Destiny's Tapestry

Chapter 4
Duo was drying his hair when the phone rang. At least he wasn't in the shower when it rang, he hated it when that happened. Sighing, he picked up the phone.
"Maxwell here," he said as he held the phone pressed between his ear and shoulder and continued to dry his hair. He had taken a very cold shower when he came back from the Chang Mansion and was feeling only a bit better. He was still burning for the Chinese boy he left back at the mansion and nothing was really helping.
"Have you killed him?"
Duo stopped drying his hair. He straightened and grabbed the phone with his hand. "No. Not yet."
"Why not?"
"Haven't been able to find the right time."
"Find it quick. The other clans want him dead, Maxwell. Do you understand?"
"When have I not?"
There was a pause. "Don't get too close, Maxwell. None of us wants you to botch this because you want that boy in your bed."
Duo felt anger rise in him. "I understand," he said stiffly.
"Good. Get it done."
Duo slammed the phone down and growled softly.
Walking into his bedroom, Duo opened up his closet and pulled out a duffel bag. He walked over to his mirror and dried, combed and braided his hair before he got down to work.
A long oriental dagger with a jagged double-edge blade. It had a strong hilt with skulls engraved into it. The dagger was his favorite, something he got off one of his victims in China. He smiled as he ran his thumb across the blade and almost drew blood. He was going to use the dagger since it was quieter than using a gun, even if he did have a silencer he didn't want the noise at all. Already having tasted the exotic boy he was a bit unsure and nervous about taking him out and taking the boy out silently made him feel better.
Stripping out of his white tank top, Duo began to get dressed. He would do it tonight.

"What's the matter Wufei?" Sally asked as she watched the boy look out of the window in the library with a distant expression.
Wufei snapped out of his thoughts and smiled slightly at Sally. "Nothing. I'm fine."
"Are you sure?"
"I'm sure."
"Go to bed, Wufei. It's late and you look tired," Sally suggested.
"Thanks, Sally. You're right," Wufei agreed as he closed the book he had been trying to read and kissed Sally good night. "'Night."
"Good night, sweet," Sally said, kissing Wufei on the cheek. "And don't forget to close the window. You're always leaving it open."
"Yes, Sally," Wufei said, nodding. But he seriously wasn't going to close the window. He liked it open too much.
Wufei was again lost in deep thought as he walked back to his room. He just couldn't understand Duo Maxwell. He was such a mystery. he thought sadly. Wufei twirled a lock of silky black hair around his finger as he opened the door to his room and walked in. He closed the door and walked over to his closet. He changed into white silk pajamas and turned off the lights, the moonlight showing him the way to his bed.
Slowly, Wufei climbed into bed as he thought about Duo.
Wufei sighed softly.
Sighing again, Wufei fell asleep.
A shadow flitted into the room, leaping over the desk at the window and landed silently on the soft carpet. Duo looked around the room, it was well lit by the moonlight. Quickly he made his way over the door and locked it. He didn't want anyone to come in accidentally.
Turning, he walked over to the bed and stood over the sleeping boy. Duo felt his heart stop and his breath catch. Wufei looked absolutely exquisite lying against the covers, peacefully asleep as his breath slowly came in and out. He looked like an angel.
Reaching out, Duo almost touched him when he remembered why he was there. Quietly, he pulled out the dagger from his boots and raised it over the Chinese boy's heart. He was about to lower it when a sharp pang hit his heart. He swallowed hard and looked at the dagger poised over Wufei's heart before looking at Wufei.
Then Wufei did something Duo didn't expect.
He woke up.
Duo quickly dropped the dagger on the ground and kicked it gently under the bed.
"Duo?" Wufei moaned as he blinked his eyes to clear his eyes and focus them. He gasped. "Duo?!" He had been dreaming of the violet-eyed boy but he didn't expect the boy of his dreams to appear out of nowhere.
Duo nodded silently at Wufei.
"What are you doing here?" Wufei asked as he sat up and ran his fingers through his silky hair. "How did you get in?"
"The window," Duo replied when he managed to find his voice.
Wufei sighed and a slight smile reached his lips. "Sally always told me to close that window every night but I never do." He stared into Duo's amethyst eyes and breathed deeply. "But I don't regret it." He swallowed hard. "Duo, why did you run away this afternoon?"
Duo sat down on the bed and took Wufei's face in his hands. Wordlessly, he brought him close and kissed him firmly and passionately on the lips. Wufei melted instantly at his touch and moaned as his arms went around Duo's neck to pull him closer to him.
"Duo," Wufei sighed as he pulled away and stared at the boy that held his heart. "Duo, why?" Confusion was clear in his obsidian eyes.
"Wufei, please, not tonight," Duo whispered as he kissed the Chinese boy again. "Be mine's tonight, Wufei. Please."
Wufei closed his eyes and leaned against Duo. "I'll always be yours. Always."
Duo smiled sadly and kissed Wufei again before lowering him against the bed and kissing him even deeply.
"Thank you, Wufei," he whispered before he continued kissing the boy and removing his clothes.

