ping and traceroute
Ping and traceroute can be used in order to map out the size and scope of a network (ie: the number and address of available servers and border routers.
Ping is used to test the reachability of destinations by sending them requests and waiting for replies. Ping is usually used to test if a machine is on the network or not.

Traceroute is a TCP/IP utility that provides information on the path a packet takes from the sender to the destination.
It will go on and one until it times out and stops by one of the servers don’t respond to traceroute.
