This is a page of general classroom aides designed primarily for the 7-12 Latin teacher. Some projects may be able to be adapted for lower grades. The LPOL may be a first for Latin instruction!
CAI(Computer Assisted Instruction) for Latin.
Here are two common programs. WINLATIN(IBM) and LATINITAS(APPLE). These are two different programs. LATINITAS requires Hypercard 2.2 with 2mb of RAM and a MAC and WINLATIN requires Windows 3.x or WIN95 and the VBRUN file associated with it which can be downloaded at the WINLATIN site.
LPOL(Lesson Plans On-Line) for Latin. I have included 3 lesson plans for Latin classes. They are generally aimed at the high-school level, but could be adapted for lower grade levels.
LESSON PLANS ON-LINE
Roman Architecture This is a link to a site of Architectural images of ancient Rome. The images are usually no bigger than 1/8 of the screen. Advise students to download at least 3 different images and their short descriptions. Encourage them to view the images off-line for better time management. After the students select their 3 different images, advise them to switch to their reference tool (i.e. Grolier's) and gather more information on the given image. The student combines the images and their descriptions with the WP program and the student then prints a "guidebook" based on the three images.
Roman Army This link requires shockwave and a DSL/CABLE connection will run it nicely. Based on the Vindolanda/Roman Army Museum in Britain, there is enough information here to make several projects. The enhanced sites are very interesting. Lesson Plan 2 ROMAN ARMY Click here
Roman Forum This link will most likely be very popular with your class. An ingenious project by a New York private school, it features a "virtual tour" of Rome through the eyes of your average 7th grader (of course, you don't have to mention that to your class!). It is so well done, that you could probably present it "live". Note that many of the buildings referenced at this site are also the same structures mentioned in LESSON PLAN 1. Little instructions are given since the site is so versatile you should be able to come up with your own strategies.
YOU WILL NEED: WWW access/QuickTime VR capability. Lesson Plan 3 VIRTUAL TOUR of ROME Click here
Any Lesson Plan On-Line is only as good as your preparation. Always preview sites and links since they are subject to change anytime. "WebWhacking" is highly encouraged because you can retrieve files, images and sounds from a site to a hard disk or server and present the material without needing a live feed to the Internet. Don't know what a "WebWhacker" is? See the link below. WebWhacker Information IBM/APPLE Click Here
Helpful hints on plowing through this section: "Cybersites" refers to the company that originally designed S.P.Q.R. for the web. "GTinteractive" is the company selected to market the CD-ROM version for home use.
