussian blue eyes. "Who the hell are you?"

"My name's Heero. Are you okay? You don't look so good. In fact, you're bleeding. A lot."

"Thank you for pointing out the obvious," Wufei grounded out before he finally fainted from the exertion he had been pressing on his body.

Heero blinked and caught the man before he fell face first into the concrete ground. He lifted the man into his arms, surprised to find him very light and stood up. He turned and faced his companion who was blatantly flirting with the blonde man.

"Duo, stop it. He fainted. We have to get him somewhere for help," the Japanese man said, frowning.

Duo sighed. "He's hurt? Great." He turned to the blonde man. "Know any place?"

Zechs sighed heavily and ran his fingers through his stick hair. "We can't go to a local hospital. People aren't supposed to know about us...Hell, we'll go back to his apartment. His kid ain't home; she's with a sitter."

"Wonderful. Let's get moving," Duo said cheerfully.

It was then Zechs realized that all the Cannibals--except the ones dead--were gone. "What the fuck? Where did they go?"

Duo shrugged. "Does it matter? They're gone. Let's get your friend some help."

Zechs opened his mouth to further question the strange occurrence but shut his mouth when he realized Wufei *did* need help.

"All right, let's go."

As they were walking away from the dead littered street, they heard the sirens of approaching Corps soldiers.

~*~

Heero couldn't help but stare at Wufei's face. He had learned of the Chinese man's name from Zechs, who was currently grilling Duo on almost everything.

"Where are you from?" the blonde man was asking Duo.

"A city far from here. Hey, is it so strange to have Cannibal hunters besides you two?" Duo asked, looking offended. "We came here when we heard that the problems here were worse than the ones at home. All we wanted to do was help."

"What city?"

"Steel."

"That's not so far from here. You guys are really Cannibal hunters?"

"If we weren't, we wouldn't have been out there," was the saucy answer.

"How long have you two been doing this?"

"A little over a year."

"That's pretty good. So, you came here to help the current situation? How did you learn it was getting bad?"

"Word gets around. Look, why are you so suspicious?" Duo demanded.

Zechs raised an eyebrow. "Why wouldn't I be? Both Wufei and me have been doing this for a while and we haven't heard of any other Cannibal hunters. And you two seem to show up outta nowhere. I just need to know a few facts."

"What? Did you want a phone call in advance?" Duo asked, clearly irritated. He glared at the taller man. "I really don't know what your problem is but you could at least accept help when you have it."

"I don't trust you."

Duo snorted. "At least you're honest."

"We're agreeing on some level," Zechs agreed.

At that, Duo indelicately stuck his tongue out and blew a raspberry.

Heero tried not to roll his eyes. Those two just met and they were already bickering. Wonderful. They just made a great pair. He understood Zechs' mistrust. He wouldn't trust anyone who just showed up out of nowhere either. He just hoped they didn't kill each other over this petty argument. He just hoped Zechs started trusting them soon. It was hard to work with someone who didn't trust you.

"When are we going to reach Wufei's apartment? I don't think he can stand to lose any more blood," Heero remarked, his voice not betraying a single thing about how he felt about Wufei losing blood.

"Don't worry about him. He'll live. His kind always does," Zechs said flippantly.

"His kind? What is it, some alien?" Duo joked.

"He has Dragon Blood inside of him."

Heero *blinked*. "Dragon Blood?"

Zechs shrugged. "You're going to have to ask him to explain it. Even I don't get it."

"Cool," Duo chirped. "He's a freak!"

"Are you always this impolite?" Zechs glared.

"Are you always this distrusting?"

"Yes."

"Then you have your answer," Duo retorted. He flipped his braid over his shoulder. "Are we there yet?"

"One more block to go."

"Great. I'm starving. Is there anything to eat?" Duo asked, turning his head slightly and smiling charmingly at Zechs.