Duo woke up in the middle of the night with a pressure on his chest. He looked down to see Wufei's head resting comfortably there with his arms and legs wrapped around him. Duo smiled and smoothed back the boy's hair very gently so that he didn't him up. He closed his eyes and remembered what had happened earlier that night.
Never had Duo had such a passionate and willing lover. Wufei had given himself over without a single thought and Duo was forever grateful to him. Never had Duo had such a lover who didn't hide anything but showed everything. Duo, himself, had also revealed everything. Every pain and every pleasure to the boy beneath him. He had never done that before and it scared him. Wufei had done more than arouse his pleasure, he had stolen his heart and soul.
Duo felt his heart twist painfully as he gently extracted himself from Wufei's possessive embrace and slipped out of bed. He pulled on his clothes and took one last look at the one who had captured his heart before leaving the room the same way he entered. Then he was gone, disappeared into night's shadows.
~*~
Wufei woke up to the most wonderful feeling he had ever felt before in his whole life. He smiled as he stretched and yawned like a cat as he felt the afterglow of a night's passion. Then he noticed something--or someone--was missing. His eyes flew open and he almost cried out when he saw that Duo was gone. The only thing left was the imprint of his body against the sheets.
Closing his eyes, Wufei fought back the pain in his chest and wiped away the tears.
Heart beating hard and breathing harsh, Wufei stumbled out of bed and into the bathroom. He was sticky and sore from last night as he stumbled into the shower and took a hot shower. After a while he was feeling calmer as he turned off the shower and got dressed in his school uniform. He had to go to school. He wouldn't be able to explain what happened without telling everyone everything.
Running a comb through his wet hair, Wufei thought back to the brief time he had been in Duo's arms. He closed his eyes painfully. It had been so right, so perfect. But still Duo left. Why had he left? He could have stayed, could have been there but he left. Was he only a good roll in the bed for Duo?
Wufei opened his eyes and forced himself to continue brushing his hair. He would think no more of Duo. He would go to school and act as if nothing had happened. But what if Duo went to school? Wufei hardened himself. He would ignore Duo.
When he finished combing his hair, Wufei tied it up and grabbed his backpack and left the room. He didn't notice the glint of metal from the bright morning sun's rays underneath his bed.
~*~
Duo didn't go to school. In fact, he had checked out of school early that morning before school started.
Taking a deep breath, Wufei calmed himself and continued to do his work that had been disturbed when Dorothy had told him what had happened.
"I knew he couldn't stick around any longer. That street rat couldn't last a day with us," Relena snickered.
"It's a good thing he realized what kind of group he belonged to and finally left," Dorothy agreed, her sharp eyes narrowing angrily. "The nerve to come in the first place!"
"Ha!"
Wufei resisted the urge to break his pencil and continued to work as he ignored the words of the Bitchy Twins.

