For several months in 1971, Amtrak operated through chair car and sleeper service between San Diego and Seattle on the tri-weekly Coast Starlight. The through service used primarily Southern Pacific equipment. The cars operated on ex-Santa Fe San Diegans between LA and San Diego. These photos show one of these San Diegans at Santa Ana on a gloomy July 2, 1971.
1. The morning northbound San Diegan arrives at the old Santa Fe station on Fourth Street in Santa Ana.
2. The consist was a mixture of Santa Fe and Southern Pacific equipment. The car behind the baggage car is a Santa Fe lounge.
3. The through Seattle cars on this day were all ex-Sunset Limited SP cars - two chair cars and a 10-6 sleeper.
