What’s included

Mattresses in the bunkhouses.  Camping areas and caravan areas.

Kitchen pots and pans.

 

What’s not included

You need to bring your own eating utensils and sleeping stuff.

Tour Dances

The Wheatley tradition, a hankie dance called Bobbing a Joe and a stick dance to the tune Oh Dear What Can the Matter Be.  See the notation later on this page.

 

Where are we going

Each day is spent in a different area of Auckland including the city, Onehunga, West Coast beaches, Titirangi, Otara and Howick.

 

The cost

Same as last time but we will use some of the accumulated funds to pay for buses.

The Ale

This is Thursday night and the theme is a Masked Ball

 

What we want from you

We want to know how many adults and how many children will be there that week

The Tour Day by Day

 

Sunday 30th Dec

Meet at the Moto Moana anytime after noon.

At 7pm there is a BBQ followed by a workshop of the Tour dances.  Wheatley Stick dance and Wheatley Hankie.

 

Monday 31st Dec

At 10 we will workshop the Tour dances again then using your own cars we drive to Devonport for lunch.

At 1pm we buy a bus day pass and take the ferry to Auckland city where we dance around the Americas Cup village.  Then on the Link bus to Newmarket and more dancing.

At 5 it’s back to Devonport for dinner in the Bunker with the Devonport Folk Club.

At 7 our elite teams go back into the city to dance at First Night 2002, the big public New Years Eve party in Aotea Square.

Then back on the 9:30 ferry to the Bunker and our own party.

 

Tuesday 1st Jan

At 9:30 we board a bus for a trip to Onehunga where we dance and do a bit of shopping.

At 11 it’s off on the bus to One (None) Tree Hill to dance and eat your lunch.

Then it’s off to the Zoo from 2pm until closing at 5:30.

Back at camp tonight it’s free to have workshop on anything you want.

 

Wednesday 2nd Jan

It’s a Free Day for you to explore Auckland or sleep or swap those fancy leg movements.

 

Thursday 3rd Jan

At 10am we take the bus to Scenic Drive in Titirangi for a walk or drive to Cascades Park for a dance.

Then it's lunch at Swanson Station or Tara orchards at your own expense.

At 2 it’s off to the vineyards to dance and buy the wine for this nights Ale.

4:30 back to camp to prepare for the Ale.

The Ale is a masked ball and then it gets competitive.  Morris team against Morris team, the bells heat up and hankie are stiffened for the dance off.

 

Friday 4th Jan

10:30 the bus leaves for the West coast and Karekare beach for a BBQ in the set of the Piano.

Then off to Piha for sand dancing and a few pints at the RSA.

 

Saturday 5th Jan

We have to be early today.

The bus leaves at 7:30 for Otara markets to dance and then to the shopping centre at Botany Downs to dance.

Lunch is at the Howick Colonial Village where we dance.

Then back to camp and maybe a Celidh tonight.

 

Sunday 6th Jan

Well that’s the end as we have to give the camp back to the Scouts at noon.

Chorus

Using sticks, 3 of the dancers will be hitting a stick presented to them from up, down or across the set.  The other dancers will present their sticks over their heads with their backs to the strikers.

Number the dancers 1 to 6 in the normal manner.

Arm movements

Up and down on first beat.

Well bent at elbows being vigorous with the hankies.

Backstep has hankies in backward circles.

Arms are straight on the jump at end of the back steps.

Chorus

Facing up it’s a closed side step to the left at 45 degrees.  The right arm above your head doing anti clockwise circles for 4 beats then drop hand and face to right another closed side step and left arm above the head for another 4 beats. Then left for 2 beats right for 2 beats then caper twice to face partner finishing with a jump.
