Notes from Torbj�rn (Jan 2002)

We had some problems with the phono plugs, cause of the construction
on the radio.. So we had to use our Dremel-cutting tool to cut off
some of the photo plug to make it reach all the way into the connector
in the tranceiver (see pictures).

We also managed to fit the interface into the cover of the 9-pin D-Sub.

The trick to fit it all into a pre-drilled board (vero-board) is to
use smaller components, with smaller body and legs.  The holes on the
pre-drilled board are quite big so I managed to fit two components
into a single hole.

Actually, there is plenty of room left. When we started to build we
where trying to make it as compact as possible, but when we where
half-through we saw that the space where no problem what so ever ;)
You can almost build two sets and fit it into the Clamshell ;)

I've used a ordinary telephone cable with rg-15 connectors (the rg-15
connectors where of course removed).  The cable consists of 4 cables,
only used 3 of them .. The black one that you can see on the photos
was mounted to GND just for supporting the cable, it is not connected
at the phono-plug end.

Again, the biggest problem was to get the phono plugs to get all the
way into the tranceiver.  So, be careful when trimming/carving the plug
to make it fit. We used a Dremel tool.  There might be plugs available
in market that fits directly, I'm not sure.

We also connected pin no.6 and pin no.4 together on the DB-9 to make
the interface not depending on the program to make RTS. This is not
nessisary to get it to work with the MCP programs, but we thought it
whould be nice ;)

ELFA (www.elfa.se).  And managed to keep it all under 100 Swedish
Kronor (cable excluded) (~$10).

Other notes (comments from KB7QPK Chris)

The NorComp 972 series from Digikey looks similar. The Newark Catalog shows others including Cinch DE-51218-1 (Newark 45F990), SPC Technology 8335-0243 (Newark 16N6957), and ITT-Cannon DEBS9 (Newark 93F8859).

I have not verified any of these but they look like they might work also.
