THE HUMAN HEART

Like all mammals, the human heart has four chambers (atria and ventricles). Our heart is responsible for the pumping of our blood and hence blood circulation. We have a double circulatory system: pulmonary circulation (between heart and lungs) and systemic circulation (between heart and body).Inside our heart, there is a division so that there is no mixing of oxygenated (from the lungs) and deoxygenated (from the body) blood. Deoxygenated blood flows into the right atrium of the heart through the vena cava from our body and is pumped by the right ventricle to the lungs through the pulmonary artery. On the other hand, oxygenated blood flows into the left atrium of the heart from the lungs through the pulmonary veins and is pumped into the rest of our body by the left ventricle through the aorta. Hence, it is very important that we have a healthy heart. The above image is a rough idea of how our heart looks like externally.
