My correspondent explains that Siamese noblemen habitually rode into battle with a rigourously trained cat on their shoulders. As the enemy approached, the animal would leap from its vantage point onto the head of the opponent's horse. The horse, naturally, would rear up in terror and throw its rider to the ground, to be dispatched [of] by infantrymen. "The gene for the cat's shoulder-perching habit has been retained ever since," explains my informant.