Wufei thought relieved as he stumbled into his bedroom only to find that the bed was still a mess, the only reminder of what had happened that night. He quickly gathered the sheets and took them to the washing room. Then he got new ones and covered his bed. He breathed a sigh of relief and thanksgiving that no one had came into his room all afternoon. He would have hated it if someone found out what had happened.
"Wufei?"
Quatre breezed into the room, grinning like a fool.
Wufei smiled slightly. "What happened to you?"
"Hmm...I finally got him!" Quatre said excitedly as he bounced on Wufei's newly made bed. "I got him last night."
"How?" Wufei asked in shock, forgetting his pain as he indulged on his friend's happiness.
"Well, he was out at a club," Quatre began.
"I gave him the night off," Wufei interrupted with a nod as he sat down on the top of his table.
"Yeah, well, he was there and so was I since I was feeling a little bad of not making any progress with him," Quatre explained. He was grinning so widely that Wufei was afraid his angelic face would crack. But Wufei was very happy for Quatre. He finally got the one he wanted and possibly loved. "Anyway, we started dancing and one thing led to another before we ended up at my place." A wicked sparkle in Quatre's sea blue eyes gave Wufei a pretty good idea of what had happened at Quatre's place.
Wufei was laughing. "So that's why he came home so late this morning."
Quatre laughed. "Exactly!"
"This is wonderful, Quat! I'm very happy for you," Wufei said honestly.
Quatre sighed happily. "If you allow it, he's gonna take me out." He jumped off the bed and rushed over to Wufei. "Please, Wufei, let him go for the day!"
Wufei grinned. "Of course!"
Quatre hugged Wufei tightly. "Thank you! I'll take care of him so that he returns in one piece."
Wufei laughed harder.
"So, how are you and Duo?" Quatre asked as he pulled away and sat back down on the bed.
Wufei stopped laughing.
Quatre knew immediately something was wrong. He rushed back over to Wufei and sat down in a chair in front of his friend. He looked up at Wufei's distressed face and felt a pang of guilt. He had been so happy he didn't notice Wufei was so sad.
"What happened?" He asked seriously.
Wufei looked at his long time friend for a long moment.
"Wufei?"
Wufei lowered his head and looked past Quatre to his bed. That was when he caught sight of the quick flash of metal. He blinked and saw the flash again. Without saying a word, he slipped off the table and walked over to his bed. He bent down and retrieved the flashing metal. What he got scared the hell out of him. It was a long, nasty looking dagger with a skull engraved hilt.
"Oh, my god! What is that doing underneath your bed?" Quatre asked in horror, his blue eyes wide in shock.
Wufei's mouth couldn't work for a moment. He swallowed hard and tried again. "I have no idea! It wasn't here last night..." He trailed off and suddenly felt sick.
"Heero! Trowa!" Quatre screamed as he ran out of the room before Wufei could stop him. "Heero! Trowa!"
Heero and Trowa immediately ran to Quatre who told them to go to Wufei's room. Both bodyguards immediately ran to their charge's room to find him crumpled on the carpet, holding a long dagger and crying his heart out.
"What happened?" Trowa asked gently as he bent down beside the sobbing boy. "Wufei?"
Heero knelt down on the other side. He looked up at his lover, wondering what was the matter with their charge. Trowa's forest green eyes told him that he also had no idea what was wrong.
Wufei dropped the dagger, which Heero immediately picked up carefully. He could still get fingerprints from it.
"Who does that belong to?" Trowa asked gently as he rubbed Wufei's back. "Wufei, tell us."
Wufei lifted his head and swallowed hard as tears continued to stream down his face. He turned and looked at Trowa desperately. "He couldn't, he wouldn't! He--" He closed his eyes and continued to cry painfully.
"Who, Wufei?" Heero asked calmly.
Wufei quieted down.

"He's sleeping now. Does any of you know what happened?" Sally asked quietly as she stood up from Wufei's bed.
Quatre shook his head wordlessly as he leaned into Zechs' comforting embrace. Both of them were very, very worried for their friend whom they both knew since they were only little boys.
Heero and Trowa were both tensed with anger and frustration. They were suppose to protect Wufei but somehow someone got into the house and almost killed him with that dagger. But then, what stopped them from killing Wufei? That was the main question. Why hadn't the assassin finished the job?
"He was unhappy and upset about something," Quatre remembered. "I tried to ask him what was wrong but then he saw the dagger and got it out from underneath the bed." He paused. "Wufei...something wasn't right. I think he knew who was the owner of the dagger."
There was a very strained and dangerous silence.
"How?" Heero asked.
Quatre shook his head. "I have no idea. But there was something in his eyes...He knew. I don't know how but he knew and he's not telling us."
"Why not?" Trowa asked quietly, his forest green eyes smothering with anger. "Why won't he tell us?"
"He's trying to protect whoever tried to kill him," Heero said quietly as his mind worked over every single possibility.
"But why?" Zechs asked, baffled. "Why would he protect his would-be assassin?"
Quatre was silent as he stared at his resting friend. Even in sleep Wufei didn't look at ease at all. There was something Wufei was hiding and he wasn't going to say anything any time soon.
"Look, why don't we ask him when he wakes up. Until then, let's leave and give him time to rest," Sally suggested wearily as she ushered them all out of the room.
When the door closed to Wufei's room, the boy opened his eyes. He lay in bed silently, not making a single move. He had woken up a while ago but refused to make it known. He didn't want to deal with all the questions. And already they knew that he was keeping Duo's identity a secret. Quatre and Heero were very smart.
"Wufei?" Quatre's soft voice startled Wufei. "Wufei, open your eyes. I know you're awake."
Wufei sighed and opened his eyes. "What do you want, Quatre?"
Quatre sat down beside Wufei and looked at him intently. "Who is it, Wufei? Who are you trying to protect?"
"Don't you see? He's trying to protect me," Wufei said softly.
"Please, Wufei, tell me what's going on," Quatre pleaded. "I'm your best friend, you can tell me."
Wufei shook his head and closed his eyes. "I can't, Quatre. I just can't."
"Why not?"
"Because I love him."

I hope that was okay...Hey, remember, this is a first for me! Go easy!
