Nina Simone's Sinnerman-This is church. Not that sunday's finest, be dipped or be damned, hallelujah and please fill the offering plate church. No, this is what church was intended to be by our oh-so-forgotten ancestors forced into christianity. This is pure holy-ghosting; what most baptists wish they were. You see, we all know, to some degree, that congregational worship can only go so far. All that preaching and invitation to worship stuff is not where it's at. Where it is is in the choir selections or in the old lady at the organ. Nina skips the middleman and goes directly to good parts with this one. You have everything here: ill lyrics; raw, emotive vocals; dope instrumentation; crescendos; decrescendos; the whole lot. There is no reason why any of you should be without this song and the album it appears on, "Pastel Blues." Recently I had the pleasure of viewing "The Thomas Crown Affair" for the first time; they included this song as the main accompanying music. Good job. "Oh sinnerman, where you gon' run to?" Good question, much more visceral than an hour-long sermon that bores before it preaches. I swear, if they had just played this song in church, I might've enjoyed going. Oh well, now my parents have a heathen on their hands, but I can still enjoy a little "spiritual upliftment" every now and then.
