February 12

Duo sighed shakily as he stared up at the ceiling of his bedroom. He had been laying in bed all morning, without having any intent on getting up. He had made the biggest mistake in his whole life and he didn't know how to fix it. All he wanted to do was to rush over to Wufei's house and tell him everything and tell him how much he loved him. But he couldn't do that. Not with Yuy in the way and the clear fact that Wufei didn't want to talk to him at all to begin with.

<How did he find out?> Duo wondered was he laid there and stared off at nothing. That was the big question. How did Wufei find out? He had made sure that not a single word was said about the bet, so how did Wufei find out about the bet.

He thought over every single thing he had done since leaving the beach house and going to the club because of some stupid little fire in the kitchen. <I talked with Quatre...Then I went to get a drink.> Duo stopped thinking. <I was talking to Quatre about the bet. And that was around the time Wufei was suppose to come.> Duo moaned and buried his face in his pillow. <I am so fucking stupid it's not even funny. I can't believe it!!> He pounded the pillow angrily, cursing himself for such a slip up.

<I shouldn't have made the bet in the first place,> he thought mournfully. But then if he hadn't he would have never went after Wufei. <So, it was a double edge sword. Great.> He took a deep breath and tried to calm the anger and frustration and hurt inside of him. He had never meant for Wufei to find out about the bet. He had hoped that everything would run smoothly and Wufei would never find out. And if he did he would already know how much Duo loved him and they would make up and everything would be better.

Or at least that's how the things went in his little fantasy world. <Wake up, this is reality.>

He sat up and ran his fingers through his tangled hair. He sighed and fell back down onto the pillow, his blanket falling away from him to reveal his naked chest. <I should talk to him. Try to make him understand what had happened. He HAS to forgive me. I won't be able to live without him.>

Knowing the last thought was a bit dramatic, Duo almost dismissed it when he realized that it was true. He loved Wufei with every single bit of his heart and if he lost the Asian beauty he didn't know what he would do or how he was going to live life.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid," he berated himself as he clutched at the sheets and tried to come up with some kind of solution to get Wufei back. He had to! He couldn't let Wufei slip through his fingers because of some stupid bet. He had to find a way to prove to Wufei that his love was true.

*Kinda hard now that he thinks you played him.*

<Great, now I'm talking to myself! What's gonna happen next?!>

Duo sat up and slid out of bed. He had to get ready and go to work. He couldn't sit around and feel sorry for himself while trying to find a way to win back Wufei, as much as he wanted to he couldn't. He had a business and the rest of the day to live before he could mope.

After showering, brushing his teeth and shaving, he got dressed and left without breakfast. He didn't feel hungry.

Heero watched as Wufei moped around the house. The Chinese man had decided to stay in for the day and skip work. It wasn't like he was really needed at work. If he wanted to he could get a ticket to China and no one would really notice his absence. They really didn't need him in the office to begin with but it was fun to just go and work like a regular businessman and forget that he had hundreds of other people who could take on his duties without trouble.

The Japanese man had managed to get Wufei to drink down at least a cup of tea before he went off to read in the library. Heero hated seeing Wufei mope. When Wufei moped, he wasn't happy and when he wasn't happy Heero wasn't happy. It was as chain-effect that Heero didn't like very much.

<There's gotta be a way to cheer him up. I mean...There's plenty of guys out there,> Heero thought to himself as he absently played solitaire while throwing occasional glances in Wufei's direction. Nothing changed in Wufei's position except he turned the page every once in a while. It was a Chinese book and Heero only knew enough Chinese to read the cover. It had to do with something about space and all the sci-fi stuff that Wufei loved so much.

As he moved one card to another line of cards, Heero frowned and tried to think of what Wufei liked to do the most. Maybe if they did something fun the Chinese man would stop moping and realize that he could live with Duo. <But it's only been the second day. I guess he does have some rights to moping.> Resisting the urge to growl, Heero continued to play as he entertained painful death scenes starring Duo Maxwell before he turned his attention back to trying to cheer Wufei up.

There were a lot of things he could do that might help Wufei pull out of his depressed mood but Heero didn't think his ankle was up to it. He had to think of something that he could do without aggravating his little handicap at the moment.

Sighing heavily, Heero went back to playing solitaire. Maybe he would win. That would be something good to cheer up this really depressing day.

