Doctor Smunk is a four piece original Heavy/Alternative band from Melbourne.
The band formed in mid 2000 when Dave, Azz, Jamie (original drummer) and Linden came together through mutual friends.
They instantly hit it off, writing their own material straight away.
They entered the 2000 'Push Battle Of The Bands', only 3 weeks after coming together, the boys thought they needed a new name to stick with the new music and line-up, so, through some greuling thinking and stuffing around, 'Doctor Smunk' came out as the new name.
Heat #3 of the battle of the bands was Doctor Smunk's first gig together, amazingly the band won the heat on the night and moved on to the Final held two weeks later.
The guys did alot of organising and practise, and, on the night of the Final, they took home first prize again, pushing them into the Regional finals held in a months time.
The winning streak pushed Doctor Smunk further and inspired them to rehearse more and more.
When the Regional Finals arrived, Doctor Smunk felt ready, they had put alot of work into winning and felt they had a good chance.
The night showcased winning bands from all around south-east melbourne, competing for the chance to play at the Victorian Finals, held at the 'Push-on' Festival, at Luna Park in march, the following year.
Through a tough night of brilliant bands, Doctor Smunk, again, won first prize, due to the quality of their originals, their participation with the crowd, and their electrifying stage presents.
There was now 4 months until the 'Push-on' festival, so they continued writing new material and playing local shows for practice and fun, and the odd bit of mulah.
Due to a fall-out with the band in December 2000, Jamie left the band and was replaced by the young talent of Matt (Mooch) Ambrosiak, the 14 year old polish skin thrasher.
Now with the completed line-up and no more complications within the band, the boys were set to concentrate on the music.
When Push-On arrived, the boys felt confident but still nervous, knowing that they were going to be playing with bands such as: Grinspoon, Sunk Loto, Frenzal Rhomb, Motor Ace, Body Jar, and Area-7....(just to name a few), in front of a sell-out crowd of approx. 4000 people.
Doctor Smunk came out with 2nd place, happy to have got so far, and acheive the goals they had set in the begining.
Since then, Doctor Smunk have recorded a second E.P titled 'The Atmospherical Hommun' and have been playing all around Melbourne and Victoria, getting a great response from everyone, the boys are currently writing new material for the next cd.