Said man had no idea what to make of Duo. One minute they were arguing and trading insults, the next Duo was an angel--albeit seductive with no shame, but still an angel.

"There should be something," Zechs said, nodding. "Come on, this way." He led them towards the apartment and started up the stairs. It was then he remembered he didn't have the keys. He turned back around. "Heero, can you find Wufei's keys? They've got to be somewhere in his clothing."

Heero nodded and began to gently check through Wufei's pockets for the keys. It wasn't long before his fingers hit warm metal. He pulled out a ring of keys and threw him to Zechs who caught them expertly with one hand. Then the blonde man turned and unlocked the door. He pushed it open and gestured for all of them to go inside.

"Wufei's bedroom is the first one to the left. Put him in there while I try and find the first aid kit," Zechs said as he threw the keys on to the table and head towards the kitchen.

Duo closed the door behind him and looked around the tastefully decorated room. <Not bad. This dude knows how to live.> The braided man walked around the room, touching and checking out everything he could get his hands on. He was about to reach for a crystal dragon when Zechs' voice interrupted him.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you. Wufei likes his privacy. If he found out you were touching his things, he'd slice your hand off."

Duo turned and smiled. "Well, he doesn't *have* to find out, does he?"

Zechs snorted. "Whatever." He turned around and walked to Wufei's room with Duo trailing behind him in mild curiosity. They walked inside to find Heero carefully stripping the injured man down.

"Ouch, look at those cuts." Duo grimaced. "He got sliced up bad."

"He always likes to push himself," Zechs sighed as he sat down and began unroll bandages and other things needed to patch the Chinese man up.

"Do you need help?" Heero asked, looking up as he pulled Wufei's pants off and threw him somewhere on the floor. They were useless now, torn and bloodied. They would have to go into the trash later.

"Yeah, here, clean this wounds. We don't want them infecting," Zechs said, handing the other man a damp towel.

Duo stood a little away and watched the other two work. He really didn't mind being useless since it gave him a pretty good chance to check out Zechs' backside. He had to admit the tall blonde was *very* good looking. Of course with all that black clothing on, and that damned jacket, Duo couldn't really be sure of Zechs' physique. Although he would bet everything he had that Zechs' body was probably like a god's. *That* put a decidedly happy smile to the braided man's face.

With careful hands, Heero washed Wufei's wounds, making sure not to pull on them or put too much pressure on them. He didn't know why he was being so gentle, usually he didn't give a damn and worked only to get the wounds taken care of. But he couldn't help but be gentle. From what he had seen of Wufei's fighting skills and stamina, the man was very strong and very determined. That, and that only, earned Heero's respect.

Of course it had nothing to do with the fact that Wufei had one nice ass.

"Will he be all right?" Heero asked quietly.

"He'll be fine. He's taken worse than this before. Just give him time to heal and sleep and he'll be fine," Zechs said confidently. And he had seen Wufei torn up worse than this before. The Chinese man *always* pulled through in the end, either due to pure need for justice or just obstinance and the refusal to die so soon.

"What are we going to do while he rests up?" Duo asked, cocking his head to the side.

"I don't think Wufei will really be incensed if we use his bathroom and kitchen," Zechs said as he stood up, stretching and wincing as he pulled on some wounds of his own. "Ow..." He looked at the two men. "Why don't you just make yourselves comfortable?"

Heero nodded and went off to take a shower before all of the hot water was used up.

Duo smiled cheerfully yet almost slyly at the older man. "Do you want me to help you with your wounds?"

Zechs knew he was in trouble the minute Duo looked at him but he knew he wouldn't be able to treat his wounds by himself...Some of them were hard to reach. He sighed mentally and nodded. "That would be...most kind of you."

"Oh, don't worry about it," Duo said, grinning as he winked. "I'd *love* to help."

<Oh brother...Why of all kinds of people did I have to end up with this one?> Zechs grabbed the first aid kit and left Wufei's room with Duo behind him, grinning wickedly the whole way.
