Larix lyallii
My Larix lyallii plant, just after its 4th birthday.
Since it is young, it retains its needles while dormant.
The alpine larch grows in the Cascade and Rocky Mountains in the Northwest.  It is similar to Larix occidentalis, but grows at higher elevations.  Its twigs are covered in wooly hairs that help protect shoots from frost.  I obtained seed from a site high on the Selkirk Crest in North Idaho.  Out of a few hundred seeds, I got one germinant.

Since this plant is very difficult to grow at lower elevations- even with cool northwest summers, I decided to do something a little different.

I planted the seeds on Thanksgiving of 2002.  The single germinant sprouted within a month.  I gave it a 3-month "summer" in one of my highland tropical terraria, where it would receive warm days and cool nights.  Because it was it was growing during the winter, I was able to avoid high temperatures.  In the spring, I placed the plant in the refrigerator, where it would spend the next nine months in dormancy.  I've been growing it this way for the last 4 years.  These plants are very slow growing, so I am planning to keep this tree as a bonsai.  That way it will always fit in my refrigerator.  :)
