STRICTLY HIP HOP

I am not a "head," nor am I a "backpacker." I tend to think of myself (my corporeal body at least) as a whole and I hate carrying a bookbag (see, I can't even use the terms correctly). Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the self-proclaimed headz (tee hee) and backpackers of the world, in fact I love them, they stay in their grandmothers' basements and occasionally come up with really dope shit just for us, but I know what I am and one of them (note the divisive use) I am not.Now there has been a debate raging within the ranks of the hip hop community for years. No, not who the dopest emcee or producer or turntablist or whatever is. No, not whether all male members of the hip hop community are latent homosexuals because of their deep-seated fear and hatred of women. The debate I'm speaking of is that age old concern questioning, "When was the true golden age of hip hop?" Well, I do not intend to provide a definitive answer, I could care less, just give me something ill to listen to. My function here is to point out a possible period that could be considered golden, arguably the last, for we all know that from this point on all good periods in hip hop shall be identified as "platinum."Anyway, most people would agree that there was a decline in the overall quality of hip hop recordings starting in the last part of 94, though there were a couple of gems that followed. However, some emcees had the good sense to take that shit back underground and as a result we have some of the best 12"s, EPs, and albums ever recorded. End of story. So, I'd like to present to you a list of some things that you should have heard unless you're a real herb. Sure, some things will be missing, but I'm not near my vinyl and my memory is that of an octogenerian.
