Dick Enmore SCOTT (3931)

Dick was born in Sydney NSW AUS in 1878, the eighth child of Richard SCOTT and Rachel nee KEIGHTLEY. Very little is known of Dick's life until his enlistment in the AIF.

In October 1915 Dick enlisted in the AIF. He listed his occupation as Miner which accounts for his enlisting at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia rather than near his birthplace of Newtown NSW. Departing from Fremantle aboard HMAT Militades, he sailed for England on 12 February 1916.

The 51st Battalion was raised in Egypt during March 1916 and Dick was assigned as one of its members. Half of this battalion were fresh reinforcements from Australia, the other half coming from Gallipoli veterans of the 11th Battalion and was mainly composed of men from Western Australia. They arrived in France on 12 June 1916 and moved to the trenches of the Western Front.

Although the 51st didn't see it's first major battle until August & September, Dick's war service was to be short, being killed in action near Armentieres, France on 25 June 1916. He is buried at Rue-Du-Bois Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France (shown below © CWGC).
