Immigration - Ships

This page provides information about the various ships my ancestors are known to have travelled on whether convict, assisted / bounty or free. This may include journeys taken in addition to their initial arrival to Australia.

Please note that departure and arrival dates are approximate only as various sources may list different dates.

Admiral Lyons

The Admiral Lyons departed Liverpool on 13 June 1857. She was carrying assisted immigrants and arrived in Sydney on 15 September 1857.

The State Records site states that she was a "brig of Sydney, Moffat, Master, Burthen 198 Tons. From the port of Liverpool to Sydney, New South Wales, 22nd September 1857". In addition to crew she carried 169 male adults, 202 female adults, 44 male children and 33 female children.

She was a full rigged ship built in Quebec, Canada in 1856. (Source: Sydney Heritage Fleet)

The ship arrived with Scarlet Fever on board and was in quarantine for 6 days, with several passengers confined to the quarantine station for 15 days. Fortunately there were no deaths. Agnes

Arrived in Sydney on the 13th of February 1842.


Bee

The Bee carried assisted immigrants from the UK to NSW. She departed from Liverpool on the 12th of September 1855 and arrived in Sydney on 6 January 1856.


Coromandel, 1804

The Coromandel 1 (2) sailed from England on the 4th of December 1803 carrying 200 male convicts. She arrived in Sydney on the 7th of May 1804.

She was 522 tons and built at Chittagong in 1793.


Coromandel, 1825

 


Experiment

The Experiment 1 carried mostly female convicts but also some free passengers. She sailed from Spithead on 6 December 1803 but suffered damage in a storm. After repairs she departed Cowes on the 2nd of January 1804 and arrived in Sydney on the 12th of June 1804.


Harmony

The Harmony (1) carried 80 female convicts. She departed London on 4 June 1827 and arrived in Sydney on 27 September 1827.


Hercules II

The convict ship Hercules II (1) departed Portsmouth on the 29th of December 1824 and arrived in Sydney on 7 May 1825 with 133 male convicts on board.


Hibernia

Departing from Portsmouth on 20 November 1818, the Hibernia arrived in Sydney on the 18th of June 1819. She travelled via Hobart Town where she disembarked a group of male convicts.


Hive

The Hive departed Portsmouth on her first voyage to Australia on 29 January 1834 and arrived in Sydney on 11 June 1834 carrying 248 male convicts.

She was wrecked south of Jervis Bay NSW in 1835, one of only three ships lost in Australian waters whilst engaged in transporting convicts. The wreck was located in December 1994. The Hive was built at Deptford Kent in 1820 and was 480 tons gross and 120 feet long. (Source: NSW Heritage Office )


Isabella

A bounty immigrant ship, the Isabella departed London on 11 January 1840 for Sydney.


John Dalton

Sailed from Liverpool in England on 3 March 1848 and arrived in Sydney NSW AUS on 26 June 1848.


Lady East

Made one voyage only to Australia departing from Sheerness / Falmouth in England on 7 Nov / 16 Dec 1824 and arriving in Hobart (VDL) on 8 / 9 April 1825. There were 208 convicts disembarked from the ship. (Source: http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/convicts/conships_l.htm )


Maitland

The Maitland (1) departed from Sheerness on 22 March 1840 and arrived in Sydney on 14 July 1840. She carried 302 male convicts.


Southworth (2)

Departed from Sheerness / Downs on 25 / 27 September 1833 and arrived in Hobart on 14 January 1834 with 188 male convicts on board.


Surrey

The convict ship Surrey (6) arrived in Sydney on 26 November 1831 having departed Portsmouth on 17 July 1831. She carried 199 male convicts.

The Surrey (also known as Surry) was built at Harwich in 1811. She had one of the longest careers as a convict transport and she was the only transport to make 11 passages to Australia. Susan

 


Tottenham

The Tottenham sailed from Spithead on the 27th of March 1818 and arrived in Sydney on 14 October 1818. She carried 190 male convicts on her arrival in Sydney, having lost 10 during the voyage.

She was 557 tons and built at Stockton in 1802.


Zamora

Arrived Brisbane 22 November 1883 having departed London on 18 Aug 1883. QLD Ref: PL M1706 imm/126..
