Chapter 5
Two Days Later...LAX Airport...
"Scholar!" Ron Meiren exclaimed happily as she ran with her bags and threw herself into her fiance's arms. She held him tightly and kissed him full on the lips. "I'm so happy to see you again! You wouldn't believe how bad I felt while you were gone!"
Wufei laughed and hugged his fiancee back as he kissed her gently on the lips while pushing back her long hair. She had finally took them out of their silly pigtails a couple of months ago when Wufei finally managed to convince her that wearing them like that isn't proper for a young woman but better for a girl. She had glared at him and told him that she was a woman. The next day the pigtails were gone to Wufei's delight. He loved running his fingers through his love's silky hair when they held each other.
Now, as Wufei stared in the happy eyes of his love, he felt a pang of guilt and sadness. <Meiren, I love you so much but...Duo. I love him even more. I'm so sorry. But you're never going to find out. Never.>
"Well, scholar, did you miss me?" Meiren asked teasingly.
Wufei smiled and nodded. "Yes, Mei-Mei, I missed you too."
"Good! Now, let's get out of this noisy place and to the hotel!" Meiren said, linking her arm around Wufei's and kissing him again on the cheek before they made their way through LAX to the taxi waiting for them. The driver helped with the bags and soon they were on their out of LAX and back to Los Angeles, an hour's worth of a ride.
Meiren smiled as she leaned against her fiancé tiredly. She was going through what Wufei always complained about: jet lag. She closed her eyes, a smile still gracing her smooth lips, as she drifted off into oblivion where dreams of marrying her only love played through her head.
Wufei stared at Meiren's peaceful face and sighed as he brushed away a strand of a silky hair. His heart ached for Meiren but he just couldn't love her like he used to. Half his heart belonged to Duo and maybe just a little more. He hated the idea of hurting Meiren, half the reason why she was never going to find out. She was never going to meet Duo, never going to get hurt. After the business deals were finished and closed, he was going to leave with her back to China and live the life he wanted to live before seeing Duo again. Before falling back in love with Duo, before all this hell erupted from his heart.
"She's your girlfriend?" the driver asked curiously from the front.
Wufei nodded. "Yes."
"Nice. You must love her a lot."
Wufei paused before he slowly nodded.
"Well, good luck to you both," the driver said before he turned his attention back to the road.
Wufei sat there, holding Meiren while he tried to ignore the pain that just kept on growing in his heart...

Duo looked up at the hotel and took a deep breath before walking in. He needed to talk to Wufei. They hadn't spoken in two days since he kissed him. And gods, he wasn't going to talk to Wufei just to apologize. 'Cause seriously, he wasn't sorry at all. In fact, he was quite happy and satisfied with what he had done. Did Wufei seriously think that just being "friends" would be enough to quell that incredible desire, passion and love that they had between each other before he left? If he did he was a complete idiot [1].
Walking up to the front desk, Duo gathered the rest of his nerve and tapped the bell. He had always wanted to do that...
"Yes?" the person asked, looking up from whatever she was doing.
"Um, is Chang Wufei in his room right now?" Duo asked.
"No, sir. Do you want to leave a message?" the woman asked.
"Yeah, could I?" Duo grabbed the paper and pen and quickly scribbled a note for Wufei. He paused for a moment before adding another line. Then he folded it in half and handed it back to the woman. Turning around with his heart beating rapidly in his rib cage, Duo walked out of the hotel and into the streets of LA. Then he headed for the cafe. He needed something to calm his shaking nerves before he met up with Wufei again. 'Cause if he knew Wufei, the Chinese man won't turn down the invitation.

Wufei smiled as he walked through the lobby with Meiren beside him. She was speaking rapidly in Cantonese, which was no surprise to any of those in the lobby. Downtown LA was filled with Chinese people since Chinatown was only 2 minutes away!
"And then your mother was like 'No! The bride must..." Meiren continued explaining a little mishap with preparing for the wedding as Wufei listened dutifully although he truly enjoyed the little tale.
"Excuse me? Mr. Chang?" the woman at the front desk called out.
Wufei turned and looked at the woman.
"You have a note," the woman continued.
"Excuse me, Meiren," Wufei said as he turned back around and took the note from the woman. "Thank you very much." Then he returned to Meiren and continued to listen to Meiren talk.
"Wufei, what's that?" Meiren asked curiously as they stepped into the fancy elevator.
"Oh, probably just a note from one of the business personnel's that I'm working with. It's nothing," Wufei said with a wave of his hand as he slipped the note into the pocket of his slacks. "Now, what did Mother do again?"
Meiren laughed and told Wufei about his mother going all over the city looking for just the right fruit for the wedding...

Meiren sighed as she fell on the bed and closed her eyes. "Mmm...This is nice. It's horrible sitting in a chair for hours and hours. You can't get any sleep!"
"I know, love," Wufei said, smiling as he dropped Meiren's bags off on at the foot of the bed.
Meiren sat up and smiled coyly at Wufei. "There's only one bed, Wufei."
Wufei laughed at the mock seduction and shook his head at his fiancee. "You're impossible, Meiren."
"Of course!" Meiren exclaimed as she fell back and snuggled up against the pillows and blankets. "I'm going to get some sleep."
"You do that," Wufei said as he kissed Meiren on the cheek before walking over to the window and pulling out the note from his pocket. He unfolded it and read it. Suddenly, he wasn't feeling so great and his hands were shaking as his breath came fast and his heart beated painfully.
Taking a deep breath, Wufei tried to calm his body and his heart as he glanced down at his watch and saw that it was only two hours from the time Duo had set. <Well, until then I guess I'll just have to wonder what's going to happen. What does Duo want?> He looked over to Meiren who was fast asleep, her small figure lost in the blankets and pillows. <Meiren...>

