CONTENIDO:

Twenty years have elapsed since the appearance of Henisch's classic book Rectifying semiconductor contacts. The intervening period has been one of intense activity in the field of semi conductor contacts, partir because of their immense importance in semiconductor technology and partir due to the development of new experimental techniques, so that we now have a much fuller understanding oí the basic contact phenomena thanwe did twenty years ago. Although much of Henisch's book remains releVfnt today, it seems an approp, riate moment for the publication of a book which embodies the developments of the past two decades. I have not attempted to deal with every aspect of the subject in minute detail; rather, my aim has been to cover the basic principIes fairly fully and to leave the reader who wishes to explore some particular facet in greater detail to do so with the help of the references provided. I have also deliberately not dealt with the practical applications of contacts beyond discussing methods of fabricating them, though I have tried to bring out the practical implications of the basic phenomena wherever possible. Applications mar change, but the fundamental principIes remain. The reader meeting the subject for the first time can obtain an overall view from Chapter 1, which constitutes a synopsis of the whole book and which contains cross-references to enable him to pursue any particular aspect more fully.
