BOOKS

  • Unix -
  • Incomplete list of books for Solaris Debugging and administration
    • Sun Performance and Tuning, Second Edition, by Adrian Cockroft and Richard Petit. One of the finest books about what is going on deep inside the solaris organism. Good to read again and again.
    • Configuration and Capacity Planning, Brian Wong. Another must have book - this details more hardware and large scale issues.
    • Solaris Internals, Core Kernel Architecture, by Jim Mauro and Richard Mc Dougall. More up to date than the performance and tuning, but some different sub-systems are covered. Doors are finally explained...
    • Panic! Unix System Crash Dump Analysis, by Chris Drake and Kimberley Brown. When you have nothing but a core file to work with, this book will show you where to start. Lots about the adb.
    • Essential System Administration, AEleen Frish. Good overall book for a subject which is at best unwieldy.

  • TCP/IP Networking -
  • Just some basic networking references
    • TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1, Richard Stevens. If you were trapped on a desert island with network problems, and were only allowed a single book ...
    • TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2 The Implementation, Richard Stevens, Gary R. Wright. Much like the first, except with source code for kernel internals.
    • Internet Routing Architectures, by Bassam Halabi. An excellent reference for BGP.
    • High Availability Networking with Cisco, by Vincent C. Jones. Almost everything you ever wanted to know about networking redundancy, but were afraid to ask. Most of the ideas presented can be applied to non cisco gear.

  • Security -
  • Good books about bad people
    • Practical Unix and Internet Security,Garfinkel and Spafford. Although a little old, this is still an excellent reference on the subject.
    • Firewalls and Internet Security: Repelling the Wily Hacker, by Cheswick and Bellovin. My very first firewall book...
    • Network Intrusion Detection, An Analyst's Handbook, by Northcutt and Novak. Good overview of how IDS systems work and how to use them.
    • Intrusion Signatures and Analysis, by Northcutt, Cooper, Fearnow and Frederick. After you read the book above, read this to see what you are looking at when the IDS is turned on.

  • Programming -
  • More books!
    • Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment, by Stevens. Yet another thick definitive book about writing good code for unix boxes.
    • Unix Systems Programming for SVR4, by Curry. This book is both easy to read and useful beyond words.
    • Thinking in Java, by Eckel. A good intro about how java (and the general OO paradigm) really works.
    • SSL and TLS, by Rescorla. Explains exactly what is going on with SSL. Lots of examples and source.
    • Java Cryptography, by Knudsen. How to use the crypto functionality in java. Good stuff.
    • Unix Network Programming, by Stevens. The last Stevens book on this list. What can I say, the man writes good books.
    • Applied Cryptography, by Schneier. The real thing. Good paranoid cryptographic information including source. Well written too.

  • Other -
  • Stuff that is not so computer oriented.
    • The Limits of Mathematics, by Chaitin. Covers strange ground regarding information theory and formal reasoning. Lots o LISP that I don't understand ..
    • Chaos, James Gleick.
    • The Origins Of Order, Kauffman. How did we make it out of the mud?
    • The Making of the Atomic Bomb, Richard Rhodes.
    • Consciousness Explained, Dennett. Memes. I love memes.
    • All the Strange Hours, Loren Eiseley.
    • The Iliad, Homer. Doh!
    • Last Temptation of Christ, Nikos Kazantzakis.
    • Einsteins Dreams, Lightman
    • Godel, Escher, Bach, Hofsteder. Good stuff.
