THE CONCEPT OF JUSTICE

Black's law dictionary summarizes justice as, "[t]he fair and proper administration of laws."

While Chambers dictionary describes justice as meaning, "the quality of being just: integrity: impartiality: rightness...."

On the other hand the Christian Community Bible, Catholic Pastoral Edition notes that justice is the intervention of God to achieve a just order.

Black's aforesaid summary seems to lay emphasis on equitable administration of law and Chambers' on integrity and impartiality of the administrator.

Although there are some judges who put in their best in the administration of justice they do this with human limitations. A judge still has to rely on evidence before the court and not on intuition. In fact they are not clairvoyant. Also a judge who is daily plagued by inequalities and contradictions of race, class, tribe, wealth, power and position may have a tilted view of equity.

These noble ideals may only be fully achieved with God"s intervention on earth and that is when Jesus Christ returns to rule our world. It was said of God in Ps.89 v.15 that:

"Justice and righteousness are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you."

What appears to be a ray of sunshine is Isaiah 45 v.8 where God says, "[l]et the heavens send righteousness like dew and the clouds rain it down. Let the earth open and salvation blossom, so that justice also may sprout; I, Yahweh have created it."

Some more biblical precepts of Justice can be gleaned from Exodus. See Ex.23 vs.1-9.

Finally, that God is not a wicked task master but a benevolent Judge is not in doubt. See, the story of the workers in the vineyard. Mt.20 vs.1-16.
