You may well have heard AM60 on Radio One over the months;
Jo Whiley, Nemone, John Peel and Steve Lamacq have
all given them a spin and the general consensus among these is that they are
rather good. However, they have also appeared on a covermount CD for teen
magazine J17, which I dare say is the appropriate audience for the
band.
AM60 are very American indeed. Ill forgive them as they are
indeed American, but their sound is very sunny Californian pop. Taking
influences from the Beastie Boys and Fun Lovin Criminals (Mackie
of Fun Lovin Criminals fame is in AM60) with a hint of boy band style pop mixed
into the friendly hip-hop sound.
Released very appropriately in the height of the summer season,
AM60 will be hoping it stays sunny, otherwise nobody will even dream of buying
this record. Perfect for pool parties (if youre flash), BBQs or even a picnic,
AM60 stick to the summer sounds throughout the record. Singles Big As The Sky
and Just A Dream both have simple but catchy tunes with basic lyrics that the
kids can all sing along to. Not ignoring the popular chill-out fad that is
popular at the moment, they throw in a few slower numbers with songs such as
Bus and Phat Girl, they lose a mark for the use of the word Phat because
its a plain stupid word and totally unnecessary, let that be a lesson to you
all. They even dare throw in a Bob Dylan tinged harmonica based song
titled Way From Home to add a bit of variety to the album.
This album really isnt my cup of tea, Im a miserable bastard as
you may be able to tell from my various reviews, but this album should be on
everybodys list if youre going to host a party this summer. Its simple; its
catchy and most importantly of all its all a bit of fun. Just use it as a
beverage coaster for the rest of the year and dust it off for the summer.
