Troop Rules
Troop 256 bases its rules in general on the
Scout Oath and Scout Law. More specific rules and practices follow:
General Rules
- The Troop Committee approves changes in
permanent Troop Rules. The Scoutmaster may make temporary rules at any time for a
particular activity. Any adult leader or Scout may suggest temporary rules to the
Scoutmaster, or permanent rules to the Troop Committee.
- Troop Scout and adult leaders will not
tolerate disruption of Troop activities.
- A Scout will not fight, use bad language,
and/or demonstrate behavior that endangers or causes discomfort to another Scout.
- A Scout will not show disrespect to another
Scout or adult leader.
- Dues of $5.00 per month are payable to
Patrol leaders. Scouts should earn the money themselves.
Camp Rules
- Scouts and adult leaders will wear Class A
uniforms en route to camps and activities. Troop 256 recommends Class B uniforms within
camp.
- When participating in camp activities,
Scouts must wear closed-toed footwear at all times. For practical purposes, that means at
all times except when sleeping or swimming.
- Scouts will practice the buddy system on
trips and activities. A Scout will not leave the view of at least one adult leader until
notifying his patrol leader or an adult leader, and must be accompanied by another Scout
buddy. Patrol leaders should be aware of the whereabouts of each member of his patrol.
- Troop 256 requires permission slips and
medical releases for each troop event covered by a Tour Permit.
- Patrols pitch tents, and cook as a patrol.
- No more than two Scouts will occupy a
sleeping tent. A Scout will not occupy a sleeping tent with an adult leader unless that
adult is the Scout's parent or guardian.
- No flames are allowed in tents. Flashlights
only.
- Lights out and Quiet Time. In case of a camp
policy, Troop 256 will follow that policy. Otherwise, the Scoutmaster will determine the
time(s) when Lights out and/or Quiet Time begin(s).
- Scouts below the rank of Second Class shall
not carry or use matches until they have received training in the proper and safe use of
fire unless they carry proof of having received such training (e. g. - Fire Man Chip).
- Scouts below the rank of Second Class shall
not carry or use an axe, or a knife, other than a knife normally used for eating, until
they have received training in the proper and safe use of axes or knives unless they carry
proof of having received such training (e. g. - Totin' Chip). Adult leaders may confiscate
any axes or knives in violation of this rule until the troop returns home, at which time
the adult leader will return the item(s) to the Scout's parents with an explanation of the
reason for confiscation.
- Troop 256 will leave the camping area in as
good or better condition than we found it.
- The campsite and/or Troop 256 will provide
appropriate waste containers. Scouts must deposit all waste materials in these containers.
- None of the following items are allowed at
camping sites: electronic games, CD players, boom boxes, radios, TVs, books, magazines or
other materials that violate the principles of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. Drivers
to campsites may permit electronic devices during travel at their discretion, but any such
devices will remain in the vehicle upon arrival at the campsite. Adult leaders may
confiscate any items found in violation of this rule until the troop returns home. An
adult leader will return the item(s) to the Scout's parents with an explanation of the
reason for confiscation.
- Adult leaders may ban any items found to
detract from the good order of a campsite; examples include food items or wrappers with
which Scouts have found difficulty in placing in waste containers.
- Scouts must use latrine facilities, if
available, or dispose of biological solid wastes as the Boy Scout Handbook (1990 edition,
page 50) prescribes (viz. - buried).
Boards of Review and Courts of Honor
- Scouts will appear in full Class A uniforms
at these occasions.
