B35 Hollands Hole

Grid Ref. 61904398 p178 & map pocket

Depth: 44.9m Length: 228.2m

B35 is located in a doline on the northern side of the road to the camp ground.

The 0.6m entrance drops down 1 .8m into the entrance chamber which is 1 .3m wide and Sm long. Half way along, on the left, is a narrow rift, 0.4m wide which is the way on. After 3m the passage changes direction and becomes low and wide. Directly above is a 3m high aven which leads to the Root Chamber. On the right, a further 2m on is a passage which leads over rubble and up a sloping soil floor also connecting to the Root Chamber.

The Root Chamber is 3m wide, 2m high and 21m long with a sediment floor and some decoration. The chamber was originally named for the strands of roots hanging from the ceiling, these have now disappeared. From the southern end of this chamber is a small passage leading up through a very tight squeeze to the negotiable entrance tagged B85.

The main passage continues for 2m before sloping down at 200 for 7m to a floor canyon. The floor flattens out for Sm before resuming a 200 slope, The floor becomes cobbley for 9m, flattening out for a further 1 .8m until The Hip Hugger is reached.

The Hip Hugger is 0.4m wide and 0.3m high. After a 7m crawl in low (0.35m high) passage a second squeeze is reached. After 1 m the passage opens into a chamber 1 .4m high, 1 5m wide and Sm long. Straight ahead, across the chamber from the squeeze is a rock slab, behind it is the way on. The slab is best negotiated over the top on the right hand side.

A further 6m of passage 0.6m high and 0.6m wide leads to an east-west trending rift which provides relief from crawling. The rift is 2m wide, 13m long and 10.Sm high. A high level passage with clumps of long tree roots hanging from the ceiling enters on the right. This passage can be free climbed but becomes unnegotiable after 8m.

From the rift a large north trending passage with a boulder strewn floor provides the way on. After 8m there is a 1 .8m climb and a further 25m of passage which diminishes in height until the Knee Breaker Squeeze is reached. This 2.5m long squeeze is very tight and not recoin-mended for the long legged.

At this point the cave changes direction and from north-south to east-west. The passage narrows to 0.4m in width but becomes higher at the 3m climb. 3m from the bottom of the climb is a low duck 0.3m high and 0.45m wide created by a resistant igneous intrusion. Past the duck the passage opens out to a chamber, 4m high, 2m wide and 5m long, with a sediment floor.

The cave continues as low passage for 1 Om to a stepped 7m climb with a floor canyon. After 2m of horizontal passage the floor slopes down at 450 for 2m leading to a further 4m of horizontal passage. The floor drops 0.5m into a dig which continues for 4m before becoming impassable.
