four day Hombre + Parisman + Ryder @
Sheffield Barfly Saturday 22nd Dec 2001
Call me old fashioned
but the Barfly is just that bit too new and shiny for me. It definitely isnt
on the Sheffield toilet circuit, and theres just something about those
venues. Still its a nice place, but you do feel guilty when you spill your
beer! And the blokes toilet is really novel just go and see for yourself!
First up, Ryder a
reference to Shaun Ryder perhaps? I must admit, it takes me quite a while to
warm to a new band, but these werent bad. Half way through their set though
the equipment got the better of them, and while the rest of the band frantically
tried to tame it again, the frontman decided to fill the gap with doing a solo
version of Fake Plastic Trees. Bad move. Its a great idea to do a fantastic
song that you love, but this guy just doesnt have Thom Yorkes voice. Thats
not a criticism, very few people do. But when you dont have it, dont try and
cover Radiohead.
After a brief gap,
Parisman. I dont normally like heavier stuff, but this band was good.
They're
not that heavy, not really, but they wouldnt site comfortably next to Belle and
Sebastian in my record collection! Their set was over far too quickly, but in
that short space theyd convinced me that I just needed a copy of their new EP!
And now for the
headliners, introducing four day Hombre! This band are good! Its as if they
knew just what I liked. Take a sound, very indie, but not in a repetitive
turning-the-handle way as if regurgitating the last 10 years of music given the
label. Not really heavy light, almost ethereal but in seemingly stark
contradiction powerful at the same time. Sprinkle lots of fun pop over the top
and there you have it. That little bubble of condensed sound called four day
Hombre. Go and see them.
NOW!
