Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (we'll call it DMD from now on) is a genetic disorder, a typographical error in the cookbook of the body's cells. That means that it is there from the moment of conception. In fact, DMD can now be diagnosed while a baby is still in the mother's womb. DMD is considered too rare for routine neonatal screening to be economical, so it usually will not be detected that early.
