CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Interface Design - Usability - HCI - Open Source software design

Free software is already a reality in Brazil's government institutions. Civil servants in federal, state, and municipal spheres are installing and managing administrative structures with platforms and applications based on open sources.

Since taking office two years ago, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has turned Brazil into a tropical outpost of the free software movement. Looking to save millions of dollars in royalties and licensing fees, Mr. da Silva has instructed government ministries and state-run companies to gradually switch from costly operating systems made by Microsoft and others to free operating systems, like Linux. On Mr. da Silva's watch, Brazil has also become the first country to require any company or research institute that receives government financing to develop software to license it as open-source, meaning the underlying software code must be free to all.

The initiative includes plans to export around 2 billion USD worth of software per year; to replace Microsoft Windows with Linux in 300,000 federal government computers; to transfer 1 billion USD in resources from the Telecommunications Fund (Fust) to the free software-based Digital Communications System (SCD); and to integrate the country's 200,000 public schools via open-source technology.

But, there are a lots of design problems with that open source interfaces right now: brazilian programmers are producing open source software and Java based web solutions very fast without enough support on HCI and usability for their projects (actually, just for some of them).

Some of the volunteer and academic projects are repeating design mistakes copying the most common software design solutions. That's no good and our research group, named CIBERVIX, is starting to work to design interfaces focusing HCI and usability. We are researching about usability evaluation methods, including remote evaluation methods.