All day Duo's hands itched to pull out his phone and call Wufei to tell him everything. It had taken a while before he finally gave in and when he did his fingers barely touched the keys before it was ringing loudly. He prayed Wufei was home and would pick up. He seriously didn't want to deal with that violent, trigger-happy bodyguard of his.

When the phone was finally picked up he was so relieved to hear Wufei's soft tenor on the other line.

"Wufei."

"Duo?"

"Wufei, please--"

"Why are you calling, Duo?" Wufei demanded, anger and hurt evident in his voice. "I thought Heero told you not to call."

"Really. Well that was Heero. I'm only going to stop calling if I hear it from you," Duo said matter-of-factly.

"Fine then. Stop calling. I know I was only a bet, Duo. There's no need in putting up this act any more," Wufei said angrily.

"Wufei, please, let me explain--"

"Explain what? That you used me to win a bet with Winner? What else do you have to tell me, Duo? I don't want to hear or see you ever again. So don't call," Wufei exclaimed before slamming the phone down.

"Fuck!" Duo cursed loudly as he snapped his phone closed and shoved it into his pocket. "Fuck, fuck, FUCK!"

Several heads turned and looked at him. He glared at them and they promptly turned back around.

"What the fuck am I going to do?" he whispered to himself as he sat down hard on the stool and stared down at the floor. "What am I going to do?"

~*~

"I thought I told him to stop calling," Heero said angrily as he watched Wufei slam the phone down, hard.

"He wanted to hear it from me before he stopped," Wufei said quietly. "Heero, I'm going to go upstairs."

"All right. But come down for lunch later, all right?"

Wufei shrugged. "Maybe." Then he left the library.

Heero sighed as he ran his fingers through his hair and moved another card. He wished there were some way to help Wufei. He knew, without Wufei to tell him, that his friend still loved Duo. A lot, in fact. And Heero could see that having Duo play him really hurted him. <There's gotta be a way to make everything better.>

He moved another card and suddenly blinked as he stared at the screen in surprise. After moving a few more cards he realized he was actually winning! He quickly placed all the cards in their rightful places and hooted for joy as he watched the cards flash across the screen and bounce. He finally won the stupid game!!

"Yes!" he cried out happily as he read his score. It was low but he didn't care. He WON!

~*~

Wufei frowned when he heard the shouting from the library but he didn't bother to go back and find out what Heero was hooting for joy about. He just continued walking back to his room and laid down on his bed. He sighed softly as he pulled his blanket over and curled up, finding relief in being so comfortably wrapped up in his familiar blankets. There was something about just being in his own bed that made everything better.

Closing his eyes, he tried to ignore the sore pain in his heart but it was so hard. He had honestly loved Duo Maxwell but it had all been a joke. And that was what hurted the most.

<If only...He tried to call. I guess I can give him that. But he still played me,> Wufei thought to himself as he felt his body relax. <Maybe...Maybe he does...No way...> Before Wufei had time to complete the thought, he was fast asleep.

Heero was walking out of the mansion to get the mail when he noticed Duo Maxwell was standing outside, leaning against car. Glaring, Heero made his way over to the American and stood in front of him.

"What are you doing here?" he demanded.

"Nothing," Duo said stiffly.

"Look, Maxwell, why don't you just get behind the wheel and leave? I don't want you coming near Wufei," Heero said angrily. "I promised him I wouldn't hurt you so you better get moving before I break that promise."

Duo looked like he was going to say something back when the anger drained out of his face and he stared past Heero. He was silent for a moment he finally looking at the Japanese man.

"Is he okay?" he asked quietly.

Heero was taken back by the emotion behind Duo's question. He blinked and then scowled. "Why would you care?"

"Of course I care!" Duo shouted, throwing up his arms. His voice cracked. "Of course I care," he repeated softly as he looked down at the cold ground. He shrugged and sighed shakily. "You know what? Just forget it. Tell Wufei I'm gonna stay away forever, all right?" He turned and walked around the car. He was about to get in when Heero shouted for him to stop. He looked at the Japanese man. "What?"

Heero took a deep breath. "You really care about him, don't you?"

"A lot," Duo admitted, nodding. "I didn't mean to hurt him, Heero. Tell him that." Then Duo got into the car and drove away.

Heero stood there for a while, watching as Duo's car disappeared down the road. He repeated Duo's words over and over in his mind before the cold reminded him to get the mail and get back inside the house. When he was safe and warm inside he sat down on the couch in the living room and sighed as he made himself comfortable.

He knew exactly what was going to make everything better.
