Prince Vasili Bebutov

Prince Vasili Bebutov was an infantry general of an ancient Armenian princely family and served as an officer of the Russian Empire.  He was born in 1791 in the city of Tiflis.  His received his education at the First Cadet Corps, from which he graduated in 1809 as an ensign to join the Cherson Grenadier Regiment.  During the Russo-Turkish War of 1806-12, Prince Vasili participated in the Battle of Akhaitisikh in the year 1810.  He was an active officer in the Franco-Russian war on 1812.  In 1816, he returned to his native Caucasus and became an adjunct to A.P. Ermolov.  In 1817, Prince Vasili accompanied Ermolov in his Extraordinary Embassy to Persia.  In 1819,  he took part in several operations against the highlanders of Dagestan in the North Caucasus.  He participated with destinction in the 1820 conquest of Kazi-Kumykh khanate and Khozrek assaults.
In 1825, Prince Vasili was appointed the Commander of the Second Brigade of the 22nd Infantry Division and Vicegerent of Imeretia.  During the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-29, he participated in Akhaltsikh conquest and managed the Akhaltskih region after its pacification.  In 1830, Prince Vasili was appointed the governor of Western Armenia, recently taken from the  Turks.  Likewise,  since 1838 he was the member of the Transcaucasian Area Management Council, later a member of the Army Headquarters in Poland,  the interim commandant of the Zamostye fortress, and was with the Caucasian Special Corps.
In early 1844,  Prince Vasili was appointed army commander for northern and highland Dagestan.  In 1846 while in command of his regiment,  he  defeated Shamil's detachments at the village of Kutishi.  In late 1847, Prince Vasili became the head of the civil administration with the title Supreme Administration Council Chairman of  the Transcaucasian Region.  In 1853-54 , while he was the Commander of the Caucasian Corps, Prince Vasili defeated the Turks at Bashkadyklar and Kyuryuk-Dara.  In late 1854, he was reappointed as the head of the civil administration in the Caucasus.  In early 1858, Prince Vasili became the member of the State Council.
Prince Vasili Bebutov died in Tiflis on March 10,  1858.
