Golden Woods
ALONG THE RIDGE
You force your way through a tough not of vines and stumble into another meadow. It, like others you have entered, is empty as, its long grasses swaying majestically to the faraway sound of the thundering waterfalls. You close your eyes and simply listen, taken in by the soft sounds that envelop you, the sensations of the warm sun and the cool breeze from the exposed ridgeline only several tens of feet away....
THUMP!!
Your eyes fly open at the sound and cast around you, trying to identify the suddeen intruder on your solice! The grasses wave around something murky black and unfocused and you realize your eyes are watering and your fear is taking hold of you. Wiping at your face frantically and trying to pull your shattered nerves back together, you growl and finally look up at the thing that has thrown you so off balance! And it stares right back at you.....

The creature is of the purest white and black, sleek and strong and graceful as if dances over the tops of the grasses, seeming to hover with its large wings that flatten the grasses with their powerful downstrokes. The wind the flapping creates is what makes your eyes water and you are thankful when the thing finally ssettles and you can get a better look at it. Black and white all over with the acception of a bright blue/white streak in its long mane and tail, the creature is majestic. Slim and muscular, you judge from this and its earlier display that it is a supreme beast once airborn and on land as well, as it is now, it moves gracefully. It stares you down, stalking this way and that in an arch around you, edging ever-closer. Feeling afraid and annoyed you shoot at it to either eat you already of fly on about its business!
The creature snorts and looks offended! "Me? Eat you? Why you, little thing, would not make a decent meal for a pint-size bunny rabbit! And I do not eat meat, dear friend, for I am not of a barbaric nature." The creature moves closer step by step, attempting to stare you down. When its nose is not more than an inch from yours, it smiles... "You are brave, travelor. I admire bravery, and so I will not cast you out...yet. I am Esha'Tallen~De'Tanx, or Waterfall's Glory in the tongue of this land. My native tongue is Usyan, used in the land of my ancestors. I am a Driacorn, a mix of creatures tru and mystical. In my veins is the blood of more normal animals such as bats and bulls, and the mythical greats like Unicorns, Mushus and even the Tir Pah'Llocks! And it is very special blood, too, for I am not the flesh and blood you think I am! I was conjured by the Lady Azrielen for a contest held by the elusive Cloud, the creator of the Driacorns. This place you see here is my home and has been since I was created! It is lovely here, no? I enjoy living on the edge of forever and I often find myself staring into the pit beyond the ledge. We are forbidden to fly there, did you know that? No creature may go into the ravine for it is there that legendary monsters dwell. Never, ever go there, my friend, no matter how tempted you may feel..." Esha' grows silent and brooding for a moment before a rattling of the grasses behind him makes him smile warmly. "Ah! And here is my little charge now! Come out here Zeeb!in'." A young Driacorn stallion pushes his head through the tall grasses and looks up at the big Dria with a warm smile. Esha' nudges the young one forward to afford you a better look....

"Travelor, meet Zeeb!in'Ger'iine'Kil!a, my new charge! He is handsome no?" WIth that, the foal blushes bright red all along his face and neck, breaking away from his guardian and darting back into the grasses! "Yo could say he's a bit shy, but that'll change as he grows! His name means Silver One Among Gold, a wondrous name that denotes individuality. He is already a promising artist, when he feels he's ready, he always says he will train his skill and be famous! Ah, the big dreams of youth!" Esha' is no longer so sad as he looks above the grasses and into the woods to catch a glimpse of the young stallion hovering at the edge of the treeline. "Az said often that a true Driacorn would be a wonderful companion to me. Indeed. We will fly together when he is old enough...we're like family. Family is very important to me, though I understand little of it, for you see, because I am not of true birth, I have no family. Hopefully I shall be a good mentor to Zeeb!in. It was very lonely before he came, and I do worry about him often. I really should be going to find him...some of the swamps beyond the trees can be treacherous..."
He nods a farewell and goes to chase his charge, leaving you along with in the grasses of the empty field. It is beautiful and you's love to learn more of the two creatures, but you fell the pull of unknown territories and feel a need to venture onward...

The golden grove now quiet, and not wanting to disturb the happy pair too much more, you decide to move on... You feel drawn toward the distant sound of roaring waters, and can make the choice to move toward the sound, or to deny your desires and move away, travelling farther down the edge of the ridge. And then there is always the possibility of harnessing the powers whirling around you and to teleport back to the crossroads... |
