The widespread use of computers in the past decade and the corresponding ability to carry out high-speed calculations on incoming data samples in real time have produced a virtual revolution in the field of signal processing. Seismic signals, biomedical signals, sonar and radar signals, among many examples, are now routinely processed by computers. A computer may test a signal to see if it possesses characteristics of specific interest, such as evidence in a seismic signal that may indicate the presence of a desired mineral deposit underground, or it may test a child's brain voltage signal for indications of the presence of a congenital learning disability. Other computers process noisy radar signals to provide speed and location estimates to the pilot of an airplane approaching an airport. Radar signal processors algo detect the presence or absence of other airplanes along a pilot's intended route. Special-purpose computers designed to rapidly carry out Fourier transform calculations are now available at costs which make them economically justified for many applications. Of particular interest are oscilloscope-minicomputer combinations which, with appropriate software modifications, will carry out signal averaging, fast Fourier transform calculations, spectral analysis, and a host of other signal-processing operations, rapidly displaying the resultant information as curves on the oscilloscope screen, or rapidly printing the curves on paper. It is our feeling that many of the techniques and algorithms currently employed by engineers and scientists in carrying out signal-processing tasks are widespread and basic enough to warrant introduction into the undergraduate engineering curriculum. We have therefore been developing an upper-level course over the past four years at the Polytechnic Institute of New York that covers some of the more fundamental topics in the area of signal processing. This book is an outgrowth of that course.
