Stereo and Speaker Installation

Current System: It's music, barely

Head Unit: Pioneer
Speakers: Pioneer

I received a Pioneer headunit out of a friend's rolled over Rodeo. I liked the fact that the headunit was pre-disastered and the likelyhood it would be involved in a second rollover would be that much less. I've since upgraded to a newer also used unit. I like the Pioneer because they fit the bizarre angle and short depth of the mounting location and never skip no matter how rough it gets on or off the road.

I chose Pioneer speakers because I could buy them from Wal-Mart and I wanted to do the installation myself. I replaced each original speaker with the same size unit available from Pioneer. In the front doors I used one pair of TS-G1045 4" speakers and one pair of TS-G1345 5 1/4" speakers. For the rear speakers that mount in the headliner, I used another set of TS-G1045 4" speakers. I had wanted to put a larger speaker back there, but didn't want to modify headliner at that point. The headliner is currently being replaced and I'm finally improving the rear speaker set up.

Speaker installation was pretty easy, although it did present me with a few problems. The first was that the door panels of the Rover have the metal speaker mount embedded within them. Thus, I decided against enlarging the hole for a larger speaker. Second, the original speakers mount quite differently than the way I mounted the Pioneers. Instead of using four screws in the corners, it mounted with a single screw in the center of the magnet on the back of the speaker. Third, upon removal of the original 5 1/4" speakers, I noticed there were two sets of input wires. I thought that odd at first, but realized that the second set of inputs were actually outputs used to power the 4" speakers above. The Pioneer speakers did not have the double set of prongs, so I did some very careful wire splicing.
