| The Legend of the Sticklizard: In the deserts of Arizona there are a certain kind of small lizard which have made a remarkable adaptation to the intense heat. These lizards scurry around the desert floor carrying a stick in their mouths. In the heat of the summer, you will see them race along for a few feet, then they will plant the stick in the ground and climb up on it. Obviously, they need to cool their feet off! After a moment's rest, they'll climb back down, retrieve their stick and continue on their way, looking for a shady spot. You can tell when the true hot temperatures are here, because the stick lizards come out! |
