SHUGGIE OTIS

Shuggie Otis-I'll admit that I hadn't really heard of this guy before. However, my mother is big blues fan and, for that reason, I have a pretty good working knowledge of the blues, so I was aware of his father. Anyway here lately I've been hearing a lot about this "Shuggie" so I went out on faith and bought the album "Inspiration Information." Just a little background info, this album was initially released as his third solo album in 1974 and proved to be a little too much for the public at the time. It didn't sell and as a result Shuggie went into hiding, only playing again here or there. He subsequently turned down a spot in The Rolling Stones. Okay, biography over, on to the album. It's good. Thank you and good night. I mean really, what can I say? I slept, though I don't feel too guilty because I wasn't around when it first dropped, but I, nonetheless, slept. Keeping in mind that the album was made in, to reiterate, 1974, it's pretty impressive how it uses many musical ideas that are common today. I don't know what the musical landscape was like in '74, but from what I've heard his use of instrumentation was "revolutionary" (I hate that word, too often it's over-used). I'm nowhere near being a musician or even a music critic for that matter, but dammit if "XL-30" or "Aht Uh Mi Hed" aint some ole next shit. It's bluesy, but not to turn you blues-haters off, it's also psychedelic and quiet and mournful and happy. Not a weak song on here. It's also funky and (sorry portishead and tricky, I know you hate the term) trip hoppy; songs like "Pling!" make me wonder if Alpha has ever heard this album. Okay, review over. I haven't told you much, but if you're constantly looking for something "new" and you're a risk-taker and you like music that's technically as well as emotionally masterful, pick it up.