Two Hours Later...
Wufei stepped out of the hotel dressed in a gray sweater with khakis slacks and black shoes. He had a leather jacket over it all, looking very handsome and a total heartbreaker. His long black hair was tied back tightly with the rest falling down his back. Again, he wondered why he hadn't cut his hair yet.
"Wufei."
Turning around, Wufei met Duo's violet eyes. He took a slight step back so he could look Duo straight in the face. And, because Duo was far too close for comfort.
"So, let's go," Duo said waving over to his black car. "We need to do some more...talking."
Wufei nodded. "Yes, we do. There's still a lot of things that haven't been settled."
"Yeah, a lot of things," Duo agreed as he pulled open the driver's door and slipped in as Wufei did the same.
Then they were off.

Meiren woke up in a daze. She blinked as she looked around unfamiliar surroundings. Then she remembered she was in Wufei's hotel room. Speaking of which, where was her scholar? She sat up and rubbed her eyes as she yawned and stretched the rest of the kinks out of her body. A nice shower would do wonders right now.
She looked around the dark room and frowned. Where was Wufei? She slipped off the bed and turned on the lights. She checked the bathroom and saw no one in there. Where could Wufei have gone? Then she spotted the note on the table. She picked it up and read it:
Meiren,
It looks like I need to meet with someone about some important things. Don't worry about me. I'll come back as soon as possible. Get something to eat, they have Chinese restaurants not far from the hotel so you'll have no trouble ordering something. I'm sorry I couldn't stay longer with you, but then, after our wedding we'll always be together won't we?
I love you,
Wufei
Meiren smiled as she placed the note back down and walked over to her bags. She unzipped one of them and began to pull out some clothing when she spotted a crumpled note that had probably meant to go into the trash but missed the bin. She picked it up and was about to throw it away when she noticed Wufei's English name written on it. Staring at the note, Meiren battled with herself.
<I'm not supposed to read Wufei's personal things. It's wrong.> She was about to throw it away when, suddenly, a bad feeling took her. She frowned and tried to ignore it like she always did when she felt like something bad was going to happen. Unfortunately, her feelings were always true...
<What if Wufei's in danger? I don't want him hurt...> Meiren shook her head and threw the note into the bin without another thought. She trusted Wufei, she wasn't going to give him a reason not to trust her. She stood up with her clothing and walked into the bathroom to get that much needed shower.
~*~
Meiren smiled happily as she walked out of the bathroom, toweling her hair and humming an old Chinese song. <That shower was perfect!> She walked over to the bed and dropped herself on it as she continued to towel dry her hair. She didn't believe in the blow dryer since it dried out and ruined her hair.
Still humming the song, Meiren glanced around the room and spotted the a crumpled note next to the trash bin.
"I thought I threw that away," she murmured to herself as she let go of the towel and stood up. She picked up the note and was about to throw it away when a suddenly gust of wind from the open window blew it out of her hands. It bounced a few times and rolled on the floor before coming to a complete stop in front of her open bags.
Meiren felt a slice of fear and shock rush through her system. <What was that?!> She walked over to the note and picked it up. She stared at it for a very long time. Then, taking a deep breath, she uncrumpled it and read it:
Wufei,
Meet me outside of the hotel in 2 hours. We need to talk about a lot of things. Like the kiss. Don't tell me you regret it because I know you don't. We really need to get all of this straighten out, Fei. You just can't keep ignoring this, 'cause I'm not.
--Duo
P.S I love you, Wufei. Please, don't throw all of this away.
Meiren fell down to her knees and sat back as she continued to read the note. She didn't know English very well but she knew enough to read that simple note. There weren't that many complicated words...She made everything out perfectly well. Including the 'I love you, Wufei' part. She gasped as she tried to fight back the pain blooming in her chest and the tears that stung her eyes. She threw the note from her and wrapped her arms around her knees and pressed her forehead to her knees.
<This can't be happening...No, this is all a joke, right? Wufei wouldn't have cheated on me. He wouldn't have...Never! He loves me! He loves me! He told me he loves me. He couldn't have, he couldn't have.>
Meiren cried harder as she repeated the contents of the note over and over in her head, trying so very hard to write it off as a fluke. That it was just some crazed stalked who fell in love with Wufei and though Wufei loved her...him? back. Duo? What kind of name is that? Male or female?
Lifting her head, Meiren wiped away the tears that just kept on falling. She turned her head and noticed something shining from inside her bags. She gasped and quickly reached inside. She cried out in pain as she pulled out a shattered photo frame of her and Wufei hugging one day in the park. The whole thing was ruined, only a few shards of glass was left and the picture was sliced. She stared at her hand, the blood leaking from the cuts and down her hand and dripping on to the carpet...
<Wufei!>

*sobs* I don't like what I did to Mei-chan...Oh dear...Well, I guess all of that says a lot, don't it? Fates, I might say...But poor Mei-Mei! Oy...What did I do?
[1] Dra-chan: It looks like you're an idiot, Fei-kun.
Wufei: You always have to make me off as the ass, don't you?
Dra-chan: I have never!
Wufei: Love In Chains?
Dra-chan: Eer...Aw, come on, you were just givin' him freedom!
