B4 Fossil Cave

Grid Ref. 70484496

Depth: 36.4m Length: 479.2m

Equipment required:- 2 tapes, 2 x 2Oft ladders

From the entrance a 3.5m iron ladder leads to a rubble floor. A scramble down solution flutes through Dog Bone Cleft leads to the top of the first pitch of 4.5m. This pitch should be laddered by inexperienced cavers.

The bottom of the pitch leads to the Entrance Chamber with a horizontal boulder strewn floor, To the right a 3.6m climb up the chamber wall leads to the inclined passage to Powell Pot (described below), To the left is the way on. A boulder forms the lip of the next pitch of 4.2m. This pitch should also be laddered by the inexperienced. The large boulder at the base of the first pitch provides a belay point.

The rubble floor at the bottom of the 4.2m pitch leads into a narrowing canyon 19m long. There are two ways on. A squeeze in the floor leads into Signature Chamber after a 2m climb down. Signature Chamber can also be reached via an awkward 3.4m climb, 2m past the squeeze. Signature Chamber derives its name from past vandalism of the signature form. Adding names to cave walls is vandalism and could be dealt with by NPWS as a criminal offence.

At the far end of Signature Chamber two routes are available. On the right a 2m climb up leads into a low crawl way 3.5m long. After another 6m there is a side passage on the left leading to the upper level flatteners and Root 19. The way on is straight ahead to Kings Cross. After l0.Sm a hole on the left is passed, this leads to Compass Chamber and the streamway below Kings Cross. Another Sm on is an aven via which the upper level flatteners can be accessed. Continuing a further 5.Sm along the passage Kings Cross is reached.

From the far end of Signature Chamber the lower stream passage can be followed for 20m to a duck under. After rain this route may be wet and muddy. The 0.3m high duck under leads to Compass Chamber which is 3.5m high and —3m wide. The hole above the duck under leads back to the main route through the cave. The passage to the left is Root 19 which carries water from the B 19 doline to the lower streamway. The way on is to the far end of the chamber which is the bottom of Kings Cross. Two routes are available. A 1 5m climb down leads to the continuation of the streamway which is blocked after lOin. A 2m climb up leads to a ledge and the main route through Kings Cross. The main route from Signature Chamber (marked in black on large map) leads to the same ledge after a short climb down over sediment. At the top of the 1 .7m climb up the opposite wall is a tight passage leading to the streamway beyond the blockage where there is a further 11 m of passage before it also becomes impassable. Continuing another im up the 1 .7m climb leads to 17m of passage and the connection to BS.

B4 Powell Pot - Fossil Cave

Equipment required:- 2 tapes, 20ft ladder, 20m rope, 30ft ladder, 50ft ladder, 25m rope.

From the B4 Entrance Chamber a 3.6m climb up the chamber wall leads to the inclined passage to Powell Pot. Inexperienced cavers may require a ladder for the exposed 3.6m climb. The passage is 0.7m high, ~l.5m wide and

inclined at 220. After 5m a tight, awkward squeeze is encountered, this can be bypassed, but the alternative is even more disgusting. After negotiating the squeeze a small chamber is reached. Up to the right is a side passage but the way on is through the low crawl on the left which opens out into a chamber at the top of the pitch. On the left wall is a large bollard, an ideal belay point.

The start of the pitch is a series of small drops. 4m from the top is a side passage —30m long. 2m below the start of the final pitch is a 3.5m long side passage leading into the tubes parallel to the main pitch. Straight ahead, a 0.35m hole leads to a 3m high chamber with a 3m high aven and a 3.5m pit with a crystal floor.

Continuing down the final pitch of 1 2m caution need be taken as CO2 may be encountered but has been reported as high as the pitch top. At the bottom of the pitch is 1 -2m wide and 8m of passage with an earth and rubble floor. On the right hand side of the pitch is an extremely tight crawl which leads to the tubes parallel to the main pitch.
