· The Pyramids of Egypt: A group of three pyramids, Khufu, Khafru, and Menkaura at Giza, outside modern Cairo. The largest pyramid, built by Khufu, a king of the fourth dynasty, had an original estimated height of 482ft.; the base has sides 755 ft. long, and contains 2,300,000 blocks. The weight of each is 2.5 tons. Estimated date of construction is 2800 b.c.e. Of all the ancient wonders, only the pyramids alone survived.
· Hanging Gardens of Babylon: Built by Nebuchadnezzar about 600 b.c.e. to please the queen, Amuhia. Archaeologists surmise that the gardens were laid out atop a vaulted building, with provisions for raising water. The terrraces were said to rise from 75 to 300 ft.
· Statue of Zeus at Olympis: The work of Phidias, this colossal figure in gold and ivory was reputedly 40 ft. high. All traces are lost, except for reproductions on coins.
· Temple of Artemis: A beautiful structure, begun around 350 b.c.e. in honor of a non-Hellenic goddess who later became of the same name. The temple was destroyed by invading Goths in c.e. 262.
· Mausoleum at Halicarnassus: This famous monument was erected by Queen Artemisia in memory of her husband, King Mausolu of Caria in Asia Minor, who died in 353 b.c.e. Some remains are in the British Museum.
· Colossus at Rhodes: The bronze statue of Helios, about 105 ft. high, was the work of the sculptor Chares, who labored for 12 years before completing it. It was destroyed in an earthquake in the 224 b.c.
· Pharos of Alexandria: Destroyed in an earthquake in the 13th century.
