This is my first novel. (So
far the only one too.)
It's been written in 1993-96
and has been published by Istanbul based publisher
IYI SEYLER YAYINCILIK.
The novel is structered in
29 chapters which is the number of letters in Turkish alphabet.
Every chapter is titled by
a word in alphabetical order: Alla Turca, Burclar (Star Signs),
Cinsler (Sexes), Çocuklar
(Children), Delilik (Madness), Evlilik (Marriage), etc.
It goes from A to Z like
that and ends with Zaman (Time)
which is also the first word
of the novel.
In the beginning of every
chapter there's an enlarged letter,
each one copied from different
books or posters, record sleeves etc.
The story is about a group
of friends in Istanbul in 90's... Their crossed love relations, their endless
confusion,
their admiration/hatred against
each other. The narrator remembers his youth and tells the story to
a boy who doesn't speak Turkish.
So, the book is in a way, some kind of a little alphabet book for
a beginner.
After I started writing the
book I saw there were many writers, poets who had been interested in
alphabet forms and used alphabetical
order as an aesthetic structure in their works. If you know
such works, please let me
know.
