Manager: Gilles Veilleux

Location: Situated in a quiet country area on the Canadian Appalachian mountains, one and a half hours southeast of Montreal. 30 Minutes from Sherbrooke and Magog.

Directions from Montreal: Take highway 10 East about 90 kilometers to Exit 90. (Route 243) Then take 243 North about 35 k to Racine. Turn right (east) onto Route 222. Go 1 k till Grande Ligne road. Turn right (south), go 2.4 K till you see the sign for the hostel, then turn left and follow the little gravel road up the hill about a half K to the hostel. Parking is in back.

Adapted from the Hostels Canada Guide:

Gilles Veilleux is a gentle youthful sort who has hostelled around the world himself. He bought the home from a friend who built it originally for a commune in the 1970's. Now it makes the perfect hostel. Gilles provides an extremely friendly and laid-back experience for those seeking a simple place to read, meditate, or amble about the trails on his 80 acres of land.

The breakfasts are tremendous and feature homemade sourdough French toast with locally tapped maple syrup or another of Gilles own creations. The hostel serves as an ideal spot for workshops and nature retreats. For groups, Gilles cooks exotic lunches and dinners which can be eaten as you watch the sunset over the mountains while sitting on the large back deck.

Nearby Lake Frasier and Orford Provincial Park offer canoeing, kayaking and paddleboats. Mountain bikes are available for rent at the hostel, and on weekends you can get your bike tuned up by right at the hostel by Gilles' cousin, Claude!

Guest Comments: One of the most relaxed hostels I have been to. Gilles was especially helpful to me, letting me hook up my laptop to his phone line for hours on end, offering me tea, loaning me his battery charger, letting me leave my tent up while I took an overnight trip around the area, etc. Like going home, but better!

Remind me of the famous Hostel in the Forest in Georgia. Be sure to check out the wig-wam in the woods and the nearly life-sized wood carvings of the nude couple on the wall next to the fireplace! [email protected]
